Im supposed to fly to sheffield for a festival in October. I thought those attending might have to show a negative test of something (its quite a small venue & pretty sweaty in certain rooms, going on previous years). Now it looks like there might be no restrictions Im having second thoughts. The line ups amazing though so Im not counting anything out yet.

some of the line up : 96 Back (Live) / Alex Mclean / Andy Stott (Live) / Anz / AYA (Live) / Aurora Halal / Batu / Ben UFO / Diessa / Displace / Gabber Modus Operandi (3D) / Helena Hauff / Hyperdub Showcase / Ifeoluwa / India Jordan / Joy Orbison / Juliana Huxtable / Kode 9 / Konx-Om-Pax / Loraine James (Live) / Lo Shea / Mark Fell / Midland / Minsky Rock (Live) / Nkisi (3D) / Nyege Nyege Showcase (3D) / Pattern + Push / Phatworld (3D Live) / Rian Treanor / SHERELLE / Skee Mask / Tekkers / Tim Reaper / The Beatriarchy / VTSS (Live) / Winston Hazel / Wub Club / Yes No Wave Music

Decided that I'd better check all the gigs I've tickets for that have either been re-arranged from last year or that I'd bought thinking there was little chance of them going ahead but desperate to go to anything. So, before the end of 2021 I've got:

Black Midi, Fontaines DC, Mogwai, Sleaford Mods and Black Country, New Road

January to March 2022 is:

Peter Hook, Idles, Dry Cleaning and Yard Act

Unfortunately all the Friday and Saturday gigs have been rearranged for midweek. Urg.

Just had an email saying that masks to be worn unless drinking at Liquid Rooms on Wednesday.

Reckon the bar will be busy then.

Not sure if I'm looking forward to it or not 😬

Edit: really enjoyed it. Not that busy and probably 50/50 in terms o those wearing a mask and those standing with a pint and not. Good atmosphere - great to listen to live music again.

Hectic few months coming up…

Have tickets for Tom Clarke of The Enemy next week but think I’m going to have to give that a miss

Transmit next Saturday, not going all day as the line up is poor. Heading later on for Primal Scream and Liam Gallagher so it’ll be pints in Glasgow before that

‘An evening with’ Rick Witter from Shed 7 and Clint Boon at Dr Bells 29th September

DMA’s at the Corn Exchange October 19th

Booze & Glory at Bannermans, 21st November

Shed 7 at the Barras on 27th November, same day as EH6 Fest though so may opt for that instead

Libertines at Usher Hall, 1st December, same night we’re at home to the Huns 😩

This was the setlist in London last night (lifted from here (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/arab-strap/2021/electric-ballroom-london-england-338c1c8d.html) but fits with my memory):

The Turning of Our Bones

Kebabylon
Here Comes Comus!
Piglet

Blackness
Tears on Tour

Fable of the Urban Fox

Ticket pre check, temp taken, passport inspected (glanced) and tickets scanned.
One to note. Cash only at all bars. Not sure whether thats all the time or they had problems on the night. Very unusual.

Brilliant being back at a gig. Enthusiastic crown and fortunately John Grant maybe not the artiste of choice for the coked up neds, which is surprising given the huge amount of electro/techno in the set. I would think many of the club djs would have fun with some of his material. Maybe they do, but since I've not been in a club for decades, wouldnt know.

Day 1 of the Isle of Wight Festival. Started with Sophie Ellis Bexter. That lassie has done well out of Covid. The Big Top was bursting at the seems. Just a big party. Then a few local bands and a Madness tribute, who were great fun.
Finally Scouting for Girls. Not a band I could say I liked or name more than a couple of hits but thoroughly enjoyed them. Just great pop and had the huge tent in the palm of their hands. I was surprised how many tracks I knew, which was a strap line for a Crowded House compilation 20 odd years ago. Coincidentally, they reminded a lot of early Crowded House. Great fun, unpretentious pop.

Arab Strap at Dunfermline was standing. Most people naturally kept their distance. There was only 1 guy who,.clearly a big fan, who was away wi the goalie 😁 The space around him got progressively bigger as the night went on.

No certs were needed, and like JC says, I think people were just happy to be back.

My fear, though, is when there is more drink and drugs involved. That's when it might be more difficult to avoid f-wits

with this being a 3 day techno festival that’s on till 7 each night i’m sure there will be a bit of that :-). I’m happy enough to hang about at the back where there’s more space 😊

Delighted my nearest town Sligo is hosting Spilt Milk Festival again. Really intimate set of avant garde electronica, punk, folk & noise acts lined up http://spiltmilkfestival.com/

It’s kinda refreshing as although there’s a glut of amazing musicians in the area it’s generally the same rock & trad you hear playing.

There will be plenty tickets. That will be carnage, I'm too old for that carry on now. Watch your hotel doesn't take the piss. My mate booked a hotel in Perth for rewind festival at £138 for 2 nights, close to the event he got an email saying that they were cancelling the booking due to an 'administrative' error but they could rebook the same room for nearly £500 for 2 nights. Utter *****.

Got The Virginmarys at Opium in the Cowgate on saturday, cracking indie/punk band from Macclesfield, seen then a few times now. Playing as a 2 piece now, the bassist left a couple years ago and they had a friend from another band playing but they've decided to go with just two of them.

. So glad I flew over for it. Partly because of the line up & how wonderful its been in the past but also because it gave me real hope of how quickly things could go back to normal. There were no tests no checks no restrictions (I did do a test every morning though just for a wee bit of peace of mind). Everyone so friendly and just happy that it was happening again. The Black Dog, Aurora Halal, Helena Hauff, Julia Huxtable & Midland were the highlights but to be honest the line up was just class & everyone amazing. After two years wait just delighted something Id loved so much in the past could be just as good in the current situation.

Saw inhaler at TRNSMT and they were excellent. On that note, also saw The Lathums at TRNSMT who also impressed and have since had a number 1 album. They’re doing the liquid rooms and pjs in Dunfermline in December as part of a tour they’ve had arranged for over a year so is a long time sold out. Checked Ticketmaster 3 days running and eventually managed to get 2 tickets for Liquid rooms. Also £15 each, and also likely to be the last time their tickets will be that price.

I've got to wait til November til they make it to these shores again but have been very jealous seeing my mates see them around the UK. Couldn't agree more about the new album... think they can just write off Ultra Mono as a third album anomaly.

Got Genesis Owusu in Sydney and Brisbane next month - not my usual genre of music but loved his debut album and has been good to see him getting some pop in the UK too. Think an Aussie Young Fathers for a cheap comparison.

He's good in a live setting, his first two albums are brilliant IMO.

I’ll be seeing both of them as well, albeit Dry Cleaning in Edinburgh on Friday.

Haven’t seen Yard Act yet so looking forward to that, but have seen Dry Cleaning a couple of times. Love them.

Forthcoming diary includes Dry Cleaning, Yard Act, Benefits, The Bug Club, Steve Ignorant, The Cool greenhouse.

Busy spell but no shortage of live music choices.

I'm surprised Yard Act are still at Mono. They were relatively unknown when we got the tickets last year but they're doing pretty well now. Thought it might have been moved to a bigger venue. Quite happy to see them at a wee place like that, I've only ever seen local bands, mostly featuring folk I know, there before.

The one we’re going to is on at The Caves (Edinburgh) - long sold out but maybe the case with most of the dates and not as easy to move lots of venues?

So much choice at the moment as artists return to live performing, and our group of like minded music fans have added another few dates yesterday with Flat Worms at Broadcast in June, Richard Dawson & Circle at Summerhall in July and King Khan & The Shrines at Voodoo Rooms in April.

Oh, Richard Dawson. I missed seeing him in Glasgow in 2019, much to my regret. That album with Circle is unlike anything I've heard, as you'd expect from him.

Just to say, you’re in for a treat tonight - Dry Cleaning were in sparkling form last night at Summerhall. Really improved their live sound since last time I saw them early 2020.

Hopefully see an improvement in this second half at Easter Road first of all though 🙈

When I went to Sonar I loved it so much I was considering moving to Barcelona. My wife and I are big Maximo Park fans, she just asked yesterday if they were touring anywhere soon and I half jokingly said we could see them in Berlin, shortly afterwards we were booked!

Thanks. Ended up being a pretty decent day all round. Positive second half, met a couple of pals on the train back to Glasgow, and a really good gig.

We were in the Aragon on Byres Road for a couple of pints before heading over to the QMU. One of my mates noticed the Dry Cleaning guitarist was there too. He must have been there until about half eight (we kept an eye out so we knew we were safe to stay) and was on stage at 9. Seemed very into it during the gig!

Abroad gigs are class - went to Prague for LG at metronome which was tiny for a festival. About ten feet from him right at the front was some experience

Also seen him in Amsterdam and there’s just a totally different vibe abroad, probably because it’s no full of chinged up wee bams

Nice one - they actually played there as part of their 50th anniversary tour in 2013. I know because I had a ticket and sold it 🙈

That doesn’t take away from how good a time you’ll have. They were still putting on a great show when I last seen them in 2018. Seen them 4 times now and haven’t yet convinced myself that I’ll be going back to see them without Charlie (Charlie watts before anyone is in with a wise crack 😉).. but I probably will eventually!
