Good professional performance. Some basic errors but that’s to be expected in the 1st game of the season. Very impressive use of the driving maul which isn’t something Scotland have historically been good at. And Georgia are usually tough up front. Would have liked to have seen some more expansive play and get the backs involved more but maybe not ideal conditions for that. Thought we looked markedly more threatening when Russell came on.

Very happy with tonight's result and performance. Fraser Brown was fantastic, as were Darcy Graham, Jamie Ritchie and Blair Kinghorn. Thought Finn added something extra when he came on too, and you can really see what van der Merwe is going to add to this team - him on one wing and Graham on the other bodes well for pace and power on the flanks.
Quite disappointed with Adam Hastings tonight - his kicks in open play were alright, but his conversions were poor.

agree, Scotland’s pack in general played well, as has already been mentioned, the driving maul was a weapon not often displayed by Scotland.
Finn Russell changed the dynamics of the game, the ball was moving more quickly and more purposefully. I find Hastings to be quite a conservative fly half, Russell brings an X factor that makes his team much more dangerous.
overall, a very professional performance, the type of result that too often Scotland haven’t turned in, in previous times we’d have hugged and puffed to a fairly narrow victory, this is more like what a NZ, Australia, SA, or an England would do. No fuss, just get the job done in a comfortable manner. I’ve criticised Townsend a lot, but he needs to be given credit here.

Plenty positives from lasts nights game . Generally Scotland never usually play that well in the first of the autumn test matches so it was good to get a convincing victory even if Georgia weren't that great . Good confidence builder for the next weekends game which will a tough match but not unwinnable I'd say . Finn ads that extra X factor to the team so it good to see that they've come to their senses and sorted out their differences

I think this is one of the better chances we've had at getting a win down in Wales - the squad look harmonised, our star players are performing well and we're making fewer technical mistakes than last year. The addition of van der Merwe gives us a high-speed tank on the left side too, with the explosive pace of Darcy on the right. If we can keep it competitive and manage the breakdowns well, I think we could genuinely come close to getting a much needed win!
Hope it's a good game regardless of the score.

I just don’t think Hastings is very good. Would be great to have a more capable back up behind Russell. His kicking is terrible.
Only caught the last 20 but what caught my eye was the lack of stupid mistakes that usually pop up with Scotland. Seemed very disciplined.

Thank god Scotland won yesterday or my state of depression would be off the scale. I think there is a real changing if the guard at the moment. Scotland have got a younger team than we have for a while. And for the first time in absolutely years we have a good set of forwards and a good set of backs at the same time. Wales are going backwards. Guys like AWJ, North and Halfpenny didnt have much impact on the game and are hard to replace. Tupiric was a big kiss for them as well and Scotland's back row were the better if the two. The Scotland bench was stronger than the Welsh one too. All in all looking promising for Scotland

Incredibly uncomfortable first win of the season for Edinburgh against a stubborn Scarlets side - even after they went down to 13 men (eventually getting back to 14) they were resolute and hard to break down.

Do you think that there is an aging group of previously excellent players in that team who no longer have the same impact on games, but you are struggling to replace them? I thought for the first time in a long time that if you were to pick a XV out of the squads the majority would have been Scots

And it is a joke for him to talk like that. Hartley, cokanasiga, underhill, Tuilagi, Vinupola x 2, Heinz all foreign born. And that's just off the top of my head

I'd like Wayne Barnes to never referee a Scotland game again. Some of his penalties against us were a result of him unable to contain himself in blowing the whistle (especially the not releasing and not rolling away penalties).
France deserved their win, no arguments - they were the better side when it counted.

said that to my wife during the game!! Barnes is a shocking ref and it went just the penalties he gave against us for me, it was the stuff he let go when he should have awarded pens to Scotland. Wasn't a bad game with two very solid defences, not much in it except for one bit of good attacking play from France. They are an excellent side at the moment so not too disheartened

Despite the score line its been a good game so far . I assume the half time hooter is automatically sounded if not the guy in charge would've been rather embarrassed if that penalty had' ever been missed
If missed in normal play it would have been a drop out. As HT hooter went prior to it been taken it was always HT as soon as it was kicked or missed.

Gregor gone for a different look this week. Pleased to see Darcy back in though I am a little surprised to see Duncan Weir dropped. He's looked great in the recent games - having said that, Van Der Walt is a class act at 10 and I'm delighted to see him being called into the Scotland setup (though as an Edinburgh man, I'm probably biased).

I’d agree based on some of the penalties but Taylor should NEVER have been sinbinned, there was no clarity on grounding for Ireland’s second try and their third try was as clear a forward pass as you’ll see! And how Fraser Brown is expected to move anywhere is a total mystery.
Some poor decisions from Scotland’s players (especially at the breakdowns) but the ref was appalling.

also thought he was a bit blasé about the possible eye gouging incident - “I’ll have one quick look and then we’re moving on”
eye gouging is a pretty serious offence, and would normally be properly checked, but he seemed to be keen to move things on as fast as he could

I was surprised it wasn’t scrutinised as closely as Scotland’s overall discipline was in the breakdown of play, especially in the tackle.
Might just be the ones in my head but Ritchie seemed to cop it particularly badly today. Maybe a hard lesson to learn that they have to give the refs no excuses - we have the worst record in the ANC, so it isn’t one game and one referee.

Agree with all, hard lesson learned today, but as I said to McD our record is poor when it comes to silly things at the breakdown, we must take a leaf out of the books of others and learn to be more controlled.

i think the french gave away 18 penalties in that game...the last one costing them dearly, brave performance though from their 2nd team, they still had the chance in regulation time by going 7 points ahead with just three minutes remaining but you just knew they would gift yet another penalty from the restart and they duly obliged by losing a converted try, all credit goes to the young french team though imo, a full french team would have won that i think

I think that the Taylor sin-binning was harsh, but I can see why the referee gave it. I said to myself when I saw the first replay that it looked like he instinctively stuck his hand out to block the ball. So hard to tell though, so I still think it was harsh.
On the grounding of the ball, the referee gave the try so he had clearly seen the grounding. If the on-field decision is a try then the TMO has to see clear evidence that it shouldn't be a try to reverse the decision, there was nothing clear so they stuck with the on-field decision.
If the referee had said that he couldn't see if it was grounded properly and asked the TMO to check the grounding, or if he had said "try, yes or no?" then the decision may have been different as the TMO could say there's no clear grounding and not award the try.
This is the correct way to do things, the referee is still in charge and should take responsibility and make decisions, so they should, wherever possible, make a decision and ask the TMO to check if there's any reason it should be over turned rather than going to the TMO to get a decision made.
The final pass to Earls certainly was caught in front of where it was passed, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a forward pass according to how the laws are interpreted at the minute. It is currently interpreted by looking at the hands of the player passing the ball and not the motion of the ball. If the hands pass the ball backwards it is considered a backwards pass, even if the ball travels forwards. If a player is running forward, the ball has forward momentum, so even if it is passed backwards it can still travel forward because of its forward momentum, in order to give the benefit to attacking teams and try to boost try scoring, this forward momentum is allowed if the player passes the ball backwards.
To me it looked like O'Mahony's hands were passing the ball backwards, so even though the ball travelled forward it is classed as a backwards pass.

Out of interest was there a reason so many players on each team didn't take a knee pre match? I think only 5 or 6 Scotland players did.
I'm not judging anyone, just curious as to whether it was a collective decision. It seems to have been universally accepted by football players and I had assumed rugby would have been similar.

scotland have so many talented players, it’s great to see them all bringing that performance together, and also getting their just rewards
had that been an All Blacks/Australia/South Africa team instead of Scotland, it would be getting feted around the world as an ominous performance from a team looking to do damage at the World Cup - we should be taking this performance as an indicator that we can do that if we can nail the consistency

Billy Vunipola's take on things;
"A similar situation happened with the Black Lives Matter movement last week when we were asked if we want to take a knee or not.
"What I saw in terms of that movement was not aligned with what I believe in. They were burning churches and Bibles. I can't support that.
"Even though I am a person of colour, I'm still more a person of, I guess, Jesus."

I gather that there was a collective agreement prior to the autumn internationals that players wouldn't take the knee and that support for BLM would be shown by the rugby authorities in other ways eg there was an anti-racism message broadcast on TV screens as players lined up for the national anthems. I think it was assumed this would continue for the Six Nations (the same pre-match message appeared on screens) and while none of the Irish, Welsh, French or Italian players took the knee several of the England players for some reason decided to do so. A couple of the Scotland players noticed this and did likewise.

If we can play as cohesively as we did on Saturday then yes I reckon we have a great chance of beating Wales, but it would be fairly typical of Scotland to fall short after such a promising display. It's also a big ask in international rugby, even in the pro era, for players to get back to that level just a week after a game as intense as Saturday's.

Scotland V Wales tomorrow. First time I've missed this fixture at Murrayfield. I'm Welsh but I live here, work here got married here and my wife and Son are Scottish so even if we lose (which I think we will) I'd rather lose to no one else.
I shouted so loudly when you beat England last week I woke my boy up who was asleep in the other room. If (when) you beat us I will be right behind you for a grand slam. Mon the Scots.

I don't think there's any 'when' about it - this will be a tough game and you looked really resilient last week against Ireland. The loss of Ritchie and Redpath is unfortunate, but to bring in quality like Blade and Darcy is a good sign for us - Darcy and Duhan on opposite wings is great to have, especially with North missing out.
Like you, I'll miss this game not being in person. In my personal opinion, there's no finer atmosphere in Edinburgh than when the Welsh are in town - I absolutely love them and many a great night has been had afterward with them in pubs across the Toon.

I think they have to start considering a play-off or straight promotion and relegation, Italy just aren't developing and are being left behind.

How popular is rugby in Italy?
It's obviously the dominant sport in Wales, it's a large minority sport in Ireland, is huge in the south of France in particular, in terms of attendance it's behind only the top 2 football leagues in England and there are large rugby strongholds across Scotland.
Is there a desire to really invest in and improve rugby in Italy?

Do rugby players get away with talking back to refs more these days? I've noticed 2 or 3 Welsh players give a bit of a mouthful.
It's obviously miles apart from football but it's something I never noticed before.

missed chances yet again at the welsh try line and up we come the other end for a welsh try, those mistakes hurting us

We're a lot easier on the eye than we were a few years back, but we've played in a pretty pacey, entertaining way for a while now without quite carrying the extra edge required for tangible success. I'm a bit surprised Townsend is still coach, but last week's win at Twickenham was a massive plus point for him.
Until the last few minutes it looked like we were going to follow up with another impressive win but looks like we might be about to implode!

Definite red card nowadays. Contact to the head is a red card. Players should know better, it is the rules. As someone who played through the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and stopped playing in 2018 after 37 years and have seen law changes year after year players need to adapt. It is their ****ing job. Fagerson cost us that game make no mistake.

Need to put points on the board instead of repeatedly kicking for touch.

Nope. It was reckless, he did hit the head. Straight red. Feel a wee but for him as it wasn't as bad a O'Mahony last week. But you start with the red and check to see if there are mitigating circumstances. The face he ran from distance and made no attempt to wrap his arms means red card. Lost the game because of it

:agree:
players not wrapping the arms these days are inviting a red card, coupled with contact to the head is doubling down on that.
the distance he came from he had time to adjust where he was making contact, even with Hogg pulling the guy away

Personally thought it was harsh. Pitch ref had the perfect view and gave nothing. Didn't seem clear enough for a red for me. Game changing decision with little or no contact with head and player not in any way injured. On that basis there will be three or four reds a game. Something not right also about English officials making a decision which directly favours their country imo.

Yeah I dont think wales will beat either England or France...Im still hopeful Scotland can pull off a shock against France, its gonna be some game with the philosophy of both teams. I think we could win our last 3 matches if we screw the nut re infringements. I dont think Ireland are any great shakes under the new management team who I think was a weird appointment in the first place (like England, some great players but the system they are using isnt the best).
