Hope we rest a few key players for the Romania game (Russell, Duhan, Darcy, Darge, Dempsey, Kinghorn) so they’re fit and injury free v Ireland.
Could never cheer on an Eddie Jones side, so I was happy to see Wales go through (even though it meant Gatland winning). I do suspect Jones will be emptied: another failed experiment!

Reasonable team for the weekend, managed to keep a balance of fringe players along with some main stays.
Team: Smith, Graham, Harris, Redpath, Steyn, Healy, Price, Bhatti, Ashman, Sebastian, Skinner, Gilchrist, Crosbie, Watson, M Fagerson.
Replacements: Matthews, Sutherland, Nel, Cummings, Darge, Horne, Kinghorn, Jones.
I am heading to Lille tomorrow morning for the game, nice to travel to a Scotland away game absolutely certain we will win - doesn't happen often!

Watching the Samoa Japan game, and I'm getting reminded why rugby players have never been known as style icons.
Is it just coincidence that the 2 worst hairstyles are sitting in the bin?

Need to beat Ireland and score four tries and win by more than seven. Not sure we can manage that. Think there will be a score we need to beat them by that we don't need four tries. Assume something like 15 or 16 not sure. Big ask. Thought some of Scotlands play was excellent and Darcy is a bit of a star.

Winning by more than 7 will be enough for Scotland. Four tries not needed. However other than one World Cup warm up game 12 years ago that didn't feature first choice teams Scotland haven't beaten Ireland by more than 7 for over 20 years.

As long as SA get the bonus point win v Tonga. If not, and we beat Ireland without a bonus point and deny them a losing bonus point, then all three teams will be on 14 points with 1W and 1L against the other two tied teams, so then points difference will determine the two qualifiers.
Same would apply if SA get the bonus v Tonga, we beat Ireland with a 4 try bonus and they get a losing bonus ie all three teams on 15 points.

All Ireland need to do is win, no matter how. Ugly will do them just fine. I think they will keep it tight, play a territory game with the boot and kick their points. I thought Toony would counter that with Harris and Steyn, try and keep us in it, then unleash Graham and Jones in the 2nd half but he's been very positive with his selection. Ireland's winning run has got to end some time. Don't see why it can't be us that does it. You can't be confident but we're not as big an underdog as the bookies and most pundits think.

I’m not into rugby but there’s nowt else on so watching. The Knick on that prevented the Samoan try. He did t knock it on did he? Yes there’s no doubt he touched it but it was the England players ( either of them ) that knocked it in wasnt it? Also at the end of the half the clock had ticked over the 40 as the ball was in the air but not over the line yet they played on. Curious game.

Money. Invested an incredible amount if cash in supporting rugby. I think I read that they spend more than England do on rugby per head of population. That and the folk who promote the game in Ireland can see past the public schools and usual clubs to invest that money in. Club rugby in Scotland is ****ed.

They adapted better to rugby going pro. Strong provinces, conveyor belt of development (mainly from private schools) and decent coaching at all age grades. They made the decision around 6 years ago to accelerate all this and here’s the result.

Ireland All Blacks will be a colossal game. Scotland nowhere near these elite teams either physically but particularly defensively. Looked way too easy to score against though fair to say TMO seem to have a snooze when Scotland playing first try is a clear block. The decision when the Irish full back was clearly in touch was bizarre though the difference in class was for all to see

He was, though hard for him or Duhan to do anything when they never saw the ball, given that Tuipualotu never once passed it, choosing to run into the nearest Irish player instead.

We've seen this many times before. A few shout out.... then others try to shut them up.... etc etc....
Remember, too, it's France, where Arab-Jewish issues are much more sensitive than they are here. I was surprised there weren't more shouting. Marseilles earlier had quite a lot, too, again not surprisingly. I reckon they cut it short there.

South Africa are the absolute masters when the game is played tight and physical. It's been there trademark for years.

So glad that on a day of crap results this one landed right. If England ever decide to play rugby again they will be a top side. While they continue with that strategy of kick, kick again and then kick some more they will keep losing to the very best sides. That is the one difficult match they have had in the tournament and they lost. They also struggled in the group and also against Fiji in the quarters. They have some unbelievably talented players but thankfully for the rest of us that skill is being coached out of them.

I can't get so enthused about club rugby. I always feel they don't tackle with quite the same commitment.
As an Edinburgh ST holder, I find this an odd take...

back to club rugby for now :)
Dragons 17 Edinburgh 22
Glasgow 43 Leinster 25, albeit a rather weakened Leinster side, my viewing timing as usual was impeccable by tuning in just in time to see the players shaking hands at the end

I'll most likely miss the WC final as I'm at the Edinburgh v Lions game - first home game of the season, so wasn't missing it. They are showing it in the Clubhouse after the Edinburgh game, but I don't think the Mrs would take too kindly to me leaving around 3pm to get to Edinburgh for the game, and not getting back home til near midnight while she chases our two around the entire day :greengrin

Argentina like giving gifts
73 mins Argentina 23 England 26
stadium playing if you wanna be my lover by the spice girls, ffs
75 mins penalty Argentina, go for it never mind ET...aww taking the penalty from out wide and he's made an erse of it, they've blown a great chance his team mates on the bench look gutted
lots of regrets for Argentina players, whoever made that decision not to be that bit braver and going for touch ultimately cost his side

And Scotland dont even get to the knock out. Knock it all you want England finished 3rd .. draw blah blah blah but France, Scotland, Wales and Ireland failed. England with their most disappointing World Cup team for years finished 3rd. Get over it.

Only about a dozen nations in the world play it seriously its like bragging about winning an international trophy at cricket, baseball or kabaddi
