Sevco pushed the boat out in getting Gerrard to stop Celtic getting the ten and succeeded. I doubt the next appointment will be a big name, Poundland coaches are on alert 😆

You think managing Watford, Brighton, Burnley, Brentford would be more attractive than Celtic/Rangers, I don’t agree
I think they’d be significantly more financially appealing.
O'Rourke3
10-11-2021, 11:07 PM
I disagree.
There’s a strong chance Celtic could win the league this year and if they do, Gerrards reputation will be shot to pieces, if he wins the league his stock won’t get any higher than it is now.
Aston Villa are a huge club who will spend a lot of money on players. He’s got an opportunity to get back into the premiership which will be more appealing than a few games in Europe against some pretty average and some decent sides.
There’s also the family side of it, apparently his family have stayed down south and he travels back a couple of times a week. Getting to go and live back home again would be a huge appeal.
I think it’s a no brainer for him.Assuming he lives near Liverpool Is Birmingham so much closer to home that the drive is a PITA??

15/20 years ago not a chance. Now? Absolutely. Those clubs could spend money on one player that would be the equivalent to Rangers entire budget.
Usually when we have an importnant game with the hun, the papers are full of speculation on our manager. Not this time though.

I read today (think it was the Daily Record online) that Gerrard really rates him and tried to sign him for Rangers. I wasn't aware of that.
Wonder what the reaction of the grandson of a former Celtic chairman would be to that. :greengrin

I don’t think they’ll rush into hasty appointment. We I’d like to think that we might benefit from their ‘crisis’ as, for most Huns, this came as a wee bit of a shock. On the other hand, in the absence of a permanent replacement, I think they’re more likely to be galvanised into a difficult outfit to beat.

I’ve asked on the PM board but is it strange that he’s not been quoted for it really?
On paper he’s done a decent job at Hibs. Finished 3rd last season, good cup runs and now has European experience. I’d hoped he would be one of the front runners for it in all honesty.
Is it just our slow start this season that has taken him out the running for the job?
Where were we in the league when the Huns pinched McLeish from us?

In what world would they ever be 10 times bigger? Villa are the biggest club in the second largest city in the UK, they probably have a wider fanbase of roughly the same size as Rangers.
They play in a far higher standard of league. Their revenues absolutely dwarf Rangers. They can attract and retain far better players. They have won the European Cup as opposed to the much lower regarded Uefa cup.
If anything, I'd say Villa are bigger.

Yes, why the confused smilie? It’s not exactly breaking news that some of us aren’t overly keen on his Hibs team.
You’re of course perfectly entitled to disagree but I don’t think there’s any confusion around it.
I don’t think Hibs can justify sacking him but I find this Hibs team mind numbingly boring. I think the only way we are likely to replace him as manager is if another club comes in for him. Rangers are the only club in Scotland that are likely to tempt him now Celtic have just recently replaced their manager.
I don’t think any English clubs will be tempted by him after his Sunderland stint.

I'd say Rangers have a bigger fanbase. Celtic and Rangers fanbase is unfortunately enormous, probably only Man United and Liverpool could rival them in the UK. Would Villa attract 50k fans if they were in their equivalent of Scottish League 2? Agree about the revenue and the league appeal. Its a no brainer for Gerrard.

Why do you find it so hard to understand some people just think differently to you?
Some people are only interested in results and where we finish, that’s absolutely fine, I totally get that.
Other people want to enjoy going to watch Hibs as well. For some, the end result isn’t all that matters. How we get there is important too.
Perfectly fine for people to want different things from their Hibs team, no matter what stats or league positions you point to, the number of Hibs fans in the second camp above might be higher than you’d like to think.
We’re clearly not going to sack him and I totally understand why. The only way he’s likely to leave is if another club comes in for him and Rangers are one of a few that would potentially fall into that category.

Where were we in the league when the Huns pinched McLeish from us?
We were 8th in the league according to Wikipedia. He left after 17 games and we were W 5 D 4 L 8 - 1.1 points per game, on track for 42 points from a 38 game season. We finished on 41 points in 10th place.
I think the key factor in McLeish's appointment was that Dick Advocaat went to a DoF role and chose AM as his successor, IIRC? Obviously had a far more distinguished playing career than Ross also, which may have gone a long way back then.

The Scottish media like to make out that Celtic and Rangers have absolutely enormous supports. In comparison to other Scottish clubs they do but nothing out of the ordinary compared to other big clubs.
Looking at their respective followings on social media:
Villa - 1.7 million Twitter followers
Rangers - 670,000 Twitter Followers
Villa - 1.3 million Instagram followers
Rangers - 570,000 Instagram followers
Villa - 3.4 million Facebook followers
Rangers - 750,000 Facebook followers
Now, these figures won't tell the whole story but across all 3 Villa have around 3 times more people engaged enough with their club to be interested enough to follow them. The suggestion that Rangers have a far bigger support doesn't really stand up to scrutiny.

I’m baffled to understand why Rangers would appoint a manager whose team, according to some of it’s fans, plays eye-bleedingly bad football and who would be glad to see the back of him. Furthermore, the bad blood between JR and his assistants and Rangers would be a huge stumbling block. To my mind, JR to Rangers is a flight of fantasy.

I’m not saying Ancient is wrong, he could well be right but I think we can only go on who we speak to ourselves out there in the real world.
From the people I speak to regularly, I don’t know if anybody who would be bothered in the slightest if he joined Rangers. I think most would be pretty pleased and I can’t think of one person who would be gutted to lose him.

Rangers supporters will be totally underwhelmed if he's even quoted on the shortlist never mind getting the job.

Surely the only man for the job is KT, that’s his dream, but would Kelty let him go.
Rangers or the Scotland job is the only options I can see him leaving us for.
Before you say it, yes I know we finished 3rd last season.
Couldn't agree more 👍

11-11-2021, 11:24 AM
I would love that.
Callum Davidson probably ahead of Ross but can’t see them even entertaining Jack Ross as a replacement. No chance.
The Gerrard story is definitely going to be interesting to see what happens next - at Villa and the huns. While he’s brought much unity across at Glasgow he now has split the support - with some wishing him luck and others raging he’s left midway through the season.
From a Hibs point of view I think it has to be good news - but at same time Gerrard wasn’t very good in cup competitions..

Provided we don't keep this losing streak going, I think Ross deserves another window of being backed, and to see how we fare once our most important players are back. Ron has been a good owner in terms of backing managers, Ross has a good record in the transfer market, and we tend to play well and pick up points when we are at our strongest. I'd like to see him have more time to see if that will continue.
I fully appreciate that injuries are part and parcel of football, but we have been hit very hard this season.

I’m a bit miffed that discussion of a managerial vacancy at Rangers can deteriorate into a debate about our own manager. There’s already threads here where the pros and cons of JR can be discussed.

The weird thing about Ross is that I agree with every viewpoint - so I guess that means the jury is well and truly out.
I agree with those who are hypercritical as I can't pretend to love the football on show and right now I'm looking down the league rather than up.
I agree with those who support him because I've enjoyed the football at times, his results have been acceptable over the piece and there are mitigating circumstances.
He's got a tough job on his hands picking up enough points between now and January that we don't find ourselves totally derailed and seriously reassessing our expectations of the season, but I also think that he has it in him to have a good January and a strong end to the season.
Rather than focussing all the criticism on the head coach, I still want to have confidence that Hibs know why we've ended up with the squad we've got and that we've learned the correct lessons from the summer. Mathie is under a bus and we've all got to hope that that was the best outcome. I have doubts but time will tell.

“Never heard the like”
Why do you find it so hard to understand some people just think differently to you?

The Scottish media like to make out that Celtic and Rangers have absolutely enormous supports. In comparison to other Scottish clubs they do but nothing out of the ordinary compared to other big clubs.
Looking at their respective followings on social media:
Villa - 1.7 million Twitter followers
Rangers - 670,000 Twitter Followers
Villa - 1.3 million Instagram followers
Rangers - 570,000 Instagram followers
Villa - 3.4 million Facebook followers
Rangers - 750,000 Facebook followers
Now, these figures won't tell the whole story but across all 3 Villa have around 3 times more people engaged enough with their club to be interested enough to follow them. The suggestion that Rangers have a far bigger support doesn't really stand up to scrutiny.
Most of those followers are Hibs fans keeping a watch on SJM 😁

Hopefully he also takes a couple of their top players in January :agree:
Overall, I think he did a mixed job at Rangers. Winning the league unbeaten was a superb achievement with an average team. He did really well in Europe last season, too. That said, he only won one trophy and his cup record was very poor. He experienced more than one woeful run of form in the league.
He certainly brought glamour to Sevco. Their current financial position will surely mean a less prestigious replacement?

Van Bronkhurst won the Dutch league with Feyenoord in 2017 but I'm not sure how good that form is, for decades the better Dutch players have played abroad not in their home country, but it's still marginally better quality than Scotland. He's quite highly rated, but for me he's going to have to do a lot more than becoming the next manager of Sevco to make me change my mind about how good he is, but he was a very good player at Rangers and he played in some great teams such as Arsenal and Barcelona. If he's got any kind of ambition I'd be quite surprised if he went for the Sevco job other than to put himself in the shop window and move on to a better club after a season.

They've got good players but they're selfish ********s who have little interest in co-operating with one another.
Difficult decisions need to be made and it needs to be a strong character with 100% backing of the board and the fans.
I actually think Ole is a great guy and a decent manager but he'll never have that backing there.
Other big clubs have big players with egos but their managers just about manage to get the players to realise it is in their best interests to co-operate with one another. Man Utd have too many who are too stroppy, too inconsistent, too powerful and a few of them need binned.

Left Derby too soon to go to Chelsea, too big a job for a rookie coach, he tried to do what he did at Derby and play the youngsters all too soon and it backfired, Norwich would've been a good gig for him.

He should go abroad and coach, all the best coaches have coached in several countries. Somewhere like Italy or Germany would be good for him, he’s a cracking young coach who was very harshly treated at Chelsea. He took over when they weren’t allowed to sign players and did really well, they had a dip in form and the new guy came in and won the champions league with his team. He can do much better than a yo-yo team like Norwich.

He didn’t get much chance of a chance to. He got them into the champions league against the odds by playing and really bringing on a lot of youngsters. There weren’t many people at the time who thought it was right that he’d been sacked.

Unfortunately their owner has a habit of pulling the trigger at weird time, winning something big doesn't guarantee staying in the job at Chelsea as a few have found out over the years.

True, I'd forgotten about the embargo in the market, unfortunately Abramovich has previous for getting shot of managers at strange times, I wonder how much that experience at Chelsea has hurt Lampard seeing as he was seen as a god there, it must've been his perfect job.

Depends how he gets on surely?
The very fact that Norwich are destined to be relegated anyway gets Lampard off the hook (unless performances are poor), and he then has the opportunity to get them promoted. The general view was that he did well at Derby in the Championship so this is a chance for him to rebuild his reputation and have his time at Chelsea regarded as being too early in his career.

Villa are a big club and will have ambitions to be regular 5-8th Euro spots, maybe Norwich board are fed up being a yoyo club and wanted F arke to make them a solid mid table.
The Smith sacking was a weird one and I thought he had enough in the bank to give till after the January window, Obviously the Norwich board feels the he's good enough, got a hard job there though.
