Managed to get a table at Fazenda for Saturday for 4.30. Haven’t been before so looking forward to it.
Take your time and pace yourself. I've only been once, my eyes were bigger than my belly and I took a cut of every meat that passed. I was stuffed very quickly and don't think I enjoyed it as much as I could have if I wasn't so greedy.
Also, when I went, during one of the many breaks in COVID, they had removed their Market Table, basically where all the sides/salads were found. Instead, they had a little menu that you ordered from and the waiting staff brought the sides to you. These are fully inclusive so order as many as you want, I was a bit shy in doing so and there was some cracking options that I felt I missed out on.

The salad bar in that place is incredible! I tried the chicken heart when they brought it around. Was a wee bit chewy!! All the meats delicious though but as speedy says dont go too bonkers!!

About a mile past North Berwick there's a cafe near Tantallon castle called Drift, perched on a cliff, made out of glammed up shipping containers with lot of glass windows so you can see the seabirds swooping about outside.
The food was great, new chef apparently. I had the brunch all day Scottish breakfast with duck egg and their own home made baked beans, genuinely excellent, the wife had a Cod dish from the lunch menu, with drinks etc it was less than £35. Really memorable place and we'll be back, definitely worth booking on their website because it was busy even at 2pm on a Monday.

We went to Tapas3 on Howden Street last week.
Really enjoyed it. Service was good, was busy and the restaurant is small but we felt neither crowded nor rushed. Food was very good.
6 tapas, bread, 2 deserts, bottle of wine and a service charge for just shy of £80. Can't argue too much with that.

Decent restaurants are not cheap, nor are some bad ones. They're clawing back the money lost during lockdown. They need to survive.
It's at the stage when we only go out for a meal on special occasions.

I went to chop house in leith a few weeks back.
Think everyone in there had an absolute disaster apart from my table. Felt sorry for the staff who done everything they could but they were woefully understaffed with folk just not even turning up for shifts.

We tried Contini a few weeks ago, ended up walking out after having to ask several times for a menu and to order drinks. Nothing against the staff as they were all over the place but the annoying thing was they were still letting walk in come in even though they couldn’t look after the people already there.

Going to Karen’s Unicorn tonight, heard good things so hopefully it meets expectations. Is that Newington mate ? I remember Karens at Meadowbank many years ago and the food never failed, always good reviews. I think they closed and opened up at Newington with same name but Im sure the Mother (Karen) was retiring and her Daughter Karen went alone. Always wanted to visit the Newington place but never got round to it

No mate this is at Abercrombie Place, just back and can’t fault it,food was absolutely top notch. My only complaint is that ever since I can remember I always finish a Chinese meal with a couple of brandy liqueur coffees. They don’t do liqueur or Irish coffees of any description, the guy said they used to but staff shortages meant they stopped doing them! Was a great night though, we started with cocktails at the Alchemist at St James quarter which although expensive was great fun.

It’s more about survival in the current ****-show. Costs are spiralling in every sector and hospitality is no different. My energy bill has gone from about £1500 per month to £7000 in the last couple of months. My beer supplier has just put on a 10% increase across the board, our food suppliers have averaged 11% increase since spring. Wages are going through the roof. It’s mental.

I would say with some conviction that Karen's is the best chinese in Edinburgh. Food is absolutely brilliant, a level above everything else.

Went to original kebabish on dalry road on Sunday. Place looks a bit tired inside and could do with a deep clean. Can't fault the food. Excellent! Lamb chops were amazing as was piripiri chicken.
Serenaded by pished teenage hearts fan as he walked past with a chorus of "Billy boys", then stuck his head in the window of the kitchen, shouted a racist comment then went on his merry way

Karen's unicorn is diagonally opposite the magnum named above.
If you come down from the national portrait gallery, it's at the top of Dublin Street. Other side of the road from stac polly

Went to The Palmerston today.
Was decent enough. Fancied the 1/2 chicken but they’d run out. To be totally honest, the menu isn’t hugely for me and only really left me with the hake that i’d fancy. The hake was nice. Mrs got grouse and it was really chewy. Not sure if grouse is meant to be like that or not though as neither of us have had it before!
Probably won’t go back. Nice place though and great staff and if you’re into ‘fancier’ more obscure stuff like grouse etc then it’s probably worth going.

I had a look at their menu and did a double take: £42 for HALF a chicken ??
No wonder it had run out !

A couple of lovely meals out recently at El Cartel at Teviot, and Parilla Bueno Ayres in musslebrugh.
The Argentinian was particularly good. I had a Picanha steak which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The lamb and chicken skewers were also perfectly cooked and very tasty. Would/will definitely go back.

El Cartel is brilliant although I’m gutted the Teviot one have taken the pork off the menu. Was the best of the lot imo. Roxburgh still does it but it’s nowhere near as good an atmosphere.

Out twice last week.
Sien Viet-vegan Vietnamese, Brougham Place, Tollcross. Fantastic food, really well made but not cheap. It was £90.00 for two, with x2 small beers each. Very tasty.
Kalpna, opposite St Patrick's Sq- vegetarian Indian food. Small menu, but again very tasty. They don't do main courses as side dishes, which I found a bit of a pity. £70.00 for two folk, included two beers, which they overcharged us for. I wasn't paying and the laddie didn't want to point it out. Very nice scran though.

Paco’s in Perth.
A bit like Frankie & Benny’s, but if the food was really good. Large menu which I usually find offputting but didn’t find the quality had suffered at all.
Linguine with king prawns, tomato, chili, and garlic was delicious. Partner had chicken stuffed with haggis. Also very well cooked.
Xangos for pud were a revelation. Tortilla stuffed with cheesecake, fried, dusted in sugar and served with ice cream and raspberry coullis.
Two drinks, £61 in total. Enjoyed it.

Finally went to Tattu. Contemporary Asian food, just off st Andrews square.
Not cheap, but it was very good. Very tasty food, great cocktails, and generally good service in a nice setting.
My wife and I got vouchers for our wedding and it's probably for the best that we did - without ordering anything overly expensive or overindulging on food or drinks we very quickly racked up a £170 bill for the 2 of us.

Kalpna has been there for years and years, used to be very good, I must get back there sometime. If you want to try a different style of Indian head about 50 yards on away from town to Tanjore, it’s South Indian so no Nan bread, instead they do dosais and parottas, soft fluffy bread, and the spices are different (more cinnamon maybe?) it was recommended to me by a boy who likes his curries and was absolutely delicious, £63 for 3 of us which is ridiculous value these days. No drinks licence but lots of shops nearby.

It's certainly not a straight line between cost and quality at that price, no. The taste is better though, but you've got the overall experience to factor in also.
They're playing to the market who want something different and special.

Not a restaurant but was just in Bain’s at Stenhouse Cross. I think McGills pies are better but was passing so called in. With all the hype and popularity of their pies I assumed (wrongly) that they made their own pies cases etc. The boxes of bought in scotch pie cases stacked up told me otherwise. Anyway I had a Bridie, it was okay but nothing special.

Started with The Kitchin on Friday, which was exceptionally good. Saturday night we had dinner in Hanam's - very nice food and a lovely restaurant. Sat out on Victoria Terrace afterward with a Kurdish coffee overlooking the Grassmarket. Very nice indeed.

I went a year or so ago and it was absolutely terrible.
Pasta was massively over cooked, pizza was terrible with a paste like sauce, what I presume was pre-shredded mozzarella due to how burnt the cheese was and dough that had absolutely no flavour.
Someone I was with ordered steak and it was probably about 2 or 3 levels of doneness away from where it should have been.

Standards of authenticity and quality for Italian food have risen in the last few years. I still enjoy going to Lucas in morningside for that kind of gloopy sweet lasagne that passed for Italian food in the 1980s, its still quite satisfying and a fun place to go particularly if you've got kids. But I don't pretend its anywhere near the quality standard of some of the newer Italians like tempo perso up the road in bruntsfield. I imagine Fabios has been similarly 'overtaken' by the competition. Obviously actually over or undercooking is just an error that probably have more to do with staff shortages and the like.
I went to a nice place in the 'Affordable Italian family restaurant' genre over in Kirkintilloch called Nonnas Kitchen. Big place, big menu, very decent quality. We had just cycled 20 miles along the canal from Falkirk and were so hungry we could probably have eaten our boots and enjoyed it mind you but the lasagne seemed very good.

I'd intended to have their tapas bites, but they've changed their menu from the online offer of 3 for £15 up to 4 for £25. Not as good value, but more importantly 4 seemed too much for 1 person, 3 sounded manageable. I assume it was too much hassle for them to do mini dishes and they were a bit of a loss leader that had gotten too popular.
The other food options hadn't changed in price from the old menu - £16 for the steak sandwich was reasonable and pints were £5.50 (ish).
Tonic across the road with an extensive cocktail menu beforehand for pre-dinner drinks and possibly the most attentive service I've ever received too.

The manager in Tonic is a really nice guy, really polite and always grateful for what you do for him, so it's no surprise at all that the service is good.
I always find you can get an idea of what the service in a place will be like by how the management and staff treat people who aren't their customers. If they are rude to suppliers, delivery drivers etc etc then it doesn't generally take much for the mask to slip when dealing with customers either and that spreads through the staff. I find my instincts have rarely been wrong over the years.

My thoughts on it are pretty much the same as yours, interestingly it was a topic of conversation in Winstons last night and was pretty much unanimously praised by everyone in there!
My wife introduced me to Fabios when we started dating in 2019 and we go fairly regularly. We love it. We normally go for steaks and have never had a complaint about them. I normally go for a half portion of pasta for a starter and I've always been impressed (and if that's a half portion of pasta, I'd love to see a full portion as it is massive).

Fabios Restaurant on Glasgow Road, Corstorphine to close and become a Domino’s. Not a place I frequent but plenty of locals on local FB page upset by this news.
I've been there numerous times for various reasons over the last 10-15 years. It was always thoroughly decent. Nothing hugely special, but decent food for a decent price.
A shame it's being shut for a dominos. TBH I thought there was one already in corstorphine?

The owner of Tonic, although I don't know if he's the manager, is the son of former hearts owner Chris Robinson.

I doubt it, that's about a 7 mile journey for delivery driver. If you're looking for excellent curry around Easter Road try Gautam's on London Road at Meadowbank, brilliant family run place with great food.:aok:

I am not in it at the moment but our curry club meets here once a month and we've never had a bad meal or bad experience from these guys, excellent food and service, although being good it can get busy. They have a second restaurant called Solti in Drummond Street which is just as good.

Last few weeks, all in Corstorphine
Prana, bitterly disappointed and don’t get the hype for this place. Both curries we had were bland and wife’s starter was poor. Will not return and prefer Eastern Pavillion.
Napole Pizzeria, was recommended this place several times by barman in Winstons so finally tried it. Decent enough pizza, didn’t wow me and I sill prefer La Favorita
The Torfin, never had a bad meal in here, some say it’s a bit pricey for what it is but I quite like it and feel prices are reasonable enough. Half price Mexican fajitas on a Wednesday too!
Toby Carvery, not really my thing but went last night after wife and son fancied it. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed my three courses 😀

Strangely enough there was a mention of this rumour from the barman in Winstons but not heard anything concrete. I know they’re giving up the lease on the other Ranch they have in the city and just concentrating on the new one they have just opened at Sighthill that they relocated from Corstorphine. The owners have places in Spain too but I would be surprised as the Torfin seems to do really well.

I was gonna post on this subject earlier, I've been dining at Fabio's for 20+ years as it was literally 100 years from my house. In the last 5 years there have been unsubstantiated rumours of them closing every so often, even making the pages of the EEN. Every time the rumours raise their heads, local folk on local social media kick off and the patronage increases again.
The cynic would suggest that this is a clever marketing ploy by Peter/Pietro Corolla?!?

Fabios has been "up for sale" for years in that they'd sell if an attractive offer is made. There's still a few years on the lease so needs to be as a going concern. Dominos want the building and have approached the building owner but don't want to pay for the going concern so a bit of stalemate. Owner would sell but can't kick out Fabios so ball in Dominos court to make it worth their while which I hope doesn't come any time soon. Best pizza in town if you ask me!
Edinburgh Live obviously saw the planning request and made a story out of it. Sure Pietro etc have no complaints to the free marketing.

I see La Favorita restaurant will not reopen in it’s former guise as a Pizzeria but as as a new restaurant Antonietta. Still owned and run by the Vittoria Group, will be interesting to see the finished restaurant, they don’t often get it wrong, new concept sounds great. La Fav delivered is still operational next door having rebranded and changed its menus.

I did a wee tour of Turkey last week around the Scotland game. The absolute highlight was lunch at the Nusr-Et steakhouse in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Outstanding experience from start to finish. 3 courses and drinks for £100 for two of us (would probably have cost me nearer £500 in any of his other gaffs). Beef Sushi to start, New York and fillet steaks with lots of sides for main and finished off with THE best baklava I've ever tasted with Turkish ice cream.
The food, the service and the theatre all lived up to the hype!

Bit late in responding to this but I got takeaway Pizza and chicken sides a couple of times after it first opened.
The first time got pizza which was tasty but luke warm. The JFC Chicken with hot sauce and chips was brilliant.
Decided to give it a second go on basis of the chicken. Same result, cold pizza, great chicken.
Think their pizza style with thin base better enjoyed fresh than via delivery. Prob wouldn't get pizza from there again as a result.

Cool Jade Chinese opposite the Zoo last night. Food was decent enough and service was great. Coffee machine was broken so only filter coffee available for our guests which wasn’t a massive problem. Both the wife and I chose our usual liqueur coffees to finish, my Brandy coffee and her Tia Maria one were probably the weakest in alcohol tasting liqueur coffees we have ever had. Also found the dining room quite dark and had to use torch on my phone to read the menu.
Overall ranking this place in my recent Chinese restaurant visits is :
1.Karen’s Unicorn
2. Chinese Manor House
3. Cool Jade
To have two pretty decent Chinese restaurants in Corstorphine is ideal.

Agree with first two. I got food poisoning from Cool Jade so it has put me off.
Not as fancy as those in your post but Wongs is also a good Corstorphine Chinese restaurant.

Recently had lunch at Amber Rose on Rose Street, yes it’s pub food but it was very good and somewhere I would return.
Love that place , Very cozy wee setup and lots of tv's for the world cup , Foods good , If i was being pernickety i prefer my bacon crispy rather than fatty but no big deal

Was in a wee Deli/Cafe in the Grassmarket called Pirlous and had an excellent lunch there. It is run by a Persian guy and the food has leanings toward Persian cuisine but has Scottish and middle Eastern influence too. I had the soup of the day which was a beautiful sweet potato and veg soup service with a slice of shop baked focaccia olive bread. I then had their Mykonos Halloumi sandwich, grilled halloumi with sliced and grilled courgette, fresh spinach and an amazing chilli jam. Also had a really good flat white coffee. They bake all their bread themselves and they are looking to get a sourdough focaccia on the go soon. Really nice people and great food, not open evenings to just the lunch and breakfast options but well worth a visit. Very reasonable pricing too for the area.

I love the Manor House, been to Cool Jade twice (though both were a few years back), and wasn’t impressed enough to try it a third time.
Would say Karen's Unicorn is the best Chinese in Edinburgh right now. Kweilin on Dundas St is also up there. The Loon Fung used to be amazing but since it changed hands (last year I think) then it has gone way downhill, which is quite distressing given how good it was. :boo hoo:
The Chinese Manor house does an amazing salt and chilli duck dish, best Chinese in Corstorphine by a mile for me.
Each to their own but I can't believe people ever thought Wong's was a good Chinese.

Tempo Perso is another good option in the ‘mid priced authentic family Italian’ category in Bruntsfield. I had ravioli stuffed with artichokes, two others had the meatballs, including a round of beers and a coffee afterwards for under £60. Family run place, great service, there’s a lot of competition in the area but I’d go back without hesitation

We went to The Jolly on Christmas Eve. Always think it’s a funny place as I’m never blown away by the food but always come away having really enjoyed myself. I should stress the food isn’t bad, I think I’ve just maybe ordered the wrong thing they’re the last few times and haven’t learnt my lesson.
I think the owner does a brilliant job of just making you feel really welcome and appreciated, we were clearly surrounded by regulars and people I know have gone there for years. I think it’s just a really good value, friendly restaurant with excellent service.
Looking forward to going back again.

The Butchershop in Glasgow last night for the girlfriend's old man's 70th. Very good indeed. Menu was similar to Chop House but I found it far better, seemed cheaper and the staff much friendlier. Chateaubriand with hand cut chips, mac & cheese, garlic shrooms and green beans between 2 with starters (she had scallops) and pudding....£75 each, including tip. Neither of us were drinking so no wine, which definitely keeps the cost down. Highly recommended.

The news room is decent on Leith Street and very close to Waverley. Alternatively and just as close is The Guildford Arms if you like your real ales.
Went to the Newsroom, was very good if a tad pricey. Because we were eating they gave us table service and they were very attentive in looking after us. There was quiz night starting at 9pm so we left and continued drinking at the Black Bull which I hadn't been to for decades. Thanks for suggestion.

As with every rule, there are exceptions, but this is pretty much something I've been banging on about for years.
In general, I'm not a massive Chinese takeaway fan (prefer Indian) but my nearest is now Salt Chilli at Oxgangs Broadway. Been using it for 18 months now and it's better than any Chinese I had in the Corstorphine area.

Byron burger on the Royal Mile for the young teams birthday. I wasn’t expecting much since the whole chain is in administration/receivership/some sort of trouble. And you definitely felt the place was on its last legs. Quality of the whole gourmet burger/wings/various fries/greens was mixed and despite there being about 20 desserts on the menu all they had was ice cream and smoothies. January in the restaurant sector in the current climate, a few days before pay day notwithstanding , it was also almost empty.

I don’t think that is a reason for them closing. They could easily get a card reader. I never carry cash but I go to an ATM when I need to for my local Chinese.

Less and less people go to the takeaways and order online, nearly every Chinese in Porty take cash only and TBH the majority aren't very good. I think the cash only thing is a tax scam.

This could go on the pet peeves thread but it is a real bugbear of mine when sides aren't included with a steak. Piece of nonsense when you have to add on the chips and sauce, etc.

I replied as you suggested that takeaways were losing business as people don’t carry cash. It’s not the case is it? As you say people either order online. Or they go in person and pay cash. Nobody is being put off buying a takeaway due to cash only policies.

Mother India last night for the 1st time since covid. As good as ever, noticeable hike in prices but that's par for the course in the restaurant industry. 6 dishes between 3 was plenty, portions may look a bit stingey on first glance but there was a fair bit of eating in them. Only just managed to clear the plates. 2 rice, 1 nan and 3 soft drinks, just under 70 bucks.

My mates had organised to go there on my stag do for my first marriage and had negotiated an amazing deal. Food was a certain amount per head (can’t remember what it actually was but it wasn’t ridiculous) and they just kept bringing stuff until we said stop.

Not a meal but I was at a cocktail tasting at Summerhall Drinks Lab in the old Royal (shortened name for Richard) Vet building a couple of weeks ago.
Would heartily recommend. We were given vouchers as a wedding present and the Tiki tasting took our fancy. 2 full size cocktails that you mix yourself and 3 half size prepared for you. All the drinks are explained and then the history of Tiki drinks culture and the wider story if the culture(s) is spoken about why you are drinking. The guys who ran it were great.
They do all sorts of tastings with various themes and formats. I'll definitely be going again (albeit I probably won't bookend 5 lethally strong cocktails with numerous pints next time).

They do all sorts of tastings with various themes and formats. I'll definitely be going again (albeit I probably won't bookend 5 lethally strong cocktails with numerous pints next time).
Would also highly recommend their rum & Donuts evenings 👍🏻

Was at the Little Chartroom on Sunday. Been meaning to go for a while and finally got there thanks to a generous voucher for Christmas. Wasn't disappointed, food was excellent along with the wine pairing. Great service as well. Not cheap but felt it was value for money.

Can anyone recommend a good Mexican restaurant?
Bodega on Leith Walk. Specialises in tacos, but the Buffalo chicken wings were really really good too. They know how to make a margarita as well.
El cartel I was disappointed with, don’t like their guacamole at all.

Another vote for Bodega. It is one of our favourite places. Going on Saturday after the game. Their black bean dip is awesome.
I would say it is more Mexican-fusion though. They do BYOB as well.

Mexican is one of my favourite types of food
Viva Mexico on Cockburn St, and Miros Cantina on Rose St, have been restaurants I’ve visited regularly, and never been disappointed
There’s a new Street Food area opening up
In the Omni Centre on 25th Feb. Seating for 500 inside and outside
Might be worth checking what they are offering
Miro’s Cantina has been my go to but been told since it changed hands it’s rubbish.

Bread Meats Bread have a good lunch offer. Choice of burger, regular or sweet potato fries and a largish soft drink for £11. Thought it was a bit more of a treat, a change from a MacDonalds and at the same time not too pricey for families who may be working with tighter budgets with the school hols always adding to spending more money than you might on an average week.

I'd recommend their sunshine on beef. Mostly for the taste, but it's also a fun thing to say. :greengrin
They need to bring back their tater tots though!

Not a meal but I was at a cocktail tasting at Summerhall Drinks Lab in the old Royal (shortened name for Richard) Vet building a couple of weeks ago.

I've noticed offers for this place on Itison. I'm not a fan of cocktails and anyone who's in a round on a night out who decides to order one :greengrin

Sort of agree with this. I really like El Cartel , but Bodegas a step up.
(But I do think El Cartels Margaritas are better)

That site has always been a weird one and nobody seems to have made a long term success of it.

Was it the old Constitution Bar?Yes, the fly half after that. Before it was bar java and maybe a few other incarnations. Nobody's managed to give it the longevity of the other pubs down there

Haven't been for years but we used to go during the day at weekends and it was quite popular. Quiet through the week so maybe the weekend business wasn't enough to cover the midweek losses.

It's a very big unit, over 2 floors as well. Energy costs alone must be huge.

Bodega was excellent on Saturday.
Black bean dip to start. Then 4 pairs of tacos between us: buffalo chicken, baja fish (it used to be cod but they seem to be using a different white fish now), tempura prawn and the lamb croquette special.

I go to the one on Leith Walk fairly often.
Consistently decent and handy for a scran after a Hibs game too.

They are.
This could go on the pet peeves thread but it is a real bugbear of mine when sides aren't included with a steak. Piece of nonsense when you have to add on the chips and sauce, etc.
I want to go again even more now 😁
On the Mexican chat - was years ago I was there but I liked topalabamba on Lothian road. Probably more so than El Cartel and the one at St Andrew square whose names escapes me.

Went to Rubab on Shandwick place last night, the service and food were tremendous. The tandoori mixed grill was probably the best one I have ever had. It was called Rubab when we booked it but is currently undergoing a name change.

DiMaggios is good but it’s a chain so up to you if that suits your needs or not. Not Chinese but Sapporo Teppanyaki on Ingram Street is unbelievable, pricey but I’d say worth it. Mharsanta on Bell Street, Moskito on Bath Street, Green Gates in the Merchant City all worth a mention too.

Good Italian in Hope Street, sorry can't remember the name, few years since I was there. It's close to Central Station, very busy.
