I went to Jamie's Italian a while back now, cos the wife fancied it. I thought the food was pretty bland and the portion sizes were crap. It's been a long time though, so maybe it's improved now.
I tried Jamie's once a couple of years ago and found it to be overpriced crap. Maybe it has improved.

Anyone tried Crolla's in Musselburgh?
I've eaten a couple of times there Matty.
The setting is really nice, as is the layout inside.
Food seemed decent enough, though I rarely go out to Italian restaurants so I'm not the best judge. Last time I was there I had a wild mushroom risotto which was prepared just fine and was substantially portioned. Other dishes at the table looked good as well.
Couldn't fault the service and the prices seemed reasonable enough. If it's dinner rather than lunch then parking is easy, given where it's located.

Went to the Guru tonight and found it to be very good. The naan bread was about the size of a canoe so don't think about ordering one for each person. Had a hot and spicy jalfrezei which was really good and the guy must have beat the crap out of the lamb for about five hours with a lump hammer to get it so tender. Thoroughly enjoyable and the service was very friendly, and well priced as well. It's a byob place but worth a visit if you enjoy Indian food.

Never been but always been somewhere I intended to try - be good to hear your thoughts.
Monteiths - nothing spectacular, food was 'nice' but would expect nothing less for the price. Highlight was the crispy bacon and butterscotch, went surprisingly well together.
The price of the cocktails is unbelievable, I had one at nearly £10 and it tasted like a kids slushy.
Decent but probably more for the tourist crowd. Would not rush back.

Edit: It was excellent again, very busy with folk from the rugby but still great friendly service and fantastic food.

Dining in Divino's on Wednesday night, complete new authentic Italian menu from the Italian Head chef. Recently had a kitchen refit which has doubled the size of the kitchen so looking forward to some great food.

Had a really nice meal in Mother India's Cafe at the west end of Argyle Street, Glasgow. They serve tasty Indian grub, in tapas portions. Great selection, reasonably priced.

Riverlife - Caribbean restaurant on dalry road.
Very nice food, good sized portions and reasonably priced. Extremely well priced if you also have a tastecard.
I called scallops wrapped in prosciutto followed by lamb ribs with potato dauphinoise and a can of coke (forgot it was BYOB) for £15!
A lot of other dishes on the menu looked good also - I'll be back!

OTRO - Coates Crescent (used to be the Indian Cavalry Club)
Was there yesterday after the rugby, superb Scottish food expertly cooked with some great flavours from a very talented chef.Presentation and quality of food really was good with excellent varied bottled beer selection and decent wine list. Six of us spent about 3 hours in there and service was top notch. Well worth a visit.

Tried Passorn Thai Brasserie on Hanover Street. Was excellent. Service top notch and food was absolutely brilliant. Quite pricy, although they do a set menu for £12.50ish, but worth it imo.
Went to Chaoproya a couple of days later. Service again excellent but food wasn't quite on a par with Passorn. The view is obviously brilliant but truth be told I was a bit disappointed overall. I had been before and would say it has been better previously.
Finally went for a drink at Hoot The Redeemer. Hipster by numbers and overpriced. Oh and I also ended up in the Wetherspoons at Waverley that used to be Jimmy Chungs; £4.05 a pint of Tennents or £4.95 and Amstel. What the **** is that all about?

Was at pizzaria 1926 last night and it was excellent. Probably the best pizza ive had outside naples. The deep fried sharing platter starter was realy good as well. Plenty sea food involved but the pasta ball with a little cream and peas was the higlight of that.
Got a takeaway pizza from there on Sunday. Was really good. Wouldn't go as far to say the best pizza I've had in Edinburgh but I'd definitely go back. £5.90 for a takeaway 12" margharita aswell which is very good.
Best pizza in Edinburgh for me is from Dough on Rose Street.:agree:
Has anyone tried pizza from Soderberg/Peters Yard? Seen a few reviews in papers recently ranking it as one of the best in Edinburgh, it's certainly not somewhere I would have went looking for pizza.

Tried Dough on Rose Street today and was bitterly disappointed after all the hype I had read about it. It doesn't even come in my top three in Edinburgh and nowhere near the quality or Oregano or La Favorita in my opinion. We sat in the shop so the comparison to the others I have mentioned was fair as I always sit in there too. Massive doughy crust, far too big which actually reduced the toppings to that of a 7" pizza instead of the 10" we both ordered, far too much cheese which made the pizza too wet and overall pretty average, I won't be back.

That's not good. I've not been for a couple of months now but when I last went it was magic. Hopefully you just had a bad experience and they've not tinkered with the recipes.

The last time I went to a restaurant was 13 years ago!
I was a Salesman for a food service company and knowing how little items cost it made me question the mark up.
Think of this: we happily order an 8oz fillet or whatever but when we order a fish dish there is no mention of weight.
Sometimes fish is more expensive than steak. A complete rip off, b0ys. And girls.

I'd be keen to know what sort of fish is a rip-off.
If it really bothers you, you could always ask the waiter to show you the fish prior to ordering so you i)know the size and ii)can check the freshness - FWIW - fish is NOT overpriced. You go catch it in the deep seas and tell me it isn't value for money.

Indeed - I'd imagine that pollution will happily order a delivery pizza - probably the food with the highest mark-up yet he won't eat out

This restaurant is over in Paphos/Cyprus so perhaps a new thread is required but thought I'd add anyway as folk will be going on their travels soon and Paphos may be on someones itinerary.
After eating too much Cypriot Greek foods we wanted a "proper" Steakhouse, we were advised by many local business owners to try "The Lodge" and we were not disappointed. It's a steakhouse with a South African flavour (the place is swimming in Braai sauce), the owners are from that neck of the woods and have worked in hospitality for a long time.
I was initially going to have a starter followed by t-bone but I was convinced to share a prime rib with my wife. The uncooked weight was 1.2Kg's so no starter was required. Even though it was a large chunk of flesh we opted for it to be cooked medium rare and my wife was a little concerned it would be blue/uncooked in the middle,,,,it wasn't. The steak was cooked thoroughly and although red in the middle it was warm, buttery & tasty. The sides of mash, wedges & greens were exactly that, a side show as the meat was the main event!
Price wise it was dear for the area but the quality was excellent and washed down with a not to shabby Bordeaux the bill for 3 of us (Daughter elected for the rib-eye) including tip was $150. Considering our average spends for an evening meal was around $70 you can see how relatively it wasn't cheap.

Was at the Pompadour for the first time on Wednesday. It's a stunning setting.
While it's silly expensive, the food was delicious and seasonal and I would go back without hesitation (once my credt card has regained consciousness). Seven course tasting menu and I would happily have every one of them as a full course in its own right, which was a surprise as I wasn't really anticipating a couple of them being so good - one was an asparagus and goats' cheese (not a huge fan of ether) dish early on that just really worked and the second was a blue cheese whipped cream that managed to be surprisingly really subtle.
You expect the service at somewhere like that to be faultless and it was (though I did overhear one of the waiters at the next table assuming two women were mother and daughter. Turned out they were sisters....ooyah!)

I think The Abercromby Place restaurant is an off shoot from one in St Stephens Street some years ago.
Daughter treated us to a takeaway from St Andrews in Porty last night, opted for doner kebab, horrible, meat was like strips of leather, pitta bread bone hard, salad was just a pile of mush & the chips were re-fried. Makes sticking to the diet a lot easier now 😧

I acknowledge I'm a bit of a cheerleader for La Garrigue but have to big it up again.

The service was exemplary, couldn't fault it.

I'd happily eat there if I was looking for somewhere before the Kings for example, but it wouldn't be up if there if I was just looking for an Indian.

I hate soggy pizza, too many topping and too much cheese make it too wet and hence the flop. I always ask for it to be made slightly crisp than normal, a good hot stone makes that no problem.

Have no idea why they drench it in olive oil absolutely no need, a sensible amount in the dough mixture is sufficient.

Not in Naples but I visited Capri, Positano and Sorrento a couple of weeks ago; pizzas in the restaurants were first class(for my preference) thin crispy bases, enough cheese & tomato and very fresh fresh meat and/or veg. On our first night we arrived pretty late and we're directed to a local cafe, pizza was pretty doughy, had loads of cheese on it and too much oil, toppings fresh and tasty and place was rammed with locals. Pasta , gnocchi and seafood were top notch too.

I'd agree with that. We went to the Market Street one first and it was OK but not great and the staff were a bit pretentious. We were then invited to a friend's birthday lunch at the Leith one and it was way better even with better service even though we were a big group.

My wife went to the Leith one at lunch time and it was dreadful so she decided to complain and they couldn't have been any better. They gave us a free meal for two and didn't charge us for the drinks we had and it was absolutely superb.
Would definitely go back.

Posted about this place before but been at Dine Edinburgh at the Traverse twice again in the last couple of weeks. The market or pre-theatre menu is ridiculously good value, with the food being very good and really well executed. Service is tremendous and the location and set-up are great.
It's been a bit of a go-to restaurant when attending the Usher Hall, because the location is so good, but has shifted into the kind of place I would choose for going out with friends in its own right - because of the qualities described above,

Staff very courteous and polite
Will go again, but probably not on a Sunday as it was very very busy
Anyone know if this privately owned?

Been to the leith depot a couple times recently. Had the skate first time which came with, prawns, mash and greens. Fish and chips more recently. Both were good and would go back. Focus of the menus is definitely on seafood although they do have other options.
Stand out from eating there though is the scottish affogatto. Vanilla ice cream and deep fried mars bar toped with a shot of buckfast.

I'm no foodie by any stretch of the imagination so pub grub suits me down to the ground and it was the value of it and service that really impressed me. Was almost bang on £20 for two main meals and a couple of pints of juice.
We were at the fort earlier in the day and were toying with the idea of a five guys but I couldn't bring myself to spend the best part of £30 on fast food that's alright but nothing special imo, the volume of the music in there is far too loud for me not to get annoyed by it too.

Stuck record for La Garrigue but had lunch there at the weekend and then attended last night for a tasting menu based around wines from a vineyard in the Languedoc - La Garrigue's owner had become friends with the owners and organised an evening around it.
The food was delicious, highlight was a reduced red wine sauce with shallots and marrow fat accompanying monkfish. It was exceptional, especially given I would never associate a red wine sauce or a red wine pair with monkfish.
All told, it's consistently been the best food I've had in Edinburgh, very reasonably priced, in a lovely setting with great views and fantastic service. I couldn't recommend it more.

Finally got to dishoom! Was really good. I recommend going with people you have similar tastes with and can readily share good as it allows you to try more.
Service was good, food was good, got all we could eat and a couple drinks each for under £40 including tip. I'd recommend trying a lassi for anyone that goes; not sure if you can get it in supermarkets - but it's somewhere between milk and yogurt and comes with various flavourings (mango and fennel for me).

Adding to the previous chop house chat, i went to the leith one for breakfast last weekend. For me its up there with the scran and scailie for best breakfast in Edinburgh. The portions were unbelieveable; Huge wheel sausage, and the haggis and black pudding come as big rectangular chunks. Definitely a breakfast to go home for a rest after rather than to start your day on.
Was also at andrew ushers recently. Good pub burgers at a very reasonable prices. Always nice stuff on tap to go along with it as well.

I've been going for about the last five years but I believe it's been around for a lot longer than that.

Food was instantly forgettable. Ramsay ripped it to shreds a couple of years later so maybe it's had the desired effect.
I seem to remember he made John Michel leave the kitchen. Perhaps that was the problem

That's interesting. I knew Ramsay had bigged it up massively back around 2010 or thereabouts but didn't know he had gone back on that.
I first started going around 2012, but more consistently in the last three years, solely based on experience. Jean Michel was definitely front of house by then, and that's been the case since. More so with the focus on the wine tours, marketing and themed nights I suspect - the wine tours in particular seem to be very popular. For sure there's been turnover in the kitchen over that period!
It's not competing with Kitchin, Jack or the starred hotels but it does do genuine Languedoc cuisine with genuine Languedoc wines at a decent price given it's in the city centre. That's one of my favourite types of cuisine and it's hard to see past it!

There's not many decent Indian restaurants in the Livingston area with Khushis in Mid Calder being the best.
However, the Bay Leaf in Pumpherston is now up there.
Had tried this restaurant years ago but had not gone back as the food was only average. Had noticed earlier this year that there were several very good reviews on the food so thought would have to give it another try.
Was very pleased to find it had new owners and the quality of the food was superb. It's now run by a couple of guys that had worked in Khushis & Mithas in Edinburgh & has a chef that had been in Khushis also.
Since then my wife and I have been back several times and enjoyed the food very much. We'll certainly be regulars there from now on and would recommend any lovers of Indian food to give it a try if you're in the area, doubt you'll be disappointed and like us will likely return for more.

Had a fabulous dad and daughter day out to celebrate her 40th and my 70th at L'Enclume, Simon Rogan's gourmet mecca in Cartmel, Cumbria. We had the 17 item tasting menu with the accompanying 'wine flight' interrupted by a superb cheese board and yet more dedicated wines. The three hour extravaganza was unbelievably delicious and stands head and shoulders above any restaurant experience I've ever had. I remember seeing it on 'The Trip' a few years ago and thought I'd maybe get there one day. Another item scored off the bucket list. I'll go back for my 80th. :top marks

I've heard from a few people that it's the best restaurant in Edinburgh right now. It got such a bad press for a while and lost its star and rightly so, but they've made a real effort to turn things around. The exact opposite of the place in Henderson Street that just refused to accept any sort of criticism.

Somewhere a bit further away but ate in Rocpool,on the shores of the Ness in Inverness city centre on Tuesday.
The service was incredibly attentive, despite the restaurant being fully-booked and hence very busy. As you would imagine, almost all of the other customers were tourists and just hearing the staff talking to the surrounding tables demonstrated how strong they were on customer service, explaining dishes in a polite, friendly and engaging manner.
Scallops for starter, which were as fresh as you like. The highlight was venison for the main. It was potentially slightly rare for most folk but absolutely perfect for me - I will order venison pretty regularly when eating out and I can't remember ever having it so well-prepared.
Close second to the main was the dessert. I'm not sweet-toothed so invariably will go for the cheese board. They promised three cheeses, but provided four. The three promised ones were a hard, soft and blue all made from ewe's milk. I love sheep's milk cheese so it was about as perfect a finisher as it could possibly get!
Mix of wines and port by the glass, which were all fine. It's not cheap but absolutely well worth it and on a par or better with the majority of places I've eaten in, in Edinburgh. Will be rebooking for next time I'm up in Inverness.

Went to Martin Wishart for lunch on Saturday (quite different to my usual pre match routine) and a 12:15 booking gave us time for a 5 course tasting menu and a quick drink before kick off.
The food was excellent and it's amazing how much flavour they can pack in to the various small elements of the dishes. The plates were like a work of art. Very difficult to fault any of it. The service was also excellent as you'd expect.
The only small issue I have is that it was £75 for the 5 course taster (£120 with wine pairing), which I thought was pretty steep for a lunch menu. Castle Terrace, which is equally good only don't think it has a star, was a lot cheaper for lunch - £40 IIRC, which I think is more consistent with other similar restaurants.

I went to Brewhemia on Friday (used to be Sportsters\City) for a bite to eat before a fringe show.
What a mistake. Showed us to some seats, gave us some menus then ignored us. It was busy, but not so busy they didn't have empty tables or a lot of waiting staff just stood around. Gave them a chance, waited, waited a bit more then just got up and left.
So, er, yeah. It's done up nicely inside but their service doesn't exist. That's all I can say about it.

Went to El Cartel on Thistle Street the other day. Absolutely hands down the best Mexican food I've ate in Edinburgh, probably even the best I've ate full stop. Fairly small menu but I went wanting tacos which they have about 6 different types of so that didn't bother me. 2 tacos was £6.50, I got 4 and and 4 was a lot of food although 3 would maybe be not quite enough. I never drank but they do frozen margaritas which looked very good aswell.

Strongly recommend Guru Balti at fountain bridge just opposite Victor Paris. Usual menu but really nice, large portions, and good service.

Anything is an improvement on the Oak. When I first moved to the West of Edinburgh we ventured into the Oak before a meal at the Eastern Pavillion (which is brilliant, by the way) but it's the sort of place you just want to walk out of as soon as you walk in. Good riddance to a crap pub.

Worst Restuarant I have ever been in.
Twice been in and never got to main course as service was so slow. At a family meal in there we left after a 3 hour wait in which we were only given starters. Kept being told the food was coming but we eventually lost patience.
The other time was a night out with friends when we gave it another try. we had booked for 7pm a table and were told to wait in the bar, then we got told table would be ready about 8:30, so we decided to go to Abida.

You're right. Disgusting pint of Guinness. Sour. Always a sign that the lines haven't been cleaned regularly. Glasses always had bubbles up the inside ditto not cleaned properly. Rare times I went in there were a small group of nasty locals.
It's due to be a steakhouse I gather. Better be good right next to the Wetherspoons which takes trade away from all the Corstorphine pubs.

Very good quality for the price. Previously had been twice in the evening, much more expensive but very good for a special occasion

Probably not a great idea, it's a bit like back in 'nam, I've seen some things.
The less the general public know the better!!
About 20 years ago I worked in City Limits in the Gyle.
I personally witnessed one of the chef's knocking a water jug off the shelf which landed and smashed into a colander full of iceberg lettuce .
He washed it under the tap and was ready to serve it untill a couple of us noticed and stopped him.
He said it would have been fine as he'd washed it.
Also seen the very same chef step down from cleaning the wall behind the frier and stepped directly into the hot fat he had just drained from the frier.

Wandered onto this forum for the first time in years, having worked in more than a couple of these kitchens I find this a highly interesting read. If some of you knew the things I knew behind closed doors some opinions would change for sure!
Any other .netters here chefs in the city??

Slightly further afield, I was in Leeds at the weekend.
We went to Crafthouse, and its sister bar Angelica in the city centre.
They both sit on the top of the Trinity Centre, which is a big shopping mall, though they have their own elevator entrance at street level.
Angelica is on what would be the 6th floor and has views all over the city rooftops, both from indoors and from a roof terrace. Leeds is very reminiscent of Glasgow, lots of interesting architecture from the time of Empire. Drinks were Edinburgh prices, the bar is cocktail-orientated, service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely return.
Crafthouse is on the floor below. We had the tasting menu with accompanying wine. It was very reasonably priced, the wines especially, given they were free-poured and generous. The wines genuinely matched the food, which isn't always the case. The courses themselves were slight - as a tasting menu is meant to be, I guess - but all very good. Normally with a tasting menu you have a couple of dishes that you think were stand-outs. I'd happily order six out of the seven as full courses, they were very impressive.
Definite return next time I'm in Leeds and would heartily recommend it. As stated, the food was good, the service was very pleasant, the ambience was great and the cost was definitely value for money.

Went to the Ivy in Edinburgh on Sunday and really can't fault it. I've had better food elsewhere but the overall service, ambiance and experience I'm going to find pretty hard to beat.
I'm not sure what the dinner menu is like but for a bit of brunch it's absolutely exquisite but without the extortionate prices.
2 courses for two people and a couple of drinks was just shy of £100 but could easily do it for £30 which is on par with many other places for brunch.

We were in El Cartel a couple of weeks ago and the food was fantastic - fresh, hot and not waiting forever. Makes it easier when you order just whatever dishes you want, then get more after if you're still a bit hungry.
Busy - and you can't book - but we only had a 20 minute wait which was more than enough for a quick pint across the road in Bon Vivant.
Would've only paid about £35 for the 2 of us if it was food only...but the beers and the margueritas got the better of us!!

I was back up in Inverness earlier in the week and ate out twice.
First up, was Cafe One, just by the castle, less than ten minutes walk from the city centre.
Despite being into October, the restaurant was absolutely packed. Must be around seventy covers and the tables were constantly being refreshed. Real mixture of locals and tourists.
The food was exceptional - for starters we had tempura king prawns and scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly and came wrapped in pancetta, sitting on black pudding, potato rosti and a pea puree. It was delicious but maybe didn't need the rosti (though it was sliced exquisitely thin and was lovely)
For mains we had salmon with prawns, avocado and mango. Salmon was seared very well and a delight to eat. We also had monkfish in a tempura batter which was fresh and light. The highlight was the fries however - they were dry and crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, just how you would want fries, but were infused with a mild curry flavour. Absolutely delicious and I couldn't figure out quite how they did it. I asked the owner but he was guarded in his reply! Silly as it sounds, they were genuinely worth going back for in their own right!
I would recommend Cafe One as a good night out and will certainly return, next time I'm in Inverness. The service was attentive and friendly, despite it being incredibly busy. It's a short walk from the centre and the prices are reasonable, certainly no more than Edinburgh and in fairness, they matched the quality of the dishes.
Second dinner was at Rocpool. As per last time, it was fully-booked so reservations would appear to be essential. Decent wine list, by the bottle and the glass. For starters we had a crab and seafood broth which was simply outstanding, and scallops again. The broth was deliciously rich and packed full of well-prepared seafood. The scallops were accompanied with mini chorizo, possibly slightly too much but tasty nonetheless!
Mains were a seafood linguine and the venison. As per the starter, the linguine was heavy with protein, lots of seafood sitting in a delicious sauce. The venison was delicately tender and absolutely delicious. It sat on a parsnip puree and a black pudding base, with roasted potatoes.
Overall, the dishes were really well-balanced, well-flavoured and expertly cooked. Absolute pleasure to eat.
As I think I posted last time I was at Rocpool, we had the cheese board. Unusually, it is entirely made up of ewes' milk cheese, although they stick to the standard hard- soft -blue formula. I love sheep milk cheese so it was great for me.
Rocpool is very central, the food is very, very good and the prices aren't anything beyond what one would pay in Edinburgh. I would recommend it without a shadow of a doubt, though pre-booking is probably critical for most months of the year.

We tried McDonald's at Fife Leisure Park. Their Big Mac burger came served in a shabbily branded cardboard box, which was functional rather than serving any kind of aesthetic purpose. Handily, the lid of the box made for an excellent makeshift bowl for the large fries served with the burger.
The fries, infused with lashings of salt rather than curry and that, are hit and miss. The first ones served were crisp but by the time we got to the end of them they were soggy, limp, and cold. The addition of the barbeque sauce saved the day, its tangy sharpness complimenting the fries perfectly.
My youngest chose the packet of six chicken nuggets, the batter was chewy rather than crispy, and I felt a distinct lack of pride in their preparation. She munched then all with a good helping of ketchup, uniquely served up in a wee paper thimble thing, from a pump at a nearby stand.
I had the South African Stack, which was lopsided in its preparation, so the majority of the sauce hung over one side of the burger while the other side stayed dry. I was picking bits of salad out of my teeth for half an hour afterwards and was left disappointed with the burger.
The meal did initially fill everyone up, but after a short while the kids were asking for something else to eat and they'll probably have some digestive comeback following the meal.
Two stars.

Do fancy L'Enclume though, did you stay there as well?
I stayed over there a few years back. The food was awesome as you say, and I don’t think it’s too bad a price compared to other restaurants which aren’t on the same level - probably because of its location though.
Rogan also has a bistro in the village, Rogan and co, which is where you get breakfast if you stay over, which was also amazing. The b&b was £99 then, probably more now though.

Went to the Auld Hundred last night with Mrs Crab and we both had the signature steak pie which was fantastic, huge portion, perfectly cooked melt in the mouth chunks of beef with rich gravy served with freshly fired puff pastry with carrots, broccoli and your choice of chips or potatoes. A winner every time in my book.
I skipped dessert and went for a coffee while the Mrs had a Strawberries with cream and vanilla ice-cream merengue thingy. I didn't taste it as I don't like that sort of thing but she says it was brilliant.
Total bill of £31 on the nose for 2 mains, a dessert, a coffee and 4 pints of soft drinks. Bargain.

I've mentioned Pizzeria 1926 on here before but went back last night and they had new items on the menu. To start I had a Frittata; linguine with béchamel sauce, peas, and ham, moulded into an extra large hamburger patty size, battered and deep fried. Not the healthiest thing in the world but really nice.
Had breakfast at the bluebird cafe at cannonmills this morning. Full Scottish which also included a pancake, and the choice of an artisan roast coffee or pot of tea. Brilliant value at £8.50 and was pleasantly surprised at the quality at that price.

I had an Indian chicken wrap, shrimp bun, beef and pork soft shell tacos and the highlight of the night, a Korean chicken bun thing that was amazing. My wife reckons I went overkill on it :). Out of all the steakhouses I've been too in Edinburgh and there are many I would put that in my top five, only trumped by Steak in Picardy Place and Miller and Carter out at the old brig. Miller and Carter on Hanover Street has a LOT of work to do to get it up to scratch.

I agree. I’ve been to both as well and the Leith one is in a different league. We actually went to the Market Street one first and we were disappointed in it and didn’t understand the hype about the Chophouse. The only reason we then went to the Leith one was because we were invited for a friend’s birthday and we’re glad we went.

I go to the Festival Theatre a fair bit and usually go for lunch/early dinner first. If you want something within ten minutes’ walk then there is no shortage, in practically any direction.
Mother India as mentioned, Kalpna too, if you’re okay with Indian dishes.
There are a few really nice restaurants on the Royal Mile, either side of the Bridges. If you are going to the evening performance not all might open early enough for you, so worth checking out.
There are a number of places within a few streets of the EFT to the south-west, towards George Square and the like. There’s a bit of choice there as there are many different styles of food.
As Easty’s said above, Field is a good shout and no distance at all. The Tower at the Museum is another option if the budget isn’t a worry :greengrin
I like to try different places but every other time I go I tend to opt for La Garrigue on Jeffrey Street, halfway between the Market Street entrance to Waverley Station and the Royal Mile. It’s southern French cuisine from the Languedoc, so it’s hearty and tasty essentially. Fifteen minute walk to the EFT at a brisk pace.
If you’ve got time for a pre-theatre drink, I would recommend the Captains Bar on South College Street, just round the corner from the theatre It’s a small, small pub but very friendly and they often have a couple of folk playing live music.
I hope you enjoy The Nutcracker. Scottish Ballet are really decent and put on a great production. It’s a bit of a tradition for me to take my daughter to The Nutcracker each Christmas and we are both looking forward to it again :aok:

Tried the new burger restaurant which is operating out of Salt Horse. Really decent American/fast food style offerings, made even better with a kernel IPA to go with it.

Hopefully you should enjoy it, it's a great venue. Easily accessible, as are the bars within.
As I said before, Scottish Ballet are pretty reliable with their productions so I'm expecting it to be good!

Had an indian from that place in Musselburgh a few weeks back, the shish mahal? Opposite the Sportsman pub that Jacky Mac used to run. Excellent, 8/10, would have been 10/10 but the collection time was 90 minutes instead of 40 like they said. The garlic rice was to die for!

Went to Dante's at Colinton a few days ago and was slightly disappointed. Food wasn't bad but after reading the reviews was expecting more and not sure I would rush back , especially as its a little out of the way. Setting and service was excellent though.

Been there before. Was decent and I’d go back if someone asked but it wasn’t any better than most Italian restaurants. Wouldn’t go back off my own back because of where it is more than anything.

Haven't been there in years but been meaning to go back. It's been done-up since I was there and think it used to be under a different name?
Is it still much the same? I remember the pizzas being very nice!

I recently had a meal with the family at the Ship Inn, Elie. Seriously good pub food, quite pricey but very nice. Oddly, one small random bit of my main course, mushroom sauce, was the only down side of the whole meal. It was the consistency of dishwater and was really unpalatable.

Love it. Regularly return to Musselburgh to go there. Friends / family and I have never had a poor dish there. Would only recommend avoiding it on "Ladies" day at Musselburgh races!

Not tried for a while but the last couple of times it’s been an 1.5 hour wait so didn’t bother if 8 or more you can book a table in advance.

I’ve only been to the Edinburgh one so nothing to compare it to, but it was very good. I haven’t heard anything but very good reports from everyone else that has gone too.
As noted above though they are usually busy - best to book of you can.

Insider Information: MacDonald hotels are in crisis, chefs on the whole do not want to work for them for a many number reasons, they have senior vacancies all over the shop and have for some time. They were desperate to have a named chef take over one of their restaurants, Paul tamburriniis a good chef, but was not their first choice.
Enjoy your dinner tho, at least it's free

Don’t know about their chefs, but a relative of mine stayed in MacDonalds Cardrona recently and was disgusted to find a mattress, stained with urine, turned over and covered with a dirty old sheet. Maybe a one off eye opener but a pointer to the quality of staff they employ?

We recently tried Baba which is the new restaurant in the Principal Hotel (formerly the Roxburghe Hotel). It is the sister restaurant to the Ox and Finch in Finnieston in Glasgow which we’ve been to a few times as it’s a favourite of my wife’s family.
Although it is the same idea as Ox and Finch in terms of small plates, the style of food is very different with Baba being specifically Middle Eastern food which is straight up my street.
We were disappointed. The food itself was great with no real complaints on that front. The service was awful.
We arrived about 40 mins early to have a drink at the bar. The guy who took our order didn’t know what either cava or an old fashioned was. Fair enough the old fashioned was not on the menu but the cava was. He had to get us to explain what they both were.
Our reservation time came and went without us being shown to the table so we asked. Eventually, we were taken 25 minutes late. We ordered wine which didn’t come until after the food came. The waiter explained that items of the left of the menu came out before items on the right (which were more main course in style if not size). One of the left hand items came out. We had ordered it and a selection of dips and breads from the left hand side. The right hand side ones came out before the dips and breads when we queried it, they apologised and took what they had brought out away then came with the dips. Whilst I was at the toilet they apparently then brought a lot of food to our table, none of which was ours. They tried to blame the issue with the dips on us as we ordered it with our wine order so there were two separate tabs open on our table which doesn’t really make sense since we ordered them before the rest of the food, yet they all came after the second lot we ordered.
We were disappointed given that we have never had any issues at Ox and Finch.

Opening day pushed back 3 times by over two months due to not filling in the staff in time. Had to open before it became a farce but still desperately short in the kitchen, maybe also lacking numbers/quality out front. It's a shame as I too think ox in Glasgow is fantastic, grew up in kitchens with their two senior chefs and they are absolutely smashing it out the park over their right now. Had high hopes for baba but it's not taken off yet. The owners know what they are doing so I'm sure it will come good once the staff is there, hopefully before too much damage had been done as your issues seem to be a recurring theme for others I know who have visited.

Sad if true.I went there fairly often in the past. The Brexit immigrant thing's a bit strange given that I'd imagine any new foreign key personnel would be from India or thereabout, ie. outwith Europe in any case.

No shortage, really depends on what cuisine you fancy and what time.
I don't go to Italian restaurants generally but Ciao Roma is very friendly and hospitable.
The City Restaurant is great for kids.
If you head over in a Potterow direction there's a few other places - Field, Buffalo and Nile Valley for example, all offering different options at different prices.
If money is no object then The Tower at the museum is really nice.
If you like Indian, then you have Mother India's Cafe and Kalpna.
I've eaten in all of those prior to going to the EFT, all walking distance and can't say I was disappointed with any of them, though it's been a while for some of them. I've also gone to some of the nice restaurants around Jeffrey Street and on the Royal Mile close to the Tron but not all of them open early enough to fit in a good meal before an evening performance. Probably the friendliest place I've been to pre-theatre was Hewat's on the Causewayside, went there twice and they were fantastic. I believe it's moved to the High Street now, haven't been yet. The only place I wouldn't go back to is the cafe at the museum (not The Tower, but the actual cafe itself). The service was abysmal, despite there being no shortage of staff front-of-house.
As I'm usually there with my daughter, we tend to go to City or to Ciao Roma as that's where she prefers. Both are friendly, very handy for the theatre and relatively inexpensive.
