Absolutely correct on all counts.
Spoke with the contractor who is seeding and he more or less said what you have posted
Was it your posts about this I was reading earlier on? (Memory's going.)
IIRC once the soil around the roots is impacted, the soil can't be aerated and the surface gets waterlogged, leading to the fungal infestation?

Does anybody know if we'll be replacing the girders in the north and south stands so that they match the east and west ones? The north and south ones have the old 'Planet Saturn' Hibs badge on them?

Black root, which the ER pitch had, is indeed caused by use of a roller (amongst other things). Cricket pitches which are also rolled do not have any grass on them so your comparison is not like for like.
The outfield of a cricket pitch which is not rolled does have green grass however.
Cricket pitches do have grass on them.

Ok I'll concede that my original point was not put correctly. The gist of what I was meaning was that you cannot compare a cricket pitch to a football pitch.
Cricket pitches are mown so short and rolled so that there is virtually (see I have conceded that bit) no grass on them whereas a football pitch needs grass which is much longer, almost lush.
My main point again though was that the ER pitch problems are due to black root caused by rolling.

They made us run up them backwards at my club back in the day.

:agree: And it's a regular thing for a cricket club to dig up and relay the entire square over winter when problems have arisen.
Not to mention the fact that a cricket square isn't in use in the winter when the grass isn't growing. That gives the grass the chance to recover, and the groundsman the chance to work on the pitch to prevent the sort of problems we've encountered at ER.

Well I wouldn't say entire squares were dug up regularly however my point is that cricket squares are cored each year and "lifted" by fork after use in order to let air circulate and roots grow.
I do take the other points made however I don't think rolling the pitch need have resulted in the problems we've had, if we had maintained the pitch properly.

Sorry, what I meant was that I've heard of squares being dug up completely when there's been a problem with them, but as you say, once the season's over they're treated to avoid the sort of difficulty we've encountered.
The problem with football pitches is that unlike cricket pitches they're in use throughout the winter, so maintenance is more problematic. I'd hope that once the new pitch is established we can maintain it and look after it much more consistently than we have the last few years. I'm sure that the board are just as aware of the problem as the fans are.

It wasn't that in January when the pitch looked like a ploughed field and everyone was moaning about how difficult it was to play passing football on it.
Oh no! Nobody found fault then when this forum had thread after thread on it complaining about the pitch and wanting to know what was wrong with it.
Oh no! But now the season's over, and some of us are having an intelligent discussion about turf maintenance and fungal infections of the root-system, YOU start giving us a hard time....
Humph! :grr:

So the goals are moving 2 metres further away from the west stand.
Hmm, this will mean the goals not being central to the North and South stands will this be noticeable or is 2 metres nothing:dunno:
http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/football/New-stadium-rapidly-taking-shape.6291881.jp
the goals are not going anywhere, the pitch will be extended to keep them central.

Think it was "Doddie" that posted .
I just stopped for a "neb" and spoke with one of the guys preparing the ground for seeding .
He also spoke of problems that can arise from having a 360 degree closed stadium
This can prevent the circulation of air needed for healthy growing - i.e Murrayfield

That's what I was told...
It's why a cricket square is always worked on very thoroughly at the end of the season to restore the drainage and aeration of the turf after all the rolling it gets through the season.
The difficulty with football pitches (as I was told) is that the football pitch is much bigger and is in use throughout the winter, when the grass stops growing.
IIRC when the San Siro was rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup they encountered problems the Serie A season following because the 360 degree enclosure and the overhanging roof prevented sun and wind getting at the pitch.
I really think when the East Stand's finished, it'll provide a real sense of closeness to the pitch, but hopefully without jeopardising the quality of the playing surface. I have the impression that there's been a lot of careful planning gone into this stand - it's the culmination of a 15-year promise from STF and successive boards that ER would be rebuilt as a completely modernised stadium fit for the new century.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished job - and to us developing a team worthy of the stadium.

Someone thought it was a good idea to punch out castellations in the beams in the shape of the (then) Hibs logo.
There is not much that can be done about it other than replace each beam at huge cost. Hibs have far better things to spend money on than that.

the stand is too short, the gaps are too big, the hilll is too steep, there aren't enough entrances, its too far away from the pitch, its further away from the FF/south stands that the West, the goals wont be in the centre of the FF/south stands, the green poles are different colors halfway through construction, there isn't much space under the stand, they're building it too quickly, looks quite flimsy............:blah:

Just viewed your slideshow Supermac of the stadiums complete rebuild. Admin should put it permanently on it's homepage as a tribute to our boards endeavours since they took over. They should be rightly proud of what they've achieved.
As should you Supermac, for your fantastic pictorial history of our great club. In fact I feel so proud I may even buy that poofy away top! Hell I might even meet up with Blackpool and buy him a pint before a home game.

By the time the pitch is marked out, the end row will be right in line with the goal line, as expected and like the West stand, so all fears are unfounded.

I think some people are confused about the stand height by the fact that the steelwork itself is not as high as the other stands because it is being erected on a base which is three metres or so above the playing surface and the first four rows are then built in to this base , trust Rod to save a few bob !.

'WE ARE HIBS'
Acording to the planning permision blueprints we are to fill the north east and south east with a bloody confusing plan, it seems we are to fill either half way up to the top or from the bottom to half way up?! Think there in the 'different shades' thread.
I think there contemplating screens (like ibrox but without the seats) though thats just my opinion and guessing by the way the blueprints are.
Have a look and see what u think!
Ive also noticed that the east plans have a segragation fence marked through the middle?? For other teams games maybe? Semi's or nationals??? Strange one though.

IIRC it took mid-January to July to build the West. This one shouldn't take so long, being single-tier and no dressing-rooms, hospitality, treatment rooms, etc, and they do seem to be cracking on with it.
It's coming up to the middle of May now....
It'll be months rather than weeks, but it should be done early in the new season. Some time in August, beginning of September?
Once it's up, it still has to get a safety certificate, mind.
Well someone has given a safety certificate to the asbesto-hut so ours should not be a problem
Here's some pictures from today (http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/eagy70/East%20Reconstruction%2024%20May%202010/), the workies are still battering on with it.

I cant see the segragation in the east is for the weedgies and ****, infact, no chance, apart from there being no segragation between the seats, who in ther right mind is going to buy a season ticket knowing when we play they scruffs they have to move??? Nah.
Would put me off and i suspect plenty other hibbys would be horrified and dissapointed with that decision.
The segragation im on about is within the stand, right down the middle.
I think that its for cup semi's and national games(hence the extended run off now at the front of the west?)
Screens are not in the plans im sad to say, probably be advertising knowing the tash!

Not sure about that but when I was taking these pcs there was work being done on the pitch and the sprinkler was on at the far side. The tractor wasnt pulling a roller thats for sure but whatever machine it was it was dragging behind it was loosening up the surface.

When you look at those aerial shots it's amazing how tight the space is around Easter Road. With the new flats behind the East, the roads behind the FF and the various building behind the Main stand. Hibs have done a brilliant job ensuring we have a stadium that doesn't look as though it has been squeezed in. When completed we will have a great stadium, fit for purpose, stylish, cost effective and mot importantly, for me, in the traditional setting for a football stadium, right in amongst the local area with a buzz around the ground as opposed to these ghastly out of town stadiums so many teams seem to be opting for these days.

Thanks for the pics. I am always going to miss the old East, lots of fond memories.
That said and done, big well done to the board for getting this done, hopefully after this we can concentrate our investment on youth and 1st team squad. Which we may need to given another thread quoting the number of players out of contract end of next season.
Good of Hearts to park the team bus there to give us some perspective of size. A dropped spanner or two wouldn't do any harm to it either.

I would think that a lot will depend on whether we're at home or away for the first leg of the Europa qualifier. The pitch will be ready for that game, I reckon; whether we play it in front of three or four completed stands is the only question. I wouldn't be surprised if the stadium were ready for the Europa game.

You will either need to change the privacy settings for the album or add a load of :hnet: friends to allow us to see them

Went down today with Aubenas, first time I've been to ER since the Rangers game.
They've flung it up quickly haven't they?!
Took a few pics...once I've sorted out my Flickr account, up they shall go! Keep an eye on this space etc... :agree:

Only the 5 photos but I'll hopefully be adding to the set in the future.

From the look of the first photo it would appear that the new stand is higher than the Famous Five. :dunno:

Well done Dave...looks Brilliant from that perspective/timeframe!
least you can actually SEE our lovely stadium, over in the other side of the city their horrid pink biscuit tin of a shed is totally sealed in by crumbling old tenements....you wouldnt even know there was a "football" ground there if you werent from the area. Kind of quite bizarre really.
ER looking the dogs danglies now:agree:

That said, there is a vantage point where you can clearly see that all the stands are the same height. If you go to the John Lewis top floor café, the view of ER means that all fears about unequal heights are allayed :greengrin FACT.
