Lukaku should score there. Buffon was on him in a flash though, great goalkeeping.
Buffon, now there's a name you just have to respect.

That's how you take a chance. Belgium could learn from how clinical that was.
I said I fancied Italy pre tournament and I stand by it.
Still get 12-1 on Italy with paddy power!

Deserved Italian win. Belgium could have played all night and not scored. Lukaku anonymous. However Italy may pay layer for numerous yellow cards.

Italy's cynical fouls, that got the yellows, really annoyed me. If they'd not resorted to that, I'd be really impressed by them. Instead, I'm not! Still hopeful that France or Germany will sort them out down the line, if nobody else does first!

It's part of the game and was excellent game management.
I'd be unimpressed if an Italian side was (for whatever reason) not putting those challenges in.

I was surprised not to see Giovinco in the Italian team, being in the MLS didn't do him any favours. Seems like a correct decision by Conte so far mind you.
Whenever I see the goals from the MLS, on Sky Sports News, the defending is almost always a shambles. Standard does not look great at all.
I'm not surprised that Conte hasn't called up someone playing over there.

Great game, but some of the "professional fouls" by the Italians will come back to haunt them.
France, Italy, Germany, and England so far playing the best football. Results get you prizes though.

I really was strongly reminded of the '82 Italian side there. Play as a unit, hard as nails in defence and venomous when they strike forward.
Very unimpressed with Belgium. Lukaku reminded me of Nade tonight.
Lukaku looked like a poor man's James Collins tonight; touch of an inebriated elephant.

Pleasantly surprised but I really should know better - always, always, always dig out a performance when the chips are down or the world's against us.
That game should have finished 2-5 though, the chances...
Delighted I got 18-1 each way then 16-1 to win outright, must have a good chance now as there really isn't much between the teams this year.

There must be an argument for that Eder being sent off there IMO.

The game would be a lot more entertaining if there was a harsher punishment for it.

Very much enjoyed Italy's performance tonight. Played as a real team unlike Belgium who have the better players mostly but look like they'd never met each other.
Will be a sad day when Buffon hangs up the gloves. Absolute legend and won the lot bar the Euros. Dino Zoff won the World Cup as Italy Captain at 40 so you never know..

I am watching Mexico vs Venezuela in a Cuban Restaurant close to my home and a guy walked in with a green shirt that had O'Hurley Erin Go Bragh and a harp here and there. So naturally, considering recent events, I stopped him as he went past. The very tidy young bird that looked like his grand daughter had nothing to do with it.
He turns out to be from Troon. Had no idea about the Cup final, confessed to being a Rangers fan and had no idea if Scotland were playing in the Euros.
This is a severe case of a Scottish guy traveling to somewhere he can get laid!
I bet he has no idea who is Prime Minister Right now!!!

Individually they aren't overrated, though. They clearly have exceptional players.
Has it really been talked about years? Before 2014 they hadn't qualified for a tournament in 14 years and had a poor team.
Individually hugely over rated. Just because half of them play well in the Epl doesn't automatically make them world class or even euro class. Hazard, Fellaini, Lukaku etc incredibly over rated.

Hazard, Fellaini, Lukaku etc incredibly over rated. In contrast, Italy imho, are incredibly under rated. They have ability but are able to harness it to make a hard to beat team. Last night they had a plan, stuck to it, and got a good win. They are up there with my favourites, Germany, as likely finalists.

Said to a few people that 16 or 18/1 for Italy is a nice 'outside' bet (given everyone fancies Germany/France or a performing Spain)
Very good players, technical, quick, pass well, move well and defending always top notch.
As for Belgium, gash.

Also have an absolutely superb defence and goalie with all players decent on the ball also. The first goal was absolutely superb in the accuracy of the pass and the touch and finish. It also IMO means much more to them to play for their country.

Hazard, before last season, was one of the best players in the world. He carried Chelsea to the league title in 2015. I'd absolutely love to know who overrates Fellaini, everyone thinks he is a useless thug, if anything he is underrated. He can be a very effective player in the right system and actually has very good movement off the ball.
Lukaku is very hot and cold. His first touch is really abysmal for a player at that level but his goalscoring record is incredible for a 23-year-old. Could easily go on to be one of the best strikers in the world with the right tutor. To say he is overrated is false IMO, he has been getting it tight for months for his ego and underperformance.
Belgium undoubtedly has an incredibly talented squad, they lack a good manager and it is costing them. Conte totally outplayed Wilmots last night.

The way this has gone so far I wouldn't be at all surprised if Iceland took at least a draw from today's game. I'm the complete opposite of a Ronaldo fan so would be quite happy to see Portugal beaten.
Despite the odd grim watch I think its been cracking football so far. The lack of any dominant out and out favourites probably helps a lot.

Denis Law played a season at Torino alongside Joe Baker. I remember him telling Michael Parkinson that the first match he played Torino had a corner. The ball came in, he went up for it, and the guy marking him pulled him back down to earth by his wedding tackle.
He said it took him the rest of the first half to recover.
And did he get the penalty? What do you think?
Those were the days when men were men and centre-forwards could end up eunuchs.

Hazard was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best players in the world during 2014-15, anybody who watched Chelsea that season would agree. He had a whole season of good games, his only bad season was 15-16 in a shambolic Chelsea side. Your opinion is pretty baseless if you only watch world cups and Euros...
You can't watch much of Vertongen, De Bruyne, Courtious, Mertens, Nianggolan, Carrasco, Alderweireld either...they are much better than ''ok'' players and play for the best clubs in the world for a very good reason.

Good change that.
Too many times a ref has given a penalty for a foul and HAD to send off the defender as well for denying a goal scoring opportunity. Sometimes warranted but not always.
Bit naughty that from Carvalho!

Iceland FA and government have invested in top facilities in most towns and villages across the country. They also have a lot of qualified coaches at all age grades so kids get to play small sided games and are well coached. Clear pathway to professional leagues. It's not rocket science but the chances of it happening in Scotland with its plethora of football organisations ( seniors, juniors, amateur etc) - virtually nil

Off the pitch, I believe he is a decent sort of guy, but on the pitch he is an arrogant to**er. At the end of the match he just stood around smiling sarcastically as if the match had been all about him. I didn't see him shake hands with any of the Iceland players and, by coincidence, I am just listening to the BBC news statement saying Ronaldo has accused Iceland of small mentality. How dare they stand in the way of his progress. I laughed last night when the commentator, talking about Ronaldo getting off the team coach, said "The ego has landed."

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo hit out at Iceland's lack of ambition after the two sides drew 1-1 at Euro 2016.
The Real Madrid star also refused to shake the hands of the Iceland players after the group match in Saint-Etienne.
"I thought they'd won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end," he said.
"It was unbelievable. We tried hard to win the game and Iceland didn't try anything. This, in my opinion, shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition."
Ronaldo, making his 127th appearance for Portugal, said it had been a "lucky night" for his opponents and accused them of putting "the bus in the net".
Portugal had 72% of the possession and 26 shots on goal to Iceland's four.
Really poor from Ronaldo, I really like him as a player and think he comes across as a genuinely decent guy, but yesterday was a bit ridiculous!

Very poor could easily have scored twice, he's obviously an excellent player but he's not a very likeable person, I thought Iceland played well I expected them to defend for long spells surely he did as well, Iceland done well when they had the ball too and missed a great chance to win it in the closing stages so it could have been worse for CR7 that's what happens if u don't put teams away as we only know too well

While I can understand Ronaldo's frustration, he surely has to accept that Iceland performed to the best of their abilities - don't think you can ask any more of them than that. I enjoyed the game and Portugal had more than enough chances to put the outcome beyond doubt, the fact they didn't is partly down to Iceland's staunch defensive work, but it is also Portugal's own fault. The bad loser mentality on Ronaldo's part could well be down to him feeling that they too will not achieve anything at EM 2016??
Nice to see Austria performing to expectations too ...:faf:

I think they did play football and had a decent couple of chances themselves. Most thought at half time that Portugal would win by 2 or 3 I think the Portuguese players did also and were stunned when the equaliser went in. Actually think the ref gave Portugal the benefit of the doubt and Pepe should definitely been sent off and IMO should be banned for the next game. Carvalho's tackle early doors was probably another red, but less obvious in real time.

Most of us get a bit frustrated with teams who adopt a very defensive set up, but that's life. There's more than one way to skin a cat. The game's about scoring more goals than your opponent and if a team's emphasis is on defence, it's up to the other team to deal with it. If they can't, tough. Stop complaining and throwing the dummy out the pram. We are where we are in the Championship, very much because of this 'parking the bus' tactic, but also because we weren't good enough to deal with it. I hate to say it but Sevco and the Jambos dealt with it. We'll be up against the same thing next year but hopefully, Lennon will instil a bit of backbone and resolve in the team and we won't fall to teams scoring on the break so much.

Totally agree. It may have ben frustrating for Portugal, but it was up to them to break down the defensive system. It s worth noting that this system did not include resorting to major assault on the opposition .Free kicks 17 Portugal, 9 Iceland, almost none giving a scoring opportunity.

You can see how badly they're missing someone to link the midfield to the forwards. Hopeless in Slovakias half. The big guy up front looks a handful at times, they're getting nowhere trying to play through the middle though, so get down the lines and try to put some crosses in to the striker.

Germany and Italy both looked more impressive.

Spain and Italy for me. The Spanish performance didn't get the score line it deserved.

Good call by the ref - the player dived.
Collum has done OK IMHO
So based on what you have all seen to date, hypothetical, how would Scotland have done had they qualified? Personally I feel we would have struggled based on the last 2 games I watched.

I think we wouldve done ok. ROI and Poland both failed to beat us over 4 games and both looked ok in their opening matches.

Collum has lost the place. He was a few yards from a French trip up and waved play on. Is he playing the 'homer' ref role now?

France don't deserve that.
They did, really. If Giroud had been more accurate most of the time, and a couple of centimetres to the right that one time, the game would have been over a lot earlier. The French didn't do themselves any favours for big patches, but I don't think a victory was unfair.

Pogba in today's market is worth over £50m because he's young, quick, strong, big, athletic, has a great long range shot on him, great first touch and pass.
He literally ticks all boxes for a midfield player. Brilliant to watch at timeS for Juve

The ball just didn't fall right for France all night. Slipping at the wrong time, bad decisions etc. But they've played average twice and came out with 6 points and they have Payet on outstanding form. Amazing atmosphere from the fans as well. I wouldn't be betting against them.
Feel for Albania, deserved a point but reminded me of numerous plucky Scotland performances over the years.

A Berlin mate of mine is Hertha daft and also a good Hibby! He put me up for the Union friendly a couple of years back and he was over for the final.Know what you mean about their colours but Berlin would be a fine trip for the Hibs (wrong thread!)....
Werder Bremen would be my dream game. They've much more on common with Hibs than Hertha. I was privileged enough to live there and follow them during the reign of König Otto.

Evra just isn't very good anymore. Gets by on raw athleticism and being a bit intimidating but makes at least two radge unnecessary mistakes every time I see him play. Plus his teammates clearly hate him wherever he goes.

There was an ACDC concert held at the Vélodrome a month ago and it knackered the pitch. Didier Deschamps was going mental about it last night.
