only player I feel sorry for is Tiago Silva - he was holding then together for ages and having to sit and watch them dismantled must have been hard...the way he came onto pitch to console others says a lot about him

A lot of sportsmanship from the Brazilians, clapping the seventh, oles for the Germans team, Scolari congratulations, and Juninho saying that football was the winner.

Pass move pass move pass goal - simple really.
None of the goals were from outside the box, none were the result of someone beating 5 players then slamming it home - it was all very easy, very clinical made all easier with with worst defending since.... well since Hibs last season.

I'm in a quandary now, I always wanted Germany or Argentina to win the cup, but think that a Germany V Holland final with all the niggle will be tremendous and Brazil V Argentina will never be meaningless even in a 3rd place play off.

Any idea what price 7-1 was.

My missus told me before the game it would be 7-1 to Germany. Told her to STFU.

Not told her the winning score yet as I won't hear the end of it. Needless to say I never even looked at backing it.

Not sure, huge I'd think, I got 33/1 and 250/1 for those 2 when it was 5-0!

Yeah, my other half wanted to watch it to see if Brazil would get their ass kicked and I explained how it was going to be a close German win.

A girl on my Facebook won £500 on having 7-1 as well. Going to the ladies for future betting tips!

I'm English, and I work in the 'media', but I'm not picking up much smugness from MOTD or the BBC News just now. Pre-match, Alans Hansen and Shearer went for Brazil while Ferdinand took Germany.

I feel a little smug in that I was one of ooh, several million people, who could see that Brazil were due an absolute shafting from someone due to their being a defensive *****house, sterile in midfield, and forwards (Neymar aside) who made Hurtado look mobile.

So it's just you.

I'm not trying to say I saw the 7-1 coming but I have been saying since the start of the World Cup that this wasn't a good Brazil team and that they would be lucky to get any where near the final.

Only beat Croatia through dodgy refereeing decisions
Couldn't break down Mexico
Struggled against Chile

Their performances and style of football left a lot to be desired, I think they should think themselves lucky they got as far as they did.

Well that's one way to look at it I suppose.

The other way would be to say they deservedly beat Croatia, dodgy pen or not. Mexico are a good side and their goalie was highly praised for keeping he score at 0-0 with a great performance. They pumped Cameroon. Went on to beat a Chile side, who many were saying was one of the best teams in the World Cup, and then beat Columbia, another side getting loads of praise.

Agree with that IMO only Germany could have beaten Brazil though the nature of the result was truly stunning. Brazil lost both their best players and quite simply imploded in the first half. Brazil have loads of very good players and lets not kid ourselves otherwise look at the transfer fees and teams that their starting eleven yesterday play for. Germany were fantastic though however I personally think this result opens it up for Argentina to take the trophy as I don't think they would have beaten Brazil in their home patch but can beat Germany though obviously will need to play better than they have thus far.

So what if he pulled out the tackle? He caught the boy and took him down when he was on a run, it's a yellow card tackle most of the time.

I'm not saying he hadn't been fouled, I'm saying that's irrelevant to the tackle he made, which deserved a booking.

Brazil have been one of the dirtiest teams in the tournament. They reaped what they sowed against Columbia.

Agreed. I had been hoping Germany would put them out. I had no idea they would do the job so comprehensively.

Throughout the tournament Brazil have been taking advantage of poor refereeing. It started in the first game against Croatia and continued through the group matches. They were constantly getting away with fouling the opposition, and diving to win freekicks and get the opposition players booked. All to the background of a rapturous - some might say hysterical - home crowd.

The Spanish referee in the Colombia game failed to crack down on their nonsense right at the start. Nothing too serious, but stuff that needed dealing with. Then the Colombians decided to test him, and he failed to act against them.

And then things escalated (as they tend to do when a referee isn't doing his job) until Neymar was seriously injured by a Colombian defender. I'd take a LOT of persuading that the guy didn't hit Neymar deliberately - IMO he should have been sent off. It was an atrocious "challenge" with the ball nowhere near. But it wasn't any worse than stuff the Brazilians had been getting away with earlier on.

That's not to defend the Colombian. He should have walked. But when referees "let the play flow" as the referees in this tournament have been doing someone usually gets hurt.

And Brazil have been the main beneficiaries of the "let play flow" principle throughout, a principle which I read came down from the top - Blatter and Platini, no less. Gotta have a successful tournament. Gotta make sure the hosts go as far as they possibly can.

Brazil got exactly what they deserved last night. :applause::applause::applause:

(I'd love to be there when that Spanish ref turns up at the Camp Nou next season. Barca must be raging - and praying that the ref tonight doesn't allow one of Van Gaal's hard men to nobble Messi as well. And before anyone says it - the Dutch are well capable, as they showed in the last final against Spain.)

Had a feeling all day yesterday that Germany were going to knock Brazil out, but certainly didn't think for one moment that the scoreline was going to be 7-1 and Germany would be 5-0 up after only 30 minutes. Absolutely incredible performance and result for the Germans but absolute humiliation on their own backyard for the Brazilians.

Now then Argentina vs Holland tonight. Kind of fancy Holland to win tonight but after last night and throughout this spectacular World Cup, anything could happen.

09-07-2014, 11:33 AM
The Brazilians obviously thought they would get to the final just by wearing the Brazil kit? Well the huge home crowds, the national anthem (I thought Chile did theirs better anyway), and their reputation, coupled with their ordinary and pedestrian style of play, was good enough to get them to the semis. But there was no way that the ice cold, clinical, dream smashing Germans were going to be fooled or "star struck" and had off like all the rest, no way at all!!!

Fair play to Germany, they have done it again (but to a new level!) when it counts!

I wonder how many of the Brazil team fake injury to get out of the third/fourth place game? Would you really want to show your face again? ;)

Only the Brazilian supporters restored any honour for their country last night. At 2-0 I sent a text saying 4-1, minimum, to Germany. Then I put a bet on in-play for over 6.5 goals. Very nice. Tonight is another night to wait for the in-play after the first ten minutes I think. Though my view is that the Dutch will be tactically smarter and defensively stronger than Argentina. So a safe bet for me is Holland to win and over 1.5 goals, maybe over 2.5.

We MAY be about to see three of the most epic/weird/memorable world cup games we will ever witness. Last night was clearly the first. Brazil having to turn up and field a team to play for third place could be the second in a surreal kind of way - if it doesn't turn into a riot. And the third could be the final - if Holland make it.

The Dutch and the Germans have, shall we say, 'history'. Lots and lots and lots of history. Back at the football I think the Germans look a very complete side. The Dutch on the other hand are a decent enough team with a lot of the nasty stuff in the locker when they decide to bring it. Muller and Robben would be a very tight call as to who should play Flipper in the human version of the famous diving dolphin's story which will no doubt feature. And there's 1974 to be settled when the Dutch thrashed West Germany 1-2 in the final. And then there was the spitting....

The Germans seem to somehow manage a very large support in Brazil so they will be all over the final and their team will be a machine after last night. I think the Dutch - if they make it - may come out fighting in this one in a violent kind of way. Best of all would be the tactical engagement of two superb coaches.

I think we've been deprived of the most glorious final of all, the Brazil Argentina final that the world cup should really have produced by now. Ive got a soft spot for Argentina and id like them to lift the trophy (and it would be nice to attone for that horrible Germany Argentina final of 1990), but im tempted to root for the Dutch for the reasons you describe. It would be wonderful to have a real grudge final.

No idea at all. I tipped Argentina back at the start so I'll stick with them, but it feels like a Germany Holland final has a kind of inevitability about it. After yesterday, predicting anything seems plain daft.

Bosch are getting a bit over-rated after their freak result against Brasil. Argies were very good in the first half last night against The Oranges, then tired. If they've recovered by Sunday, they can win (Messi x2 & Higuain x1 v. Mueller x2 & red for Neuer for foul outside the box).

Its been a brilliant tournament but peculiar as well. The semi final matchups were predictable but all the big teams got lucky in various ganes; Mexico could easily have beaten Brazil and Holland and put them out, Germany looked uninspiring against Ghana, squeaked past Algeria and looked average for long spells against France, Chile lost to Brazil on pens, Costa Rica just losing out to Holland, USA unlucky against Belgium etc etc.
For me the best team were Colombia, who were bullied out of going further by a physical Brazil.

Cillesen also tried to noise up the penalty takers - harder to pull off when the first one is Messi. Good riddance.

Cillisen should have saved at least two of those.

But I love it when a cunning plan goes totally pear-shaped.

First he makes a substitution that tells the whole worldhe reckons Goalie A's much better at saving penalties than goalie B. (Not surprising considering Goalie B has never in his whole career ever saved a penalty kick.)

Then you confirm that yes, you'll probably take off goalie B and pout on goalie A in the semi if penalties look likely.

Then you use all three subs (the last one with penalties looking VERY likely indeed) without subbing the goalie, leaving goalie B to face the penalties knowing you and all his team-mates have considerably less than full confidence in him to do the job.

Goalie B tries to make like he knows what he's doing, but actually makes a complete cod of it. (Not surprising considering he's never in his whole career ever saved a penalty kick.)

Goalie A has to stand in the centre-circle watching as his chance of World Cup glory slips through the hands of his sub-standard colleague goalie B, who has never in his whole career ever saved a penalty kick. (Did I mention that before?)

Luvly.

:agree: Van Krul could have made the difference. Poor from the manager, wasting a sub earlier.

Is he VAN Krul? He's just 'Krul', isn't he?

Used to like the Dutch back in the days of Johann Cruyff and Co. This lot are a very unattractive bunch (Schneider, Robben, De Jong ...) and Van Gaal a man I hope very much will come a massive cropper in his next job.

Germany have looked vulnerable at the back against fast strikers prepared to run at them (Ghana, Algeria) and Aguerro Messi and Di Maria if fit are some of the best players in the world at doing that. Automatically assuming a Germany win because of what happened in the semis is a dangerous bet imo.

Automatically assuming a Germany win because of what happened in the semis is a dangerous bet imo.

Some fair points there, but I can't see this German team letting this opportunity slip away now - Argentina is as good as (if not better than) any team they have come up against so far, particularly in defence, but they were really disappointing going forward in the semi, I thought. Messi will need to do more than he has achieved up to now to win the cup, but he will be the one Germany have to keep under lock and key. Thought Di Maria was out of the tournament, but seems he may return for the final (?) - a great player too, if he plays that would make for a tougher game.

As you say, the German defence - under pressure - is suspect (particularly that Lamm chappie at RB IMO ), but they will surely score a goal or goals, the earlier it comes the tougher for the Argentinians. Argentina's best chance of scoring may be on the break, after soaking up the German attack - but then Neuer's playing sweeper now too, so they have to get past him, as well.

If it goes to penalties, then (assuming there is no replay) it is anyone's game I suppose ...

Some excellent points hibsbollah, but I would suggest that Germany are more dangerous as an attacking unit than Argentina, but that's just my opinion for what it's worth. Di Maria, if fit, would likely have made a difference against the Dutch, but he's been erratic to say the least. Messi, at times, looks knackered, and hasn't really looked like the player we all know he is. Aguero, just back from injury, but he looks ready to fire. I suppose I'm just not totally convinced that this Argentina team have what it takes to beat the Germans, but I could easily be wrong about that.

I think Germany looked vulnerable against Algeria and Ghana because of the very high defensive line they take at some games. Doubt they'll try it in the final, but you never know. Argentina will have to step up a gear or two though, which is always possible.

As an unrelated aside, anyone seen the video doing the rounds of Ron Vlaar's penalty? After Romero saved it, it landed in front of the six yard line with backspin and eventually creeps toward the line and ends up....
