Gordon apparently won't be in the final squad.

That would be a surprise. He’d be my backup to Gunn

I'd still recommend the fan mile for the Germany game.

Thanks again

I don’t come over until the 19th so not there for the Germany game.

Nice one, got it for less than 19 quid to cover whole time I’m there. Used PayPal as advised as wouldn’t accept my card. Apart from that all pretty straightforward and quick.

Should almost pay for itself by the time I get from airport to city centre and will definitely use again during the trip, most likely between cities using regional trains too 👍

Yeah ordered a ticket to start on the 17th. It hasn't generated the QR yet but has a countdown until it's valid so looks ok. Using the HVV Switch app on Android

Drew the short straw at work today and have to go to the England v Serbia game in Gelsenkirchen, on the plus side I also bagged the Scotland game in Stuttgart. Thought I'd managed to dodge actually having to go to the venues. Anyone going to Stuttgart should behave themselves, otherwise you might end up with me trying to get you out of the ****. Not a situation I can recommend :greengrin

It's just west of the town centre.

There's an S-Bahn station, called Hirschgarten (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hirschgarten/@48.1452491,11.5136616,15z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x479e7623f72a2bd1:0xe9debf3b 34dd6d84!2sBackstage+Kulturzentrum!8m2!3d48.145048 5!4d11.521601!16s%2Fg%2F120vzbtl!3m5!1s0x479e76212 4a6d5d3:0x2f3dcd0be9540fdd!8m2!3d48.1435021!4d11.5 202051!16s%2Fm%2F03cgsh0?entry=ttu), about a five minute walk from the venue.

Only thing it doesn’t allow is use of high speed (ICE) trains I believe

Deutschlandticket will be valid on regional and local transport - i.e. on regional trains, suburban trains, streetcars, subways and buses throughout Germany.

Of course, you can also use a Deutschlandticket to travel in the entire MVV tariff area.

The Deutschlandticket will not be valid on long-distance trains (for example, ICE, IC, EC or Flixtrain) or in 1st class.

I was considering going to Stuttgart from Cologne on day of game. If using the Deutschland ticket it would take just under 8 hours to get there with several connections. You can get there direct in 2hours 13mins on the fast train. Obviously more expensive but worth it.

Just a reminder to Scots going to Stuttgart, make backup plans how to watch the match (i.e. Laptop/VPN, book pub, etc)

With an estimated 100,000 - 200,000 Scots projected to be in Stuttgart, and there only being a 10,000 fan zone allocated to the Scotland game, it'll mean disappointment for many.

Which fan zone has been allocated for the Scotland game? According to the UEFA website Event Guide for Stuttgart:

The Public Viewing at Fan Zone Schlossplatz can accommodate up to 30,000 football fans. When the capacity limit has been reached, the “one in, one out” principle is applied – as soon as one person leaves the Fan Zone, another person is allowed in. This may lead to waiting times. There is no capacity limit at the Fan Zones Schillerplatz, Karlsplatz and Marktplatz.

We had booked a table in a pub in Frankfurt to watch the game on Friday but they have emailed today to cancel and said they are now operating as walk in only. It's a fair enough policy but a bit off they have cancelled existing bookings at short notice. I get no one wants empty tables on such a potentially lucrative night but even if there are no shows it's unlikely you won't fill the tables.

Looking online it seems a majority of places are walk ins only. Fanzone looks good but whilst the capacity of the entire area is huge the main match viewing area is only 10K and I daresay with Germany involved in the opening game that will be full to capacity not long after opening at 1pm.

Our train went through Stuttgart about an hour ago and a fair few fans got on then. I should have been in Munich already, but our train from Liege got cancelled with very little warning. Us and a load of others had to go through Aachen and then the train from Cologne was delayed. Will be out in Munich hopefully around 7.30. About an hour and a half later than hoped, but can't wait!

Guy sounds a tool.

Speaking as a former support for learning teacher, these kind of self-entitled parents used to irritate the hell out of staff. There were plenty of occasions when kids would need to be taken out of school for extended periods for justifiable and personal reasons, but these were dealt with professionally and sensitively, not bragged about.

'If the school says anything who cares?' Fine example to set.

On a par with the dads who would turn up for primary school football matches and shout all sorts of nonsense from the touchline.

Well I for one am stunned you’ve decided to comment on Scotland’s exciting trip to the euros for the first time, the day before their massive opening match, with some wee negative gripe about some laddie missing a few days of school at the end of term 😂😂😂

I think was that aye! We all ended leaving by the front exit.

I was thinking the Reichstag zone might offer better viewing opportunities than the Branderburg Gate one? Although smaller.

What time do you think would be prudent to arrive for to guarantee entry? And would there be any nearby alternatives in a worst case scenario?

Really not sure mate. Germans tend to knock off work early on a Friday and I think the place will be heaving shortly after opening time. The beer garden at Cafe am Neuen See is good and not too far from the fan mile. Nearly every bar will be showing the game so finding an alternative shouldn't be a problem.

No issue with the guy taking his son to the euros but he
is being a bit of a dick about it IMO “if the school says anything, who cares?” is pretty poor and disrespectful. I know it’s not the same context but parents disrespect for schools and teachers is one of the reasons that behaviour and respect from pupils is at an all time low in Scotland - if parents disrespect schools then their kids often will too. The guy could have just wrote a normal letter asking his kid to be excused for the last couple of weeks of term, asked if there was any work he could catch up on etc rather than posting it on social media for likes. Just my opinion. Hope they enjoy their trip and it does last a long time!

I'm with you.

There was a guy down south took his son out of school for the D Day commemorations recently. Wrote to them saying what he was doing and they came back saying that it had to be marked as unauthorised absence but they wouldn't take it any further and even said they hoped he would tell them all about it when he got back.

He went bleating to the papers about how it was a disgrace it was unauthorised absence and the trip would teach him more than any school and there were a few 'wokes' and 'snowflakes' in there too.

Most schools are pretty understanding about such things but they are bound by the law. There really is no need to be a total bellend about it.

The guy could have just wrote a normal letter asking his kid to be excused for the last couple of weeks of term, asked if there was any work he could catch up on etc rather than posting it on social media for likes. Just my opinion. Hope they enjoy their trip and it does last a long time!

He also says it's the 5th time he's done it so not exactly a one off. Anyway heading over tmrow. Few days in Berlin then down to Cologne. Can't wait.

That's it. The bragging self-entitlement is what will rile staff and parents dealing with the knock-on effect on the other kids asking why so and so was allowed to go to the Euros and they're still at school for three weeks.

Wondering also how much the boy himself will enjoy such a long trip with just his dad. I recall way back in the mists of time when we were in Belgium for the away leg of the Hibs v Anderlecht game there was a dad there who had for some unfathomable reason brought his very young son along and proceeded to drink with his mates while the boy loitered around aimlessly. We ended up getting hold of a tennis ball and playing football with him! If this Scotland-supporting dad had made it clear they were filling their time with some sort of cultural/historical tour of Germany I'd probably think that was kind of OK, but all he says is that they're 'studying' the ups and downs of being a Scotland fan. With most kids his age still in school it could be rather monotonous trip.

While I don’t have any real issue with a throwaway comment from the guy saying he’s never had and negative comment back from the school and he’s no bothered if he does now, my point was more around the resident anti-anything-Scottish troll choosing a thread full of people going to Germany to enjoy themselves and exchanging useful travel tips etc, to share these only views on Scotland at the euros.

Same poster that claims not to watch hibs games as he’s not interested in them but still manages to start relegation threads every few months. Maybe a downside of the holy ground being shut.. each to their own. He’s been at it for years and seems to still enjoy it.

Anyway, ‘Mon the Scotland.

Horrendous. Made more so by the fact the fan who was driving had a blood test taken in hospital due to the fact he was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

Aside from anyone compounding the risks by drink driving, it's always surprised me that there aren't stricter conditions attached to renting a car abroad. It's a big responsibility.

Went to get the u-bahn around half 5 at Marienplatz but was told to head to Odeonsplatz due to the square being closed. Took over a hour to get on a train to head to ground and didn’t get into ground until after 8.

It really had been ridiculous.

Trains have been crap, queues, and if you didn't go to the main square you wouldn't know that a tournament was taking place. Very little pizzazz and marketing.

Got charged 15 Euros for two waters (in cups) at the stadium, but was then told I couldn't take to the seat. But as I walk back to my seat, there are guys with trays of beers.

Went to see Springsteen last yeat at Hochenheimring, something like 80,000/90,000 there.

It's quite amazing how many Scots are just everywhere.

We watched the opening game in the Fanzone in Frankfurt and ended up in a big group of Scotland fans, maybe about 100 of us. Whilst it was obviously predominantly Germans there were similar sized pockets of Scots dotted around. We went a wander yesterday and the most commonly seen strips by a distance were Scotland. We watched the Spain v Croatia game back in the Fanzone and there were more Scotland tops than either of the teams competing. Watched Italy v Albania in some random pub and whilst it was mainly locals the only other tourists were Scotland fans.

I honestly don't think there is a better nation to host a major tournament. Germany have nailed it. Surprised to hear others have had a different experience as the massive queues and so on others have described have completely bypassed us, I suppose we have just been lucky. Every single person we have encountered has been so friendly, last night a middle aged couple out for an evening stroll and glass of wine insisted on buying us a round because we were 'their guests'. A beer in the Fanzone is €6 which seems fair, from experience of other events in Scotland we'd likely be charging around about a tenner and people would argue it was justified.

Result might not have gone our way but the trip has been brilliant so far.

Got back to Edinburgh last night around 8pm.

Flew from Edi to Cologne on Thursday morning. Train from Munich to Cologne was delayed 3 times and train ended up being half the size so had to stand for 4 and a bit hours!

Eventually got to Munich and dumped out stuff off at the hotel and headed out into Marien Platz to be in amongst the Scotland fans, which was unreal - class at atmosphere!

On the Friday we headed to the Fanzone at Olympiastadion which was amazing, place was absolutely bouncing! Main part was mostly Scotland fans to begin with then by the time Kick off came by there was probably a 60/40 split with Scots and Germans. Everyone was getting along and having a great time. Shout out to the auld boy on stage playing the Scotland songs, had the place properly rocking! Only disappointment was the game itself and the queues for a bevy were a disgrace (if you are heading to a fanzone, get down early and bring a big carry out because once its starts getting busy they will refuse cans/bottles and you will have no choice but to by drink inside. The wait in the queues were upto 2 and 3 hours, horrendous) by the time kick off game I think majority of us had all sobered up completely 😂.

Left Munich early doors Sat morning. Train to Cologne got stopped 45mins in due to a technical issue so had to get off at Nurnberg and get on abother train which went the longest way possible to Cologne! Must of took about 4.5 hours. We then got to the airport and the flight got delayed to top it all off 😂

All in all, travelling was a shambles. Not a boot in the nose off 24hrs of travelling all in!! But the day out at the Fanzone was well worth it( unforgettable experience!

If the team was as good as the fans, we would be the best on the planet 😂👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Would I go through it all again if we managed to qualify? 100%.

Cologne seem to have a fair bit in place with additional public viewings set up.

Three of us don’t have tickets and we’re still going to head down. Our plan is that if things are looking far too busy, come 4 or 5 o’clock, and we’re struggling to get in anywhere just to jump on the train back to Dusseldorf. Or even just head out of the city centre a bit and find a pub.

The fanzone in Munich was a shambles on Friday. The amount of bar areas/bar staff was woefully insufficient for the numbers of folk there, as was the lack of toilet facilities (only 1 toilet block for 25k folk as far as we could see). Took us an hour to get served beers at 1pm. We ended up bailing about 6pm and wandering back into the centre of Munich and found a table at a bar to watch the game.

We have ended up watching the Poland game today in a bar with predominantly England fans and they have been brand new. Really chatty and friendly. It is an older crowd though and mainly groups of 3 and 4 so probably not that mob mentality that can kick in when you have numbers.

None of the party songs though and the older heads seem pretty disdainful of it. It's primarily northern lads just now which I think makes a difference as well. I'm sure the atmosphere will start to change after tonight when they start to arrive en masse to Frankfurt. Thankfully we are heading up to Cologne on Tuesday so should miss it.

We are in Frankfurt watching games in Oreillys which we watched German game on Friday with a mix but predominantly Scots. Walked down past the fan zone near the river earlier was clearly much more police than the previous day where atmosphere was excellent and loads of fans mixed well. The English fans we have spoken to have been great however as you say likely atmosphere change when huge numbers arrive. We are here until Friday and going to Cologne for Swiss game but travelling back early morning. Will see how it goes Thursday.

It's an England fan recording obviously, but don't think it's English fighting. Albanians started it all apparently. I suppose some English may have been caught up in it at some point.

I'm in Gelsenkirchen now and it's not a pleasant place to be as a erm....neutral. German bombers song on a continuous loop and the first bar where Serbien fans were drinking got attacked with chairs and bottles, German police were there within seconds and a few will be waking up with sore heads tomorrow.

Took a drive out to the English fan zone and there's more people leaving than there are arriving. The plan was to separate English fans from everybody else but it looks like most will travel back into town where there is little or no place to watch the game other than in the small fan zone in the town centre. Chaos is guaranteed and it's only a matter of time before it kicks off. It could be a long night

We were in O'Reillys yesterday. Ended up in a bar that seemed to be a haunt for Eintracht casuals, it was rough as but they were very welcoming.

At the Fanzone now and it's pretty much all Belgians and Scots. Notably bigger police presence but English fans are a tiny minority and pretty quiet really.

Only trouble we have seen is a Polish guy racially abusing a guy in a kebab shop and getting a sore face for his troubles.

That has been our experience also. Vast majority hugely friendly. As you say the best country for it to be in.

You get €3 back for each cup you hand back. I got €40 back after buying a €90 round in the fan park in Munich on Friday. The round already had €30 taken off it at the start as I handed back our first round’s cups. We did order 16 beers because of the size of the queues. Got much better after the game kicked off 🤣

This in bundles. Whilst the atmosphere was pretty tense at times yesterday, the day passed without any major incidents. There were a few well known pwoper tasty boys amongst the English fans but the vast majority behaved themselves if you don't count general drunken debauchery and singing questionable songs about the heroism of the English Royal Air Force.

The Germans had set up an England fan zone well out of the way but when I went out there for the second time around 18:00, most of the fans obviously didn't fancy it because there were at least 3 times as many leaving than arriving. I was certain it would kick off last night but after a long day drinking it all just kind of fizzled out after the game.

There were a couple of incidents involving Scotland fans, one assaulted a woman by kicking her in the back and another was arrested for biting the police.

When you consider the numbers involved, I think it's gone pretty smoothly so far and hopefully that continues.

Atmosphere has been generally friendly. England fans we encountered yesterday before, during and after the game were brand new. A few obnoxious, drunk loudmouths but there have been a few of them in Scotland tops as well.

Atmosphere was definitely more tense last night but if anyone was looking for bother it was primarily Serbian fans. A lot of guys in no colours who were anything but friendly. A tram we were on kicked off and a couple of random Germans got sore faces for not a lot. Very much a minority though.

Heading up to Cologne tomorrow which I am looking forward to (not so much the 8.10am train). Frankfurt has been brilliant but being right in the heart of the action will be something else.

Have to say the Germans have let themselves down a bit with the service, had to wait an age for a beer in most pubs today and when you got a beer it was rank rotten, flat, seems they are under staffed, teams to the Dusseldorf stadium were frequent but hot, stuffy and slow as a week in the jail. We got to cologne quicker from Dusseldorf than we did the stadium. Not so advanced over here as I thought.

Absolutely hosing down now. As expected party still in full swing.

Predominantly Scots. Fair few Swiss and a handful of English and Turks. The former getting some good natured booing and responding in kind. All very friendly and jovial.

Thunderstorms forecast for parts of NRW and Rheinland-Pfalz*.

I can understand why they've closed some fanzones, TBF

* Ah refuse to use the English version, 'Rhineland-Palatinate', cos it just sounds stupid

Hi hibrandenburg, was going to go to the fanzine at brandenburg gate tomorrow, now I'm not too sure as Germany are playing beforehand. Do you think I could get in,or am I better going to my local bar to watch the game ?

I'm not sure Mark, I've been out of town since the Scotland game and have not been over to the fan zone myself. I was back at work today (just around the corner) and there was definitely less people around than the same time last Friday. I'm sure it will be mobbed for the Germany game but the crowds will likely disperse soon afterwards.

The Kulturbrauerei is a good alternative.

A country that has laws on the purity of beer is OK with me. In a old man's Turkish boozer and 3 class beers on tap and dozens of good beers in bottle, all a third cheaper than generic beer in Edin pubs. I'd have a peev problem if living here ha

Throwing it out there as someone who has generally never been ABE and have been defensive off their behaviour thus far this tournament can I say that en masse they are absolute roasters.

From Scotland fans having a party in Cologne to total idiots singing about killing their hosts grandparents in a war half a century before they were born and racially abusing Turks. Not close to a minority either, they have all but taken over Frankfurt and in the big groups they are all at it.

Was out in Frankfurt tonight and didn’t really witness that but has definitely been a change of vibe. Loads of Turks at fan park.

What’s Aachen like? We are staying there on Thursday night.

J

It’s got a typical old Germany centre , with cathedral, big square and old government building, not much after that survived the war. Couple of good traditional bars including a couple showing the games. Plenty of fast food places although not many of those traditional German. Quite a few fans around but not crowded. Good luck.

That's pretty much what it felt like in Gelsenkirchen, with the exception of a few minor scuffles it remained peaceful but there was always a tension in the air that felt like a small spark might ignite trouble. They're like the Huns in several respects and their songbook is more designed to provoke than cheer on their team or just have fun. As always, they're just one bad result away from it kicking off.

English fans were getting away with their pish during the day in Dus on Monday as everyone was happy and in good spirits but it was getting heated a number of times in the evening. If their songbook consists of Scotland get battered, 2 world wars 1 world cup, 12 German bombers then what do you expect. Why not just cheer on your own team. Hardly any of them had England gear it was all DHgate stone island. Austrians and Swiss yesterday head to toe in red, French dressed as Cockerells, us in kilts they look like extras from a crap casuals movie

It's just a bit sad as we had a great laugh with some smaller groups of English fans earlier in the week.

A boozer we were in the other night was a good mix of Scots, Germans and Slovakians. Last night there was a picture of the same pub, about a dozen guys with a union flag with 'stop the boats' on it. What a weird mentality.

The atmosphere definitely changed in Frankfurt when the England fans started arriving en masse. Big groups not wearing football colours. Bit more tension in the air. We're away now and pretty thankful for it to be honest.

Had a walk round Cologne this morning and met Marvin Bartley at the Cathedral, all the squares are rammed with Scottish people even before lunch time. I’ve taken a break as there’s no way I could last from morning to kick off.

Aside from the eejits (a minority hopefully) who sing that kind of guff a big reason Scotland dodge a high moron count in their support is because the followers of by far our biggest-supported clubs (in particular Rangers) tend not to pay much heed to the national team.
