Going back to the Leeds game, Billy, I'm trying to remember what the subs rule was at the time and why Leeds had a goalie on the bench which was very unusual then.
Not 100% sure but here is a wee article from a Leeds United perspective

It touches on their goalkeeping situation they had just sold Gary Sprake their alleged betting scam and HIBS’ protest to UEFA for Don Revie being on the pitch during penalties

    http://www.ozwhitelufc.net.au/07-11-...20v%20LUFC.htm

IIRC the sub rule for European competition was different from domestic a squad of players 17 as opposed to two named 13 at that time

Rather flies in the face of their mass protest at the Gordon goal. I smell revisionism here

They were trying to get the linesman to change his decision and allow the goal to stand 😉

At the fourth time of asking Colin Calderwood got his first victory and probably the most memorable victory of his tenure at HIBS

    St Johnstone 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Paul Wright

Hibs played their first ever match at McDiarmid Park the first new purpose built football Stadium in the UK. A near capacity crowd witnessed a tepid affair Alex Miller’s struggling side earning a 1-1 draw

HIBS’ goal was scored by Paul Wright who after being sold would come back to haunt HIBS playing for Kilmarnock and St Johnstone

    10/11/1984 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Rangers

    Callachan

A pulsating match that HIBS were unlucky not to win as Gordon Durie almost opened his account with a raking drive that struck the crossbar from a Ralph Callachan free kick

The ballboys at the Rangers end were decked out in Rangers tracksuits this was after the ballboys at the last home match versus Hearts were pelted with missiles

Jackie McNamara had to come off early as Stewart Munro appeared to accidentally stand on his right leg and was replaced by Willie Jamieson

Hibs opened the scoring on 27 minutes with a flying Ralph Callachan header from a deep Alan Sneddon cross Rangers equalised against the run of play from a suspiciously offside position through Cammy Fraser

18 minutes into the second half Brian Rice threaded through a beautiful pass for Willie Irvine to run onto and calmly slot the ball underneath the diving Girvan Lighthouse and into the Rangers net

Totally. Why would Bremner try so hard, tackling round the box and goal-line clearances. That Leeds squad were as bent a four pound note and I cant believe anything they say

The match report I have Daily Ranger said that the Leeds players surrounded the Referee and asked him to consult the linesman after he had awarded the goal

As a young HIBS fan at the time it looked a goal to me and to the HIBS players

I would like to add that I very rarely notice opposition players but Billy Bremner was absolutely outstanding that night he was definitely trying playing to win not to lose

Leeds would go out the next round

I've posted this before but I sat with (a very drunk) Billy Bremner for at least an hour in the Dean Hotel after Gordon Hunter's testimonial. We discussed the game at ER in some detail as you may imagine! Billy confirmed that in the overall scheme of things, the UEFA cup was not all that important to Leeds but he also stressed that once you're on the pitch you give your all. He also said it was like having a free pass. He could try things he would ordinarily never do, eg the backheel on the line & on that night everything came off. He was very open & honest & not at all disrespectful to Hibs.

I was only a boy, but even aged 8, I knew I’d seen an awesome performance from Bremner that night
For any much younger readers (are there any ? lol). Bremner was a veteran who’d been one of the top midfielders in England for a decade or so. He was 5ft 6 (max) and was a snarling, dirty, very talented leader of men type of player. Prone to a bevvy and misdemeanours off the field, particularly with Scotland.

Harvey McCreadie a real name from the past. The rumour at the time was that signing for Hibs got him out of jail.Stayed for a couple of months, scored a couple of goals and then went back down south.
Wow, nice one AH. I remember Harvey McCreadie scoring with a spectacular header against Motherwell, could've been '62/'63 season. It was one of my early away games, travelling through with a wee pal by train. His goal, I'm sure, was a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Peter was in the same Scottish Schoolboys team as Jimmy O'Rourke
On the back of that they were both invited down to Old Trafford for a weekendwith a view to signing for Man Utd
Put up in a top hotel ,shown around the ground and taken to the pictures with a rep from United
Their parents (no agents then) were wined and dined with of course the push to get the signatures of both players(Matt Busby had previously came to Clermiston to speak to Jimmy)

Anyway cut to the chase .
,On the morning they were due to get the train home no sign of the Lorimers.
Leeds had got word they were there and tapped Peter and slipped them away
The rest as the say is history.

As for Jimmy, a fair number of English clubs wanted his signature.
Spurs being another who sent a top man(Bill Nicholson) to Clermiston to sign him.
I kid you not when i say clubs were lining up to sign Jimmy .
Both sides of the border (bar one club!)
Celtic sent their top scout (Fallon) to the house

Faither asked him on the way back from Manchester

" Do you need more time to make your mind up ,James?

"No,Dad I want to sign for Hibs "

    The Grassmarket Affect !!!

I dont think any other players from that Scottish Schoolboys side made it pro

Possibly one or two but cant remember names
Ian Grassick maybe (Brog or Forza Fred here may recall

i might add when they left the hotel the complimentary drinks (that you pay for !)in the rooms were all gone and it wasn't Jimmy or old Mick
So Mick was on his best behaviour!!

There was an Express cutting (broadsheet sized) that hung on the wall of my old workshop for years that resounded with the headline “Hibs are the best in Britain’ says Billy Bremner”. It was from the morning after. Wish I had it now.

I've known so many people who have said that Bremner's performance that night was the best they have seen from an individual player at Easter Road. I agree, he was mercurial. It was an under strength Leeds side but it was still full of really good players and he single handedly carried them into the next round.

Oh James .....you could have played alongside Law and Best !!!!
My Dad grew up in the Grassmarket around the same time as your family
He kind of told a similar story that Jimmy could have gone to Utd but chose Hibs
    It’s a great story Mick
As my Dad said “we were all hibbys in the market, except for my daft brother “

The Dundee United result that Billy posted above on this day in 2012 put us top of the table with the exact same record as we have just now - played 13, won 7, drawn 3, lost 3.

We were 3 ahead of Celtic and Aberdeen with Celtic having 2 games in hand.

This season were 14 behind at the exact same stage with the exact same total. Shows how good Rangers have been.
