Pretty disappointed that he's only pinpointed the chances we gave up in his critique of the game, rather than our inability to create anything ourselves.
We missed a penalty. Their keeper made a brilliant save from a Vente header. Doidge missed (fluffed) an absolute sitter from a brilliant ball by Youan. And we scored.

Glad to be in the next round. Good to have visited a different club to the usual run of the mill. Good to see substitutions work…though I’d rather we’d fielded a better starting 11 to begin with.
Newell had one of his poorer games but why was he on pens? He’s hardly a prolific goal scorer and his shooting is erratic generally. Weird choice. Poor penalty. Lewy was losing it with him first half on more than one occasion as Joe was playing head down not looking for the passes Lewis was roaring at him for.
Elie …oh, man. I’m genuinely exasperated at him when he hides and shirks like he did for 75% of the time today. Gave Whittaker little protection. Like being a man down first half.
Whittaker toiled, badly outpaced in one instance second half. Megwa has to start Wednesday. It would be cruel to do anything else. However, the idiots shouting ridiculous abuse at him are a bigger embarrassment. He’s 16. Jesus.
Doidge was starved of decent service first half and I felt sorry for the big man. He worked hard. The introduction of the Double Dylan was crucial. Improved the quality of passing and movement. McKirdy ran about like a whippet. He showed more interest and energy than Youan had been.
I really don’t know what to think about the situation at the moment. Heard Montgomery on the drive home and, apart from saying “so, yeah” in every sentence it was standard fare for a boss who hasn’t many options at the moment but who also seems determined to stick to his blueprint regardless of the situation. He’s going to have to start getting results sooner rather than later though.
Not worrying about Wednesday yet. It’ll take care of itself. One way or another

I don't think anyone's being unreasonable by suggesting the first half was worthy of a good bit of managerial scrutiny and criticism. He might not want to do that in public, fair enough. Regardless, we did not remotely look like scoring from open play and that's not good enough.

Yes we are through which is all that matters I suppose but the football is so utterly boring to watch. The sideways passing reminds me of Maloney so much. I really want Monty to do well but I’m struggling to have any enthusiasm for the way the team plays. Yes we have players injured or away but I expected at least some semblance of a performance today and it didn’t happen. It was no surprise when everyone was getting so frustrated.
Enjoyed the day out today. A nice town with decent people and at least we are through to the next round of the cup.
Having said that though the display today from Hibs was woeful and completely unacceptable. We must have created a world record today for the amount of times we passed the ball sideways, across the park. Slow, eyebleeding football with most of the team looking like they couldn't be arsed. All very predictable after a jolly in Dubai.

I think they were working very hard over there but I am also disappointed that there were no fruits of it on display today. I was hoping that the players would look more confident and able to execute Montys ideas. Especially considering the level of opposition. I reckon Monty will be feeling the same.

Cheers for the read 👍 have just watched the highlights while avoiding the score, first half we looked on the ropes and I understand it wasn't our first 11.

Joe Newell is a disaster of a player
Couldn’t believe the naivety to get booked for that challenge today, dreadful penalty as well
For those who claim he’s our best player and we’re lucky to have him - that is a damning indictment of where we are as a club and squad
Offload asap and reinvest the not inconsiderable amount wage wisely (chances!) - and we will improve massively overnight
We’ll never see Joe on an open top bus !

There are numerous players to offload before Joe, the fact you’ve had a chance to post this shows how out of character it is for him.
Youan would and should have played his last game for us today if there was nobody else on the bench to play in his position instead, his attitude was honking.

I don't agree that he's a disaster of a player, or that we should offload him, but I kind of agree with your third line, the fact that he is one of our best players is a damning endictment of the team who for me are just a poor team. Yes that is important but it’s not all that matters. The trend in performances recently is worrying. Watching the game today was boring. There was no spark from anyone and that’s against a team third bottom of League 2. I am concerned and I’m usually a pretty patient supporter.

That’s not entirely true, Levitt brought spark when he came on - we created significantly more in the last half hour while he was on the pitch compared to the first hour of the match.

He took us to the league cup semi final where we were robbed.
A very fortunate win against St Mirren where Boyle got us out of jail after Montgomery did his best to throw the game with his subs. Then lost to 10 man Aberdeen in the semi. Was hardly an epic cup run. LJ won in the previous round.

They were absolutely flying at the time and any win would have been fine
What makes you think it was fortunate? Because they came back from 1-2 to make it 2-2?
We then went again and ended up winning 4-2?

Fortunate in the sense that we made, I think a triple sub (including a centre half) while 2-1 up and then absolutely fell to pieces until Boyle scored out of nowhere when they were all all over us.

My recollection of that game was we conceeded after a Whittaker error literally from his first touch after coming on 75 mins
We then went ahead again very quickly - literally 4 minutes later
Boyle scored late on to make it 4-2 with a clear 1-1 chance
He had an identical chance a few minutes earlier which the goalie saved
All that happened from 75 minutes onwards

I don’t think it’s as simple as that. He was able to run forward quickly because he was having passes played in front of him which allowed him to progress up the pitch. The first hour yesterday, passes were being played behind full backs and wingers which meant they had to go back to retrieve the ball, nullifying the forward momentum in our attacks.

But yeah, all cup games at all levels are about that. Rangers got to the UEFA Cup final and they were awful to watch, when Mourinho's Inter beat Bayern in the CL final by parking the bus for 90 mins, Awful game but I doubt the Inter fans minded.
Plus, I had the fear going into the game yesterday, partly because Hearts came so close to getting knocked out but also because they avoided it I thought 'please don't let it be us'

I meant the reason for my non attendance at Forfar was boring. It involves snow in Frankfurt, missed plane transfers and stuff like that. I think when we're up against such weak opposition we're allowed to expect a little more?
It's not entitlement or anything, but we're really scraping the barrel when we're claiming yesterday was a great result cause we're through to the next round!!
Performances have for the most part been pretty rank this season. We always seem to be offering up something as an excuse or waiting for jam tomorrow.
If we can't turn in a performance against Forfar, when can we expect to see one? This was probably our easiest game of the season and it wasn't exactly great.

Ill stick by that. A 1-0 win in the cup IS absolutely, definitely, unquestionably, a ‘great result’, because we’re through and thats all that matters. There are no points for artistic expression and there is no goal difference in cup games.
There are improvements to be made which is an ongoing process at east mains. As it stands, we’re through and we didnt get significant injuries. Happy to look forward to the **** game.

I meant the reason for my non attendance at Forfar was boring. It involves snow in Frankfurt, missed plane transfers and stuff like that. I never had any expectations about watching tikitaka in Forfar in a blustery January day, i was looking forward to having a laugh a few pints and going to a new ground for the first time.
I’m sure most were maybe expecting a bit better fare than what we saw, but ultimately there shouldn’t be too much surprise that it was a bit of a struggle on a tight plastic park in Angus.
First half bad, lucky to be level, second half better, a goal which won’t win goal of the season, game won and in the hat for todays draw.
Day out with friends, pints, bridies, big Hibs crowd, Station Park debut for most and a different environment to the norm.
As days out go, it was a very good one.

Goes without saying that winning was the most important thing yesterday so happy with that.
But it was grim viewing and I was bored as hell standing watching it.
The remainder of this season is going to be much the same. With the same players, it ain’t dramatically changing any time soon.

Ongoing process at east mains … that’s been a very long and laborious process . Look forward to seeing it come to fruition

He might have been mediocre yesterday, but in no way shape or form can he be described as mediocre at any level.
Yes he is. And that shows how far standards have dropped. He’s not that good but is our best midfielder.
A team wanting to challenge for cups and 3rd place doesn’t have any of our midfield, Newell included.

But he's right in the sense that in a cup game all that matters is going through, don't you agree?
There are only two results in a knockout cup tie, going into the next round or waiting to next year to enter again. We got through so mission accomplished yesterday but given we were nearly at full strength, and essentially were when the subs came on, it is easy to project how we played on to future games. That is what worries me. Not sure the International duty made us much worse given Boyle and Miller have been poor for weeks and there isn't much between Hanlon and Rocky. If we play like we did against Forfar then The Rangers are likely to have a field day and that is never good to watch. Different day, different pitch and hopefully a different intensity and speed of play could lead to a different viewing experience come Wednesday

Back to the game , i see Mark Mcallum was in goals for Forfar. He was the pro who led our FIFA coaching badges at the Oriam a few years back. The reason i mention it is we were all blown away by his athleticism, power and confidence in all aspects of the game. A real eye opener how good pros are when you actually play with them in a game scenario. Was an all day session and covered all aspects of goalkeeping. Nice lad as well. But seeing him flap after making an error of judgement in the highlights it would be easy to dismiss him from watching on tv as ‘oh hes at forfar, probably a part timer and an electrical engineer or something as a day job’. Actually these teams have class players by most standards who must be respected.

Even when you look at junior level there are some decent players. Last season Bobby Linn was playing in the Championship, he’s now in the EoS league with Lochee United. When Darvel beat Aberdeen, they had Ian McShane who won the league cup with Ross County not so long ago.
I used to work for a company that had a senior member of a highland league club as a director, and you’d see ex professionals either at the end of their career or players in their mid twenties dropping out of full time football around the office from time to time. The idea being come and play at a lower level, and also have a full time job so if you drop out of the game altogether you’ve got a safety net for supporting your family.
Not uncommon at that level seemingly and probably quite an appealing option if you still think you’ve got a year or two left in you as a footballer but don’t know what happens after that.

Absolutely. I’ve always said that when people slaughter lower league teams, the players at that level are absolutely exceptional football players compared to your average player at amateur or even the guy you play 5s with who you think is really good.
The guys that are cutting about in League 2 or even the Lowland League will likely be in the top 0.5% of players you’ve ever played with or against for the vast majority of people unless you played pro youth.

I think there's a difference between 'an acceptable result' and 'a great result'.
Scraping through to the next round against Forfar, when 3,000 of us took the time to go up there and back the team, hardly comes under the second category.

Probably just depends how you want to spin it.
It’s a great result, because the result is you either win, lose or draw. So it’s the absolute maximum you can achieve.
I think most folk when they’re talking about results though are also considering scores and performances (which are different from a result). In that respect, it’s far from a great score and performance.

Good point. Unbelievable that this was allowed to happen. The Borders were cut off for 40 years and stations removed from large towns such as St. Andrew’s. The crazy decision had a massive impact and probably started the decline of railways throughout the country.

There was a bit of corruption around it, and a lot of 'pressure' from the car lobby on politicians. They also fudged numbers to make lines which were performing well, or not being utilised to their fullest potential, and make them seem like they were lost causes. They also didn't take into the social aspect about cutting off communities.

Would have been class to still have the station, especially as I live in the west of the city.
But they don't even increase services for big games and events in Scotland anymore, no more football specials.
