I’m sure it’s been brought up before but I’ve not been following the thread, but why is there not a deadline for postal votes so they can be counted on election night like they are here? Seems mad that there’s such a delay in the results coming in because of it.
Quite a number of states have laws saying a postal vote with a post mark up to and including the Election Day are legal votes. So they are effectively still receiving postal votes after the election.
Then some have laws that say they can’t count postals until after the day itself (I assume so no news leaks on who is winning or losing on those votes)
It’s always been this way in many of the states....the Trump whining about it like it’s something special just for him is just pathetic.
But hey no one expected anything more from him and he certainly hasn’t disappointed on that front.

Two things ..many states have a deadline on the day of the election ..secondly a number of states don’t count the mail votes until after the election day - Some because they were compelled to delay due to court cases by trump & co.

In Pennsylvania Republicans refused to allow counting of the postal votes until after election day. A cynic might say it was part of a Republican plot for Trump to build up a lead from election day votes (mostly Republican) and then cry foul when his lead disappeared with the postal votes (mostly Democratic).
That’s exactly what happened.

They also have a lot more security measures in place than we do. Each ballot involve opening three envelopes and checking of signatures. It just takes a lot of time.

I’ve opened the postal votes here before and ours are pretty secure. There’s 2 envelopes, and they’re all ran through a machine which checks the numbers to confirm they’re genuine.

Pennsylvania was David Gray scoring the winner well into injury time.

Bannon is a total wrong un. Not sure why he’s so chirpy when he’s facing years in jail
for fraud. No doubt waiting on his Trump pardon. Horrible tw*t.
his lawyers asked the judge yesterday to postpone a hearing on monday as they've quit representing him after his calling for the beheadings :greengrin

Yes, a lot. Here is small bit of it, mainly to do with the figures
.https://theredelephants.com/there-is-undeniable-mathematical-evidence-the-election-is-being-stolen/
That isn't evidence of anything. It's supposition and supposition which doesn't make much sense considering what we know about voting in this election so far.

They are liking and sharing every last thing on Facebook that goes along with the “election was rigged” narrative.
It still has a lot of backing amongst his base support, as preposterous as it is.

I’m fascinated by how Rudy Giuliani ended up doing his press conference at Four Seasons landscaping in Philadelphia. Between a porn shop and a crematorium. Were they sent by mistake? Was Armando Ianucci involved? Are they mocking themselves?
The idea that this gang could possibly mount a multi state legal challenge against the count is ridiculous.

I get the feeling that what the last five or so years will be remembered for through both Brexit and Trump is that we tried to break the established order of running things, then learned some harsh lessons about doing so. Both Bannon and Cummings wanted to paint the EU/Obama as corrupt and not suitable for present purpose but as soon as they were forced to show their methods of runnings things it became clear that the alternative is much worse and that other than tearing things down they had no idea how to build them back up in their vision, leaving just a pile of smoke and rubble around us.
If we learn the lessons properly (and I don't for a second think we will) then the likes of Trump, Johnson etc. should be unelectable for a generation.

Unfortunately, even if they do divorce, I'd imagine there will be terms in their prenup which prevent Melania from speaking out against him. I read that he had similar legal terms with his last wife.

A part of the reason is that the US takes voting very, very seriously. In some cases if a ballot has arrived with a flaw - wrongly dated by the filler-inner, for example - the state posts the ballot back out, giving the voter a chance to repair the error, and waits for it to come in a second time. That's pretty thorough, and unimaginable in the UK.

I can't for the life of me understand why but that tweet must have been purely for a reaction. Surely no one is stupid enough not to realise that was grossly inappropriate and was going to provoke an angry response. If he can use Twitter it surely wasn't beyond him to Google the VP elects name and use it.

It appears that he said it in a tongue in cheek manner, later alluding to the potentiality of transitioning to a new president. How he thought it appropriate to make this kind of comment given the context is unfathomable. The very fact that the Sec of State won't recognise the result of a clear election victory is bad enough, but this serves to further twist the knife. What a ****bag.

It’s not as bad as the headline. The poll is among registered voters. RVs can register as gop, dem or independent. The number of gop is about a third of the sample, so the gop distrust is about a quarter of the electorate.
Although as it turns out, it’s not just gop lack of trust. Totals are trust 57%, distrust 40% DK 4%

Possibly more nuanced than that. This time round Republicans are saying the bottom part of the ballot was fair and the top half unfair.

The issue for me is that Trump sowed the seeds of this months ago. He was well aware that the Dems would have a large vote in % so set out to discredit that. As the election was taking place he ramped up the rhetoric about it and I have no doubt it was based on what his analysts and strategists were telling him was happening was that he was about to lose. The man is a megalomaniac and simply cannot understand that he could have been beaten.
No evidence has been presented of widescale voter fraud, in fact I think all I have seen is some minor issues with a republican who was trying to vote in behalf of his dead wife

Although I am someone that the Nationalists would declare to be a Unionist, thats not how I see myself. I do believe that Scotlands future is best served by remaining in the Union. I also believe that if we choose to become an Independent Nation, it would be a big mistake under which we are all worse off, despite the best of intentions. Voting for Independence comes from the heart rather than the head

I totally understand that's your opinion but, in my experience, that sort of patronising statement does nothing to sway those who are undecided.
It just echoes those who think anyone contemplating independence is too stupid to see past any emotional argument.

As someone that the unionists would declare to be nationalist, that's not how I see myself, I find your assertion that anyone who wants to see Scotland as a normal country is not capable of looking at it other than as some sort of misty eyed romantic idea is quite patronising and insulting.

In 2015, before becoming president, Trump was asked if there should be a second Scottish independence referendum He said: “I don’t know how they can do that – go through all that again. I’ve never heard of a thing like that. It’s crazy.”
He added: “I didn’t want to get involved in it, but people asked me and I think Scotland is better being unified as opposed to being independent.”
Two years later Trump said that Scottish independence would be “terrible”, citing fears over the future of the Open golf championship.
He doubted whether there should be a new vote in Scotland, saying: "They just went through hell."
The president noted “they’d no longer have the British Open”, adding: "Scotland. Keep it in Scotland."

You’re right, hes been behaving like this for 4 years and has been saying he might not accept the results for at least a year, so we shouldn’t be shocked. I do remember being told that his bark would be worse than his bite and he’d grudgingly have to accept reality in the end.
What IS unexpected is the almost total lack of criticism of Trump from other Republicans. We had Romney last week breaking ranks, that’s been all. The GOP has lost any kind of moral compass. And this is with a president elect on the Democratic side that has made a career out of befriending Republicans and doing senate deals! It’s not like you have a radical liberal takeover going on. I expected to have heard a lot more from moderate, centrist Republicans, but maybe they just don’t exist anymore or never really did.

The media needs to move to what Biden is trying to do but can't, rather than what Trump is doing. He wants to put in practise the handover transition team so they're ready to go from day one but can't and if he can't get the support then it could cost a quarter of a million lives.
They need to say what Biden is doing, why that will help the country and leave what Trump is doing to a minimum but making it clear that it is indeed Trump who is stopping that.

If he is fighting a protracted legal case in say 2022, there’s no way he can run for Primaries or run a Presidential campaign.
Not saying that prosecutors should look at that, if they can get a conviction, push the button straight away.

Regardless of any political consideration, the longer he draws out his dispute the more money "for the fight" he raises from his supporters, the majority of whom are too stupid to know/care that the bulk of the cash raised is going straight to Trump rather than to the legal challenge.

TBH I have thought the same for a long time. If you look up the character traits of a psychopath then there are very few that don't immediately apply to him. Probably inherited it from his father who appears to be have had similar traits.
He is a serial loser. Loser in personal relationships, business (multiple bankrupcies), fined for fraudulant use of funds from his charitable foundation. And what is his worst crime of all - a cheat at golf. And now a losing Presidential candidate.

I’ve known someone for many years who has formally undiagnosed NPD (narcissistic personality disorder). A very difficult individual who has many good points but has behaviours that you can only explain on a clinical level. When I watch and listen to Trump I see so many parallels with my acquaintance it’s clear to me that he has it too. He’s often called a narcissist as a throwaway insult but there’s an obvious truth there. It’s a really interesting condition when you look into it; it’s also one of the hardest conditions to treat because by its nature the patient doesn’t often accept the reality of their diagnosis and walks away from treatment. I’d be interested to hear from Nottingham Stu if he has any experience of this.

I'm not a psychologist, but personality disorders of all types are, so I've read, basically impossible to treat. It isn't a mental illness but an inbuilt disposition. Those who are psychopathic/narcissistic/antisocial etc cannot be medicated or talked out of their condition in the way those with a clinical mental illness often can. Rather, at its most extreme, the genetic malfunction is reinforced by negative environment in childhood, and thus, when there is a toxic mixture of nature and nurture malfunctions it can be catastrophic. At the most extreme level this manifests itself in the serial killer or violent offender. Those whose genetic predisposition has been moderated by positive nurture in childhood often become the functioning maladjusted, and thus we get the psychopaths in politics, business, academia, meaning those whose pathology doesn't stray into criminal violence but is still toxic for those who encounter them. Such people often get to the top via ruthless disregard of the value of others.

I see the clown is going to execute as many as he can before he buggers off in his strop.

Usually (in the last 130 years) the sitting president pauses federal executions during the transition period, but Trump is going for it and forcing a few through. It's just pure evil using people's lives like this.
When you see cases like the above being forced through you just despair that a so called civilised country still has the death penalty.

He sounded like a man who got in with some bad characters when young, was not the main instigator of the terrible crime and was remorseful throughout his incarceration and a model prisoner. Even if you agree with capital punishment this one stands out as being wrong.

Trump is just grandstanding but I'm struggling to have much sympathy for someone that wilfully took part in an armed robbery in which two innocent people died. Apparently he set light to the car and it was later found that one of the people in it was actually still alive at that point.

While not disagreeing with you, mistakes can be made or the prosecution can hide evidence that weakens their case. That leads to innocent people being jailed and only cleared later through advances in science or new evidence. If the person convicted is dead it's too late, so life sentences are better.
Having said that, I would rather die than spend life locked up; especially in an American prison.

I grew up looking east towards the old USSR and wondering how long it would take for the population to wake up and see through the spoon fed bull**** diet of propaganda sold to them by the state. I now look west.

Texas case refused by the SCOTUS. Texas told they can't tell other states how to run their elections.

Does everything over there have to be assigned a name ending in OTUS?
Maybe we should start doing the same kind of thing and referring to Bojo as PMOTUK. His Missus would be FLOTUK

:agree: the acronym thing has gone tonto. Plus SCOTUS has a ring of ‘scrotum’ about it.

Apparently Maryland has said they did all of the things that Texas accused other states of doing. Difference there was that Trump won so no court case threatened
