Asking staff to walk miles to work for me is wrong. Surely they should send out taxis to pick folk up?
Then if it is good enough for taxis to get about, its good enough for everybody to drive!?

My work sent a text saying make your own decision.
Based on the conditions and the fact I likr walking in the snow I decided to go in. I've not walked anywhere so far where the snow is much more than about 12-15cm, maybe slightly higher where it's drifted. I walk to work at least twice a week anyway so it's no big deal really. It's the people outside the city who I feel sorry for.
That’s alright they gave you the choice PB seems sensible while other companies seem to care about profit than the safety of the staff. I’ve just text my mate who works centre of town he’s waiting on them calling him to see if his office is open. His manager said if it is you better be in and you can walk it and leave 2 hours early than usual.

I do find Facebook quite enlightening at times like this.
Girl I knkw sharing stories about the red warning and going on about staying indoors, not risking work, safety first and so on then 2 minutes later posting a picture of a sled with 'ready for today with the kids'. So it's unsafe for a healthy, adult female to walk to work but it is safe to walk 3 kids under 7 to a big hill and push them down it on a piece of plastic. That's logic. It appears the risk to life only counts until it gets in the way of something fun.

That's a wee bit unfair. I'd imagine the sledging will be maybe 5-10 minutes from her house, therefore easy to get home quickly should the weather become worse - not the same thing at all as a few mile walk.

I guess you're right but the whole point of the red alert being flagged about a half day or so in advance was to ensure they could be home before it all went pear shaped.... Unfortunately folks didn't follow/believe it so ended up travelling too late when the red alert was actually in force.

Can't help but feel this red warning is a big pass the buck by the powers that be. The fact is the government don't have enough resources to deal with the snow once again.. So they'll just wait for the red warning, don't go anywhere.. So if anything happens it's your fault now.

Was speaking to two Norwegian offshore workers y’day in Aberdeen ... they find it incredible we try to drive without winter tyres! In Norway, a set of winter tyres comes with each new car. Sure, they get more snow over there and it would be expensive for us to buy a set we’d hardly use but surely we are just asking for trouble if we try to drive on snow without proper tyres.

It's compulsory to switch to snow tyres from around November - April in Norway IIRC. There the snow is much more reliable than in Scotland - we would have many years where we wouldn't need them.

Winter tyres have less grip once the weather warms up, will wear out more quickly and the car will use more fuel.

Winter, not snow, tyres are more effective than standard tyres at temperatures less than +7°.
A quick Google search suggests average temperatures, even in Edinburgh, are below that for a good few months every year.

The weather in the UK over the last few days has been exceptional.
There would be no justification for local authorities gearing up to deal with events such as this because they only happen every few years.
The last time I remember snow like this was in 2010.
Most of the time, winter passes with little or no incident, and often if anything does happen, it's as much the fault of the commuters who don't use their common sense.
It's easy to sit back, nod sagely and blame the authorities.

Winter tyres have a much softer rubber that doesn't turn brick hard in temperatures less than 7 degrees like summer tyres do and therefore offer much better grip to the road. Because of the softer rubber they will wear down much quicker in warmer temperatures. Using summer tyres at extremely low temperatures is a bit like driving with hard plastic wheels, ok for driving straight on on a flat surface but useless when braking, accelerating, or driving up or down hills.

I'd say it was proportionate and I don't see the point in investing millions of pounds in equipment that will lie dormant for several years until we have another event like we did in 2010 or over the last 48hrs.
The problem is that we, the population, just ignore warnings and expect streets/roads to be cleared almost as soon as the snow falls.

For Scotland's climate, I'd agree that considering an alternative to standard summer tyres makes sense.
After 2010, I ended with winter tyres because snowchains make a hell of a racket. Recently I got bored of swapping wheels for the summer and - after some research - went with all-season tyres until now - have done the job. Not as soft as winters, but up to the job and maintain great grip in the wet.
Ironically, there's too much snow right now to even move the car so I can't drive :)
Potentially a little noisier (a tendancy to sawtooth apparently) but at 65 quid a pop fitted, they (Sailun Attrezza Z4+AS, which I read are fitted at the factory on Canadian Toyotas if you are interested) have been superb. Apollo Alnac 4G (part of Vredstein now) are also a great budget all-season tyre.

The last time I remember snow like this was in 2010.
I don't actually remember snow as deep as that which greeted me when I opened the front door in Leith this morning back in 2010. Granted, I remember a far more sustained period of disruption, but I cannot recall in my 37 years snow accumulations to this level.

I've not done a cost benefit analysis or anything, but I wonder what the trade off would be between a bit of capital investment every few years and the loss to the economy of having thousands of workers sitting at home/on sledges/stuck overnight on the M8 etc.
And apart from any massive investment, there was someone on here saying a mate had dislocated a knee slipping on uniced pavements after a recent home game. It's surely not beyond the wit of man for there to be enough salt and grit to service at least the main urban areas and (let's dare to dream here) the major routes between them??

For the company car we get our winter tyres changed at a local garage who also store the tyres. For our own car I keep a set in the garage and change them myself around October and back in April, takes about half an hour. Went skiing in the Alps earlier this year and there was a hu*****us amount of snow but due to the winter tyres we had no problem getting up the mountain and didn't need to even fit snow chains. In my opinion it should be compulsory once the temperatures drop constantly below 10 degrees, like it's already been mentioned, winter tyres are not only for snow.
All year tyres are a compromise, whilst they are a definite improvement on just summer tyres, like all compromises they have their limitations.

Winter, not snow, tyres are more effective than standard tyres at temperatures less than +7°.
A quick Google search suggests average temperatures, even in Edinburgh, are below that for a good few months every year.
I had a set of Michelin Cross Climate tyres on my old car before it died. They were as good as good summer tyres in summer and not far off as good as winter tyres in snow. Going to get another set for my current car when it needs new ones.

Why are you not listening? There is no one to blame.
Were you in the UK in 2010.
If you were, you'll remember how severe the snow was and how impossible it was for the local authorities to deal with.
This week's weather merited a red alert. Even 2010 didn't.

Salt and grit won't work effectively under a certain temperature (canny mind what it is) and also need footfall in pavements, wheels on the road, to work at all.
And of course if there is too much snow it wont work either.

Can't help but feel this red warning is a big pass the buck by the powers that be. The fact is the government don't have enough resources to deal with the snow once again.. So they'll just wait for the red warning, don't go anywhere.. So if anything happens it's your fault now.As opposed to not sending out warnings you mean? Fewer cars on the road the better. More space for emergency vehicles and staff trying to get to hospitals etc.

It’s a shame a cheaper alternative that you can fit to your regular tyres couldn’t be made available. I had to walk a few miles today so put on my work boots with chunky soles. No way would I try walking in gear I wear in the summer so it also makes sense to have car tyres that match the weather.

I am off work due to firstly not being able to make it through to Glasgow and secondly because the whole place is shut down for the rest of the week.
With no buses running I decided to trek into Bruntsfield for essential supplies and found Sainsbury’s was closed. Fortunately I was headed for Oddbins to stock up on wine and they were open.

I walked home from work and Easter Road, London Road, Duddingston Road, Milton Road and Newcraighall Road had all been gritted. I think they are trying to get the main thoroughfares clear to get at least a few buses back on tomorrow.
The hours of snow, low temperatures and minimal traffic might have seen them quickly covered again though.

Problem this morning wasn't the number of drivers but the state of some of the roads. I'm guessing here but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of limited service from the 6am slot mentioned on the LB website.

We got asked to try and make it into work today, it's a 3 mile walk so I thought let's give it a bash, when I was more than halfway there I got a call from the work saying they hadn't heard from me, aye I'm walking through a blizzard and didn't hear my phone, anyways basically got told I was mental for even trying, but couldn't be arsed getting into an argument about the lack of leadership that left it in our hands for it to be brought up at a later date, ended up going in and regretting every moment, everyone else scored a day off and I ended up trying to cover for 20 people.
I did see some great things on my journey though, two unrelated people on cross country skis, a guy trying to clear the tram tracks with what looked like a heated leaf blower, a van just left right in the middle of the road and a snowman that I'm sure was flashing a YLT

Make sure you’re not shy in asking for at least a half day as pay back for today’s effort.
They may say no but at least it will reaffirm the effort you went to to make it in.

Folk who stay close to the work place often get slated yet if it’s dangerous it doesn’t matter if you live 100m or 5 miles you could be wiped out by a car. Going in when you really shouldn’t or don’t have to doesn’t get any medals either. If it was a bloke, I suspect they'd be saying it was a skillful piece of driving and never mention the speed.
TBF i thought the mini(?) driver was an idiot, pulling across the road like that. Its easy to see how bad the visibility was.
The flipside is that 5-10mph was probably applicable for those conditions, but if the bus has just come up a hill, it'll have been doing more.

Out in West Lothian I think it is worse in terms of the amount of snow. I have a foot of snow at my front door, though obviously it lasted a lot longer back in 2010.
I think the problem back in 2010 Dave was it was so cold, temperatures were about -16 and that wasn't wind chill, so the snow stayed around for ages. This time we have a strong wind which is causing bigger drifts. As long as it's clear for next Friday so we can get to the pub for a few beers before the Hertz game. 😉

We’re a bit worried about the snow melting actually. Our living room has a bay window which has a flat roof which acts as a sort of balcony at our bedroom upstairs (you wouldn’t really go out on it though - you would have to climb through our window). There is a **** tonne of snow on the roof of the window. It reaches the bottom of the bedroom window and goes past the midway point of the balcony railing. We’re a bit worried about getting a leak when it melts due to the weight and volume of the amount of snow. We can’t really see a way of getting rid of it safely before it melts.
Amazing skill though - what the hell the car was doing I'll never know.

I'm sure this was discussed on another thread recently.
Most vehicles have lights that are on all the time. Some drivers, not just van drivers, don't realise it's just the front lights that are always on.

It’s a shame a cheaper alternative that you can fit to your regular tyres couldn’t be made available. I had to walk a few miles today so put on my work boots with chunky soles. No way would I try walking in gear I wear in the summer so it also makes sense to have car tyres that match the weather.
I got snow socks back in 2010 and they're brilliant - you wouldn't want to drive too far with them but getting out to a main road is a piece of cake and they're really easy to fit.

I’m lead to believe that it’s pointless gritting when there’s no traffic on the roads. Buses are off again this morning, do I risk driving or walk??? Think it may be icier this morning than it was yesterday.

The fresh snow wil probably offer some protection from ice for now for walking. I wouldn't drive.
My instinct this morning when my alarm went off was to say '**** it' and go back to sleep but I'm up and going to attempt what looks like being a pretty unpleasant walk. If it's too bad I'll turn back.

Decent walking conditions today. Noticeably milder for starters. Wind has blown a lot of the fresh snow away to the side so walking is on compacted snow with just a light powder dusting on top. As far as walking on snow goes it's about best case scenario.
Only downside, for me, is there are loads more cars on the roads than yesterday already, most of the main drags I have passed have either been gritted or there are snowploughs and gritters out working.

All three exits from the village still waist high with drifting snow. I’m glad I rationed the bread and milk.

Anyone know if M&S at Fort Kinnaird is open? I might have to have a magnum and a 4 year old muffin from the back of the freezer for my lunch, if not. I’m almost out of alcohol too - that’s the real humanitarian crisis in waiting.

2 folk from Fife made it in so far. Woman a mile away is 'going to have to stay in sadly' again.

Still pretty horrendous in Falkirk. Wind's really strong just now, woke up several times because of it.

I’m technically unemployed at the moment, it’s a great time not to be working.

I'm bored of cabin fever already, the weekend looks like more snow right through. If it doesn't clear up soon I'm going to have to resort to spring cleaning.
