Five years ago today we won 3-1 against Hearts in the Scottish Cup replay:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/38977353

Everything about this game (bar the scruffy penalty rebound from Goncalves) was dream like. Played them off the park that night, still get chills remembering the roar when we scored our 3rd goal.

Being cup holders, putting them out the cup for the 2nd year running, Jason's Cup lifting celebration, Holt's roly-poly celebration, taunting the laptop manager Cathro, sending their season into a nosedive, the catalyst to allow us to finally storm away with the Championship.... just an all round memorable game for many reasons!

it was a superb night. Thought a proper pumpin (like a 6-2) was in the air when the third went in. The hunger of our team was something to behold. If you watch the highlights, nearly every chance we had came after McGinn snapping into challenges and hunting their team down.

and of course the half time scenes in the concourse!

    26/2/2011 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Inverness CT

    Booth 58
    Stevenson 89

Hibs claimed their fourth successive SPL win with this 2-0 victory over Inverness CT

The talk after the game was all about the performance of young Calum Booth who put in a performance that belied his years and had many comparing him to John Brownlie

Indeed Booth gave HIBS the lead just short of the hour when he collected a Derek Riordan pass outside the box and lifted the ball beyond Esson and into his top far corner

Booth was then called into action at the other end of the park when he headered away a goalbound Inverness effort from underneath his own crossbar

Lewis Stevenson on as a 77th minute substitute for Liam Miller scored one minute from the end when he curled a deflected effort past Esson to seal all three points

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Motherwell

    Irvine

This game played in driving rain Andy Harrow scored his first goal for Motherwell since signing from Aberdeen with a looping header over Roughie

Ally Mauchlin of Motherwell was sent off for getting involved in one argument too many with Turnbull and Conroy

Willie Irvine #1 scored his first goal for HIBS since signing from Motherwell when he met a freekick in the box from Brian ‘Chipper’ Rice and headed the ball just inside Nicky Walker’s left hand post

    26/2/1977 Scottish Cup Round 4

    Arbroath 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Blackley

Arbroath took the lead through Tommy Yule and then made it tough for HIBS to break them down

The equaliser came when Erich Schaedler took a short corner from Arthur Duncan this seemed to take the Arbroath defence by surprise Shades swung the ball in and the unlikely figure of John Blackley was there to bury the ball past Gordon Marshall

    Morton 2 v 3 Hibernian

A cracking game at Cappielow played in atrocious weather conditions in a driving gale and on a bog of a pitch

Gordon Smith gave HIBS an early lead but Davie Shaw got stretchered off injured on the half hour leaving HIBS down to ten men Farquhar made it 1-1 going into the break

Into the second half and Turnbull was awesome playing in two positions covering for Shaw. Lawrie Reilly hit a double and HIBS thought they were on easy street when they were awarded a penalty Jimmy Cairns stepped up and missed the penalty but the action was not finished as Neil Orr’s Dad Tommy scored for Morton in the 86th minute leaving HIBS hanging on and fighting for dear life

    26/2/1910 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hearts 0 v 1 Hibernian

    Peggie

This Match was replayed when Hearts who had been leading 1-0 at the Holy Ground had the rug pulled from under them when the match was abandoned due to several good humoured pitch invasions The Referee had had enough and decided to call it a day

The replay took place at Tynecastle one week later and Hearts were supremely confident going into the game

The Hibernians had the better of the play throughout the game and scored the only goal early in the second half through Nesbit Peggie

Hearts did exert some pressure after the HIBS’ goal but this soon passed and HIBS went on to monopolise play and never looked threatened at any time

49000 turned up to take the total attendance for this tie to well over 100000

Duncan gave HIBS the lead in a rough match Tommy McLean equalised and in the dying embers of this game with extra time looking likely the Referee controversially awarded Rangers a late penalty which Tommy McLean duly scored

HIBS totally dominated this game but could only take one of the many chances they created whereas Rangers only needed two

Pretty sure their penalty was highly dodgy IIRC

Significant by his absence was Jimmy O’Rourke who appeared to have fallen out of the Manager’s favour

    1/3/1958 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hearts 3 v 4 Hibernian

    Joe Baker 4

Hibs arrived at Tynecastle to face red hot favourites high flying Hearts -who would win the title - in front of a crowd of 41666 without talismanic centre forward Lawrie Reilly who was still recovering from a cartilage operation

HIBS Manager Hugh Shaw decided to go with the young inexperienced 17 year old Joe Baker who was not without promise having already scored in a win against Hearts to christen their floodlights a double against Queens Park, a goal in the previous round versus Dundee United and a hat-trick against Spurs

Anyway the game kicked off amid great anticipation Joe Baker missed a golden opportunity in the first few seconds. Hearts scored against the run of play after 10 minutes when a shot by Hamilton trickled over the line. Baker equalised less than one minute later when a shot from Ormond came crashing down off the underside of the crossbar HIBS were now in total dominance and in a shrewd move by Hugh Shaw before the game he had moved the strapping full back John Grant into midfield to counter the menace offered by Dave Mackay

Joe Baker thrived in the space created in the hole by Grant and he ran his marker Jimmy Milne ragged twice scoring with tremendous drives from outside the box after leaving Hearts defenders trailing in his wake blasting the ball past Gordon Marshall to put HIBS 1-3 up

Veteran Hearts midfielder Jimmy Wardhaugh pulled one back but Baker scored again when he hammered home a pass from John Fraser

Hibs led 4-2 with one minute to go - Hearts put HIBS under severe pressure and Murray pulled a goal back and still they came forward searching for an equaliser but Lawrie Leslie in the HIBS goal held firm and repelled all further Hearts attacks being carried from the field of play shoulder high by jubilant HIBS fans at the final whistle

HIBS would reach the final in this season defeating Rangers in the Semi Final after a replay

    3/3/2013 Scottish Cup Quarter Final

    Kilmarnock 2 v 4 Hibernian

    Griffiths 15 82 89 pen
    Done 39

A large vociferous HIBS support made their way through to Ayrshire for this televised classic Scottish Cup tie that would feature a virtuoso performance from Leigh Griffiths in which he would score his first hat-trick for the club

Killie had the better of the early openings but Griffiths opened the scoring when he latched onto a long ball from David Wotherspoon to fire home under the diving Cammy Bell

Killie equalised when Ben Williams parried a long range effort from Gros and James Dayton did not have to be asked twice

Just before half-time a mix up between Bell and Sissoko left the ball bouncing at the feet of Matt Done and he made no mistake from close range

Into the second half and Williams pulled off a great save from Dayton only for the Referee to pull play back awarding a penalty indicating that Lewis Stevenson had pulled Paul Heffernan back in the box as he went for the rebound -2-2

Griffiths then scored his second and HIBS ‘ third when he outpaced Sissoko and planted the ball behind Bell

As the game became stretched Barbour was sent off for pulling back Griffiths Gros handled the resulting freekick as part of the defensive wall inside the box giving Griffiths the opportunity to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot who wasted no time in blasting the ball home and firing HIBS into the semifinals

Hibs started brightly against Craig Brewster’s United side that contained Grant Brebner

HIBS took the lead when Kevin Thomson found Derek Riordan lurking on the edge of the penalty area who cut inside and dispatched a low drive into the goalkeeper’s bottom left hand corner

United almost equalised when Grant Brebner spotted Simon Brown off his line but his effort from 30 yards clipped the top of the crossbar on it’s way over

HIBS increased their lead in 25 minutes when Chris Killen found Riordan out on the left ran into the box for the expected cross and Alan Archibald in trying to clear the danger only succeeded in heading the ball not over the crossbar but into the roof of his own net

Chris Killen did get his reward however in 33 minutes when picking up a long ball from Riordan he found himself through on goal with only Gary Kenneth in the way between him and goal He turned him inside out a couple of times before sending a shot across the diving Craig Samson and in at the far post

    Hibernian 0 v 2 Airdrieonians

Anyone remember the old Airdrieonians ( 1878-2002) that used to masquerade as a football team full of ex-Jambos that used to love to cynically kick us off the park in the early nineties and employ anti football tactics at every turn?

This Match was one such occasion

Having just won the League Cup we were confident of going for a Cup double but Airdrie had other ideas John Martin saved a Tommy McIntyre penalty after Pat McGinlay was brought down inside the box and with time running out Airdrie struck with a late double whammy sucker punch

This game was the precursor for a repeat scoreline one month later when Budgie and Callum Milne got sent off and Willie Miller saved a penalty guaranteeing them safety in the Premier League and the battle that was our relegation play off back in 1997

Oh Salonika here we come !

Another great European night at Easter Road in front of 30000 but in typical HIBS style leading and coasting 4-1 with only 15 minutes to play they somehow manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory thanks to two late defensive lapses leaving themselves it all to do in the second leg

Eddie Turnbull was confident of us still going through

HIBS outplayed the Yugoslavs for large parts of this game - bear in mind that this side would supply the bulk of the players to Yugoslavia that would help knock Scotland out of the 1974 World Cup

Hibs were unfortunate not to win by more having three good penalty claims turned down by the Spanish Referee

Alex Edwards returned to the team from cold storage and this was a master stroke Wee Mickey being involved in every attack

After only 8 minutes he sent over a free-kick for Alan Gordon to head the first. HIBS were denied a penalty when Gordon was pushed to the ground in the 25th minute a minute later however HIBS were two ahead when Gordon grabbed his second thanks to an Alex Cropley cut back

In the 37th minute alarm bells were ringing when Hlevnjak nipped in to nod past Herriot

Two minutes into the second half and Arthur Duncan restored HIBS’ two goal advantage

Alan Gordon completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute when goalkeeper Sirkovic could only parry a drive from Erich Schaedler and he scored from close range

14 minutes from the end disaster struck when that man Hlevnjak scrambled the ball home to give ‘The Pirates’ hope for the second leg

Hibs led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Captain and Centre Half Mattha Paterson

A classic Scottish Cup tie and a match that had everything Played in a gale with an electric atmosphere it had goals, controversy, crunching tackles, penalties and all topped off with a pitch invasion

There was no TV coverage thanks to a dispute so 20000 crammed into Easter Road

Celtic took a 1-0 half-time lead thanks to a Brian McClair strike from a corner

Stevie Cowan equalised when he bundled the ball over the line in 51 minutes going down the slope

Mark McGhee put Celtic back in front 10 minutes later when he hammered a pass from Johnston into the roof of the net Gordon Chisholm then headed HIBS level with a towering header Stevie Cowan put HIBS 3-2 ahead from the penalty spot

Celtic were then awarded a soft penalty two minutes later that McClair scored with only minutes left on the clock

Joe Tortolano then swept a beautiful ball over to the right wing to substitute ‘ Bomber Harris’ who swept in a low cross that was met by the almost prostrate diving figure of Eddie May to head HIBS into the semifinals of the Scottish Cup and send the East radge

A couple of days ago you asked about Doug Moran winning Cup Final while 'on loan ' from Hibs. Pretty sure it was Falkirk but also pretty sure he wasn't on loan, don't think such transfers existed then. IIRC Doug also won the English league with Ipswich.

    Good question

Pretty sure I answered this at the time but here we go

An interesting article in which he says he did not officially join Falkirk until the summer - must have been some sort of gentleman’s agreement at that time

You are correct he won the Old First Division top tier with Ipswich Town 1961-62

Great article Billy, Thanks! Still not convinced he was on loan though. In England, the loan system was only reintroduced in 1967, it was used in war, e.g. Matt Busby, Hibs, and in early days of amateur football. It would be surprising if Scotland reintroduced it 10 years before England. I'll try to find more.

That 79 cup game was my first Derby match and is etched into my memory. As a 10 year old who was already Hibs daft it totally sealed that I would have the life long misery of undying love for Hibs. Have asked this before but is there any footage if the game, would love to see it again

I was at that game probably the first time I noticed any real segregation at a football match

The match was played in a volatile hostile atmosphere with the yams fighting amongst themselves inside their wee pen

My abiding memory is the look of delight on the faces of George Stewart and Gordon Rae after scoring their goals as they were both big Hibees and had a tremendous desire to win that day from the kick off

Unfortunately not been able to find any footage the closest is a Premier League 1-1 draw played about that time 7 days later in fact

First time I've seen that Tam McManus goal at Rugby Park. Excellent, & nice words from Bobby W afterwards.

What often strikes me reading this thread is that we’ve often had wonderful, hard as nails half back lines (an age thing). Who would want to be taking on Bremner,Stewart,McNamara or Stanton,McNamee,Baxter? Those were the days.
