Can you use the Scotland test and trace app in England or do you have to download the NHS Covid App.

I was just in London and you just tell them you’re from Scotland and they’ll get you to either fill in a sheet or provide a QR code. The NHS app won’t work as you don’t have an NHS number (on the presumption you’re Scottish anyway).

I think they likely are but I think the more general point still stands.

If I had a runny nose and a scratchy throat then I'd likely assume it was my hay-fever rather than covid and go about my business as usual. I'm not sure if there is merit in, or any desire around, making people more aware of these different presenting symptoms now.

This happened to my son. He went to a caravan park for a long weekend but on the first day he told me he had really bad hayfever. I'd heard that was the symptoms of the new variant so he went for a test, sat in the caravan all day the next day waiting for his results which arrived about 7pm and were positive so they packed up and drove home first thing the next morning .

He had his first dose of Pfizer a week before his symptoms started . Our best guess is that he caught it in the pub for the scotland v England game because he has spent a fortnight in the house in front of the tv watching football otherwise (he was on annual leave)

His symptoms got much worse the day after his first symptoms . He said he was floored, no energy, headache , no appetite and full of hayfever symptoms in his eyes and nose. He felt he was much better today but has started coughing

Thank you. It's been a bit stressful for us all. They didnt break any rules but it happens I suppose . I'm fully vaccinated and have been feeling a bit off today so I'm going to book a test tomorrow. Those case numbers are awful.

I know I'm almost contradicting myself less than a dozen posts after I said something different but I wonder how long they will allow this to go unchecked? It seems unlikely it can carry on this way indefinitely even if hospital admissions and deaths remain relatively flat. I'm not suggesting, or wanting, a return of anything like what we had over the winter but there's still something of a a balancing act here. We can't just let this continue to run out of control among a section of the population for numerous reasons, not least the increased strain it puts on the vaccination effort with delays, no shows and all the related issues.

Before answering, the issue of poor attendance and possible reasons at the vaccination centres has come up. I'm not sure what is going on because attendance has been 95% at the EICC the last 2 days where we are predominantly giving Moderna to under 29's. However it was only 45% at the RHS on Sunday.

I have been fairly positive about vaccines and getting back to normal but the last couple of months fill me with dread. I find it hard to work out what is going on with the Delta strain. It has caused havoc in India, the UK and seems to be spreading in Lisbon and Australia but for example Germany has had it since April and it accounts for about 40%+ of cases and yet cases are falling still, about 300 per day. If following our pathway it would have started to take off by now.

Cases are rising exponentially here with no sign of slowing at present and we have just about the highest rate per 100,000 in the developed world. One of the odd things is compared to alpha the vaccine gives better protection against hospitalisation but more chance of getting infected if fully vaccinated and even more so if unvaccinated or with only one dose. Worryingly the infections are starting to move into the older age groups. The vaccination effort is phenomenal but for example 5% of over 80's have not had their second dose and 5% won't get protection from the vaccines and this is a significant number of people. As more young people get infected this will spread into households and more elderly will get infected. I see cases rising to a significant level that puts pressure on hospitals, less than in the winter but disrupting routine care significantly. Even if numbers fall soon it will take 2-3 months to get down to reasonable levels

The sheer number of cases will disrupt normal life considerably because of people off sick but also because increasing numbers of people will have to self isolate. In the visible world of the media and sport we are already seeing this-Andrew Marr, Robert McIntyre, Billy Gilmour etc. I have stopped going to bars and restaurants not because I fear the virus but because the last thing I want is to get pinged saying that I have to self isolate for 10 days and so can't go out and do exercise or see friends. My brother went to a restaurant and had to isolate for 10 days and then had guests in his garden after the 10 days and they tested positive the next day and he has had a second period of self isolation. I agree with previous posters who say most people are still respectful of rules and bars and restaurants run well but my personal observation is that more people are not wearing masks as they should on public transport and in shops and house mixing is definitely on the increase.

Vaccines will work but it will be another 8 weeks before the younger age group get their second dose. I think it is going to be a pretty pish summer.

Germany has invested in proper ventilation and air quality monitoring systems, so no doubt helping with slowing the spread of the Delta variant, and the public seem to wear the high quality face masks, think their Gov issues them free to vulnerable groups. We're going to live with the virus but do nothing of note to make doing so as safe as poss. The Trade Unions should be all over this imo, making it a legal H&S requirement.

As for Germany and others delta will only increase there numbers when it's above 50%. Its went from 3 to 40 in a few weeks. Ours was dropping with delta until it hit that 50.

We seen the same with alpha this year we got hit January when Europe got hit march. Germany was having hundreds of deaths most days last month when ours was single figures.

Europe's vaccine roll it is good now though. So hopefully like us deaths are low when delta gets there 85% of population this year.

We're all going to have to face delta in the west we're in a good position. I dread to think about the countries unlucky enough not to have our vaccines, or who's population choses not to take them. India shows the devastation it causes before it gets herd immunity

It’ll be interesting to see what’s said in today’s briefing about the case numbers, the hospital numbers are increasing and I’d imagine if the cases continue to climb even higher than they are now, it won’t be long until the numbers would be at a level they’d say they can’t manage. Hospital numbers tripled in the last 6 weeks, if they were to triple again we’d probably have a problem.

I wish I shared your confidence. If case numbers continue to grow, it's not just hospital bed capacity that will be the main indicator. We could well end up with a huge chunk of vaccinated NHS staff testing positive, that in itself is a problem. I remember her saying the contact tracing system only worked when numbers were controlled. They numbers aren't controlled.
