The start of the game was preceded by a minutes applause for the late Eddie Turnbull who had served both clubs so well as Manager and spent his whole playing career with Hibernian

Derek Riordan gave HIBS the lead in the first half but a Josh Maginnis header early into the second half followed by a Chris Maguire double gave the Dons all three points despite HIBS coming close hitting the crossbar and the post

This was a re-arranged fixture as the previous fixture was abandoned after a Kilmarnock fan very sadly collapsed and passed away later in Hospital when the scores were tied at 1-1

Hibs rested Leigh Griffiths with the Scottish Cup Final in mind Kilmarnock played a young team and Lewis Stevenson captained the side

Scott Robertson opened the scoring prodding the ball into the net from close range to claim his first goal for the club. Scott Robertson then added what he thought was a second but this was correctly ruled out as he was adjudged to have used a hand

Kilmarnock flew out the traps in the second half with Paul Heffernan going close. Murdoch in the HIBS goal did well to get down to a Lee Ashcroft header but he could do little about his next attempt a looping back post header that secured Kilmarnock’s equaliser and marked his debut with his first goal for the club

The home side were almost in front moments later when substitute Borja Perez’s strike hit the post and Heffernan connected with the rebound but the ball flew over. Eoin Doyle then headed the ball home but for the second time the referee ruled out a HIBS strike this time for offside

With Kilmarnock looking the more likely in the closing stages as they surged forward HIBS hit them with a late double whammy Alex Harris powered the ball across the face of the goal and Doyle stretched to poke the ball home to claim his 10th goal of the season and in the dying moments as Kilmarnock searched in vain for an equaliser Doyle powered home from 12 yards to secure all three points

A dull match played in wet and windy conditions in which both sides had chances to score but could not provide a winner after extra time so both teams will have to return to Hampden Park for a second replay on Monday 28th May 1979

Honourable mention to Jackie MacNamara who was a rock for us at the back over the three games. 17 year old Stephen Brown looked a real prospect when he came on in this game but sadly he was not to make it at HIBS and I remember Colin Campbell and Gordon Rae both having opportunities to score

We only needed one goal to win it ???

Willie Wilson in the HIBS goal had a wonderful game pulling off a series of excellent saves including a double penalty save

Hibs would go all the way in this competition under the guidance of Jock Stein

HIBS were into the semi-final after defeating Tottenham Hotspur after a replay and faced hot favourites Newcastle United who had defeated Aberdeen 4-2 in the previous round

Newcastle started brightly enough and Tommy Younger pulled off two outstanding saves to deny them but HIBS turned on a virtuoso display of fast interchanging attacking football that was a joy to behold and Newcastle could not cope.

Eddie Turnbull opened the scoring for HIBS in the 16th minute and then turned provider to set up Lawrie Reilly who made it two before the break. Newcastle missed a first half penalty which might have put a different complexion on things but it was not to be as the second half continued in the same format as the first with Bobby Johnstone finishing off a neat three man move and Eddie Turnbull completing the scoring before the end to give HIBS a decisive and convincing 4-0 victory

In the other semi-final Celtic pulled off a shock to defeat Manchester United 2-1 to set up a battle of the greens in the final of the Coronation Cup at Hampden Park on 20th May 1953

16/5/1951 Friendly International Challenge Match

France were much the better side playing the better football keeping the ball on the deck, hitting the crossbar in four minutes and having a goal disallowed for an infringement in 67 minutes

Scotland did not respond well to being outplayed for long periods of the game and four or five players should hang their heads in shame for their behaviour in this international friendly

Scotland did not deserve to win but they scored what proved to be the winner when Redpath was allowed to run with the ball unchallenged from his own box before sending over a cross for Lawrie Reilly to gloriously head home. A goal that had to be seen to to be believed

The French heads seemed to go down after this loss and Newcastle’s Bobby Mitchell missed the easiest of chances from close range when his effort hit the post

Hibs dealt a mortal blow to Gordon Strachan’s Celtic sides’ Championship hopes with this no scoring draw at Easter Road after holding Celtic’s fellow title contenders Rangers 1-1 in midweek thanks to a Derek Riordan strike.

HIBS defended stoutly for long periods of this game their best chance being a Steven Fletcher over-head scissors kick that Artur Boruc did well to save

Celtic now trail Rangers by two points with one game remaining Celtic face Hearts at home and Rangers travel to Tannadice where Dundee United need one point to be sure of a Europa League place

Hibs would finish sixth and Manager Mixu Paatelainen would resign at the end of the season

Scott Brown scored in the 38th and 69th minutes Fernando Pasquinelli pulled one back for Livvy in the 87th minute

Hibs finished seventh in this season Broonie obviously still being utilised as a forward bottom club Motherwell who finished 12th were spared from relegation as First Division Champions Falkirk did not have a suitable ground





17/5/1997 Premier Division Play-Offs Final Leg 1

Hibs had finished ninth in this season and now faced a winner takes all two legged affair against Alex MacDonald’s First Division runner’s up Airdrieonians to hang onto their Premiership status.

From a HIBS point of view Airdrieonians were the worst possible opponents we could face in a play-off situation

They were an awkward squad full of ex-jambos who were dead set on taking HIBS’ place in the old Premier Division they were a team of real scrappers, in your face, niggly and determined to win their own battles all over the pitch at all costs. I am convinced that if Airdrie could pick one team to play in a two legged affair to play in a play-off situation from the top ten it would have been us as we were on a steep downward trajectory under Jim Duffy and Airdrieonians had given us significant problems in cup tie situations in the past

I don’t think I have ever been so nervous going to a football match at Easter Road it was a tense brutal affair with no quarter given or asked played in a very nasty hostile poisonous atmosphere any actual football on display being at a premium as an intense war of attrition developed between both the sides

Luckily HIBS won this game thanks to an unfortunate own goal by the late Steve Cooper but would a slender one goal lead be enough to take through to the away leg?

Gordon Hunter would get sent off in the battle of Easter Road in what would prove to be his last game for HIBS

Airdrieonians would find themselves all square within sixty seconds of a do or die winner takes all second leg battle at Broadwood

As Scottish Cup winners HIBS were invited to contest the Glasgow Charity Cup and they could not get away from Rangers being drawn against them at Cathkin Park in the first round on Saturday 17th May

Having no fear or respect for the Scottish Champions Hibernian immediately went on the attack and the early pressure immediately saw them score but you’ve guessed it it was disallowed for off-side. There was no holding HIBS however and Bobby Atherton gave them a 0-1 half-time lead

In the second half Rangers play was of the highest quality but they just could not break down the resolute HIBS defence they even missed their obligatory penalty

The HIBS team that day was Harry Rennie Archie Gray Jimmy Hogg Barney Breslin Jimmy Harrower Alex Robertson Bobby Atherton Andy McGeachan Johnny Divers Paddy Callaghan and Jimmy Buchan

Hibs would go on to defeat Morton 3-0 in the semi-final at Tynecastle and defeat Celtic in the final 6-2 at Hampden

This match appeared to be in doubt one hour before kick-off as Leith was hit by a freak torrential downpour The torrent soon passed and HIBS faced bottom club Dundee in their last League game before facing Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final on Sunday 26th May 2013.

HIBS centre-forward Leigh Griffiths would play his last League game for HIBS and would return to parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers after the cup final

A win for the home side would guarantee them seventh place and HIBS dominated the first half Jordon Forster heading over from a Griffiths corner and the Wolves’ hitman almost got his 29th goal of the season when his angled drive drew a good save from Dundee goalkeeper Simonsen. Griffiths followed up and his effort appeared to hit a Dundee arm but the referee waved play-on

After the break the visitors began positively John Baird finding Lewis Toshney in the HIBS box but the on-loan Celt hooked over. A wonderful Hanlon pass over the dark blues defence allowed Griffiths to chest and volley wide before Stevenson sliced high and wide from Harris’s pass

Dundee almost ended their SPL campaign in style. Harkins’s deep cross was taken left footed on the volley by Conroy from 12 yards and the ball flashed back across Ben Williams’s goal missing the post by inches

Griffiths left the field of play in the 73rd minute to a standing ovation to be replaced by Chesterfield bound Eoin Doyle but the goal when it came came from an unlikely source when with 11 minutes to go substitute David Wotherspoon met a Lewis Stevenson cross on the edge of the box and powered home a Zidane like bullet header into the goalkeepers bottom right hand corner to stake his claim for a starting place a week on Sunday

They were dancing in the streets of Raith and on the park as HIBS and their large travelling support celebrated the completion of their Lazarus act by winning their second consecutive and last game 4-0 against already relegated Raith Rovers. Clyde would lose 1-3 at home to Champions in waiting Rangers to confirm their relegation on Wednesday 22nd May.

Raith had finished on just 9 points Clyde 23 and HIBS 25 improvement was needed and Walter Galbraith’s jacket was hanging on a shoogly peg

Hibs finished sixth in this season and entered the Intertoto Cup Mixu Paatelainen replaced John Collins who resigned in the January after a series of poor results which followed a great unbeaten start that took HIBS temporarily to the top of the SPL

Hibs had sold Scott Brown Ivan Sproule Steven Whittaker and David Murphy for a total of 8.5m and lost Chris Killen and Michael Stewart on free transfers

John Collins had replaced them with Brian Kerr Clayton Donaldson Alan OBrien Yves Makalambay Thierry Guthessi Filipe Morais Mickael Antoine Curier Patrick Noubissie Ian Murray John Rankin Colin Nish Aberraouff Zarabi and Martin Canning for a total of £500000






22/5/2005 Scottish League SPL

The last half hour of this final game of the season brought back memories of the infamous World Cup match between West Germany v Austria where both sides sat back with both teams apparently happy with the score as it stood.

Rangers had taken the lead after Nacho Novo had opened the scoring on 59 minutes via a deflection off HIBS defender Gary Caldwell

All ears were glued to transistor radios as Rangers had to win to have any chance of snatching the title from Celtic who would incredibly lose their final game at Motherwell

Hibs who finished in third position qualifying for the UEFA Cup needed to avoid a heavy defeat to prevent Aberdeen overtaking them on goal difference

A lot of HIBS fans at the time were not happy as they felt we had the forwards to cause Rangers problems and should have just went for it besides we were starting to get fed up of other teams celebrating title wins at Easter Road

Aberdeen beat Hearts 2-0 but we were back in Europe







22/5/1997 Premier Division Play-Offs Final Leg 2

After the battle of Easter Road HIBS arrived at Broadwood for this play-off showdown 1-0 up thanks to an own goal from Steve Cooper

Such was the importance of this game to Hibernian Football Club I looked behind me shortly before kick off and there sat three HIBS legends together Pat Stanton Lawrie Reilly and Joe Baker

This HIBS feel good factor was destroyed within 90 seconds of the kick off however when HIBS found themselves one goal down and Airdrieonians were level on aggregate

Jamie McQuilken inadvertently found Forbes Johnston with a clearance Jim Leighton came for his cross to make a routine save Big John Hughes headed the ball out of his hands ball drops to Paddy Connolly 1-0 Airdrie

Thereafter the game continued in the same brutal vein as the first leg with the emphasis being on the physical side of the game and the basic tactic being thump it hard thump it wide thump it high and if you can take the man as well so much the better a real battle for survival the only subtlety or signs of any football coming from Darren Jackson and Paddy Connolly

Airdrieonians were all over HIBS as the half wore on and one doubted that if HIBS conceded another they would be able to come back

Jim Leighton had his work cut out and was performing miracles until he got knocked out cold after a sickening clash of heads with Steve Cooper

Things looked to have got a lot worse for HIBS when they conceded a penalty in 34 minutes Referee Willie Young awarding the kick when a Johnston shot struck Brian Welsh’s hand in the box Up stepped Steve Cooper to redeem himself for his og at Easter Road such was his enthusiasm and eagerness to score he could only succeed in hitting the ball with all his might over the crossbar and into Row Z

22 seconds into the second half and Referee Young awarded HIBS a penalty after Jimmy Sandison was softly adjudged to have pulled back Pat McGinlay but a penalty it was and Darren Jackson stepped up to show Airdrie how a penalty should be taken

Airdrie suffered a blow in 55 minutes when Gary Mackay was stretchered off to be replaced by Brian McPhee who only took 3 minutes to get booked

Midway through the second half HIBS were awarded a second penalty when Brian Grant and Davies contested a Paul Tosh cross in the box and the Airdrie man was adjudged to have handled no protest up stepped Darren Jackson cool as you like 2-1 HIBS

Four minutes later Airdrie knew they were staying in the First Division. Grant played the ball through to Tosh in space who had run through from the half-way line his first attempt was parried by Rhodes but he wasted no time in burying the rebound into the empty net

Jimmy Sandison already booked and realising he would not be seeing old adversary Pat McGinlay again for another season decided to elbow him in the face and the Airdrie captain was immediately shown the red card

HIBS rubbed salt into the Airdrie wounds when substitute Keith Wright in his last appearance for HIBS rose unchallenged to meet a superb Darren Jackson cross and bullet a typical header into the net to make it 4-1 for HIBS on the night and at last we could relax

With just two minutes left Hughes handled a Connolly cross in the box and Kenny Black stepped up to score Airdrie’s consolation

Like the first leg this was a rough house game of football with eight bookings ( five for Airdrie) one sending off and four penalties awarded

A game where Airdrie’s rough style of football for once backfired and came back to haunt them

From a HIBS point of view they had held onto their top-flight status and had Darren Jackson Jim Leighton Pat McGinlay and Keith Wright to thank for pulling them out of the fire worryingly only one of them would be at Easter Road in the following season

A late David Gray header saw Hibernian beat Rangers to end a tortuous 114 year wait to lift the Scottish Cup

Anthony Stokes scored twice for HIBS either side of goals from Kenny Miller and Andy Halliday Then Gray headed in the winner before HIBS and their fans celebrated a timeless triumph

Hibs started off as though the Managers’ instructions were still ringing in their ears The strategy was that the three centre backs would stifle the corridors of space that Rangers look to exploit in attack while heavy pressing would disrupt the rhythm of Mark Warburton’s side

The planning was meticulous but an immediate advantage would not have been anticipated There was a committed intent that enthused HIBS ‘ play It was evident in the way that Stokes clattered into Jason Holt in the first minute but also in the way the striker drove into the Rangers penalty area and expertly placed a shot beyond Wes Foderingham

Rangers players were immediately subdued although some might have been feeling an element of culpability Halliday and James Tavernier had failed to win the ball from John McGinn while Rob Kiernan allowed Stokes the time and space to measure his options

Stokes naturally drifts out left but this natural instinct would have been encouraged by Stubbs since the space between Tavernier and Kiernan is the most vulnerable area of the Rangers defence

The extent of Rangers unease could be measured by the raggedness of their play passes went astray and possession was cheaply discarded.

Rangers’ whole philosophy under Mark Warburton was to keep the ball and retain possession and it was a departure from this philosophy that brought them level Foderingham’s kick up the park was won by Miller allowing Barrie McKay to gather possession and carry the ball across the field where he found Tavernier the full back immediately swept a cross into the box from deep and Miller leapt ahead of HIBS defender Darren MacGregor to plant a header past Conrad Logan

Flaws made this game exhilarating The defending was so inept at times that opportunities were inevitable Stokes sent an effort bouncing off a post then Miller won another header in the HIBS box that cannoned off the crossbar

Stokes was irrepressible at times at least when faced with Tavernier who had little answer to his forward runs Stokes cut inside the fullback early in the second half but his effort was pushed away by Foderingham That was to be a redeeming feature of the game but it was Rangers who took the lead

Halliday was allowed the room to shape to shoot around 25 yards out but his effort was fierce and true and the ball flew past Conrad Logan into the far side of the net The onus was now on the HIBS players to respond and to dig deep within themselves to find the means and to do it quickly it truly was time for heroes

The introduction of Liam Henderson made an impact not least because of his set piece deliveries From one Stokes muscled Tavernier aside to head in at the near post It was from another corner kick again from Henderson that Gray scored his historic momentous winning goal before surging off towards the fans to celebrate

Hibs went into this match having only won once in the last 19 games whereas Hamilton had only lost one in 15 games

Step up young Jason Cummings 18 who scored the first two goals of his career either side of half-time

His first was a superb 25 yard strike in 39 minutes that Cuthbert in the Hamilton goal appeared to have covered but the ball did seem to swerve in mid-air cue celebrations and relief amongst the large travelling support

The second half was barely 10 minutes old when Cummings added his second a run and cross by Heffernan ended with the ball landing at the teenager’s feet inside the penalty area who showed the presence of mind to look up under extreme pressure and chip the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and over the line Ziggy Gordon did manage to scramble back and boot the ball away to safety but TV evidence later showed that the ball had crossed the line by at least two feet and the officials were correct to award the goal

Hibs managed to repel intense Hamilton pressure and held out for an unexpected but welcome 0-2 win to take into the second leg at Easter Road

Hibs crashed out of the Scottish Premiership after losing this play-off final second leg at home on penalty kicks

Terry Butcher’s spectacular run of bad form as HIBS Manager was ended thanks to Jason Cummings’ wonderful strikes at New Douglas Park in midweek to give HIBS a two goal advantage going into this winner takes all decider

HIBS decided to play one striker upfront, Paul Heffernan and deployed Jason Cummings as an extra midfielder Butcher also gave a start to onloan forward Danny Haynes ahead of the off form teenager Alex Harris but he had to be replaced by Harris after only six minutes after a crunching Jon Routledge challenge so HIBS were back to their midweek line-up

Six minutes later and the ball was swiftly dispatched into the HIBS net following a misplaced pass by Ryan McGivern. Ali Crawford’s interception was flicked on by Routledge to Jason Scotland whose quick turn mugged Michael Nelson before the striker’s left foot drive from just inside the box slipped under Ben Williams’ outstretched hand

Accies could smell the fear in the Stadium and as in the first leg continued to play the better controlled possession football. HIBS -who had not been performing well at home since the closure of the old East Stand back in 2010 - relied on the long hopeful ball up to Heffernan hoping for a chink in the second tier defence. This ploy almost worked as the natives grew more and more nervous Heffernan having a goal ruled out for off-side and Jason Cummings having a close range header cleared off the line shortly after Williams had saved a net bound Louis Longridge drive with an outstretched foot

Into the second half and Butcher pushed Cummings up front to join Heffernan in search of a tension releasing equaliser this reduction in midfield manpower however left HIBS’ creaking defence exposed and Williams had to be quick off his line to block a Scotland shot after his quick turn left two HIBS defenders going the other way as he bore down on goal

The match wore on and Accies continued to play the tidier controlled football Accies Manager Alex Neil brought himself on to control the tempo of the game and HIBS responded by introducing veteran Kevin Thomson for substitute Alex Harris

The clock was ticking down and after 83 minutes Heffernan was replaced by Tudor-Jones a player who later publicly admitted that he signed a contract at HIBS knowing his legs were gone ?

Deep into four minutes added on time and Butchers plan to hang on to what we had back-fired spectacularly when with seconds to go Scotland once again turned Nelson out wide and fired in a low cross that Tony Andreu turned home with his outstretched foot

There was no further scoring in Extra Time and Kevin Thomson and Jason Cummings would miss their penalties cue protests outside the ground and deserved Accies celebrations inside

Terry Butcher is statistically Hibernian’s worst ever Manager his honeymoon bounce lasted three games over Christmas and things started to go pear-shaped when we surrendered a two goal lead at Tannadice. When he took over we were nowhere near relegation lying in seventh position and then we went on a downward spiral we seemed to be incapable of getting a win and no one seemed to notice when Raith Rovers knocked us out of the Scottish Cup 2-3 at home

His man-management, motivational and tactical skills or rather lack of, team selections and accusations of bullying and use of hair brained schemes also being called into question

We were now headed for the second tier where Hearts and The Rangers were waiting for us but perhaps it was a blessing in disguise we had to change the structure of our club after years of mismanagement and get away from short term fixes it was time to regroup we certainly had to find a new Manager and a new squad of players

There is no doubt that relegation was a financial disaster to our club and was an enormous psychological blow to a club and a support who once again had been badly let down

With Leigh Griffiths clearly not 100% Eoin Doyle was probably our best chance of a goal and he blew his lines with a header that was too close to Fraser Forster in the opening minutes ...unlucky!

After that it was the Anthony Stokes show

A younger leaner meaner fitter Stokes did to us what he was to do against The Rangers three years later though thankfully he did not score laying two goals on a plate for Gary Hooper with whipped in crosses and generally being a pest the whole game

Hooper should have had a hat-trick into the second half but took a fresh air swipe at Lustig’s pass in front of goal but Joe Ledley followed up to hit a rising shot high into Williams’ net to give the score perhaps an unfair reflection but I suppose no one could realistically argue

The large HIBS support were defiant until the end, we would be back, but little did they know there would be even more pain to follow

Hibs to have any chance of winning this would have to be at their very best to compete with Martin O’Neill’s very strong and physical treble chasing Celtic team Unfortunately, unknown to us mere HIBS fans at the time, Le God looked as though he was carrying an injury and we were without our talismanic midfielder Russell Latapy who had effectively been sacked by the club There was also no place in the squad for Tam McManus who had scored in every round other than the semi-final

Hibs held their own up until Jackie McNamara replaced Lubo Moravcik on 18 minutes he then proceeded to rip us apart scoring on 39 minutes. Larsson added a second just after half-time before finishing the scoring with a soft penalty after being pulled down by Gary Smith with 10 minutes left

Hibs had reached the semi-final of the Summer Cup under Jock Stein and the first leg was away at Rugby Park and as usual it would prove to be a tricky tie

Kilmarnock scored through a Ronnie Hamilton penalty a John McNamee og and goals from Brian McIlroy and Jackie McInally.

HIBS responded through Vincent Hamilton and Martin and crucially Martin saw Sandy McLaughlin save his late penalty kick but it mattered not a jot as HIBS would go on to defeat Kilmarnock 3-0 at Easter Road three days later and qualify to meet Aberdeen in what would prove to be an epic final

Worth mentioning that after this semi-final at Rugby Park both sets of supporters gave the teams a rousing standing ovation for a good old fashioned entertaining end to end Cup tie

27/5/1961 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Semi-Final Play-Off

Hibs had reached the semi-final of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup which would nowadays be the equivalent of the UEFA Cup or the Europa League

Hibs had already played Roma home and away in the semi-final drawing 2-2 at Easter Road and drawing 3-3 in Rome

Based on present day rules HIBS would be in the Final on the away goals rule but back then the venue for the deciding tie in the event of a draw would be decided by the toss of a coin

In his book Davie Gibson states that the Hibernian Directors actually agreed a financial guarantee to return at the end of May which was fine by him as he had thrown a coin in the Trevi Fountain with Johnny MacLeod and Ronnie Simpson hoping to return one day but not on the end of a 6-0 thrashing

Roma won the toss allegedly but the mysterious thing was the tie was to take place a full month after the 3-3 draw in Rome and a month after HIBS’ domestic season had ended

The Italians were still in the middle of their season and the under prepared HIBS team having not played for a month suffered their heaviest ever away defeat in Europe.

Manfreddi scored in the first minute and would add another three both sides would each miss a penalty before Menichelli and Selmosson would complete the scoring for the Italians

The HIBS players treated the whole trip as a holiday as they did not expect to win and according to Eric Stevenson’s book they would go on organised excursions to the Coliseum, The Trevi Fountain and other local landmarks all laid on by the Daily Express.

An Italian family back in Edinburgh had arranged a slap feed with free flowing wine at a top class local restaurant

Many of the players suffered sunburn lying on the beaches under the intense hot summer sun

The big attraction for the Italian fans was of course Joe Baker but little did they or the HIBS fans realise that he had already been sold

Roma would go on to defeat Birmingham City 4-2 in a two legged final a final that if things had been different should have been a Battle of Britain

As Scottish Cup holders HIBS were invited to contest the Glasgow Charity Cup

Having knocked out Rangers in Glasgow HIBS now found themselves up against Morton at neutral Tynecastle

Hibs were in confident mood having won the Scottish Cup The East Of Scotland League The McCrae Cup and the Roseberry Charity Cup

Hibs played the same team that had recently defeated Hearts in the Roseberry Cup Final with Barney Breslin replacing the injured Jimmy Harrower

There was no scoring in the first half but HIBS were dealt a cruel blow when Johnny Divers did not reappear for the second half leaving HIBS down to 10 men

Ten Man HIBS however took command of the game with Paddy Callaghan scoring a quick fire double

A third goal from Andy McGeachan finished Morton off but Hibs finished the match with nine men as Bobby Atherton had to retire with a facial injury

So on to the Glasgow Charity Cup Final at Hampden where Hibernian faced Celtic on 31st May who were out for revenge for their recent Scottish Cup Final defeat at Parkhead

Hibs were without the injured Harrower and Divers and things looked bleak on a rain and windswept Hampden Park but a reshuffled HIBS team rose magnificently to the occasion brushing aside Celtic to lead 5-0 at half-time and eventually winning the game 6-2 despite a mini Celtic revival in the second half

28/5/1979 Scottish Cup Final Second Replay

The final instalment of the bore-fest that HIBS so easily could have won

” The first replay was played in dreadful wet conditions and our defence was superb in a match that went to extra time There were no penalty shoot-outs in those days so a second replay took place the following Monday, 28th May

Once again I thought we had our hands on the Cup as we tore Rangers apart in the first half. Tony Higgins put us ahead after 16 minutes but we just could not finish off the Glasgow team Big Derek Johnstone’s equaliser before half-time came off a rebound when Tommy McLean’s 25 yarder took a slight deflection on its way to Jim McArthur who could not hold it.

Johnstone had moved up front and he scored his second after an hour but still we did not give up. The penalty award which allowed us to equalise was soft; McCloy’s offence in the first game was much worse. Ally MacLeod made no mistake and we almost snatched it late on when Bobby Hutchinson who I had sent on to replace Tony Higgins grazed the outside of the post with a shot

Jim McArthur saved a penalty from Alex Miller but in the second half of extra time Davie Cooper swung in a cross and Arthur Duncan dived to try and head clear only for the ball to end up in our net. We had lost the Scottish Cup by an own goal and after 330 minutes of unceasing effort we had nothing to show but losers medals I don’t think Arthur ever forgave himself but he was such a great player for HIBS over the years that no one ever held it against him.”

The Final would be a two legged affair against Aberdeen who had defeated Partick Thistle 3-2 on aggregate in the other semi but the Final would be put on hold until 1st of August due to a typhoid outbreak in the town

Hibs got off to the perfect start in their 2020/21 League campaign with two goals from Man of the Match Martin Boyle

The first when he showed an electric burst of pace when he skipped past the advancing Jake Eastwood to slot into the empty net despite the despairing attempts of a recovering Killie defender

The second when played in by Scott Allan to fire home across the bows of Eastwood

Chris Burke pulled a goal back for the Ayrshire men just before half-time with a cracking 30 yard strike high into Rocky’s top right postage stamp direct from a free-kick

Second Half HIBS showed a new found defensive resolve to see the match out and hang on to claim all three points despite surrendering large swathes of possession to an increasingly desperate Kilmarnock side

Hibs had put in an encouraging display in the first leg at Love Street securing a 3-3 draw with goals from George Stewart Jim Brown and Tony Higgins

St Mirren would go on to win the trophy defeating their arch nemesis Bristol City in the final to become the first and only Scottish club to do so

Their ranks were boosted by exhibee Johnny Hamilton who had been allowed to leave Easter Road and Doug Houston signed from Dundee

The Match was fast and furious played on a bone hard surface on a summers’ evening

Des Bremner scored his first goal for HIBS only to see Derek Parlane equalise to take the game into extra time

Big Tony Higgins rose from the bench to crash home the winner in extra time with a heroic goal scored on the counter attack to inflict Rangers’ first defeat in 27 games

HIBS would go on to defeat Celtic in the final at Hampden Park thanks to a last minute goal from Alan Gordon

Hibs would go on to win the Summer Cup in a play-off at Pittodrie in September 1964 after a 2-1 second leg win at Easter Road

After coming back from 0-2 down in the first leg to win 3-2 Hibs arrived in Greece full of expectation but the Greeks and their fans obviously still fancied their chances needing only a one goal victory to qualify

This almost came to pass in 44 minutes when Tsilianidis rattled the crossbar with a header HIBS attacked from the rebound Kamberi fed in Super John McGinn who blasted the ball into the opposite corner to send the fans behind the goal into raptures

Things got worse for Asteras three minutes into the second period when they had a man sent off

Down to ten men the Greeks continued to pour forward and pulled one back when that man Tsilianidis again managed to roll Ambrose before striding on to slot the ball beyond Adam Bogdan

Bogdan who some fans held responsible for the two goals lost in Edinburgh performed heroically pulling off no less than five fantastic saves from three goal bound headers and two one on ones as HIBS held on for a deserved victory

Special mention also for Super John McGinn who gave 110 % and put his body on the line for the hibee cause knowing he was off on a lucrative contract to Aston Villa A true professional

Rangers arrived fresh from their victory in the European Cup Winners Cup Final in Barcelona but HIBS were on the cusp of something extra special at Easter Road

Hibs were imperious on the night with Alex Cropley and Mickey Edwards pulling the strings in midfield
King Paddy Stanton opened the scoring just before half-time with Alan Gordon adding two in the second half the second a glorious header

HIBS were on a revenge mission and would face Celtic in the final at Hampden Park

I remember as usual Rangers could not take a beating and there was a lot of crowd trouble at this game which was the beginning of the end for the Cave
