Hibs and Celtic were locked on points in the fight for the coveted fourth place and the UEFA Cup spot This game was originally postponed from 3rd December 1977 Both clubs would play again at Easter Road on the Saturday and the Hibees would be victorious This match being played on the preceding Wednesday night
HIBS dominated the early play squandering a couple of early chances to score before Tony Higgins finally gave HIBS the lead with a shot that swerved over Peter Latchford and into the unguarded net after the Celtic defence had failed to clear an Ally MacLeod cross into the box
Celtic equalised on 30 minutes when Ronnie Glavin created a chance for promising youngster George McCluskey to slot home
The half ended 1-1 and HIBS must have regretted those missed chances
The second half was uneventful until in the dying minutes Big Dode Stewart blundered with a passback allowing Tommy Burns to nip in and rattle the base of Mike McDonald’s post At the other end Hibs missed a goalden chance when Latchford dropped a cross at Willie Murray’s feet and with the very last kick of the ball Dowie drew an excellent full length save from McDonald

Fletcher 45
St Mirren who knew victory would see them move two points clear of tenth placed Inverness CT totally dominated this game and had HIBS pinned back in their own half for long spells
St Mirren broke the deadlock in 28 minutes when Andy Dornan scored his third goal in as many games when he let a lofted pass from McGinn drop over his shoulder and hammered in an unstoppable shot from the right hand side of the penalty area high past Szamotulski
HIBS struggled to produce anything of note but they did fashion an unlikely equaliser just before half-time when Steven Fletcher controlled Derek Riordan’s long accurate pass just inside the box and sent a superb left footed shot low past Mark Howard
The second half continued in the same format with HIBS defending in depth and attacking on the counter Fletcher breaking free in 51 minutes and grazing the Saintees crossbar Howard pulling off a miraculous save from a Sol Bamba point blank power header from a John Rankin cross and Colin Nish electing to shoot in the 89th minute when Riordan was standing in acres of space screaming for the ball

This match took place at the Holy Ground as Celtic Park was suffering from fire damage
The HIBS team was not in good shape because of injuries and four reserves were drafted in three defenders and one forward
Celtic’s legendary brilliant young goalkeeper John Thomson was to have an uncharacteristically bad game selling two goals and Celtic’s international fullback Willie McStay was to compound matters by scoring an own goal Jimmy McColl scored Hibs’ fourth goal

His surname does not have an e at the end.
He was one of the most sought after players of his time.
His £10.000 transfer to Hibs from Clyde was a Scottish record at the time.
He returned to Clyde for the same fee 8 months later .
I could not find an explantion for that, though.
He went to Celtic a year after that for £12.000 and scored twice against us on his debut.
I read he racked up many thousands in transfer fees.
He also played doon south.
So i guess he retired ,if he looked after his money, in good financial nickLast edited by Mick O'Rourke; 13-04-2021 at 06:08 PM.

Hibernian 1 v 2 Celtic
McGinlay
Title chasing Celtic came to Leith HIBS rediscovered how to play and gave as good as they got Andy Millen the new midfield destroyer breaking up all Celtic attacks and Jim Leighton pulling off early saves from Tosh McKinlay and Pierre Van Hooijdonk The game plan went out the window however just before half-time when Graeme Love got involved in a tangle with Van Hooijdonk and caught him with a flying arm right in front of the Referee and saw red
Into the second half and HIBS took the lead when Pat ‘Goals’ McGinlay got on the end of a Michael O’Neill knock down turned his marker and sent a shot beyond the diving Gordon Marshall inside his near post
HIBS continued to give as good as they got until 20 minutes from the end when the 10 men started to tire and Van Hooijdonk scored with a point blank header Kevin McAllister then went on a mazy trade mark dribbling run hit the byline and took out Marshall with a cross to the back post O’Neill and the late arriving McGinlay got in each other’s way trying to scramble the ball over the line and the chance was lost

https://youtu.be/i9G9qny1atc
Hibernian wearing their black away strips spoiled Celtic’s flag unfurling day when a glorious ball from Stephen Glass sent Steven Fletcher galloping through on goal and he buried his shot low through the legs of the advancing Boruc into the corner of the net from 12 yards
Celtic’s pressure eventually paid off in 76 minutes when the unmarked Maciej Zurawski buried a header from a Paul Telfer cross past Malkowski

Pretty sure that Celtic did their old trick of bringing forward League fixtures in order that their stars could serve their suspensions to be available for this fixture Celtic’s McCarthy springs to mind who just happened to score the first goal

After drawing the first game 0-0 - Hibernian forward Willie Smith squandering a glorious chance to bring the Cup back to Easter Road in the last minute sending his shot past the post HIBS were resoundingly thrashed in this replayed Scottish Cup Final by the better team there is no doubt
HIBS can however claim mitigating circumstances being forced by the SFA to play a League match the day before the replay
Everyone at Easter Road was stunned but true to their traditional attitude they complied without a public outcry
Future HIBS goalscoring legend Jimmy McColl putting an exhausted and jaded HIBS side to the sword scoring the first two goals
