16/12/1972 Scottish League Division One
Hibernian 8 v 1 Ayr United
Cropley 1
Gordon 17,32 and 36
O’Rourke 41,46 and 82
Stanton 56
A brilliant game and a fantastic performance played in a carnival atmosphere
Ayr United could not live with us right from the first whistle when Cropley scored.
No team would have lived with us that day
The Tornadoes were immense
An exhibition match of precision passing football and expert finishing
The Scottish League Cup and Drybrough Cups were on display
Will we ever see their likes again ?
HIBS Herriot Brownlie Schaedler Stanton Black Blackley Edwards O’Rourke Gordon Cropley and Duncan
Att 12500
Footnote:
To give this breathtaking result some context Jimmy O’Rourke scored his sixth hat-trick of the season and HIBS’ fourth goal was their 100th of the season and it was only 16th December
Ally Macleod the Ayr United Manager described HIBS’ performance that day as the best he had ever seen
What a game that was Billy!
Am I right in thinking that by around about New Year O'Rourke Gordon & Duncan had scored over 100 goals.
The 100 goals in itself is a huge achievement but I am sure I have read the stat I refer to above before and thought WTF how is that even possible?
To answer your question, the answer is sadly never.
Glorious Glorious days that cemented a young boys love of football in general and Hibs in particular
Despite all the kickings receieved between the and now it has never faded and never will, it has waxed and waned but there are few feelings like a great Hibs win.
