    1894 Hibernian 2 v 0 Celtic

Hibs still in the Second Division after winning the Division were drawn against First Division leaders Celtic at Hibernian Park in the second round of the Scottish Cup

Celtic were first out onto the Park in their green and white hoops a team that contained ex Hibernians Dunbar Doyle Kelly Maley and Blessington all tempted West by Celtic pieces of silver

Hibernian appeared in their all green jerseys to a rapturous applause from the assembled 15000 crowd many thousands having been locked outside

HIBS won the toss and kicked up the slope

Mr Donald of Port Glasgow was the Referee with two linesmen Philip Farmer Hibernian and Paddy Gallacher Celtic

The first half brought no goals despite intense Hibernian pressure the highlight being when Barney Breslin knocked over the Celtic linesman with a rocket shot after lifting his flag once too often

HIBS took the lead one minute into the second half going down the slope with a beautiful angled shot from Mick Murray

Celtic were then awarded their customary penalty kick that James McGinn Hibernian’s new former Junior international goalkeeper managed to save tipping Madden’s powerful shot over the crossbar

Hibs were inspired after this and laid siege to the Celtic goal but their noisy vociferous fans had to wait until the final minute when Hibernian Captain James Judge Murphy scored direct from a free-kick from outside the box to send shock waves around Scottish Football

The roar that met the winning goal from the Irish navvies was described thus:

When Hibernian placed this keystone on their arch of triumph a deafening shout went up that echoed in the hollow girders of the Forth Bridge and scared the wild fowl on the distant Bass Rock Far away in Fife the fishers heard faint murmurs of that mighty roar and looked up from their nets wondering

Hibs playing their third game in six days started with their two main strikers Jamie MacLaren and Florian Kamberi on the bench

Livingston who had swatted away Hearts 5-0 eight days previously were unchanged

After a tight first half in which either team could have taken the lead it was left to Scott Hardie 10 minutes into the second half to score his third goal in four games when he lobbed a Declan Gallagher pass over the advancing Bogdan

Hibs had an immediate chance to restore parity when Martin Boyle was hauled down inside the box but Florian Kamberi was unconvincing, lacking any confidence and Kelly made a routine save from his telegraphed spot kick

It was left to young Ryan Porteous playing through the pain barrier as he appeared to reset his damaged knee on more than one occasion to lead by example to stoop to head home a fine cross by Daryl Horgan to snatch the equaliser

    Murphy 20

Hibs began life without John Collins with a battling draw at Parkhead

HIBS under the cosh for most of this game broke free from their shackles on 20 minutes when David Murphy charged forward exchanged a pass with Benji on the edge of the Celtic box before unleashing a fierce drive that entered the Celtic net via the underside of the crossbar at a rate of knots

Celtic with no fewer than five former Hibees in their ranks Caldwell, Brown, Hartley, Riordan and Killen continued to press forward but HIBS held out for almost an hour until Jarosik scored from a corner

HIBS were reduced to ten men for the last 10 minutes when Benji limped off HIBS having used all of their subs

Vennegoor Of Hesselink hit the base of the post in the last minute with a header

Hibs Ma-Kalambay McCann Hogg Jones Murphy Zemmama Kerr Beuzelin Chisholm Stevenson and Benji

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Rangers

    Higgins
    Campbell

Hibs were bottom of the table looking certainties for relegation but they still had one ace up their sleeve George Best

On a frozen rock hard pitch Best put on a masterclass performance orchestrating the midfield Rangers had no answer to him He was quite literally dancing on ice One crude attempt to dispossess him by Derek Johnstone with a challenge from behind ended with Best picking up the ball and asking the prostrate Johnstone “ Is this what you are after?”

Tommy McLean gave Rangers the lead direct from a free kick Tony Higgins equalised in the second half when Ally Macleod burst through and Higgins unleashed an exocet low into the goalkeeper’s bottom right hand corner Colin Campbell got some small recompense for the Scottish Cup Final when the goalkeeper appeared to have his looping header covered but he landed awkwardly resulting in the ball hitting off his back and drifting over the line

    Hibernian 5 v 0 Morton

    O’Rourke 3
    Gordon 2

With mist and rain over Easter Road the fans were invited to take cover under the covered enclosures free of charge

HIBS scored the first in 17 minutes when Cropley floated over a corner Stanton headed on and O’Rourke crashed the ball high into the net from 5 yards giving Baines no chance

In 24 minutes HIBS increased their lead O’’Rourke clipped a ball over his shoulder to the onrushing Duncan who hit the byline and sent over the perfect cross for Gordon to glance into the inside of the net

Into the second half and after 54 minutes Edwards sent O’Rourke clean through on goal he struck his shot firmly enough but the ball got stuck on the sawdust and agonisingly rolled over the line after what seemed an eternity

    O’Rourke completed his hat-trick in 77 minutes

Gordon added a fifth in 82 minutes

22/12/1970 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 3 Leg 2

    Liverpool 2 v 0 Hibernian (Agg 3-0)

Hibs hit the post twice through Johnny Graham and Joe McBride but it was not to be goals by Heighway and Boersma gave Liverpool a comfortable win

Hibs gave a better account of themselves than in the first leg and entertained the appreciative home fans but it was felt that Baines might have done better for the decisive second goal and was deceived by the flight of the ball

It was to be Joe McBride’s last game for the greens

    22/12/1883 Scottish Cup Round 6

    Hibernian 6 v 1 Battlefield

This game brings us to the strange case of Jim Brogan

Brogan was one of the scorers in this match but this was to be his last game for the club

Brogan was a real asset to the club a prolific scorer who had scored six goals on his debut

The problem was that even although he was a Catholic he wasn’t practicing and refused to attend mass or join in any religious marches

After 3 months he left to join our arch rivals Hearts who were only too pleased to sign him but after only a few months there he was tempted by the professional game down south and joined Bolton Wanderers where he became a regular goalscorer

He was a good player and Catholic but he wasn’t Catholic enough for HIBS at that time

Brogan left Bolton in 1892 and worked in the shipyards until he was 85

I was at the Raith game when Gordon Smith broke his leg. As well as the collision with the goalie a Raith defender stamped on his leg as he was on the ground, Most people near to the incident thought it was deliberate. No stretcher-he was carried off with two guys supporting him.

Heard Derek Johnstone tell a story about that game at Easter Road. The manager had told him to put one on George Best. Went in at half time to a mouthful of abuse from his boss about his lack of putting one on Bestie. Johnstone replied for Christ sake boss I am doing best but can't get anywhere near him and when I did he nutmegged me.

Dinnae knock Benny he once scored the perfect hat-trick versus Celtic

I remember Bestie hitting a superb 40 yard crossfield pass to Tony Higgins and shaking his head as it took Tony two attempts to bring his superb ball under control ( Partick Thistle Home)

Gary Locke brought his Raith Rovers team containing ex Jambos Jason Thomson and pantomime villain Rudi Skacel to Easter Road and filled his sack with a point knocking HIBS off their perch at the top of the League

HIBS dominated the first half with Kevin Cuthbert making magnificent saves from Shinnie Commons and Cummings

Into the second half and Jean-Yves M’Voto got his head to a Johnston cross to nod past Ross Laidlaw for the opener

Raith Rovers grew in confidence and Jason Thomson clipped a 25 yarder off Laidlaw’s crossbar

HIBS were third in the league and played a strong side but Rangers were too good on the day on a game played on a heavy muddy pitch

That friendly match against Man Utd they only wanted to open the main stand and enclosure but that many people turned up they had to open up the terracing which had not been cleared. Nowadays the Health and Safety police would have had a heart attack.

The 2000 derby rankles. Team v team we should have destroyed them. When Lovell scored the feeling was that at last we'd got going and now we'd see how close we could get to the 6-2 game. It was close to half time, a real booster and I remember bouncing to Rock DJ with strangers as I nipped downstairs at half time.

That was as good as it got though. Don't know if they were complacent. Was the John O'Neil red card game against Rangers (RIP) the week before, or after? Anyway, two big games where the wheels started loosening.
