Nice big glass of red wine £6.95 to wash it down
Dhoom, in Dunfermline. £28.95 for a ten course tasting menu. Absolutely phenomenal.
If youre in the southside at some point, Verdo a turkish barbecue on salusbury place (i think) does absolutely mountainous portions. Their Verdo special for £70 (62 take out) is supposed to be for 3 but could easily feed seven with all the breads salads and dips.
I've passed it many times, might have to look at the menu and see what's on offer.
I'm going to the Hermitage tonight, only one vegan dish on the menu, a burger £16.50. I always hope that it might actually be home made, but ach, who am I kidding, the vegan restaurants can't ersed making them themselves, so why should a pub chef.
Well the Hermitage Bar last night.
Virtually empty so we had a choice of table. All the tables were manky. Varnished wood with added stickiness. At least that ensured you didn't rest elbows on the surface.
My vegan burger was tiny- small in size and obviously an off the shelf item. The chips were skinny and were at least well cooked, hot and insufficient in quantity. The salad was literally a lettuce leaf, slice of tomato and half a gherkin. Partner had Nachos, said they were decent.
The place was freezing cold, had to put my jacket back on after being seated for ten minutes. Service was fine, I told him the portion was too small, which was shrugged off.
In and out within an hour, will never return for food. Bill was £40.00, which included a half pint and a coke. Daylight robbery.
Try the mosque kitchen for brilliant vegan and non vegan curries, big portions and cheap. The better one is at the side of the main mosque near pear tree. There is a rival with the same name in Nicholson Sq which isn't as good. It's basic, paper plates and simple seating but tidy and mass
:agree:
I've been going there ( the one with outdoor seating) since it started serving food, must be 20 years or more. It's basic, still cheap and hits the spot. Was in a week or so ago. It too is downsizing on the portions, they have introduced much smaller plates recently. At least your not paying through the nose for it though.
Black Rabbit, Seeds for the soul and a number more have popped up but none would tick your box of cheap or plentiful. I like most, eat more in the house or save up and go abroad when i can, rather than eating out regularly here nowadays. It's as you say tiny and ridiculously priced most places. Paying 15 bar for tacos or a burger I could do better myself with a £7 pint to wash it down
One of my best mates used to be the head chef at the Hermitage. He walked out a few months back. He wanted to revamp the menu and the owner basically vetoed every decision even though cost per portion the new menu mostly cooked from scratch would have been cheaper then the stuff they were buying in. Never understand why someone employs a chef, and a good one in my mate's case, then doesn't listen to them when it comes to devising and executing a menu. You end up with a situation like you have described.
Owner has a couple of pubs and there has been a slow decline at each of them after a good start.
The Spylaw Tavern is one of them. AFAIK, it's still doing relatively well. We go at least a few times a year and we always have to book a table.
I personally think it's slightly overpriced(for an out of town location) but the food is always decent and they always have a couple of decent Beavertowns on tap.
Seeds for the Soul was overpriced and again the food was rationed severely. Very tasty, but way too expensive for what you get.
I'm more bothered about being satisfied than budget as such, although I do think £16.50 for a vegan burger is quite pricey, especially when it's straight off the shelf.
Was in Vittoria's pre match a couple of weeks ago, food was excellent and with the bread plate and olives shared, it satisfied the hunger. I also like that place on Constitution St, Rocksalt. Nice food, decent price and reasonably generous with the scran.
I'm not a great pub person either, preferring to sit and enjoy the conviviality of food and a blether without unnecessarily overly loud music blasting away (another bug bear).
I remember being in the Gleneagles Hotel, we were eating from a set menu as part of the deal. Waiter asked how the food was and I said it was great but I'm still hungry. He offered me a second main course in place of the dessert, oh how my partner frowned. That's part of the challenge, not wanting to create a fuss, but we should be telling folk if the food is insufficient in portion size.
Off topic but is there a bookable, sit-down food place at or near Porty open on New Year's Day? (Probably be in a party of seven or eight, maybe more, most with frozen extremities.) Any suggestions welcome!
Went to Le Petit Beef Bar a couple weeks back. Steak was lovely, chips were average at best, salad was atrocious and the price was obscene.
Went to Chez Jules on Sunday and just cannot fault it. The value there is just out of this world.
Ha Ha !
Went to Chez Jules last summer was like stepping into a Time Machine and being transported back to Pierre Victoire 1980 everything was exactly the same even the House Red nothing has changed loved the nostalgia but in 2023 I thought it was ok but still great value if not a bit basic
If only I could step into that same Time Machine and be transported back to the original Henderson’s Salad Bar Hanover Street or King Hero Thistle Street 1980 that would be ace
Really like Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Restaurant St Andrews Square it is clean hygienic and the food is top notch but only for a lunch £22 for three courses and always ask for tap water any other time it is a rip off tbh
Missed the Lunch sitting a few weeks back and paid more than three times that for two sharing a starter Still ragin !
Was in his Street Burger St James’ place on Saturday night and won’t be in a hurry to return service was slow cutlery dirty expensive but still queues of people waiting to get in when we left a totally different experience from the Bread Street kitchen which is a level above
