A sobering thread on the increase of poverty since the tories got in power, 600,000 more kids in poverty than in 2012. If you vote tory not only are you a clown you are also complicit to the hunger and pain of those children

Today’s poverty official statistics show that between April 2021 and March 2022, 14.4 million people were living in poverty in the UK. That figure includes 4.2 million children. These huge numbers were recorded even before the worst of the cost of living crisis hit

Scottish Tories left red-faced as media BANNED from Tory spring forum | The National
A SENIOR Scottish Tory who called the media ban at SNP hustings “disgraceful” has been left humiliated as the Conservatives block journalists from their own spring conference.
Craig Hoy, who serves as the Scottish Conservatives’ deputy chairman and sits in Holyrood as an MSP, slammed the SNP’s initial media ban from hustings last month as “cowardly”.
Now reporters have been banned from attending the Conservatives’ annual spring conference – with the party billing the event as being focused on “internal training”

Although I hate them all for doing this, you have to admire the brazen confidence of Hancock. The others at least feign that they have to think what their rate is. Hancock answers instantly with “10,000 Sterling”. He’s obviously used to whoring himself out this type of thing.
Did I just hear Michael Gove on Sky News saying that drug taking was completely unacceptable or was my beer spiked last night?
They really are laughing at us.
If I want to take on work outside my full time job, I need to gain approval from my employer, who naturally want to know that the role I have agreed contractually to take on won't be impacted. It's highly likely they would not approve this, especially it out involved me going off to South Korea for a few days during agreed working hours.
But if your an MP, who is supposed to work for us - then fill your boots.
The desired effect is to feel giggly, relaxed, euphoric and distort reality. It can also make people feel anxious, paranoid and dizzy. The effects only last for about two minutes.

Only lookng to ban it for sale and consumption from what I've picked up.
Banned possession now. Because it's worked so well for everything else...
As someone pointed out in the article I read, for the vast, vast majority of people having a criminal record will be much more of a danger to their lives that using laughing gas a few times when they are young.
I'm sure these families would agree with the ban. That was just a quick search, there will no doubt be many more. I'm not arguing against the damage a criminal conviction can cause, I'm pointing out it can cause serious health harm.

Because making hash stopped anyone taking it, in the real world kids can get drugs in 30 minutes if they want especially with Snapchat being huge. I'm sure the tories know it will do nothing but they've probably seen it polls well after a week of being ripped on crime
Most of the prohibition laws came in during the early 1920's (when some toff flapper lassie overdosed and caused a huge Leah Betts style scandal in the tabloids).
So, the War On Drugs is 100 years oldish - Hurrah.
If there is a bigger waste of police team I'd like to know about it.

Another way of looking at it, from a sort of Marxist-feminist perspective (and that’s generalising massively) is that those who hold power legitimise or illegitimise different drugs as a means of control and coercion, but also to ensure productivity of the masses. The real question is why some drugs and why not others, and at what times and in what spheres.
Doesn’t have to just be through drugs either, and arguably doesn’t have to be brazenly sinister. One of the cheapest, most effective ways of social control, through reducing anti-social behaviour on public transport, has to have been trying to ensure wi-fi on buses and trains. A population with its focus on a blue screen is a docile population.
When America has a more liberal attitude towards something than you do it's probably time for a re-think.
But not with guns obviously. :greengrin

Just reading through the government website about their new anti social rules, says they will be testing criminals for drugs like Ecstacy, begs the question, do they serious think anyone out their nut on an Eccie is away robbing old ladies?
tory voters everywhere in the UK seriously need to waken the **** up, for the love of ****, and the same goes for anyone voting for pro-brexit parties
Carol Vorderman on Twitter: "Thanks @JolyonRubs for unearthing this video showing the man who Liz Truss wants to make into Lord Mark Littlewood. This is corruption. Nothing short of that. Blatant. Sleazy. It should be investigated by police. Including the politicians any donors are introduced to." / Twitter
The committee stage of the Illegal Migration Bill is about to start (today) in the House of Commons, but MPs debating it still don't have the government's impact assessment.
The Home Office says it will be published "in due course", but that should have been before the law reached parliament.

We are sleepwalking.
Mark Littlewood, the boss of the right wing think tank the Institute of Economic Affairs is one of Truss’s four nominations for the slightly shiny hat. I’ve actually met the guy about twenty years ago and did some work with him when he was an extremely pro European Lib Dem, now from what I’m reading he seems to be a rabid Europhobe and is clearly getting a peerage as a kickback for the work he did as a lobbyist and with the deep referendum analytics that showed the Leave campaigns their attack lines. Now parachuted in to play a role in our democratic process. Nominated by a PM who almost ****ed the country in less than 50 days and is widely regarded as a joke and a disgrace.
When you think deeply about this appointment and others, the only conclusion is that the way the British state works is so fundamentally corrupt that until this changes there is no prospect of genuine democracy in the pure sense of the word.
Yep, I supported Labour because im committed to wealth redistribution and a fairer society. I’m not really interested in what spatial geographic level these things are achieved, it’s a secondary issue and I’ll vote on the Independence question based on where we are culturally and politically at that moment in time I suppose.
I moved away from Scotland before there was a Scottish parliament, and returned in 2010, and when I got engaged in politics up here I found that many in Labour were focusing their guns on the Nats more than I thought prudent or logical. It had become more tribal in my absence. When I was engaged in politics in the early 90s in Scotland, the Tories were the common enemy. Maybe that’s why I feel as if the Labour Party and automatic devotion to unionism (in the national sense) isn’t an inevitable natural state.

Interesting PMQs. Rayner up first, stumbles on her delivery but came across as incisive if a bit nervous. Raab more assured in his delivery but the actual substance coming out of his mouth was ill conceived. Blaming the delay of rape cases making it to court merely on Covid looked particularly bad. Probably needs a lie down after his hammering in the tv studios earlier. It’s still weird seeing shriveled up little Jambo Ian Murray on the opposition front bench next to the grownups.

Saying that, I’m sure research could establish that about most if not all of this UKG’s policies...

Question Time was actually interesting last night. A majority Tory audience appeared compassionate of Asylum Seekers, wanted social housing built and were scathing of the cuts to social services etc. They were almost mocking the Tory on teh panel and at no point did I think they believed a word he was saying. Fiona Bruce even challenged him a couple of times so she much be fearful of her job after her recent performances. It actually restored my faith in the electorate. Perhaps there is a bit of common sense and compassion left in your average voter
I think when considering the value of the media you need to add the revenue they make from their online presence. Income from subscriptions and advertising will go a considerable way to making up for loss from printed publications.
I'd like to see them all going down the tubes but I doubt it will happen.
I don't like the way any of them are run at the moment and I can't see that changing anytime soon. I'd like to see a reset but what I would like is neither here nor there.
The huge and continuing decline in circulation numbers suggests I'm not alone although I'm unsure how online is working out.
I don't know where these figures come from and so cannot vouch for their veracity:
Quote:
Up to date daily circulation figures in Scotland for Scottish newspapers.
Daily Record - 59,615
Sunday Mail - 56,866
The Herald - 12,928
Herald on Sunday - 6,679
The Scotsman - 8,762
Scotland on Sunday - 4,921
Sunday Post - 35,183
The National - 3,555
Sunday National - 4195
Have you noticed how we needed a referendum to join and leave the EU but the Tories joined us into the CPTPP without even a vote in Parliament?
For the last few days I've had close insight and interaction with the media and to say they as a group are a strange bunch is a massive understatement. With the exception of a very small group of individuals I've never had the displeasure of working with such an obnoxious, egotistical, moaning faced and greedy bunch of ******s in my life. The problems are not just at the top of the media branch, it filters down like diarrhoea all the way to the bottom.
I don’t think that’s a question with any value, since it clearly isn’t going to happen and Jack has no power to make it so.
A better question is does the media contribute positively to our national culture? My pseudo Marxist take is that it’s a device to keep the rich and powerful in power by limiting the parameters of debate and dumbing down culture. Consumption over the internet means content is ever more hysterical and divisive because the psycho analytics show that’s what people click on. They would argue they are just reflecting what the public want.

Modi playing a very similar game in India, interestingly. “All those <insert ethnic group to demonise> are all after raping your women” has been a fascist trope since, well, ever.
The only difference between her and Goebbels messaging on this is that his Reich Ministry of Enlightenment and Propaganda hadn’t just released a study making clear child grooming and exploitation is on the rise across ALL groups and ethnicity is unimportant to the debate, as the Home Office has done.
I’m delighted Starmer is making this exact point about it not being an ethnicity issue, on LBC now.

It's not just them on twitter. I noticed an English local Councillor had been in some sort of scandal last week. I can't remember if it was sex or money.
There was no mention in the original article which party he was a member of and pages of Google searching didn't bring it up either; plenty on him just no party mentioned which I thought was odd. I ended up searching for his election result on the Council website. You'll never guess what? He was a tory!
If similar is happening elsewhere in the media it would suggest something much more sinister than a few MPs being less than transparent.
All of the tories standing in our local council elections have no evidence they are standing as Tory candidates in their literature, ones even printed in black and white only whereas previously it was all union Jack's and blue in evidence.
Going to get routed anyway as managed to abstain in a vote to keep the only swimming pool in his own constituency open to stay onside with the tory dominated district councils wishes.
