Why isn't he being given a chance or being played in any reserve/development games?
He wasn't great against Kelty but is he really that bad?

Genuinely what did he do wrong against Kelty?
What I remember from being at the match is he was the only one who reacted to the short corner, screaming at Boyle to close it down.
He couldn’t save the header.
Not saying he’s good but can’t remember any errors. It was a while ago so who knows.
Edit: I just rewatched the highlights he was poor coming for one Scott Allan corner but held the other two shots. He’s got to be worth another chance if not him, Boruc.

I honestly just don’t believe for a second he can be worse than Bursik.
Bursik may well be a better keeper when he’s brimming with confidencr, who knows, but the version of Bursik that we’re seeing as so bad that I genuinely think we could pluck any goalie out of the professional leagues and they’d do better.

I remember him looking very very clumsy at Kelty and coming away disappointed in him. I don't remember him being that bad for the goal though.
If we replaced Bursik with him tonight I won't have any complaints, but if it transpires he's just as ***** at least we can absolve Dave Gray of blame for sticking with Bursik so long. Unless he signed either of them himself that is.

Plucked from League 2 in England and has barely played a game in 5 YEARS!
I think that gives us a fair insight into his ability.
Whoever is responsible for Bursik and him should be out of a job.

I know Boruc lost a lot of goals when on loan at Arbroath (but then the whole team was very poor) but the few times that I've seen him then I definitely rate him above Bursic. I know that's a low bar but I think he'd be an improvement and deserves a chance anyway.

The suggestion seems to be it was Samson’s doing with regards to the GK signings.
Gray wanted him in as his staff so he has to shoulder the blame if the people who chooses to work with him are unable to do their job properly.

If he's terrible then he's terrible. The keeper we have now has been terrible so we aren't really any worse off.
Bursik came with a better pedigree and it may be more his head has gone rather than lack of ability but regardless he is all over the place right now, making bad decisions and that is only going to worsen as the errors mount.
The only argument I could make for sticking with Bursik is that if we had to revert back to him then being dropped might impact his confidence even more. I don't believe for a second we won't address the situation in January though so it's worth risking the change imo. We have Boruc as well; I saw him a couple of times for Arbroath and didn't particularly rate him but reports from the development team seem generally positive so that may be the best solution.

He made one mistake at Kelty iirc
He came for a cross, missed it and Kelty hit the bar.
Bursik has done much worse. Even one the other night that’s not been discussed - near the end when it was 3-1 mulligan got to the bye line and cut a cross back along the ground, Bursik dived outward to try and collect it and missed it completely. Thankfully no Dundee player was there for a tap in

I'm not having a go at you or saying you're wrong or whoever told you is lying. But one of my biggest bug bears at the moment with this football club is the lack of accountability across the football department on who is actually building this squad anymore as everything is shifting player to player staff to staff.
Who signed the keeper? Wasnae me it was him.
Okay did he also scout the centre half then? No that was the guy we let go of last week.
Okay I assume the manager wanted Mykola back then? Actually that was the CEO because he's pals with the agent.
What did the Director of Football do? Not sure because the owner also does things too.
What did the Black Knights do? Nothing because we didn't answer the phone until a few weeks ago but now they're here for January.
The merry-go-round of accountability in recruitment is absolutely infuriating and it's like it is designed to protect everyone from scrutiny, instead it just makes me more angry with everyone and want them all gone asap.
Apologies for the rant.

So far this summer we’ve been told Samson signed the goalies, Gray specifically wanted Triantis and Myko, Malky Mackay has been on here claiming Ian Gordon is still meddling and none of this is his fault whatsoever and we’ve had posters on here telling us we are signing Brian McDermotts targets despite the fact we had already acknowledged he wasn’t any good at what he was doing because Malky Mackay didn’t have the time to sort any of his own out. Oh, and Gray was going to be manager regardless of what Mackay thought and that was decided before he came in the door. Mackay had to put his name to it though and pretend it was him. Mackay was also hovering around the club and by complete coincidence we definitely did conduct a full review and he was the standout guy for his post.

The laddie Boruc was doing the sponsor’s presentation in Pioneers after the game.
He at least resembles a GK because he looks like he’s about 6’4” which should at least qualify him to be the next one to get a shot in goals. It was actually painful watching him taking a goal kick last night, struggled to make the halfway line, the cross in the first half where he flapped should have been the warning sign, if he isn't that good at coming for crosses then don't do it, let the defenders deal with it, boruc wont get a chance so unfortunately it needs to be bursik back in on Saturday. Sooner January comes the better and get them replaced

Yep - as spectacular as the shot is, if he stands up to it it’s a fairly simple save. He makes himself shorter and it’s almost as if he forgets where the crossbar is, as he tries to palm it over but he’s too low down to be able to do that.
It’s horrendously poor.

I agree with those saying that whoever signed the 2 goalies this season should be sacked for gross incompetence.

Surely at worst he's on a par with Smith ability-wise. His height will give him an advantage over Smith so at the very least he should be on the bench.
As I said previously, we should really be looking to get an out of contract keeper in now that's played at a decent level with a view to them playing until January at which point we sign a proper #1 and they revert to second choice.
We simply can't afford not to.

People guessing that Boruc should be as good as Smith and/or is bigger than him isn't really his 'deserving' his chance as JohnM1875 stated.
Truth is, Smith should not have played last night either as he's worse than Bursik- which management know already. If we continue with him we are utterly doomed.

I'm not guessing though. The games I've seen Boruc play for Hibs, in person, he's looked better than Smith and Bursik.
Bursik is better with the ball at his feet, I know that sounds ridiculous after the Dundee game and earlier blunders. But Boruc looks a decent keeper from the few games I've seen him play.
Why isn't he being given a chance or being played in any reserve/development games?

I know stats aren’t everything, but save % over a whole season tells you a lot. Big sample size. Best in Scotland last season were Roos at Aberdeen who left to join a club in Italy, Will Dennis at kilmarnock and Mitov at St johnstone. The eye test seemed to back up the stats, i remember thinking Dennis and Mitov looked the best keepers id seen at ER and i wish we had them. Obviously Aberdeen invested in Mitov when Roos left and is doing well by all accounts this season, and the obvious candidate for us for a proven commodity especially with the bournemouth connection, was Dennis. But it hasn’t happened.
By comparison, arguing about Bursik vsSmith vs Boruc is bald man amd comb territory really.

He simply cannot start (or even be on the bench) for us again. His positional sense and complete lack of command is not going to suddenly resolve itself - he looked like a rabbit in the headlights all night. How his signing could ever have been sanctioned is beyond me - based on his age he wasn't suddenly going to get better.
Bursic or Boric on Saturday and the new recruitment guy needs to find a keeper asap - ideally it would be a free agent to allow them to come in earlier than Jan but if not it needs to be first week in Jan.

Gray is writing his own death warrant as it matters not a jot who scouted these two clowns or even who got them to sign on the dotted line.
Obviously Marshall and Samson would have been in on all the discussions led by Mackay but Gray is the manager and to allow this situation to accumulate when it's incredibly obvious how bad the back up goalie performs is a complete dereliction of responsibility.

To be fair to Johnson he's played 11 out of 14 league games so far and was dropped for the last three. Not saying I'd have him in currently but he's doing what we need at the moment which is learning the trials and tribulations of senior football.

We can't recall him until January at the earliest as it is outside of the transfer window so we couldn't register him and even then it would depend what the deal agreed with Airdrie was whether we have a clause that allows a January recall.

He reminded me of Tony Caig. A guy who just looked like he had no business as a pro keeper.
Everything he did just looked poor. One good save aside it was a nervy performance throughout with one absolute howler and one really should be saving that thrown in to cost us 2 points.
A desperate situation that needs addressed. Hopefully we have a keeper lined up and the papers can be signed, sealed and delivered the minute the window opens.

He could definitely go down an excuse route re the other night if he wanted to - either rustiness having played so little football in recent years, or adapting to playing at a higher level than he has before.
As regards the other night - you could definitely put the flapped cross to either of those and their third was certainly a clean strike.
Irrespective of all of that - to come back from it a few days later with a strong performance shows a decent bit of grit. I’m pretty chuffed for him. It can’t be exactly easy to be a Hibs goalkeeper right now so playing a role in a clean sheet and win should mean he can be happy with his work tonight.

Not recently but he's played around 50 times for Nottingham Forest, mainly in the English Championship I think.
A problem for him was that he stuck around the club for so long without getting too much of a look in as Forest signed expensive goalie after goalie and also ran with three keepers at the club. General opinion was that he was a good back-up keeper at that level. He also saved Forest from relegation to League Two on one notable occasion with a couple of wonder saves. I think he's probably better than he has shown so far at Hibs but he really needs games.

Funnily enough I’ve just had a look at his wiki page… the fact that he’d been at Forest for so long and had played a decent number of games for them had totally passed me by.
I knew he’d been a second choice at Stockport (a decent Stockport team tbf) and that he’d played some non league but I had no idea about the Forest bit.
It does surprise me a bit tbf - mainly because whenever I watch Championship or league 1 football there does seem to be a huge importance played on physical attributes and characteristics. Smith doesn’t seem to have the size, strength or imposing physical appearance that would go with playing in goal for an English club in the top few leagues there. Somebody cruelly said at the Aberdeen game that he looks a bit like somebody’s dad has come along for a game to help out - whilst that’s both extreme and unfair, I sort of get the point.
Anyway - delighted he had a good game yesterday. Long may it continue.
And maybe we’ve got him wrong? Maybe rather than a “career number 2/3” he’s been chomping at the bit to get a first team opportunity - and he’s now got one?

Let’s not make fools of ourselves and pretend that either of our goalkeepers are good enough. A safer pair of hands between the sticks is essential. The confidence of the defence hinges on this. I’d make it priority, even ahead of assertive midfield leader and striker at Christmas.

Yes, he was with Forest for over 20 years, signing as a schoolboy for his local-ish club's academy. I think he made the mistake of staying there too long because I don't feel he was ever going to come back as a first choice after being loaned here and there. Stockport have money and I'm guessing are well covered in the keeper position. He's still 29 so has a few years to impose himself somewhere.
I've watched him play for Forest and he was actually pretty decent. General concensus among fans would be that he's a steady enough shot-stopper but that his distribution whilst playing as a sweeper-keeper could improve. Maybe could be a bit better at commanding his area. He is actually 6ft 1in but perhaps isn't as strongly-built as some goalies, quite athletic though.
The game against Aberdeen was always going to be a problem for him. He'd doubtless have been a bit nervous with the spotlight on the goalie position at Hibs and with such a lack of games and that certainly came to pass.I do think a few games will improve him if given the chance. He's not necessarily the answer to Hibs goalkeeper ills but I feel he can do a job through to January and see where that takes him and Hibs.

I would think yes it will be … but we also bring in a goalie that improves us .. not easy though … who finds and recommends another goalie is the key. Up to Jordan to now show he can get to the level that anyone coming in won’t just step in to the position. Onwards and upwards for us all hopefully.

Agree. Would like to see us to get a new proper number one keeper and send Bursik back either way in January.
I don't imagine Smith will be a long term answer but he is ours and we'll need to find out either way if he can polish himself up into a starting keeper for us or even be an acceptable number 2 that we can bring in when needed. The issue is when Celtic are on their game, no one in this league can live with them. Smith will have to have a 100% concentration for the full game as will the rest of the team, as the majority of the game will no doubt be in our half.
The pressure from the KO will be relentless.
I'm in no doubt we'll get beat by probably one of the best Celtic sides in a while, but if we can keep it difficult for them and keep our shape, and if we are clinical with any breaks we do get, then there is always that sliver of hope :agree:

Shots on target and balls into his 6 yard box will show him for what he is, a very poor keeper.

Didn’t realise that he had played at that level and looking at some of the comments here thought he played for the Dog and Duck😄 No idea if he is good enough going forward but was fine on Saturday

Some really good saves in there. Bursik must never play for us again, his mistakes v Celtic and Dundee that cost us goals are as bad as any mistakes a keeper has ever made for Hibs. On that basis Smith should keep the gloves until at least the transfer window.

My worry with that is he got the bulk of his games a good long time ago now, 2017. As you say one legendary (Conrad logan-esque?) performance saving Forest from relegation. Since then he's barely played first team football. I'm a happy clapper type and will get behind whoever has the gloves, but it still feels like a dice roll. I'd feel much happier with someone who has plenty games under his belt.
Edit-That triple save against QPR in the video was a bit special, to be fair!

Bursik and Smith are terrible goalkeepers.
Bursik has zero awareness of what is going on around him, doesn’t command his area and, in general terms, fails to inspire.
Smith has zero awareness of what is going on around him, doesn’t command his area and, in general terms, fails to inspire.
I’d hate to be playing in front of either of these duds.
Without a ‘steady’ goalkeeper we are in serious danger of going down.
Priority in January has to be a decent keeper.

I’d feel much more confident with Bursik in goals than Smith. Smith has made the exact same mistake as you refer to in both games he’s played this week - he’s just got lucky that they didn’t cost us. He’s sadly absolutely nailed on to be at fault for multiple goals on Saturday which will put us straight back to square one. Bursik is at least capable of making some good saves and for example kept us in the game at Ibrox earlier in the season - I’ve seen nothing from Smith to suggest similar

I had a drink with two Forest fans last night and their thoughts were that they really like Jordan Smith and felt he didn't get much of a chance at times.
Such is the nature of football nowadays that players can be judged after as little as one game. We have to look at the reality of the situation though in that Jordan Smith had not played for a long time and there was a huge amount of pressure on him after the previous keeper's various clangers when he came into the team against Aberdeen. What followed was a patchy, to say the least, performance although it was noticable he did not offer those reasons as an excuse but simply got his head down and improved in the next game. What followed yesterday was a very good and sound performance in my humble opinion.
Understandably, people are saying he'll maybe do until Hibs can get someone else in. He needs more games and don't be surprised if he wins a lot more people over with his performances though, and becomes the goalie that Hibs need. That performance yesterday was a heck of a lot more like the times I've seen him playing well for Nottingham Forest in the English Championship.

Much improved from Aberdeen but needs to cut out the fumbles - had one v Motherwell too but got away with it.

Think it was
Was the incident in question a fumble? . I actually thought when the ball came across he could just barely get a hand to it , he could have let it go but he couldn’t take the chance on who was coming in behind him , just unfortunate it landed at Scales as it could easily have landed at a Hibs player too , his reaction to it and other situations was very good though…
One of the things I liked about Smith too was the incident where Miller was trying to block the ball and ended up on the ground , both players acknowledged there efforts when the ball went out in a “ well done you “ moment. Even when Newell was unfortunate in scoring the own goal again Smith reacted by going to him right away..
Been impressed with Smith so far not only for his goalkeeping but also for the character he’s been showing too . I’ve been saying for awhile now that I think there’s a good togetherness amongst the players .

I don’t think there’s any doubting we need to sign a keeper better than both of them. Hes been an improvement on Bursik though and Grays insistence to keep Bursik in the team for so long is a huge part of the reason we find ourselves where we are.

That would be my thoughts too. One of the worst I have seen when the ball is stuck on top of him but does well enough with shot stopping. I think he is simply too small to have the goalkeeper advantage at cross balls. An improvement over the last glove filler though

Fair play to him he's stepped up when we need it the last few games. It has made a big difference having someone who can actually save a shot playing in goals (who would have thought??).
All that being said, he is not the answer long term and a first choice goalkeeper should still be right at the top of our list of requirements in January.

He’s 6’1 so basically average height for a keeper. Coming for crosses is more about timing and coordination so i dont think if he was 6’6’ he’s suddenly making great takes. Hes just better at shot stopping and thats his strength. Leave the crosses to Rocky and O’Hora.

I'll bow to your keeper knowledge but one thing that is clear is his timing and co-ordination are terrible when trying to collect or punch balls at full stretch under any pressure. He also doesn't seem to be able to get his own defenders out the way and he misses by so much he is often miles out of position for what comes next.
He has done OK and him coming in has coincided with a decent spell so don't want to be too harsh but I think teams that stick lots of crosses in will be wanting to test him and expecting success

The best keeper of probably the last 15 years at least at Hibs was hopeless with crossed, Marciano. Quickly realised he wasn't good and just stayed on his like and trusted himself to make the save, which he did more often than not.
I think it could be lack of gametime over Smiths career causing his indecision. A lot of coming out for high balls is timing and confidence. Every keeper at a decent level can catch a cross, it's about committing and making the right decision to stay or go, I think with more games(or maybe I hope?) Smith can learn to stay on his line let the defence deal with it. For a guy in his late 20s he hasn't played a lot of football, although he was at one point very highly rated at Forrest if I remember right.

Surely he's not 6'1, he looks 5'10 maximum to me I had a look at the squad pic and he is taller than Cadden and a good bit taller than Obita. Bursik and Smith do appear to be of tip toes though. So he is probably taller than he looks but in the day of the 2m taller centre half and target man who are also athletic he comes up short so to speak. I do think Hibsbolloh is probably right. Looking at how far away he is when he comes for the ball a few extra inches of height won't make much odds

I recall Willie Miller once saying on Radio Scotland that it doesn't matter that much whether a keeper is good at coming out for crosses. The important thing is that the central defenders know what he's going to do, so if he's not good at it he stays on his line and leaves it to them. The understanding comes from a lot of games together,

Cadden2 for me. Not only has he showed he has quality, a bit of desire and can both score and create but he is pretty consistent. Players we can rely on are near non-existent
Tbf we should be very happy with what we’ve got from Cadden2 and Jordan Smith. They might only have been expected to be peripheral players but have done well, Ekpiteta too.
Bursik, O’Hora, Myko and Kwon should all really have been main players making big contributions for us but all have disappointed in different ways.

Not got enough presence about him for me.
Thought he did well enough today, particularly early on. But he’s never really going to come and take the pressure off when balls are getting rattled in to the box. There is always just something in the back of the mind that we’re not overly secure. 10x better than Bursik though.
For me, all I care about is my keeper making saves, and Smith has done that regularly (Aberdeen game aside). I actually don't think he was bad at coming for balls whipped into the box today either.
But I asked for folks opinion so appreciate yours :aok:
For me, a GK was number one priority this window, after Smiths performance the past few weeks I've changed my mind and I'd happily keep him and spend the money in other problem positions.

WithoutvSmiths contribution today we likely wouldn't have the 3 points.simple as that,

he was brutal , flapping at anything that came in to the box we definitely need an upgrade.
Brutal is a bit harsh but people suggesting he should be our number one for the rest of the season baffles me to be honest.
To his credit he made a very good save early on and a good one a while later. Beyond that he spent the rest of the game flapping about at anything they swung over and lacks any presence in goal what so ever.
Thankfully we didn’t have to suffer seeing him try to het his goal kicks over the half way line today so that also helped.

Surely he's not 6'1, he looks 5'10 maximum to me
Wiki has him at 185cm 6’1’, transfer market 183cm, which is 6’ and a half.
Maybe he stoops when he walks :greengrin
I remember Iker Casillas was described as 5’11 when he played but hes now described as being 6’1!! Not sure how thats possible. Course it’s definitely an advantage to be tall in most situations although there was some decent analysis on Fraser Forsters inability to get down quickly enough low and to either side because of his height, so it goes the other way too.

Tbf he was signed as backup and he’s defo a reasonable backup goalie. He can stop a shot which makes him a massive upgrade on Bursik and although he’s not a goalie who’s at the level we need for a number one Id keep him around if he’s happy to be here.

Surprised no comment about his performance on Saturday.
Seemed to have a competent performance & appears to improve with every game.

Agree, he had a good game, long may that continue, he definitely gives the defence a much more solid look

Thought he was solid, unlucky with the Aberdeen goal as well, takes a big nick off Rocky.
The save he made when the wind caught the ball was really solid.

Really like him good confidence and attitude about him. Speaks well in the press conference after sheep win
Another solid performance today, was unlucky not to get a clean sheet.

I was completely wrong about him, and get the feeling my relegation predictions may have turned out to be classic .net bedwetting.
