No , we can’t and we probably wouldn’t stop a young lad from a dream move like that either . I suppose all we can do is get a bit of money upfront and install a good sell on percentage in the deal in the hope he makes it and moves for big money in the future.

Johnson was on trial at City a good few years ago, can't be mad at the youngsters if they move to EPL teams, to much of an opportunity to turn down.

Will be lots more from other Scottish teams I'd imagine English teams are keeping their eye on.

Is it not because English sides are not entitled to sign up EU youth players now, because of BREXIT rules .

Yeah, that's right. English clubs are all over Scottish youth players now for that reason and because they want to swell their academies to sell later for Financial Fair Play reasons (I think these players represent pure profit).

It's a bit depressing as bringing through young, homegrown players is one of the most exciting parts of following a team. Now they're all just being hoovered up before they even play.

Could the SFA do what they do in South America and stop cross border transfers, or certainly the ability to transfer registration, until the player turns 18? If they were to do that through UEFA or whatever is needed would that make English clubs less likely to buy the players at 16 if they can’t get them in the door until they are 18? At that point they are on full time contracts if not hoovered up in advance.

It still feels like clubs are happy to let these youngsters go 'for the opportunity'.

This has really ramped up since Brexit and I'm struggling to think of many players who have thrived from moving down south. Doak has done well but he's an exceptional talent and being at Liverpool potentially held him back a little due to the lack of first team opportunities.

If it was my kid I'd want them to follow a similar route to Lennon Miller. I think there's a lot more to gain from playing mens football at our level than playing PL2 youth games.

I doubt it is possible to bring in any kind of rules, but you're right in saying Doak is the exception rather than the rule, and even then, the majority of his game time has been on loan in the championship. Ethan Laidlaw is an example. Struggling to start for the Under 21s at Brentford never mind the first team. That's not to say he won't come good, but would he have had more opportunity at Hibs between then and now. Probably, even although our striking options at this exact moment, this season are relatively good.

Is it cross boarder or is it that they can't sign outside of South America? I think that's our problem, because we're in UEFA we can't stop a kid at 16 moving to England because they are also UEFA.

2 Goals in 233 minutes play and also had a brief appearance in their u21s. I hope we have a sell on as it likely won't take much for it to be worth more than the fee given how crazy transfers are down there. No idea why a club hasn't come in for Cleland as he looks an even better prospect to me

Think he is still 15..... but yes EPL clubs still hoovering up talent. But if we are shown as being somewhere you can get good coaching and exposure via youth / academy ranks we will keep attracting good youngsters and so more fees as well as hopefully keeping some to make 1rst team and bigger fees.

I know rules probably difficult to implement but would be good if players could not move till 18 or be loaned to parent if bought before

If we are getting fees like this for a 15 year old goalie, it’s fantastic news, I don’t mind youth players moving, if we get fees like this to reinvest into the first team.

I’m not sure we’ll see another Doig come through and sold for big money in today’s world. He would have been snapped up at 16 or so before making the first team. I also don’t think we’ll see any homegrown players come through that are special, like Doig, or any of the golden generation. Only possibility is if they are late developers that aren’t snapped up at 15 or 16.

Hibs seem to see the sale to English clubs as another revenue stream rather than something to attempt to ward of and get them into our own first team. It’s not the approach I would like to take but I’ll not drone on about that more than all my other times.

Very difficult to know which 16 year olds are going to make it. Probably a good idea for Hibs to accept these fees. So far none have proved we made a mistake yet. Eventually one will but we can’t look at what the one individual was sold for but what we take in annually from selling these kids contracts.

Ryan Mallon, Rory Whittaker, Lewis Gillie, Joseph McGrath, Owen Calder, Logan Jimenez, Zach Bruce, Adam Buckley, Josh McDonald, Dean Cleland, Jamie McMurdo, Luke Davidson. Think Freddie Owens on loan at Civil Service is also on a pro deal.

There may be more but those are the ones I'm sure of

I'm really not sure tbh, we still have a batch of players from the previous years still waiting to make the breakthrough, but a very good season for the 18's this season.

Regarding Jimenez, i was wondering how he was scoring a few recently as when i asked about him a few months ago and from my google search he was listed as a CB on the transfer market website so interesting he's now playing as a ST.

I know it’s been asked before, but what’s the consensus in terms of Dean Cleland stepping up to the first team, and when?

My knowledge of the youth set up is pretty much limited to this thread but the amount of goals he seems to be scoring seems pretty exceptional.

Surely he’s earned a shot at pre season, or the final game of the season if things are mathematically resolved in terms of league position.

Jimenez has played all over the pitch including full back, but with Josh landers leaving , he is now playing Centre forward, with Cleland just off, this is also helping Cleland.
They were fantastic last night especially the second half, the hibs midfield was under pressure in the first half, because our 2 wing backs were miles up field.

I’ve watched the young players, for a long time, and Dean Cleland is the best goal scorer, I’ve watched, better than landers, young, laidlaw, occonner.
His attitude on the pitch, is brilliant, he never stops running, he’s quick, he’s good in the air, and he always seems to be in the right place.
Hes not the biggest, but is strong, however he will definitely have trained with first team, and David gray/Mcgregor will no when he’s ready.
My only frustration, was when McKirdy was getting minutes, and I rated as one of the worst forwards to have played for hibs, That was the time to try him out.
I know he had health issues, but he was rank before this was uncovered.
I wish him all the best at Bromley, but he was smaller and weaker than Cleland.

Football has moved on , English teams can’t recruit young players from Europe now, since Brexit
So they are offering ridiculous money for Scottish young players, to fill their teams, £265,000 for a 15 year old goalkeeper is madness.
It’s actually helping hibs, and if we get sell ons , fantastic.

I don’t disagree just seems a change of strategy/focus. Maybe the club should focus on the young ones with a view to selling on at 16 instead of the pretence that someone might break into our first team.

Under the clubs current ethos, we would be as well keeping the youngsters on until they are 16 or 17. Then if they’ve not been bought by an English club at that point release them. Do away with the overheads of running under 18s and 19s teams when we’ve no actual intention to try and bring players through it would seem.

Sweep up the players at a younger age, put the best coaches on those teams, potentially less full time contracts to those over 17?

Not sure of the specifics but we have people in charge of all that.

Yeah - if that’s where we see value that would make sense. Certainly doesn’t seem to be many players who have been made first team ready and those that might have been eat marked are now being swayed to go elsewhere before they’re 16/17. Potentially that decision is made easier with there being no clear pathway to the first team.

Would be no harm in a new deal if both parties are interested, the goal record don't lie at that level and you watch him pretty much every week with great reports.

Could only assume SDG don't want to throw in youngsters in such a vital season with it starting terrible and potentially ending great.

I'm hoping Oscar can push on next season after getting good reports from his loan deal this season.

Sorry 6-2

The final score was 7-2,
Killie took the lead on 6’ Logan got one back shortly after, Killie then regained lead, but Rory Whitaker levelled again but Deano got Hibs third right on half time, as said all 5 goals were headers. Into the second half and Lewis Gille got Hibs 4th shortly after the restart. Logan then got his second before two late goals from Deano, the final one in added on time. That was his 38 goal of the season 28 in competitive games.

This was another great performance, against a very big and physical Killie side. The result could have been more as the were at least another four or five chances put wide or just over. Killie still third but 7points behind and having played a game more.

That is now 20 goals in the last three league games, all against top six opposition.
Still a we debate about the next game, it looks like it could be Rangers away on Tuesday afternoon, and then it is up to Cormack Park next Friday afternoon against The Dons. The Rangers game is the one postponed from a couple of weeks ago.

Rangers are still top by two points but Hibs have a much better GD. The last game of the season is at HTC against Rangers, some people talking about moving it to ER, but I think they should keep it at HTC, where we have been doing so well.

Rangers are still top by two points but Hibs have a much better GD. The last game of the season is at HTC against Rangers, some people talking about moving it to ER, but I think they should keep it at HTC, where we have been doing so well.

A great night in the new Terrace Suite in the Famous Five Stand tonight. First look at the FF bronzes too and they are beautifully done and presented. The night ran without a hitch and was really well attended with even Scott Brown making an unexpected appearance. The facilities at ER these days really are top class.

No surprises who won the U18 POTY

Our two centreforwards , Clelland and Jimenez are absolutely tearing defences apart.

I was at the Academy End of Season Awards last night in thr FF Behind the Goals. Very good night and well ran.

Deano won the U18s player of the Year and Goal of the Season awards, not suprising but the Goals of the Season was a real team effort, sixteen passes right from the back and across the pitch befor Derano finished it of. The moment of the season was the first post split game against St Mirren where we played St Mirren and won 6-1.
It was also good toe see and hear from Malky Mackay, and there were a few former Academy Graduates there, Paul Hanlon, Lewis Stevenson and Scotty Broon.

Also good to hear that Deano has been training with the first team a few days a week.

He’ll probably follow the other standout young players and sign for an English Prem team before he plays for us. It’s just the way of it really. For most teams as well, that’s including Celtic and Rangers.

He might - that’s 2 or 3 that’ve done that now I think due to the Brexit rules making it easier for English teams to sign from Scotland.

If that’s the academy strategy then that’s good but I’ll be taking less interest in it if we’re never going to see any output other than a wee drop cash in the accounts.

I feel your frustration, but £400,000 in fees , plus sell ons, last 6 months, is brilliant money.

If we actually had a desire to do it, which we clearly don’t, then the natural pathway is to let Gayle retire and promote Clelland to that 3rd/4th striker next season despite in the short term that being a downgrade.

I think the likely outcome is to keep him playing at a level he’s far outgrown and then pat ourselves on the back at another successful season at youth level.

He’s relatively small in stature, but strong.
Hes fast, has 2 good feet, good dribbler, and is decent in the air.
His main attributes, are definitely his non stop running and energy, and he always seems to be in the right place.
However he obviously trains with the first team, and the coaching staff , will know if he’s ready, to play first team football.
He won’t be playing in front of gayle, Bowie, or Myko, he should have had a chance ahead of McKirdy.

I’m pretty sure it gets into, CL under 19s competition.
Last time a lot of our team, didn’t have competitive games , as they were too old to play under18, in Scotland, but played in the European youth league, that autumn.
However I think something has changed for next season, with talk of a Scottish under 19 league.
Could someone tell me if this is the case.

Ah well, fair dos then … we do seem to have a decent bunch of younger players though … one or two breaking through in next couple years would be good. Other teams are doing it, eg, Dundee, and we need to find that too. Well done though to the youngsters today 👍

With Hibs confirming that Friday's match is at Lochinch, I'm going to head through for this before taking in the Raith Rovers match at Hampden.

Wonder if The Rangers are going to try and make us play them away on a midweek making us play three games in a week

How many goals does he have for the season now?

Wonder why we didn’t loan him out in January. I hope it’s not because we prioritised trying to win the U18s league rather than half a seasons development wasted playing at a level he must be getting very little from.

He's only 17 so plenty of time still for that to happen next season.

According to Mo he'd scored 38 after the Kilmarnock game and he has scored 6 in the last 4 games - so 44 now
