Played Baberton Seniors today. Bit of a Hibs fest. Graham Harvey looks like he’s gonna win and currently top of the pile. Bumped into Alex Miller too who was also in the field. Of course I was also there. :flag::flag:

Playing a Seniors tie at Liberton last week, I managed a hole in one on 11. Second one in just over a year with none in the previous 50 years
Funny old game :greengrin
Helped me to victory on the 19th after being 3 down after 4

Congratulations and thanks for the encouragement. I got my first last year after 60+ years, so looks like I can look forward to another this year. Or does it not work like that?

Oh I'm no playing sadly.

Trying to get round as many of the top 100 as possible in the next few years, it seems Loch Lomond would kill that accomplishment stone dead stuck at 99.

Pity. It’s on my bucket list too but sadly I think it’s not going to happen either.

Isn't Ardfin the most difficult one - think its for multi millionaires only.

There's a guy at our club attempting to play all of the Scottish courses he recently hit the 550 mark but he told me Ardfin may be the killer blow

Anyone can play Ardfin. You just have to stay on the estate. It does cost a whopping £1500 to stay over plus your £500 per day green fee. You just email and book.

Think it’s Skibo Castle you’re thinking of, ridiculously private millionaires playground.

That's some itinerary!!!

I'm having a mid season break from competitive golf due to a form slump. Yesterday I went to the Braids for a video lesson which identified a few things I need to work on but thankfully no major surgery is required at this stage. 😅

Trying to complete a Scottish Top 100, and whilst most are achievable there are a few notable exceptions - Loch Lomond, Skibo Castle, The Renaissance and probably Ardfin (too expensive). I'll be replacing these out of the list with Portrush, County Down, Ballybunion and Lahinch at some point in the future. So almost a hybrid 100! But trying to clear the ones closer to me first, that I haven't played before. 4 in Edinburgh alone plus the east coast courses and a couple in Fife.

Is there anyone on here that could sign me on at any of the following? Happy to reciprocate at Broomieknowe of course or if anyone wants to pair up for anywhere.

Royal Burgess, Bruntsfield Links, Monktonhall, Mortonhall, North Berwick, Gullane 1, Lundin Links, Blairgowrie, Luffness, Kilspindie, Ladybank, Archerfield Dirleton, Monfieth, Longniddry, Glenbervie.

Currently at 10/100 with Old Course, Elie, Archerfield Fidra, Gullane 2 & 3, Southerness, Leven Links, Roxburghe, Glen and Cragielaw done.

Yeah, very much a subjective thing. I just found one on Google and went with that. There's the obvious ones like Turnberry, Muirfield etc all in the top 10, most of those listed there are in the 50-100 range.

Cant help either I’m afraid but if you do Facebook then check out the “Golf in Scotland” page. They do both a regular and seniors (champions) tour. Excellent value for money and almost certainly a chance to bag a course or two in your 100 through them.
Best of luck.

I volunteered at the Scottish Open last year and all of the volunteers received an invitation to play The Renaissance in September as a thank you. I believe same thing happened the year before.

Very enjoyable and fantastic facilities.

Might be a way to tick that one off your list.

I would certainly look to see if any of those courses are running opens. Very much a cost effective way of playing them.

Golf in Scotland as Lex said above is also a great deal to play bucket list courses.

I did Largs, Downfield, Panmure and Castle Stuart last year through it.

We put our names down for marshalling this year and we never heard a thing back, but that would have included a free round. If you've any more details on how to volunteer, I can make sure I'm on the ball for it next year. I've also heard Scottish Golf make TRC offer times out to SG members, but it's not been announced for this year yet I don't think.

Yeah, Opens are gonna largely be my best bet. I have Muirfield booked for next May, and got a deal for Turnberry Ailsa and Robert the Bruce for end of May through Links Golf Cup. It's likely this will take me several years to get anywhere near complete especially including the Ireland trip but that's completely fine.

I was playing an open with a couple of non members. The guys in the desk running it seemed friendly and the competition was well run.
There’s a reasonable practice area. A short course and the championship course is just that . It’s a really good test and was in very good condition.
I’m sure there’s a decent young girl plays out there too so I’m guessing the coaching is good as well. Put it this way if I was relocating to the west end of Dunfermline / Crossgates or even the east end if not anywhere in Clackmannanshire I think that’s where I’d be joining.

I invested in a brand new set of custom fitted Ping i230 irons at the start of season and vowed that these would be the last irons I would buy.

Five months down the line and I'm now thinking "maybe not" so never say never!

It's a friggin stupid and infuriating game in any case - but I love it.

I broke my driver the other week in the nets, never notice the mat was set up for a left hander and hit the metal post. :faf:

I replaced the shaft of my ping G410 with a stiff shaft instead of my normal regular, wow what a difference. I always had a draw that i needed to be wary of, setting the ball out right and bringing it back in.

Now i just need to aim it down the middle and there it goes. After years of not realising, i'm much better with a shaft that does not have a bit of whip. :greengrin

Random golf question...why have some pro players started wearing hoodies? They seemed wholly impractical for golf, potentially interfering with your swing or getting sopping wet if it rains. And you'd surely never actually put the hood up to play golf?

They get. Paid a **** load of money for doing so. Getting old duffers to buy sweaters and polos is easybut it’s a n ever decreasing market. There’s a whole new generation of younger players to entice to the game and the manufacturers reckon it’s the way to go for increased sales and profits.

Must be good. Was actually playing with a guy from the Johnston area yesterday at Cochrane castle. He was a full member at Nairn and went up one weekend a month to play. Lucky enough to play Dundonald on Sunday there. Cracking links course and very friendly staff and welcoming clubhouse.

Definitely a course for keeping it in play - any further than the first cut and you'll be lucky to find a ball.

Booked it through the Golf in Scotland boys.

Loved it!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed Archerfield yesterday although I shudder to think what I actually scored. I seem to spend half the round splashing out from bunkers and the other half looking for lost balls in the tiger rough.

Its a fantastic place to play golf and you feel totally divorced from the outside world for a few hours at least. If ever I have a spare few million quid to play with then I may contemplate membership.

Yesterday was a bad day.

My faithful Ping G400 driver which I've had for 6 years literally came apart at the seams when the head came away from the shaft , thankfully nobody in the vicinity was injured. And before anyone asks - a temper tantrum was not involved!

I've been told that it can be glued back together again but somehow or other I have doubts if it will perform as well as it has for me over the last six years.

Played Trump Aberdeen the other week. What a place! Couldn't have been any luckier with the weather for the time of year, sun was out and flat calm.

The course is sensational, first 9 for me better than the back 9 despite the more imposing dunes on the back 9. What did annoy me was it was overly difficult for no reason. I get the rough being tight and long, that is the way its meant to be but the amount of unnecessary bunkers on the course either in the landing area for drives or for the lay up areas for longer par 5's.

Challenging enough for me on a calm day, any bit of wind and could be close to unplayable for an average golfer.

The steak pie at the halfway house was worth the trip on its own!

I've played either Gullane number 3 or the Glen in North Berwick quite a lot in the past. They tend to be much cheaper than their more celebrated neighbours. Gullane can get a bit trickier to get onto when the days are shorter and there are a lot of people wanting to get out at the same time but number 3 almost always seems quieter. It's shorter than the other ones but still a proper links course and the greens hold up brilliantly throughout the winter. There will normally be winter and twilight deals available that help further with the price.

I’m taking a couple of weeks off to golf myself to death around that time.
It should include a wee seniors Aviemore swing the same week as Roxburghe Seniors. Golf in Scotland on the Tuesday at Blairgowrie on the way up. Planning three days playing Spey Valley, Boat of Garten and Carrbridge back to back the end of that week.
The previous week it’ll be the Lothians Seniors and two Golf in Scotland events at Glenbervie and Auchterarder before Roxburghe regular on the Friday.
I’ll need to get back to work for a rest.

I also use Golf empire. If there’s nothing on at home I usually find somewhere that has an open and pop along.

If I lived up that way (and didn’t have young kids and a business taking up all my time and money) then I’d definitely like to play there regularly.

Lundin decent. Sone good hokes on it. Also sone very average holes and one where there doesn’t seem to be a fairway for the hole and the adjacent fairway gives you a very poor angle into a narrowish green. It’s better than its neighbour Leven in my opinion but not sure of the membership rates for either. I know it sounds daft but if Leven is a good bit cheaper than Lundin I’d probably sign up at Leven.

Edit- £90 difference. Lundin Probably worth the extra to be honest. Depends how much you plan to use it I suppose.

Lundin is in better condition than leven due to the volume of traffic through the course each day. Having played both allot id say Leven is the better and truer links course but Lundin is better condition wise. There are more blind holes at Lundin and y3 holes up and along the road that are not links what so ever.

Lundin has an 8/900 membership fee where as leven doesn’t but depending which club in leven you join it’s comps every 2nd Saturday as it’s alternative. Both leven clubs and Lundin play a comp each year of the true old course leven 1-5 13-15 &18, Lundin holes 14-18 & 1-4

All fair enough. I would say that the three holes up by the road although not particularly links holes are good golf holes . An elevated green on a par three with the next a great driving hole with a tight green guarded with trees if your too far left and bunkering right ti a flat green you can’t really get a visual on with the par three down the hill all good. It’s a wee while since I’ve played Leven but other than 18 there aren’t many if any stand out holes. (Might be Ive had a howler round there and want to forget to be fair. 😂😂

Not that I know of.
We had a .net outing a number of years ago and despite it being a success a follow up never really happened. I think a lack of someone really driving it was the biggest hurdle.

Off to Belek for a week on Saturday with the Mrs and boy. 9 rounds of golf booked and can't wait to get back out there after a miserable winter here in Germany. We've either had 10 inches of snow or 2 inches of water covering my local course. Even the driving ranges have been closed because the ball collecting machine can't pick up the balls in this weather.

Lovely course.

I’ve only played it once, got my one and only eagle to date on the opening hole.

Was quite cool being 2 under with one played. The rest of the round ended up being absolute drivel, although I did win the longest drive that day, so certainly a day of highs and lows.

It's been a poor winter for the opportunity to play golf - even on the links courses. High winds, high tides spilling over on to the course and even the occasional days lost because of snow and ice.

It could be worse you could be a member inland. Mud n mats. To be fair our greens are rather splendid.
On a brighter note the Lothians Senior championship is live for entering. Monday 1st July at Kilspindie. If you’re a member of a Lothians club and 55 or over you’ll be hard pushed to spend a better £20.

That's a contentious point! My home Club is in the Borders but I'm also a member of a Club in East Lothian. I pay affiliation fees to both the Borders and the Lothians Golf Association but as my Home Club is in the Borders I'm not eligible to compete in an event such as the Lothians Seniors Championship. That seems grossly unfair as is having to pay 2 affiliation fees to Scottish Golf - apparently it's too complicated for their computer software to unravel! Aye, that will be right !!

Getting sick of parkland courses and the conditions for 6 months of the year.It is annoying. I still haven't played Dunfermline yet because every time I've been able to play its been shut or fairway mats at temp greens. I've paid for 2 months golf now and not hit a shot yet I've managed to play links courses. It's is annoying but what can they do? If they open they get slated and do more damage, if they don't, they get slated.

It's a victim of how **** the weathers been for the last few winters. This year has really got to me it just feels like it's constant rain.

I had a cracking game at Dunbar today on what was probably the best day weather wise of this horrendous winter.

Course was in excellent nick which is a great credit to the greenkeeping staff as they've had to cope with almost everything over the last few months.
The proposed new development has at last got off the ground and the contractors will be on site in the next couple of weeks.

As for the standard of my golf today, well its got to be said I've played better but our very competitive fourball game finished all square with lots of "incidents" throughout. 😄

Very lucky to be a member at Dunbar.

It has been in great condition over the winter with greens fabulous.

Been a lot of sea water and debris on the course over the winter, but the green staff have done a great job, particularly as they lost the head greenkeeper to Gullane.

This though has been the wettest winter I have ever known and my other courses Craigielaw & Duddingston have struggled a bit.

Worst course I have played all winter was The Roxburghe (which I really like as a course and is a great test of golf)

Played it at the start of the month and it was absolutely sodden and IMO should never have been open.

Played Craigielaw a couple of weeks back as part of the alliance and enjoyed it.

Dunno about the cold, but when I played it I had to start the ball just about out in the sea (on the hole that plays along the coast with trees by the beach on the left) to allow for the very strong wind and my strong slice… just to keep my ball findable!

The old course St Andrews. Take out the experience of playing it and possibly that experience of the 1st & 18th, as they’re not in themselves great holes, its rather bland and ordinary. The 11th is decent and could possibly make a case for the 7th too. The only real hole of note is the 17th. It’s only its history that keeps it on the rota for the open. Played it in horrible cold wet n windy weather too so the challenge was there. For the money I won’t rush back. Disappointed.

My brother played the Old Course backwards the other day.

I still like the old course as an Open course, in fact I think it comes alive at that level (like a few of the famous links courses). I like how differently it can play in different weather conditions - it can be torn apart whilst mild and be a bit of a killer when the wind blows. The wee loop up the far end of the course is a great place to watch various groups come and go. Over the course there are a few shorter par 4s that can be hit, some very tough holes as well, with a few "can't go right" holes on the way home that can be very interesting when the wind blows.

I'm not a great golfer but I'd love to play it one day - and I expect I'd be quite underwhelmed by the experience.

Don’t get me wrong Smartie it a great experience. If you look at it from a purely golf test though it’s a fairly bland course. It’s the history and feeling of strolling down 17 & 18 that makes it worthwhile. There always an audience too. It’s as close to feeling crowd pressure as you’ll get. Finished bogey bogey. :greengrin

Where did you tee off from on that hole? Do you have to "cut the corner" or are there more generous tees available?

Fairly forward tee. Still had to cut it a bit to get a better angle but no going over the old railway shed. A left to right shot wasn’t a problem as the wind was humming off the sea all day. Missed the green right and played a worldly to about three feet and duly missed it. 18 was a driver then three wood. We were as far back as possible off the tee and into said gale. Three putted it.

Kingsbarns a week on Friday. Now yer talking.Kingsbarns blows most courses here away. Expensive but I've played the OC and feel the same as you. Great history but dull.

Make of that what you will.

I played Kingsbarns under the then SGU scheme when members of Scottish Clubs were allocated so many tee off times at discounted rates. If I remember correctly I paid £75 and I thoroughly agree that its certainly the best of the relatively new courses.

I joined Pumpherston last month and really love the course, it's been closed a lot recently due to the sheer amount of rain we've had. I have completed 2 out 3 rounds to submit for my handicap.

The schedule for comps came out and I have to admit I'm surprised at the sheer amount of comps take place. In june for example unless you enter a comp, you can only play casual golf on 2 weekend days for the entire month. Now, I plan to play in the odd comp but casual by myself will always be my favourite. I hope there's scope to tee off early before they start as I won't usually have the time to wait until the end of the day.

Played Pumpherston a couple of times last year. Good offers on Golf Now.

Some excellent holes. The 2nd is "Augusta-ish" (in my mind anyway 🙂) and the Par 3, 13th is a cracker. The 16th is the "signature hole" but looks better from overhead than it does when you play it. Can't really see the island green till you get up to it.

Enjoy 👍

Cheers, aye the second is a difficult one, I have yet to get my head around how to approach it. I also agree about the 16th,if they took away the mounds protecting. The hole it would look a lot nicer. On the 14th you get a much nicer view of it.

Not much golf getting played. Deer Park shut 4 days last week and closed since Tuesday this week and review not until Monday.

Been a grim spring so far.

Dumbarnie is very good. An array of different tees for different abilities. I’ve played it twice and due to go back again this year. It’s still relatively new and some of the areas from just around the greens and to the tees need to mature a bit. Great layout and a good test. Nice clubhouse and vibe too. The green problems they had a year or so ago have disappeared. It’s first class.

That 16th still gives me nightmares.

Been a couple of years now but played pumphy a few times. Nice course.

I've played golf for many many years and been fortunate enough to play all the Open Championship Courses in the UK with the exception of the Old Course and the very recently added Royal Portrush.

I hear a lot of negative reports about St Andrews as a golf course but I suppose I really should make an effort to play it sometime soon - if only to sample the traditions and unique atmosphere of the home of Golf.

I've played it 4 times, though not since 1989. I've a cine film of my first ever tee shot - it went a long way straight, but about 5 foot off the deck.

When I viewed the film I realised I was so petrified of hacking up the tee I went up on my toes and hit the ball half way up. And yes, I dumped my second in the burn!

Absolutely tremendous. Fairways a bit soft in places but greens were really good. Fabulous course and experience. That’s my 6th time I think and it has never failed to deliver. 36 Stableford points with a couple of doubles on the front nine and 3 jiggles on 15,17 & 18 took a bit of the shine off but it was a difficult day. :greengrin

The carrick really is a very good track. Some terrific holes and some real nice scenery. The condition is its downfall. Really struggling in the wet conditions. It really could do with a good few Bob spent on drainage and conditioning. Real shame.

I tell you what. He may be a big orange face ******** but he certainly knows how to spend money. What a place he has turned Turnberry into. First class experience and that was on the wee course.
Two blobs on the first 4 holes then the game decided to turn up. A respectable 34 stableford points. I seemed to be scoring 3 pts or no points.

Really hoping Boab gets it done tonight. I always think he’s a wee bit fragile tho but he’s got the lead. If he doesn’t and plays poorly in the process it could set him back years.

Never in doubt 😂. I don’t think I have been more nervous watching a golfer but what a victory. He has played about 6 weeks in a row so will have some big decisions to make with his schedule. Memorial next week then the US Open. Travellers after that and then probably the Scottish Open. He can’t play in them all !

I think not playing this week is a mistake particularly if he’s heading back to Oban. The next three weeks over is the US Open bookended by two limited field signature events. Loads of earning potential but again more importantly enhanced fed ex and world ranking points. He could take a week or two off after that over here before the Scottish Open and Open. It also won’t do his homesickness much good either. Needs to tough it out.
Having said all that only he will know what his priorities are.

If he was to play memorial that would end up being 8 consecutive weeks on tour. Long long time.

Yeah I get that. Remember he missed a few cuts in that first 5 and these two signature events are the last two of the season so a good showing the next three weeks could keep/get him in next years signature events. What an opportunity especially when he’s obviously on top form. If he’s coming home for just one week on the piss it makes little sense to me. With a couple of jet lags to cope with too before the US Open week that is basically a week away preparation wise. Play the next three and come back for a two week break followed by two Scottish venues. I’m sure he knows what he’s doing mind.

I’ve never been to it at the Renaissance. Went when it was at Gullane but was off on a stag do mid afternoon so was a bit rushed.
I have been to the open at Muirfield down there too. Don’t drink so can’t comment in the bar etc.
Parking was well organised going in but a complete shambles on leaving as all the oarking attendants/stewards had long gone and it was a free for all with literally hundreds of cars trying to leave one small exit with no real roads to speak of just a huge field. It was literally hours trying to get out.
I went and spent quite a bit of time at the practice range and saw more golf shots there than anywhere.
Food was pricey.
enjoy.

I don’t know how he recovers from that. Complete bottle job.

3 out of the last 10 or so he’s thrown away. So many close calls. He had it in the palm of his hands and chucked it.

He also needs to get rid of Harry on the bag. Driver up the last was an insane choice.

However, he had a 2 foot putt for par and blew it. Same on 16.

It's mental, nothing else now. He won't win another because he can't get out his own head.

I left St Andrews Absolutely gutted but that was worse. I don't know how he recovers.
