So following my previous post. I went and got lessons. The guy is level 3 pga pro and he's superb.

I had my third lesson today. In just 3 lessons he's changed everything I was doing, to be fair he did say I wasn't that bad, I just needed corrected having never had a lesson. I'm now hitting the ball properly. I've not got much distance yet but its been 3 weeks since I started and it's like relearning.

I came home today after and I feel like I've unlocked the answers. I've still got miles to go but I feel like I'm in a position to build on and become a decent golfer.

Got 2 more lessons and then I think I'll book more because it's superb.

If someone could teach me how to Putt I'd be laughing.

Practice practice practice for the last 3 weeks and the improvement is massive. I'm going out this weekend so I'll report back with my new pro looking swing results. [emoji108]

Sent from my SM-G991B using TapatalkSo I played twice today, 18 in the morning at 18 in the afternoon. Different courses which I'd never played before. Played with a different playing partner than usual who plays off 13 and it helped as did my new learned controlled swing.

I shot 98 in the second round...not a big deal to many but I'm buzzing. I've broken 100! Now I have to follow it up with more of the same to prove its not a fluke.

So far lessons have been superb value. Got to keep practicing. I've set myself little goals and I'm slowly ticking them off.

I wish I'd found this game (as a player) when I was much younger.

I play off 8.2, and i would love to have a few lessons with my irons, but i'm worried that it will cock my game up.

I dont know if i could get much better than i currently play, sometimes coming in way under my handicap, and again a few over it.

At 62 i'm doing ok with what i have as a game, i just wonder if changing things would cause me more trouble than it's worth?

It's a bloody frustrating game at the best of times. :greengrin

Yes I know 9.8 is probably still 10 but I'm claiming it :greengrin

Good shooting, especially given the condition it's in (despite the dry weather, it's a fabulous track just now!).

I had a game of 2 halves at Lanark through the week - first 9 (well, 8) was attrocious - couldn't get a swing or rythym going at all - was flying at everything. By the time I managed to control myself and slow down, I played some imperious stuff from the 8th onward, coming back in -1 par golf! I putted like God.

I'm off 12 just now and playing quite well. Most of my golf is being played on the south coast as I'm down there with work which I'm finding a lot easier with the amount of roll you get. My home course is the carrick on Loch lomond and yesterdays stableford sums up amateur golf. 8 pars, 2 bogeys and 8 blobs 😂🤣

The new WHS handicapping system is resulting in many more variances in our handicaps that ever before.

Earlier in the in the season I went up point6, point4, point6 then point 2 in four consecutive rounds - a whopping 1.8 in no time at all.

Since then, I've been gradually chipping away at it and have come down from a high of 6.1 to my present 4.2. I'm sure the ba' will burst very soon though.

Started the season at 6.3 going to a high of 9.3 but at 7.9 right now. To be fair I’ve played a lot of golf currently at 63 counting rounds since March. You can go up fairly quickly but down just as fast.

I started on 10.0 really struggled when the season started and got as high as 13.4 in May. Now 9.8 but hope to get a bit lower at least

I think I’m fortunate to be able to post this tonight. Playing a medal round, I was about to play from the light rough when a player, coming in the opposite direction about 120 yds. away, and in full view of each other, played a shot which clipped my ear and thumped the ground about twenty yards behind me. I nearly sh*t myself. Approaching him, I sarcastically, suggested that a warning call might have been useful, to which he replied, swiftly passing me, ‘aye, sorry.’ Ar**hole!!!!

I was playing up at Carrbridge last month. Lovely wee 9 holer. First time round decent enough. Second time round one appeared at the 11th. Proper 100% off the hozzle as my sharpie mark from my ball imprinted beautifully on it. At that moment in time I had 8 balls in my bag. To cut a long story short by the time I was standing on the 18th I had one left. Every iron in the bag on every shot. I could not stop it. A two and a half hour drive down the road contemplating giving it up. I was in the tee at Craigmillar Park the next day at half ten and contemplating not going. Up early and a visit to the range at 8am hitting around 100 balls. Not a single one. Stupid game.

Played a local club I'm thinking off joining. First solo round since I started. Shot a 94 so my earlier joy of sub 100 has some foundation! That's my best round to date. I could have scored better but the greens were rapid and I really struggled with the pace.
The par is 72 so I was +22.

Range tomorrow and Monday. Lesson 5 on Wednesday.

It's coming together.

Is anyone local to Manchester who'd fancy a round?

Anyone ever been fitted at Scott gourlay?

Won a competition for £1000 worth of irons so decided to get fitted with Scott first, will they be okay if I tell them I’m not ordering through him though?

And will he give me a print out/email of all the specs etc

Played my home course, Herons reach Blackpool on Monday. Had my best ever score, 4 birdies, 11 pars and 3 bogies.

1 under par off my 7.5 handicap.

Went down to 6.4, played today and hit 38 points, so still going in the right direction. :greengrin

Went out this morning in the pissing rain and got absolutely drenched.

Only person on the course for full 18 except bloke ok 18th when I was on 2nd green.

Shot 93 - which is 23 over. My best score so far. I'm a wee bit gutted cos I had a few shots I could have made to go sub 90 but it's coming along.

Next lesson this week. Definitely has been the best investment I've made.

I been back playing after a 15 year break for about a year now(50yo).

Mostly been playing Carricknowe and probably averaging mid 80’s now. Plan is to join a course next year when we move to West Lothian.

St Michaels at Leuchars next week with a groupon deal.

How was the boat? I was up there in July and about half a dozen greens were well and truly boogered. They’d lost them and tried to latch them. They were a mess. Played Kingussie last year. Lovely. If you’re erup that way again I’d recommend Carrbridge. Lovely 9 holer and in excellent condition on my trip.

Boat was in great nick, certainly didn't see any major issues with the greens considering when we were playing. Looks like great work by the greens team to get them sorted!

Thanks will keep that in mind.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I entered the club singles comp this year, i'd reached the quarter final. The cut off date from when this had to be played was the 31st of August,

On the 18th of August, i tried to contact my opponent by phone, no reply but he was obviously on holiday as it was a foreign ring tone. 2 days later i called again, still no reply.

I informed the club that he was not replying to my calls both times. I called him again on the 21st and this time left a message explaining we had until the 31st to get this played.

I did not hear from him, and on the 29th of August i informed the club shop he had still not replied to my calls.

Again on the 31st i informed the shop that despite my efforts to contact my opponent, i had heard nothing back.

On september the 3rd, my opponent text me saying he'd just landed back from his holiday, and could we play the match on the 6th.

I agreed, a tee time was booked by him and i again informed the club of the situation.

On the morning of the 6th, i was told by the club we had both been disqualified, and the reason i was disqualified was i should have arranged the match before he went on holiday.

I would have done this had i knew he was going on holiday, but didnt, and the date clearly says that matches must be played by the 31st of August.

I cant get my head around this decision, it clearly makes no sense to me.

I’d be kicking up a real fuss. If there was no satisfactory resolution I’d be finding a new club. It’s a social game of golf FFS. I’ll be willing to bet that there’s a vested interest one of you would have been facing involved in that decision.

I have kicked up a real fuss, but to no avail. I have now gone above the clubs head and got the area manager involved, the club has a hotel attached to it, and if that does not work, i'm taking it to the owner of the whole company.

Shot 88 this morning. Tee'd off at 0714. Not a soul on the course. Par is 70. Course was perfect, sunny morning.

Shot 48 out and 40 in which was 6 over on the back 9.

6 pars, 6 bogies, 6 double bogies. I didn't think about my total score at all playing which I think helped.

That's my best round so far and I didn't put particular well (2, 3 putts) and I feel I left a few shots out there. I had birdie putts on 16, 17 and 18. I also hit 6 greens in regulation.

The lessons have been the best money I've spent on golf. I'm 10 times the player I was. I'm not where near perfect but I'm confident and I'm hitting the ball so well. I'm not a big hitter but I'm hitting it straight and I'm not losing balls right anymore (maybe the odd one still).

I'm loving the game and I just wish I had more people to play rounds with because I learn so much from playing with better players than me and I enjoy the social side.

That seems grossly unfair. What did the comp rules state? Was the onus on both players to arrange for a suitable date or was it the responsibility of the first named player ?

That seems grossly unfair. What did the comp rules state? Was the onus on both players to arrange for a suitable date or was it the responsibility of the first named player ?

I just received this reply, i was the first name, although it makes no odds if the opponent is not in the country.

And only yesterday i found out the same people involved allowed an extention to the ladies comp this season.:faf:

Gary,

Good evening,

Thank you for your patience, I have been around other hotels in the region this week and needed to speak to the team at Blackpool as to the reasons for what has happened.

I believe that this captain has also been involved in the decision that has been made.

We do unfortunately have to set deadlines for the games that were published back in April/May of when each round/game had to be played.

I can only sincerely apologise that on this occasion it has meant that the game hasn't been played in time, can I check if a conversation took place between the two of you if you could agree that one or the other proceeded to the next round under the circumstances?

We do try and organise as many social competitions as possible but do leave this where we can in the hands of the membership to organise the matches themselves.

I will ensure that Richard does speak to the team to ensure that communication is clearer as it is disappointing to read that you were not informed of the consequences of the game not being played before the end of August.

The last thing we want is a disappointed member. I would therefore as a gesture of goodwill invite you to a complimentary table of four for food at the hotel so that we can look to restore your faith in Village Blackpool.

Regards

Stuart Davies

A whitewash job! Personally I think it's better if both players are held jointly responsible for arranging ties as it reduces the risk of the the game not being played.

However , as you rightly say, it would make no difference in this instance as your opponent was on holiday.

Imo he should have done the right thing and awarded the tie to you.

Anyone ever been fitted at Scott gourlay?

Won a competition for £1000 worth of irons so decided to get fitted with Scott first, will they be okay if I tell them I’m not ordering through him though?

And will he give me a print out/email of all the specs etc

I've been before. I'd imagine there would be no problems but they would certainly take the fitting fee.

That's how these kinds of places catch you out really. Some refund the fee if you buy through them but specialised places like SGGT take the fee regardless. I know someone who went and they were told by one of the fitters to go work on their technique and go back to them later in the year but they still charged them for the fitting and would have charged them for the fitting later in the year.

Just a big con if you ask me.

Played Glasgow Gailes yesterday. Played well. I was doing a general play and it’s come up with a negative pcc. Only the second time I’ve seen this. The first was because of a temp tee shortening a par three ( I think) but not sure why this time. Not even sure how these things are calculated. It’s a secret I think.

The first was because of a temp tee shortening a par three ( I think) but not sure why this time. Not even sure how these things are calculated. It’s a secret I think.

Q.*What is the playing conditions calculation (PCC) and how does it work?

A.*At the end of each day, the playing conditions calculation takes place automatically to determine if scores made at the course were significantly higher or lower than the expected scores of the players who made them, primarily due to weather and/or course set up.

If scores were abnormally low or high, a PCC adjustment between -1 and +3 will be applied in the calculation of Score Differentials[emoji769] of everyone who played that day. A negative (-) adjustment means the course played easier than expected and a positive (+) adjustment means the course played more difficult than expected. A PCC of 0 means the course played as expected, which will be the case on most days.

The PCC:

Uses scoring data so no action is required by the club/course staff or golfer (except for posting scores),

Includes only scores made by players with a Handicap Index[emoji2400] of 36.0 or below,

Considers both 9-hole and 18-hole scores in the calculation, and

Only takes place if at least 8 scores were posted on a given day.

(Rule 5.6, Rules of Handicapping)

Cheers Jimmy. Its highly unusual for a general play score to be affected. It’s obviously because 8 or more people were doing general scores and played well enough to affect it. Conditions were decent if not perfect with receptive greens in the damp.

Conditions were decent if not perfect with receptive greens in the damp.My course is really wet but the greens are glorious still. I tend to play better in the wet I've found... not the rain like. I shot 75 yesterday which is my best score to date.

If anyone has seen my earlier posts, I'm actually getting really good. I've worked so hard all year at it. I'm shooting sub 80 whenever I play now which means I'm probably playing off 10 handicap although because it's preferred lies (I never do it, I just play the ball as is), my club won't take cards atm.

I've been playing as part of the member's role up every 2nd week which means I can get my scores verified. I'm still working on everything and I still have the odd ****house of a hole or even shot but it's the greatest thing I've done. I love it.

Good stuff Jimmy. It’s a great game for all ages and abilities. The trick is to keep it going over the winter (which I rarely do). Even if the courses are unplayable find a range somewhere even if it’s just once a week. If you’re breaking 80 more times than not you’ll be single figures never mind 10.:aok: There is no substitute for hard work. Especially the short game.

The PCC is, I believe, calculated by means of a mysterious algorithm within Scottish Golf's version of the WHS.

Other than that, then I've still to find someone who is fully aware of the computation. From my own experience, it very rarely fully allows for inclement weather conditions such as a gale force wind!

Best condition last year in West Lothian hands down was Harburn. It’s not a great winter course to be fair but from early last year to fairly late this year it’s been excellent.
Deer Park is fine but a bit if a slog in the winter as you’ve heard. It does have other facilities tho.

SCOTLAND has been named the best golf destination in the world – having secured a double victory at the 2022 World Golf Awards in Abu Dhabi.
It is the first time in the award’s nine-year history that Scotland has won the ultimate label of “Best Golf Destination in the World”.
Around 200 guests from various golfing destinations across the globe attended the Annual Golf Award gala ceremony in the Middle East, where Scotland was also crowned “Best Golf Destination in Europe (https://www.thenational.scot/news/europe)”, marking the first time that a country has won both awards.
Scotland beat other golfing destinations to win, including Austria, Italy, Ireland, France and Greece, and had many of its famous golf courses nominated for “Scotland’s Best Golf Course 2022”.
Scotland, “the home of golf”, has more than 550 courses to play at including championship courses and resorts, parkland courses, and nine-hole courses.
The Kittocks Course in St Andrews, King’s Course at the Gleneagles Hote, and the Ailsa Course at Turnbury were all nominated – however, Prestwick Golf Club in South Ayrshire took home the prize of “Scotland’s Best Golf Course”.

Kings acre never used to use mats in the winter. I’m afraid most if not all clubs will use winter greens if there’s either tons of rain or frost about.

If you come back in about 25 years you might get on to the membership waiting list for Gullane. 🙄. No mats or winter greens there.

Seriously though, Gullane 3 is worth a visit in the winter months and the greens fees are reasonable.

Edinburgh Leisure don't require fairway mats. They do sometimes have winter greens but it depends on conditions e.g. if the normal one is flooded or frozen.

Eyemouth also do a winter membership. Dearer and further away but depends how fussy you are.

I had a game at Dunbar today, good weather, course in excellent nick and I even played reasonably well considering I hadn't struck a ball for about 4 weeks. Mats are compulsory until probably the end of February, I don't particularly like them but after a couple of holes you do get used to them. I find pitching is the most difficult part of the game, I had zero control today but there again that might be have been down to my lack of touch and poor technique so I don't really blame the mats. Or maybe I do ! 🤔

Edinburgh Leisure courses are currently in excellent condition. Some tee mats in use but few if any temporary greens. No fairway mats.

I have played Carricknowe and Silverknowes in the past week and both in very good condition.

Very good value if taking the monthly direct debit membership for a few months. And you have the choice of 6 courses.

How’s the course holding up? Still holding much water? A mate of mine was a member there years ago, I played it with him a couple of times and I remember really liking it. I remember you asking about West Lothian courses a while back.

Seems pretty good. Think over the years they have done a lot of work with the drainage and more looks like it’s getting done this year doesn’t seem any worse than any other inland course.

Kids(and starting a business) was the reason I stopped playing for years really enjoying being back playing but many find it tricky due to the time needed.

I played Deer Park a couple of summers ago on a scorching day and loved it.

Returned last year when it was sodden and winter greens and what a difference. I generally can’t be arsed with winter greens in general though. Takes a lot of the fun out when not playing to a proper lush green trying to give yourself chances with the putter.

Think I’ve got ‘golfer’s thumb’ (form of tendinitis?).

It’s annoying, not quite a strain but similar pain when gripping, swinging and impact (so basically the whole swing 😂).

Often feel it worst after tee-offs, and after playing as well. Mainly the thumb but can feel it extending into the wrist too. Slight bruising appeared on my hand where the thumb joins fingers, but now gone.

Hopefully a few weeks off will let it sort itself out.. but was too tempted yesterday so played with an altered grip - wrapped my thumb over my fingers rather than straighten it down the grip which is when I feel it most.

Got round okay and still enjoyed it, but hope I can get back to a more orthodox grip, pain-free, soon!

Auchterarder is well worth a visit imo. Not too long but a very good test of golf at the same time. Its next door to the Gleneagles courses and has the same heathland appearance but with sensibly priced green fees. Good clubhouse facilities is an added bonus. I suspect that their Open Tournaments will already be fully subscribed for the forthcoming season so you may have to settle for a casual round of golf.

I believe they’ve got a new greenkeeper in as of this season and he’s made a lot of changes. I forget which ‘decent’ course it was he’s come from but my mate who is a member there was fairly excited about the guy coming in and what he’s be doing for the course.

It’s a course I enjoy anyway, but 16 gets me every time.

Had my worst score this week for 4 years, 3 putts on 5 greens and one 4 stab. I use a TM Spider so knew it wasn't the club's fault! Had been putting well recently as well.

Had a practice on the dining room carpet and realised my stance was out by a fraction. Always small margins. All I need now is to get back out again and prove it was that🙏

How easy / credible is it to get an old putter regripped?

I sacked my old one and paid a few quid for an Odyssey one a couple of years ago but my putting has gone to pieces. The new one feels light and quite hard to control, my old one feels heavy but easier to control.

The old one is a cheap one but it worked for me for years.

Is this a sensible option? Can someone suggest somewhere that would be good for getting this done?

It should be no problem to get your putter regripped, its a simple job that takes minutes to do.

I would think that most professional shops will have a selection of putter grips in stock and will be able to advise you of the best option . I also know that they do a re-gripping service at the Braids Driving range and at "Cash4Clubs" in Loanhead.

Agree on both counts. We are taking advantage of the early Scottish residents green fee which is 40% in March and April so that’s £150. It goes up to £220 the rest of the year and that’s still a discount!!!! My favourite course I’ve played tho.

Played it about 15 years ago in a freebie through my work. A round, a goodie bag, meal, free bar and a caddie with our four ball. It was a scorching day so all it cost me was £1 for a bottle of water half way round!

I won a polo shirt, which was stolen off our washing line a few years later!

I totally agree about the quality of the course, Dornoch still my number one, but Kingsbarns runs it close, nothing to do with the great value when I played it!

Am I right in saying that Killermont is the same course as Glasgow Golf Club? If so, I reckon I played it about 20 years ago and at the time I reckon it was one of the best inland courses I've ever played.
It is indeed GB. The Glasgow Golf Club own Killermont and their links attachment is Glasgow Gailes. Killermont isn’t overly long and a couple of quirky holes but a fine test for an old geezer. My laddies a lucky boy to be a member there. He had to do a three year apprenticeship at the Gailes before being invited for “full” membership of both. I think it helps he’s a more than decent golfer. Ideal as he lives in Milngavie about 10 mins from Killermont. Greens were quite magnificent. Oh aye and I saw the resident parakeet on the wing flying down the 11th hole. Bit of a shock seeing a green flying object out the corner of your eye over your tee shot.

Avoid Kirkcaldy at all costs. Shame really as I like it as a test but not only are the greens an absolute mess the whole course isn’t far behind. They had a bloody cheek charging £17 for their open today. Add in an absolute shambles of tee booking it was a poor all round day. I say shambles as after booking it through the Scottish golf app as that is what they use I got an e mail on Friday night saying an administrator had cancelled my morning time and put me in at 13.30. Phoned yesterday to ask WTF was going on and the pro didn’t know but confirmed my original tine was available and put me back there.
I asked about a twos sweep and the starter didn’t know if there was one. There were no cards but a paper copy. I think you were meant to use the Scottish golf app but couldn’t find the competition on it despite booking it through the app.
The whole club seems to be very mismanaged and shambolic and you can add the Scottish golf app to that too. A fife order of merit open with about 50 players eventually teeing it up.
The food was decent. :greengrin

I don’t think the old app was great (compared to BRS) but it worked for me and don’t understand why the need for change. If it needed changed they should just gave adopted the BRS system. Years of near flawless experience.

Played in an away day at a nice little course called Garstang, finished 2nd last year with 39 points, finished way down the pack today with 23 points off my 7.9.

What made it worse was i drove so well, never out of position all the way round. The first hole i was 47 yards from the pin after my drive, and came off with a 6 for nowt.

It never got much better from there. :greengrin

I'm blaming the bad back , one more game on Friday at my home course, then Old Links on Monday in the league, hopefully in better form.

Played the Castle course at St Andrews today. Interesting! 5 hour round but at least the weather was great. Main achievement was finishing with the same ball I started with. Played close to my handicap - with an 8 on the card! - 3 putted 3 greens on the trot in the front 9 without putting badly. They were 20, 25 and finally 40 yards!

Enjoyed the challenge but not sure I'll be back.

I had the unfortunate experience of playing the course in its early years and I vowed I'd never go back. The contouring of the greens was utterly ridiculous and I didn't like the long grassy mounds which were to be found in the middle of some of the fairways. I've heard that the contouring has been softened since the early years but its not a course I would hurry back to. However - the mid round pies were absolutely excellent so I suppose that was one redeeming feature.

I wouldn't have liked to play it in a high wind! The fairways were excellent, never had a bad lie. Some of the Greens were just plain silly.

I very much played within myself, often taking one club less to keep the ball in play, which paid dividends.

I agree GB about the mid round system to order food, what a great idea!

Played the first round of the club champ knock outs this morning. He won the 15th and 16th for the 3&2 victory.

This guy was supposedly an 18 index (I'm 17.4 at present and was the lowest index in the 'C' class knock outs) and he was roughly about 5 over thru 14 holes. 18 index aye okay then . Decided to look at his scores on the Scottish Golf app after. Discovered he's only submitted 5 cards since 2022 and 3 of them this year. There is no way in hell that he was an 18 index, I'd have said anywhere in the 8-11 range based on what I seen today. Maybe if he actually submitted cards his index would be where it should be and he would've been playing in the B class event instead.

Thing is, it's not like I played badly and just lost cos I had a shocker. I played very well. The holes I won, I literally had to play perfectly. This guy was just far too good of a player for me. And I get it, even the worst golfer on the planet can have a day here and there and shoot the lights out but this just felt differently. I can take losing to someone in and around my index no problem but I can't take losing to someone who should never be that index in the first place because they only submit 3 cards a year.

Just pure nonsense really.

Played the first round of the club champ knock outs this morning. First tee shot, right down the middle, probably about 240-250 yards total. Up steps my opponent. Absolutely smashes one about 40 yards past me. This guy is about 60 and he's just smoked a drive about 280-290 total distance. He then chipped it close and made a birdie whilst I made a par so 1 up thru 1 for him. He went 2 up thru first 3 holes. I pulled it back to 1 on the 4th and then he took over. He was 3 up thru 8 and I was getting a bit suspicious. Halved the 9th Par 5 to go into the back 9 3dn. I won the 10th to bring it back to 2 then he won the 11th to go back to 3dn. I won the 12th and 13th to pull it back to 1dn. 14th was halved. He was 5 over thru 14 holes. He won the 15th and 16th for the 3&2 victory.

This guy was supposedly an 18.8 index (I'm 17.4 at present and was the lowest index in the 'C' class knock outs after qualifying and was more or less the favourite to win the thing) and he was 5 over thru 14 holes. He absolutely bombed it off the tee and never missed a putt. 18 index aye okay then . Decided to look at his scores on the Scottish Golf app after. Discovered he's only submitted 5 cards since June 2022 and 3 of them this year. There is no way in hell that he was an 18.8 index, I'd have said anywhere in the 8-11 range based on what I seen today. Maybe if he actually submitted cards his index would be where it should be and he would've been playing in the B class event instead.

Thing is, it's not like I played badly and just lost cos I had a shocker. I played very well. The holes I won, I made par/birdie and literally had to play perfectly. This guy was just far too good of a player. And I get it, even the worst golfer on the planet can have a day here and there and shoot the lights out but this was just such a blatantly obvious bandit. I can take losing to someone in and around my index no problem but I can't take losing to someone who should never be that index in the first place because they only submit 3 cards a year. I'm not sour at losing to a better player, I'm sour at the fact he shouldn't be anywhere near the 'C' class in the first place and should've been in the B class.

I've asked for clarity on how many submitted cards you need to have within the year to be able to qualify for the knockouts. 5 cards submitted in a year, what's the point  I know other clubs have rules in place where you need to have played in X amount of medals that year or submitted X amount of scorecards to be able to qualify.

Ive just gone up to 8.3, and i'd be over the moon to play as well as him. I think to get a proper handicap, you should put in a card every week, but thats just me.

I could be wrong, but under WHS I don't think that there are any requirements for a player to return a set number of scores each season.

I'm not sure what it was like in the old system but this one... IMO you should definitely need to be entering a score at least once a month to keep your handicap unless you have a legit reason not to.

My main gripe is with the club in this instance, whether this person has intentionally sandbagged or not is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Someone who's only submitted a few cards over the space of a year shouldn't be able to qualify for club majors in particular club championships. I've heard of other places that require members have played X amount of comps that year for example to be eligible to qualify. Not having a minimum requirement in place leaves these things open to sandbagging and cheaters.

I'm sure some people would disagree with that and that's fine but the rules at my club certainly need to be tighter.

Yes, I've been lucky enough to play it twice under the Scottish Golf Scheme which at the time offered each member course the chance to ballot their members and allow them the chance of a fourball over Loch Lomond. The green fees were discounted to a very acceptable rate.

My verdict? - it was without a doubt the best inland course I've ever played and ever likely to play.

It's a pity that it's now so difficult to access for the everyday golfer.
