I think it's probably fair to say that in the current climate it's the more militant interpretation which holds sway.

Or the airhead interpretation as shown on (I think) CNN when they asked a group of US college campus protesters which river and which sea they were referring to and were met with blank faces.

Like what? You mean the religious stuff Rangers and Celtic fans sing about? I guess you might be right there.

Some basic geographical knowledge of what you're chanting about at a pro-Palestine demo would seem appropriate though.

Why would it? Why does it matter? If you can see war crimes and innocent children being murdered, why should you research geography before you can protest it?

It doesn’t. I can remember hearing a work colleague arguing with another guy years back that just because he had visited South Africa and someone else didn’t it gave him more right to argue the case for apartheid. It clearly didn’t.

The point being made wasn't about a right to protest, it was that if you chant from the river to the sea but then admit you have no idea which river or sea you're chanting about it makes you look pretty daft.
