I'm not arguing the rights or wrongs of the chant, just pointing out that it's perfectly obvious what he meant. He also tried to start a from the river to the sea chant, commonly acknowledged as a call for Israel's destruction.

If an equally fervent pro-Israel artist chanted death to Hamas would anyone be debating the nuance? Would they think oh hang on maybe they're calling for electoral reform in Gaza (where Hamas have been in uncontested power since 2006)? Unlikely.
“From the river to the sea” has always had multiple interpretations depending on who’s saying it and in what context—ranging from calls for equal rights and a single democratic state, to more militant interpretations. It is not as simple as saying it is commonly acknowledged as one single call for Israel's destruction.
