It’s not “revisionism in the extreme” to hold the opinion that Porteous was our best defender that season. It’s probably akin to someone having the opinion that Rocky had a better season than Iredale this year or vice versa, it’s simply a subjective opinion. The whole defence was excellent that season and he was major part of it. Revisionism would be trying to play down any of their contributions to what was one of our best seasons defensively in our history.
It is when it really wasn’t the reality. It’s only being trotted out now to try and make a case for signing him.

    https://www.hibs.net/showthread.php?352427-Player-of-the-year

The thread from that time has only one mention of Ryan Porteous on it.. and that mention is to point out how well Paul McGinn has done considering he has Porteous playing inside him.

There’s also these threads from the end of that season, it’s hardly gushing with praise with an almost unanimous feeling that he shouldn’t have been starting in the biggest game of the season such were his performance levels.

    https://www.hibs.net/showthread.php?351958-Ryan-porteous

    https://www.hibs.net/showthread.php?352061-Porteous-or-Daz

    https://www.hibs.net/showthread.php?352306-Porteous

Josh Doig was also part of that defence and won our YPOTY and YPOTY for the whole league, an award that Porteous was eligible for.

Ryan Porteous was part of a very good defence that year. That’s all he was though, a part, along with numerous others, a good few of which had better seasons. Claiming he was the main man, completely ignoring Doig when listing who he played alongside and claiming Hanlon, who was better than him and was playing so well he got called up for his first full Scotland cap during the season was an “ageing” centre half as if he was carrying him along absolutely is revisionism.

Dundee are going to be in serious trouble this season , strange Motherwell holding talks with this player when they haven’t appointed a manager I would have thought unless maybe it’s Docherty they’ve lined up for the job . 🤔

Haha.. I got mugged off too. Didn’t read the article.. the first part of the headline was enough. Naughty is very polite.

Stromsgodset winger Marko Farji is on Hearts’ transfer radar - with Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen also showing interest.

Aberdeen and Hearts both appear to be pretty busy. Mind you 5th and 7th best teams in Scotland would need to be.

Exactly that, I’m usually going tonto about lack of signings, but I’m so chilled about this window. Have full belief that we’re targeting specific players for areas we need.

Probably sign five more this summer I Reckon. Not including McGrath and Sallinger.

Same thing happened last season Hesrts did all their shopping early buying up all the has beens, Aussies, rejects and yesterday’s men and how they were going for world domination according to Mickey Stewart

    That ended well

As someone else said I wonder what Derek McInnes really makes of it all ?

    Time will tell

Hands up don’t pay any attention to Hearts they have that wee prick Devlin who has been about for some time did they not buy Rowles who was decent but they cashed in on ?

Been pulled on my lack of yam knowledge before

Always have to buy a programme every time we play them to keep up to date with their ever changing over bloated squad

    Mea culpa

    Edit

What about that boy Nieuwenhof ?

Know nothing about him might be an Aussie ?

We've already signed a keeper, and one with a really good reputation. And McGrath of course.

Three more good signings and our squad looks very peachy. Don't think Dons or Jambos would say the same.

I see on the Swansea forum they were talking about reducing the size of their squad by moving on some fringe players. We actually got a mention along with Derby in “ we really need Derby and Hibs to get their cheque books out ‘ take it that was referring to us about Myko . I don’t know if Derby was for another player or are interested in Myko . At the right price would folk be happy to see him back or think we should move on ?

At the right price, absolutely. Could see he was getting better as the season went on.

I don't think the fee would be the issue but what Myko is currently earning, I'd be happy to see him back though

We'd have to match the wages Swansea are paying him over the next 2 years and pay a transfer fee, and he's unlikely to be one of our strongest XI. Not happening.

Not necessarily, we can offer what we would normally offer him and Swansea can agree with him to pay the difference in the two wages for a period. Transfer fee could be nominal as well, all depends on how desperate they are to save some money.

I think he has just over a year left in his contract . If the rumours are true what he’s getting at Swansea wage wise I think he is more than likely going to have to take a fairly significant wage drop where ever he goes and Swansea will get nothing remotely close to what they paid for him which was daft on their part anyhow. Might be a long shot though you never know in football.

Kuharevich wants to come back so I would assume he knows it'd be a fairly significant wage cut.

Wouldn't be against Myko coming back he offers something different up front if he can add goals then even better

I expect that finding a stable home, games and a manager will benefit his development. Had a very stop and start career until last season, but I genuinely believe his top end potential is way above the SPFL.

Plenty of players have had potential though.

    I’d want better than Myko.

He’s decent for off the bench and putting himself about but I’m still not convinced

Yet we had some of our best performances at the business end of the season with him starting. As others have correctly mentioned, his form was improving as the season went on. Would love to sign him permanently.

I get why there’s split opinions on him though I think he offered us something a bit different and the potential is there in he can improve . If the deal was right I wouldn’t be against bringing him back again . It will be interesting to see if we try as Triantis and him were two players I think Gray wanted back when he became manager.

You're not really addressing my points, just comparing him to our current centre backs. As I said, there's more to being a good footballer that innate ability.

Porteous' performances were erratic and cost the side too often. Which seasons were our goals conceded so low? When he played with players like Hanlon, Ambrose, Macgregor ?
Can you explain what performances were "Erratic" the season we finished 3rd?

We conceded 50 goals last season.
We conceded 35 the season the last time we finished 3rd.
The season following that we conceded 42.

Ryan was an integral part of both defences and mostly one of the first names picked by multiple managers.

I think I'll take the word of the countless coaches who called upon him and the multiple championships sides who were interested in signing him.

Tend to agree with this, Myko has seemed half fit all season and you have to wonder if he has it in him to up his fitness to a standard where it would be worth Hibs busting a gut to keep him. I'm not saying I would be against him staying, but I wouldn't want us to be blowing a large part of our budget on procuring him.

Was wondering about Sam Dalby after his good season with Dundee United, but it seems he has signed a 4 year deal with Bolton ... ho hum.

    From the Guardian Rumour Mill

Sunderland are awaiting offers for the midfielder Nectarios Triantis. The Premier League newcomers want around £1.5m in exchange for his services after an impressive season on loan at Hibernian. Fortuna Düsseldorf and MLS clubs are keen on the player who is debating where his international future lies, with Australia and Greece both options.

I think he did a lot of unseen work (boom boom). He brought a lot to the team even if he wasn't banging them in all the time. I'd like to get him permanently if we could.

  30. #3419
If we were to sign Porteous would we be getting a player who was better or no better than the one who was, and let's be honest, struggling in the team before he was sold?

If he's not improved then I dont see the point of bringing him back. Watford sending him out on loan and then losing his place at Preston doesn't give me much confidence.

If he comes back I'll trust Gray to get the best out of him.

I’ve not seen Porteous for Watford or Preston, and I agree he wasn’t at his best before he left.

I think out of frustration and a sense he has to do it himself.

But for Scotland, on most occasions I thought he was very good and showed quality and discipline (Germany aside) that he has.

If we were getting him back for the sake of it or without the manager knowing him it would be a different story, but for me Porteous under SDG would be brilliant.

I’d want him to play RCB though and then if we fail to resign Rocky, sign a similar centre back with the athleticism he has
