Looks like the council are planning on making Smokey Brae one way up the hill only and further changes around that area.
They seem to be suggesting one of the reasons is to allow the fire engines out quickly but that station is about to be closed permanently!

More severe than this is potentially the long delayed work at demolishing multiple buildings on the A1 then building the student accommodation. Chaos ahead at this part of town.

Who makes these decisions? You really have to wonder. It was the same nonsense with Manse Road bus gates which was a disgraceful money making exercise they ended up going back on.

Although not related to ER but the closer of Corstorphine Road down to 1 lane (not each way, 1 lane with temporary traffic lights) is going to cause absolute havoc. It's on for 6 months.

The most frustrating thing about a lot of these works is how often you pass them with no one working. It was the same in Stockbridge recently. Whether that’s down to the workies just deciding they’ll finish early or not having the materials/equipment available doesn’t really matter. Just highlights poor planning/supervision of the work. The recent Stockbridge works were a whole month over the set timeline

Think yourselves lucky, Dunkeld to ballinluig duelling of the A9 going out to contract soon. That's 8 miles of disruption on a major road with unsuitable alternatives for anything but cars, even though trucks and buses will attempt it.

We should just admit that we've made a complete arse of the roads in Edinburgh over the last few decades, go back to how it was in 1980 and start again.

https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/cycling...e-improvements
Opening sentence: Smokey Brae is an important link between communities in the east of the city, from London Road at Jock’s Lodge to the historic village of Restalrig.
CEC answer: We're going to close Smokey Brae to cars northbound
Edit to add: For what is possibly the first time in my life I've written to the Council to ask them wth they think they're doing. I'm turning into Victor Meldrew.Last edited by grunt; 09-06-2025 at 02:11 PM.

As the above post says, a lot of people have absolutely no inclination to start cycling yet everywhere you go now roads are being narrowed and turned into 1 lane for traffic to accommodate more cycle lanes.

From Google
Why is there a row over Scotland's longest road? - BBC News
The A9 dualling project aims to upgrade 83 miles (133 kilometers) of single carriageway between Perth and Inverness. Two sections, totaling 11 miles (18 kilometers), have already been upgraded. The remaining 77 miles (124 kilometers) are still under construction according to the BBC.Last edited by Berwickhibby; 09-06-2025 at 03:25 PM.

That's from Dunblane to Thurso.
The 40 miles from Dunblane north are fully dualled, the section north from Perth to Inverness is a mix of dual and single carriageway, 28 miles is dual the rest, 83 miles is single.
There are no plans to dual any more road north of Inverness.
So, 68 miles out of 144 are dualled so far. There is no such thing as too much yarn, just not enough time.
