I genuinely don't get that team.

What are we going to learn about Hanley, Robertson, McGinn, McTominay and Gilmour that we don't already know?

2 games against Iceland and Lichtenstein should have been an extended holiday for them. Get Doig, Miller, Irving and Barron in. Also bemoans our lack of depth at goalkeeper then neglects to give another option minutes to see how they handle it.

I suppose we shouldn't be that surprised. Clarke all but said there would be minimal changes. Pleased to see Hirst and Johnston start at least.
I get that feeling a lot with Clarke.

You can’t argue with his record at qualifying for stuff relative to a number of his predecessors.

But a lot of the time his selections and decisions baffle me and on the biggest stage his teams have fairly consistently disappointed.

I think a strong argument can be made that he’s had a quality of player at his disposal that his predecessors never enjoyed and I’d argue now that these teams have achieved in spite of him rather than thanks to him.

Previous managers have picked teams and got disappointing results where it’s been hard to see what more they might have done. I don’t get that with Clarke very often.

Bigger picture - it was only a friendly. But with so many competitive games there are few opportunities to be genuinely experimental. You want to come away from friendly games having learned as much as possible. Like you, I don’t know what he really expected to learn there?
