He should sign seconds before his debut, to save us a few quid.

Possibly just means we get him registered then or maybe something contractual. He mentioned in his interview about being in at the start of pre season.

He was near the top on all stats where goalkeepers were concerned last season in his league.

Josh Nisbet is a good player who will go on to play at a higher level.

Would like him to stay in Scotland, the better players here helps the game however he’d be good on the continent.

Would like him at Hibs but Mackay is against it because he was identified before his arrival, fair enough. We don’t need him now anyway but one that got away.

County fans are disappointed in his departure but far too good for the Championship.

Good luck to him. The angst amongst some to try and prove others wrong is incredible.
Whether a player is a good player or not a good player is obviously a matter of personal opinion.

As probably the person on this forum who has seen Josh Nisbet more than anybody else…..and I say that after watching nearly all his games in Oz over a period of years….here’s mine.

(He actually made his debut for Mariners the same night as the towering Usain Bolt and the photo of then standing together is a classic!)

Nisbet was voted player of the season prior to him leaving for Ross County.

He was the clear ‘pick of the bunch’ in a very successful team that won trophies not only in Oz but also in Asia.Nick Triantis was part of that team but was certainly overshadowed at that time by Nisbet.

Being 5’3”” he has suffered from ‘sizeism’ everywhere he has been..including at the Mariners at one point……and I believe that is one of the main reasons he ended up at Ross County.

Most European, and certainly Scottish clubs would view his small stature as being not suited to their league.

Nisbet received several lucrative overs to sign for Japanese clubs, but he was intent on playing in Europe, and the only offer forthcoming was from Ross County.

I thought at the time that this was not a good choice…….playing for an always struggling bottom of the table side who spend most of their time battling to avoid defeat….as opposed to side who were more likely to be seen as creative and attacking…was never going to help him show his ability.

Unlike some…..and I guess time will tell…Like you I do think that he will play at a higher level than Div2 in The Netherlands.

Football in Oz is based (roughly) on the Dutch style of play (the Technical Directors were often referred to as the ‘Dutch Mafia’)

The Dutch move is, again in my opinion, much more suited to Josh’s ability, and signing for Ross County was never a good move for him.

A bit like when Scott Allan joined Rotherham.

Again my opinion…and it isn’t worth any more or less than anybody’s…is based on having followed the players career over a number of years..rather than making a snap judgement.

Not really interested in debating whether I am right or wrong…..it is as I say a matter of opinion, but yes, I would have liked to see him play in a Hibs shirt.

Sorry, not directly related to the point you made however I’m sure CCM had a young left back we were heavily linked with.

Whatever happened to him, did he get a move?

Jacob Farrell….who Hibs were aware of.

Jacob went to Portsmouth (who seem to Hoover up most of young Australian talent these days) but suffered a serious injury in training and was basically out for the season.

Hopefully he’ll kick on next season.

Great post Fred, always appreciate your knowledgeable input when it comes to Aussie league players. Sizeism in football is an interesting one.. some of my favourite players to watch over the years have been diminutive….. Strachan, Gemmill, Mickey Weir, Ardiles……and then of course you have Messi and Maradonna. Hibs currently have one of the “biggest” sides we’ve had for a long while and we have been really good at not being physically dominated, particularly in defence. Which has given the whole team confidence, I believe.

I have no opinion of Josh Nisbet having literally never watched him play, but putting a small, technical, creative player into a Ross County Team really doesn’t sound like the way to get the best out of him.

He's came from a bottom six Austrian Bundesliga club - he may be very good who knows, but I don't think we can say with any certainty that he is automatically our number one. I think Smith will start the seasons as our number one and it will be his jersey to lose.
I understand what you mean and we had similar conversations with Donegal when we were heavily linked with the guy. I think you're right that we will go into the pre season with it being "show us why we should drop Smith for you". But I just have a hunch that this guy will be our starting keeper come the first competitive fixtures.

It’s quite a basic way of looking at it, but I just can’t see us spending a good few quid (if it’s even close to what was reported) on a goalie that isn’t coming in as number one.

The guy has come from somewhere where he’d, after a while, established himself as number one and was obviously really well thought of when you read the statement from his club. That’s a bit for him to give up. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t start the season.

I was expecting a loan keeper to come in via the BKG link, but regardless DG was always looking to bring in a new No 1 for next season.

Slight digression, but anyone looking to see coverage of the new Hibs signing in the Evening News, our local paper, will be disappointed. Their football coverage on today’s edition, consists of back page stories about Hearts players attracting attention ( probably from moths) and Craig Gordon’s testimonial. 4 pages of Scotland build-up (understandable). Two pages of general sports news featuring woman’s cricket and darts. Then a full page of Hearts news all about Shankland and Penrice attracting suitors and finally a full page of angling news. No mention of Hibs anywhere. Am I just being paranoid, but do you think they are ignoring us in the hope that we will just go away?

I think you're being a bit paranoid. Hibs probably announced this a bit late to rejig their paper set up (do they still print at tea time for the evening itself these days?)

It appears he hasn't spoken to any press yet other than Hibs so I would expect a heavier coverage on another day.

I'm glad he failed elsewhere. If we stop making excuses for him it boils down to the simple fact he just isn't good enough. This stand out player in Australia can't make any sort of impact at Ross County? I'm not having this unsuited nonsense. Is the guy a player or not?

    Well avoided hibs.

Probably, but still think that it’s a bit strange to have no Hibs stories at all on a Friday, considering the amount of Hearts pish they have filed.

He was playing at that level back when he left us 2 years ago, I’d imagine he’d be improved after 2 years of training and playing with Brentford b team, perhaps I’m wrong and he will drift off to obscurity but, would love to see a young homegrown player come back and set the Heather alight

There was no Hibs news in yesterday's paper either. And just the four pages of Hearts.
They've only gone and done it! They've only gone and won the Scottish Cup! What kept you, Hibs?!

Plenty of Hibs coverage in the EEN including quite a lot about the new goalkeeper.

It's pretty clear Smith was brought in as a backup but has surprised everyone to claim the jersey, whoever is number 1, we need 2 pretty decent keepers to vie for the jersey and keep each other on their toes.
