Post Champions League Chaos in Paris

Apparently really chaotic in Paris as Fans celebrated PSG's win in the Champions League Final, with nearly 500 arrests and hundreds injured.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...league-victory

(the article mentions 2 dead, but not 100% sure if they were actually linked to the 'celebrations')

EDIT: Apologies, I just noticed this has been mentioned in another thread.

Yeah, absolutely nothing to do with football.

Yeah, just been reading some updated reports and a lot of what went on looks like they were happy for any excuse just to go on the rampage.

Seems to be a theme in France.

There were also riots after the 2018 and 2022 world cup finals

And there were issues at the Liverpool CL final in Paris a few years ago with locals attacking fans

Not sure it was anything to do with celebrating PSG victory to be honest.

One of the PSG players asked post match for no silliness or violence in Paris, which I thought was a really strange thing to request.

    Not so strange afterall.

Went regularly for the rugby, but as you say its a 5hithole now. Muggers and pickpockets everywhere and a nightmare at night. Pimps and drug dealers all over the place. City has gone to the dogs.

I went last November and enjoyed myself. Stayed in the Marais area and was very happy.

There’s a bakery called The French *******s (barstewards, in its swear filter dodging format) that do an outstanding caramel eclair. Good steak and steak tartare at L’Aller Retour Marais as well but booking recommended.

If you’ve not booked it already, I wouldn’t go up the Eiffel Tower. Very expensive, crowded, and queued nearly two hours to get back down.

I was there 3 weekends ago, first time since 2009, and it has regressed in appeal terribly.

On the surface it is still beautiful, but there is an undercurrent of unease in parts.

I had no idea that the Eiffel Tower is effectively closed off for a wide perimeter with Perspex anti terrorist fences, there is no point going anywhere near it unless you have a ticket to go up the tower, the surrounding area is filled with hundreds of disheveled looking trinket sellers with identical crap. The tower still looks beautiful from over the river on the Trocadéro side though.

Have had the very same eclair from the very same place. Can second that.

I’ve been to Paris twice the last couple of years. Never had any trouble, never felt unsafe.

Would prioritise the Museum d’Orsay over the Louvre and would only go to the Pompidou if you’re into modern art (which I very much am).

Worth searching the Michelin Bib Gourmaund guide for fancy French meals at a reasonable price. I forget the name of the place but had outstanding slow cooked beef with braised parsnip somewhere followed by a pear, honey, and goats cheese dessert for a very reasonable price.

Would defo return to Paris. Pickpocketing is on the up in most cities so always weary wherever I go now.

Edit- Tell a lie. Stopped off near Gare de Lyon in 2023 at the Rugby World Cup before jumping on the TGV to Marseilles.

Now that is a sketchy city. My cousin got his sporran ripped off him lost his wallet and phone.

Flew to Paris for the Euro's last year and got the train from Gard de l'Est to Augsburg before the Germany game. Felt a bit uncomfortable around the station area.

    Opinions…so strange.

Have been spending a lot of time over there recently. It’s a beautiful magical place, where people still take the time to relax and engagement each other and life. It makes London look like an uptight third world slum full of manic depressives.

Fair enough, in no rush to return to London either these days… probably best left to another thread though 🤣

I've never liked Paris. Just never done it for me at all.

I love France in general. Spent time in Marseilles, Montpellier, Nice and Antibes and loved them all but Paris just left me cold. Must be a north v south thing.

Also been to Marseille and loved that too.

Was warned by a French person I know before I went to be careful but never felt unsafe there either. Maybe I’m just oblivious to danger

Paris, London, The Beatles. It becomes almost fashionable to knock them all despite all three being justifiably iconic.

I visited a fair few French coastal cities during my time at sea and Paris as a tourist. Hugely different places and loved them all. Vive la différence.

    It really isn't.

I have been many times over the years, last time stayed up near Folie Bergere in a very reasonable apartment.

Lots of lovely wee bars and restaurants, you can do the tourist thing or just chill out.

Like anywhere, it has good and bad points.

'Frankfurt' Hahn is my favourite for that. Located almost as close to Liege and Luxembourg as it is to Frankfurt.
