22 senior players on the retained list in discussions with 2 more and JM still to be added . That could take our squad to 25 with no departures.

Obviously players will move on, Vente for example.

I wonder how many more will be moved on and what size of squad we will have.
Good point - it struck me that our sustained upturn in form and squad morale partly coincided with us getting down to a leaner squad, without the unplayable discontented squadfillers like Luke Amos and Harry McKirdy / Nohan Kenneh hanging around the training ground and bringing the atmosphere down.

When you're down to a leaner squad, of good characters like Iredale, the Caddens, Dwight Gayle, and everyone at training feels they have a realistic chance of being in the matchday squad, and contributing to the team, it has to help with the atmosphere and the dynamics of the club.

Fair play to Malky Mackay for getting as many out the door as he did in the course of last season.

Now it's time for Tavares and Delferriere, and (more lucratively) Vente and Youan to either buy in to the European dream or move on

Looking at that list I think you have to discount Tavares and Delferrière. We’ll look to get them out.

Molotnikov I think we’ll look to get out on loan next season. Not sure about Megwa, don’t see him coming back and playing but we have him a 4 year contract last year which I found strange.

The squad is gradually getting in to better shape when you compare it to the amount of players we had on the books before, making no contribution.

Can see Tavares moving on, if Rocky stays Ekpiteta may want to move, Miller widely touted as having interest in him from elsewhere, Youan and Vente quite likely to leave as well. NMW also could be looking at something else, got a feeling that if Triantis signs we are going to see a midfielder move on.

If all that were to come to fruition and we then get group stage Euro football I'd be slightly concerned regarding depth of the squad.

I can still see the following moved out

    Youan
    Vente
    Miller
    Tavares
    Ekpiteta
    Delferierre
    Megwa loan
    Molotnikov loan

Looked at very good prospect when I have seen him. Not in the same league of poor contract decisions as Taveres or McKirdy

I don't think you'll see the laddies go out on loan until we're out of Europe personally.

Delferriere also my recollection was he got hooked after 25 mins against St Mirren then week or two after he was getting a significant extension made absolutely no sense

Are we not looking at upgrading anyone in the core of the team now? Which players form part of the core?

If Rocky doesn’t sign then that’s one player who’s been playing directly infront of Smith removed from the core. If miller also leaves, which there seems to be rumours of, then that’s another. We also may not see Triantis back, that’s another.

I’m not against Smith being number one next season, far from it. I am against him being number 1 if we sign better purely because it would be ‘unfair’ to drop him as others have suggested.

I know there will be thoughts that he won’t be on much money but the 4 year deal for Megwa was mental. Not quite as bad judgement as the Delferriere deal
    but along the lines.

The wonderful world of Johnson football, play a young DM at RB and watch him struggle. The lad came with a decent rep, from a good team, sometimes they don't work out.

Yep I don't mind Delfierre. His main issue was inconsistency. Some games he'd look a player, next he was awful and hooked early doors. It hasn't worked out.

Think his extension came under Montgomery, though. Then didn't play him and loaned him out in January.

The two keepers we are linked with are Paulsen and Sallinger . How do you know they are better ? , did you know at the beginning of the season Smith was better than Bursik ? .

I admire your want to stick with Smith come hell or high water and I get a lot of what you say DH. But we as fans don't know if they are better or not, but the point is if there is an objectively better goalkeeper out there then why wouldn't we play them over Smith? If David De Gea decided he wanted to come to Hibs I wouldn't turn him down because Smiths a nice bloke and played well beforehand.

Whatever goalkeeper we sign (and we will sign one to at least replace Bursik) will be brought in with the viewpoint of challenging Smith to remove him from the number 1 spot that he currently is in possession of and will no doubt go through pre-season with. It's up to Smith to keep up his standards to hold onto the spot, but at the same time it's up to the other keeper to take advantage of any slips or perform so well in training and bounce games that we have no choice but to go with them. That's just football.

Some Hearts fans losing their minds on kickback at the thought of signing McEntee

Seems it’s very much divided and there’s a lot of confusion about signing players now, JTA and McInnes just wanting some big bruisers

Hearts are going to be a team full of cloggers next season.

I'm not bothered about them signing players from league two. Its a truly dreadful level of football.

Can remember a Ross county game we were two up he was brought on in midfield had a mare scored an own goal and we almost lost. Not all down to him of course

Does seem a clear conflict between Mcinnes normal signings eg usually big physical and British based with the JTA global database

So then its possible they might not be or they might be on par with Smith and even if the one we eventually sign is say marginally better it’s entirely possible Gray will stick with the one he knows who has been consistently good with a save percentage of 75% .

I go back to Bursik who was signed as NO.1 who Gray and his staff gave every chance to for 13 games or so even though he had only a 59 % save rate and was making mistakes. Smith had to be patient and wait for his chance which is what another keeper will have to do as well I suspect .

Hibs target? Someone we looked at briefly months ago and then moved on.

And if that's what Anal Ytics gives you, I'm glad we've got our recruitment team instead of theirs.

Smith is a decent fairly reliable keeper who has probably been better than expected, hence his extended deal. We still need another good keeper to challenge and if he's better, he'll start before Smith.

    Of course it’s possible.

The goalkeeper that starts next season will be the one that Gray considers the best. I’m surprised people seem to be suggesting that they think that won’t be the case because they think we’ll see being fair to Smith to be more important

If Smith starts the season in goals it’ll be because the club think he’s our best goalkeeper. It would be doing him a disservice to suggest he could be played purely because it wouldn’t be fair to drop him. There’s not a chance in hell David Gray will care about anything other than getting the best team out on the pitch.

Totally agree that we will sign another keeper to challenge Smith for the jersey which is a must actually , competition is always good to have in a team . That’s also what I’m saying in Smith has consistently been good last season so I think Gray will stick with him as No.1 at the start of the new season and whoever the other keeper is we get will have to bide his time in getting a chance much like Smith did .

When / If he does it will be up to the new guy to then take his chance . What some are saying in we will sign another keeper who will just walk in and replace our current keeper because he might be better I don’t will happen under Gray . New keeper will have to earn the jersey or Smiths form dips to give him a chance.
