the Americans will either have to work for the same wages as the Vietnamese, Chinese and Mexicans
Maybe the US could pop back to an old system they had there where some of the population didn't get paid at all for the work they did?

Is it not two different things though? That article is the cost of you pay the tariffs? I thought it was for a 100% US made iPhone.

Slowly, slowly, the orange guys vision has only just begun to become reality, he'll invent plenty more super policy, just as soon as people keep telling him........

    Yeah, you're right.

The "cost with tariffs" isn't nearly as scary as the other one.

Quite apart from the upfront costs in setting up a production facility in the US, the profit margins at that price will be so slim as to make it uneconomic. Would-be manufacturers would also be wary of the fact that there might be a change in Government, and policy, in a few years' time.

IMO, people and businesses who can afford it will suck up the price-increases for now; others will hold off upgrading.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why tariffs might not work as well as Trump seems to think, unless Apple shift the manufacturing for the entire worlds supply of iphones to the US, the cost of manufacturing a 100% US made iphone is likely to be much higher than just getting one from China and paying the additional tariff on it.

For reference, there's an interesting video on youtube detailing the costs involved in making somebody's dream phone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bny2NJkJGXc
which gives a rough idea of the cost of making a phone from scratch. The cost of an iphone would clearly be much less as this is a one off, but it does give you an idea of the costs involved in setting up new tooling lines and assembly lines.

My current iPhone is over 5 years old and I’m hoping to get a few more months out of it although the speaker is deteriorating on it now and I’m switching to Samsung after seeing the Apple boss standing with Trump at his inauguration.

He can if he can make it outside America, and do a tariff free deal with China.

Maybe someone should whisper it in the orange guy's ear? People are always telling him they don't want to pay more for everything.

They might get a super deal from a super deal maker.

US citizens won't have that as much of an option, of course. High-end Samsungs are made in Vietnam. (46% on that Liberation Day scale....)

Owning a phone shop in Hamilton Ontario is likely to become very profitable if these tariffs hold(I don’t think they will).

My best mate lives in Toronto, and of course he's pleading with all of us over here to boycott anything US.

So I bought something recently, which originated in Ontario. I proudly sent him a photo of the box.......

    "That's Ontario, California.......prick".

Meanwhile 12% has been wiped out both my pension fund and investment ISA.
At this rate I’ll be a pauper by July.

It truly is a real-life caricature. The whole thing. How long will it take the people to wake up to what is going on? There must be something in their water 🙄
