    Anyone ever had appendicitis?

I was taken into hospital last Tuesday with the most horrific stomach pain I've ever experienced. Had the useless little appendage removed (my appendix, not the other one) and I tell you what it has knocked me for six.

Just got out of hospital today and I feel weak as a kitten and been signed off work for three weeks. They tell me the whole area was full of infections and the appendix itself was practically "in bits".

Anyone been through this torture? Any tips or advice on when i might start feeling normal again?

    Cheers

I’ve not, so can’t help you here.

But I’m curious - was it totally out of the blue? Did the doctors tell you whether the infection was only a recent thing or had it been rumbling away for a while? Had you been aware of anything much in the run up to the recent major flare up?

My son had it 10 years ago. He was very weak and tired for about a month afterwards and had to properly build himself up again with small meals and nutrition over a couple of months.

The flare up came very suddenly.

Over the last year to 18 months I've been having periodic stomach aches, usually every three or four months, but they were generally always gone after 24 hours so didn't pay them much heed, but those could well have been the start of something brewing.

This one started late on Sunday last, and it felt the same so again i thought I'd stick it out for a day and then all would be well. It quickly turned different, with the pain radiating out towards my hips and even groin area. Excruciating. By Tuesday I could take it no more and headed in to the hospital.

Every one of the nurses and doctors scolded me for leaving it so long and said any longer and it could have got very serious. Look after your health chaps. If the slightest thing doesn't feel right in your body then get it seen to.

Sounds awful. Hope you are on the mend.

Re your last paragraph, that's all very well and good, except the standard line when I've phoned the GP recently is "piss off" or along those lines. I get the impression you'd need to be on death's door to get the GP to speak to you, at least at my practice. I dread how many illnesses are getting unnecessarily worse because of the difficulty in accessing GP services. I also don't mean when you have a wee cold or something... I had diarrhoea constantly for three weeks a few months ago and I couldn't even get a phone appointment with my GP to discuss it.

Agree about the difficulty of getting to speak to a GP. With regard to your comment above, and not wishing to raise undue concerns, but there is a recent NHS advert on social media about precisely these symptoms. I suggest you try again with your GP and mention the advert.

My mate has something similar a few years ago, but his burst. There was literal ***** all over his internal organs and his intestine was like Belgian lace.

They used something like 30 pints of saline to wash him out.

He too was weak as a kitten, lost a shed of weight. He did get back to normal. But it takes time.

Good luck with the recovery and don’t push yourself too hard.

My mum's appendix burst and it it caused all sorts of issues. She was in pain for week's before going to the GP and then hospital to have it removed. I would be at the minimum contacting your GP or if there is any documentation that was handed to you seeing if there is a phone number to call at the hospital. Hope you get well soon and this is just the normal reaction to the procedure
