    Christmas Market Magdeburg

Another attack on a German Christmas market. At least 2 dead and 70 injured on the anniversary of the attack on the Berlin Christmas market 8 years ago.

Bild Zeitung reporting that the perpetrator was arrested and is a Saudi Arabian doctor, how true that is is still to be verified. If true then the fallout will be immense.

Turns out he’s a right wing nut job who supports the AfD and Musk.

If past experience of this sort of thing tells us anything, then it's to wait until the dust has settled instead of forming an opinion based on what social media is saying.

Der Spiegel seems to be quoting from an interview with the suspect. He professes admiration for Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk.

I'm still going to wait until confirmed facts replace speculation before trying to understand why someone has deliberately driven a car at high speed through a gathering of innocent men, women and children. Although the why will become irrelevant and his skin colour will more than likely be the cause of massive fallout after this incident.

There appears now to be lots of evidence he was a big supporter of AfD and was an atheist.

    This is totally bizarre.

What can anybody hope to achieve by doing something like this, regardless of their religion or political views?

It’s like school shootings etc. No reasonable person can ever come up with an explanation. Some people are just broken.

That won't make an ounce of difference, even if true. The fact he is an immigrant and has brown skin will be enough to bolster support for the right.

Seems like a bit of planning fail in that there were concrete blocks at the market, presumably to prevent a truck getting through but the gaps were big enough for a car.

I was walking along George Street the other day and noticed the concrete blocks at the end of the road. I did think at the time that if I was a terrorist intent on killing and maiming as many people as possible that I’d probably use car, mount the pavement to go round the blocks and then have free reign to mow down as many people as I wanted to.

It looked like a fairly obvious flaw to me.

He’s one of them though. This is an attack by a right wing anti Muslim nut job. And we should never tire of saying so. Let them be the ones pointing to the colour of his skin.

Do you think there is space to allow for emergency vehicles?

Even if what is being speculated is true, there's no way the far right will accept to believe that he's one of their own. For them he'll just be another Arab terrorist immigrant that proves they're right.

Possibly, but does that not defeat the purpose?

Could not care less on what side of the political spectrum or religion they follow, this ****bag murdered innocent people trying to enjoy the Christmas market. I feel for their families right now.

They'll still win votes for it, all many will see is the perpetrator's Arab ethnicity.

I'm sure everyone is feeling for the victims and their families, it's still possible to ask questions like why though.

Correct. I’d stayed away from this thread and twitter posts about it until now because it seems too many people’s main concern is the political implications :(

Damned right there are people concerned about the political implications, there's a general election looming, the result of which may effect the lives of millions of people and which will be hugely effected by the tragic events of yesterday.

Owen Jones is almost taking pleasure in the terrorist being far right, he is enjoying it too much.

Yes I agree. The only way that would work would be a moveable barrier.

I was on Princes Street hogmanay when there was approximately 500000 there. Loads of casualties & the emergency vehicles had no chance of getting through. That was the last time it was a free for all for crowds at the street party.
