    The Price of a Pint

Latest grift from pubs following on from boil-in-the-bag food at restaurant prices and aggressive tipping - surge pricing.

O’Neils in Soho have been doing this for years. Not sure why it’s suddenly big news. Shame cos it was a great pub with live music a lot of tourists. Had a few good nights there over the years.

I know its not really the same thing but it reminds me of a bar I went to in New York about 12 years ago called Exchange (I believe it is now closed). It was a stock exchange themed bar where the prices of everything fluctuated according to demand and there was a stock exchange style ticker above the bar tracking the prices of the different drinks.

I think there's one in Barcelona - quite a nifty idea.

I think both examples would be illegal in Scotland- as I understand it prices need to be held for 78 hours (no happy hours etc) so we'll be safe from the price gauging.

    Correct.

Initially the law was changed to prevent pound a drink nights, happy hours, incentivising doubles etc but in this instance it will protect the consumer if such a practice becomes commonplace.

Looking at their website, they are open until 3am every day, which in Soho is a winner. I can't imagine other clubs etc wanting them to charge ' day ' prices

after midnight so I wonder if pressure was put on them even though they are part of a big chain ?

    Just a thought...

The rules around doubles seem to vary place to place, or maybe there aren't, as some places double the price and some just seem to add a seemingly arbitrary amount.

As for £1 nights - I remember (vaguely ) the £1 drinks just having to last for 3 nights in a row (an offer still on the go at the Hive I believe, can't imagine the state of the spirit they serve up for that price...).

Was in Spoons George St after derby. Double AU Vodka was more expensive than 2 singles 🙄

I worked in Glasgow for 3 months in about the year 2000, Bonkers wasn't named that for nothing, without doubt one of the craziest places I've ever set foot in

I remember coming back from the evening racing at Ayr in about 1995 (was staying through there and working at Cowglen) and we wandered in to there just as Right Said Fred were about to start a live set! 😳

Establishment on a Thursday night was 50p a vodka, £1 a double etc...

Stereo was the same, until establishment folded and they doubled the prices! Both long gone now.

Did they have purchase limits on the offer, or work on a go slow from 9:45?

I was in a bar in Birmingham earlier in the year that had a cocktail deal that ended at 9pm. Went to the bar at 8:45, 1 server who was taking an age to do anything (it was a quiet hotel bar) and he didn't serve me until after 9. :boohoo:

No purchase limits. Once at about 9.50 pm. I bought a round. It was a minimum of 10 bottles. Put the bottles on the table, then for some reason I leaned on the table. Spilt the lot🙄

    "For some reason"?

Is there the slightest possibility you may have had a bottle or two to drink prior to this horrible incident!?

For a very short period of time (got to be around 2003/2004) Gaia on King Stables Road done £20 (I think) on the door and all drinks inside were free. The con was they only had two or three people on the bars for the whole club. Think that got shut down pretty quickly.

Always some horrific spirits that were probably concocted in a shed, not that it mattered.

As I got a little older I think I used to buy beers or VKs for a still ridiculously cheap amount.

I remember Establishment would serve a quadruple vodka on 50p a drink night. £2 and it came in a pint glass. Red Square vodka iirc.
