Foot of the Walk Wetherspoons closing date.

3rd November according to Edinburgh Live, being taken over as a Sports Bar, I doubt that the prices will remain the same. 😥

Quite a sore one for a lot of Leith's old timers.

I agree and was saying that to someone the other day who was rejoicing in this news.

I'm no lover of Wetherspoons but the Foot of the Walk has a cask beer for £1.99 a pint (usually Belhaven 80) and you can get fish and chips and a pint for a tenner. A fair few of their regulars will now be forced to go to bars that are charging £4.50 minimum a pint or will just start having a beer in the house and losing their social contact altogether.

Pubs like that serve a purpose and on the limited occasions I was in it was nowhere near as bad as some people make out.

Spent a good few hours in there after the cup parade in 2016.

Echo what the others have said but the closure of these "Clansman" type pubs for older locals is a real shame.

I really don't get the snobby attitude towards 'Spoons pubs, they serve their purpose, and do it well enough in most places.

It's my old boys local with his pals, I give him pelters all the time about it as he could afford to drink anywhere he wants but he loves the fact you could get a pint for £2, there is one dude he talks to every week who comes down from Corstorphine every week as like his day out and about and he gets company, feel sorry for those people and folk with kids that used it as a cheaper option to go out for a meal

I don't have a problem with Spoons, I don't go often but when I do you know what you are getting and it serves a purpose

I don’t get it either, see a lot of folk online slagging off folk who use Spoons, trying to use the fact they pay double or more in other pubs as some sort of status symbol! Don’t get me started on the other ill informed idiots who try to use what happened to Spoons staff during lockdown as an excuse to boycott them. Taken in by misleading headlines, when in fact the staff were paid and treated very fairly.

My problem is I can't abide the thought of lining Tim Martin's pockets. In much the same way I won't buy a Dyson product.
Probably not for this forum, though.

I'm the same, I won't go to Wetherspoons because Tim Martin's a twat, no other reason.

The staff were paid, some eventually (I know of one who worked at the White Lady, Corstorphine, that had to wait a while for back pay and nearly lost his flat) but Tim Martin did make it clear that he'd only pay the furlough money provided by the government (80%?) and not top it up like many other employers.
He was quoted by the media telling his staff that if they were offered jobs at a supermarket then he'd understand if they wanted to take it. That was the quote put out, the reality was staff were encouraged to look elsewhere as it was made clear there was no guarantees or certainties in the business (I'm unsure many businesses did know what was happening at the time). You could argue he was being ruthlessly honest but during those times, some staff were just looking for reassurances, not words that could be twisted as "off you pop!".

Regardless, my personal dislike of the business is what they do to local companies. CAMRA for some reason enjoy holding their meetings in Wetherspoons (fair enough) but along with those meetings, Wetherspoons regularly hold "meet the brewer" nights where brewers are encouraged to bring along pin kegs (½ firkin) for free which the pub sells at a lower than normal price to the punters. If the pub takes the beer on, the brewer is put under pressure to supply a decent quantity at a low price, and although they do eventually get paid, the emphasis has to be on the eventually.
After speaking to and finding this out from a very small brewer from Bo'ness, I decided to be a little more discerning with my pub visits.
Annoyingly, this means I don't go to The Booking Office on Waverley Bridge anymore. They used to always have a decent gin selection (there's only so much beer a guy can drink) and there was a bar-man there who was top drawer, knew his stuff and worked the bar like a pro!
Regardless, absolute no issue with anyone else who chooses to drink wherever they want. It's a free world.

It must've turned into a long day as I can't remember ever being in there for an early morning pint!🤔😃
