Is that a misprint? Dundee Utd 0 - 9 Celtic?

I’m beginning to feel a little better about the departure of Jack Ross. What the hell is going on there?
Yup. Must be getting sacked tomorrow. I can't think of a worse start to anyone's managerial career than him at Dundee United.

They have also backed him pretty well in the market so no excuses.

I wonder if his backers on here have changed their opinion.

Villa can afford to pay off SG, not sure United can do likewise with Jack
He wouldn’t have gone to United without a watertight contract

Do they also not have a striker, a playmaker, an outfield captain or a strong enough central defence?

Looks like it from about 30 minutes onwards.

I've never actually had one example of a club genuinely unable to pay off a manager. United will lose far more money if they keep getting beat. They will also have cash reserves like most clubs I'd imagine.

Ross did a great job at Hibs and was pushed out the door way too early imo, what he's doing elsewhere has no bearing on his time with us.

Would assume United are sounding out Michael O'Neill

An outfield captain? Strange outdated requirement

Yes he got us 3rd but the next season was a car crash, he was rightly sacked at the time, the club made a huge mistake hiring Maloney. Ross done well at lower level but has struggled at Sunderland, us the 2nd season and now at Dundee United, he seems tactically inept as we seen getting beat by St Johnstone twice in cups.

Nice cherry picking there, I'll leave you with your flawed opinion and not hijack the thread with nonsense about Jack.

    Indeed.

"Turnbull was tactically inept, losing to Celtic about 6 times in cups"

Any manager sounds hopeless if you focus entirely on the negative things they done.

Slightly different given Celtic’s standing in football at the time though no? Losing to St J 4 times in a season the same way each time isn’t really acceptable.

If you judge us purely on results against st Johnstone then yeah. I'd kill for that season again now

if he’d worked out how to play against st johnstone he would have been one of the most successful managers in our history. And that’s a very strange sentence to type and read back, but I stand by it.

You are right. We’d look back fondly and it would have given him more time last season but not sure he’d have turned it around particularly given we are a year on from his sacking and no further forward. We’ll never know now.

When it came down to it he didn't though. Two failed attempts against St Johnstone at Hampden, did we even have a shot on target in the cup final?

Finished 3rd in a season where there were no supporters and every club were crippled financially by the pandemic. That season saw the decline of Aberdeen begin and Hearts not in the league, who battered us a week or two before the football shut down and then beat us after hardly playing a game for 7 months in the semi final.

We qualified for Europe and got slapped about in Croatia. Then we saw the beginning of the end for Ross, 4 points from a possible 27 in his last 9 games. He was leading us into a relegation battle and that was with both Boyle and Nisbet available. Come January when Boyle would have left, who was the only spark we had those few months, it would have got messy.

Sacking him was absolutely the right thing to do. I think that is being backed up with his Dundee Utd form even after the money they have put towards new signings this summer. 5 points from his last 13 league games as a manager. Due another sack and I doubt he will get another top 6 six job in Scotland again. My guess will be following the journey of someone like Paul Hartley, managing in the lower division or somewhere like League 2 in England.

I realise that. That’s what I meant when I said it was a strange sentence. The very idea that St Johnstone were the only thing standing between Jack Ross and an exceptional place in Hibs history is mind boggling. Yet it’s true.

two trophies and a third place finish would have put him on a very high pedestal

    Quite a few it seems
It’s a disgrace Premier have taken Rangers v QOS as their live game tonight. Annan v Aberdeen would have been a better pick

Really depressing when you see the ties, and we’re not even in the draw

Premier Sports is essentially Rangers/Celtic TV.

A bottom six finish when he really didn’t have all that much ground to make up to get top 6, a 3rd place finish which was good, no arguments there and then leading us to the bottom 6 again and a sacking. A few really good results but easily more really bad ones.

I’m not sure in what world that can be described as great.

We should be protesting when ever we are on. Premier sports is ******ing s*** over thier microphones like Leeds do to TV companies.

Their rugby league stuff is top notch though.

I was always quietly impressed with the number of games we got on premier sports, and the quality of the coverage.

I always got much more value from that subscription than so hot from the more prestigious ones. Plenty of elite football that J have zero interest in watching.
