Let’s be thankful we all had mums who took responsibility for their children eh? We can all agree on that one. Night all
Hope your away to watch Vera drake.

Abortions will never stop that is just stupid, safe abortions will

If banning abortions stops abortions they should ban all guns in America. Oh but wait they said banning guns is pointless because people will still use them

For your information no mother has ever killed their unborn child. It's a legal impossibility.

One of the darkest days for women’s rights in my lifetime. Obviously the immediate consequences will be suffered by women in the US - but this will embolden anti-abortion & anti-women forces in other countries too. Solidarity doesn’t feel enough right now - but it is necessary

So if a woman is raped at gunpoint and becomes pregnant, the gun is the most protected party in that situation

Somewhere between all the wee digs there is a half decent moral debate going on here.

    A sad day.

Abortion exists and has done for centuries. This doesn't rid certain states of abortion, it only removes access to safe abortion.

I always argue you don't have to like the action of abortion or the outcome, you can argue about what is a reasonable 'cut off' for when it should be permitted and you can argue that all other avenues of support should be offered first; however it is still something that is a necessity in some cases and a choice in others and as such should be available in a safe and supportive environment.

Pro lifers are pro gun in the main, so they fully believe in the rights of children to live unless they’re shot, in which case the gun wins.

It’s like a perverse game of Rock Paper Scissors.

And pro-death penalty. Strange for such pro-life 'Christians'.

This agenda is about controlling women. What's the next target of the fundamentalists? Contraception, gay marriage, even interracial marriage could be vulnerable to being sent back to the individual states:

What the SC Justices who voted to overturn Roe v Wade said about it during their confirmation hearings. Strange...

Just to be clear on this, by going after Lawrence vs Texas 2003 Clarence Thomas is calling for a judgement on whether or not gay sex should be illegal. Organs Hungary or new Poland hasn’t even gone that far. That’s the company the GOP is keeping. It’s all nice and everything to have friendly debates online about abortion rights, gay rights, black right to vote, but FFS if you support all of that I reserve the right to call you a ****ing racist, a homophobe and a misogynist. And I don’t think you’ve got a leg to stand on. (Not directed at the quoted poster)…

Yes, you're right. Thomas is going beyond same sex marriage and is going after 'sodomy'. Would that mean lesbian relationships would be allowed, but male relationships illegal?

    Totally crackpot.

i was thinking earlier if any of the SC were appointed by that vile fake tan monster Trump then did a little google just now, things are clearer especially that 4th one who was giving advice to his wife who got a mention in the hearings the last week for assisting Trump in trying to get the voting stopped/overturned.

P.S. i also remember that slimebag Kavanaugh as well

2 woman hit by a car at a pro choice rally in the US

2 dead outside a oslo gay bar from a random gunman

But for some reason are almost never referenced as terrorists in reporting. That's a huge part of the problem. Painting these people as a 'lone wolf' or a 'crazed gunman' downplays the fact that this is a loosely organised group of extreme right wing nutjobs, primarily male. Emoboldened by the success of the likes of Trump and Bolsonaro they are increasingly dangerous.

I'm curious as to what Venn diagram of the relationship of US states that were pro-life, pro-gun control and pro-death penalty?
I'm guessing, without checking, it would resemble an RAF roundel!

What about sodomy in opposite-sex couples?

Given that the dictionary definition of sodomy includes oral sex, many gay women would also be criminalised.

My question would be, as it always has been in some US States, how would that be policed?

Check out the other thread on the topic: the states where execution is legal are almost identical to the ones where abortion is now illegal.

Thought as much, looks like Ozyhibby done the homework I set out for him 😉

Indeed. It's a matter of taking the fundamentalist Christian view that sex is sinful, to the extreme. 18th century American Puritanism to be revived in 2022, in some attempt to put the toothpaste back in the tube. It's insane and impossible to police. Justice Thomas is proposing that all equality rights won via the Fourteenth Amendment be challenged, but with one exception: interracial marriage. He didn't mention that one, though, of course, the fact he is a black man married to a white woman would be coincidental. Stripping others of their legal rights is fine, but he draws the line when it would affect him. However, interracial marriage will be challenged in the same way - advocates will claim it's a states rights issue and isn't constitutionally guaranteed. If that issue reaches the SC, what will Thomas do? He is a very dodgy and unpleasant guy. His wife is currently deeply implicated in the attempt to overturn Biden's win.

I wonder what the progressives and liberals who refused to vote for Clinton are feeling right now?

The issue with US presidential elections is you aren't just voting for a 4 or 8 year period, you are voting for them potentially having the ability to shape the future of the country for decades, particularly in the case of Trump who was able to rebalance the ideology of the Supreme Court.

This ruling would never have happened had Clinton been the 45th US President. For all her many faults she would have secured a liberal, relatively speaking, majority among Supreme Court justices for a generation.

Plus the electoral college played a big role again. Clinton got more votes, but Trump won the EC.

Northern Ireland isn’t much better. Although it’s legal now due to it being imposed by the UK govt when the DUP collapsed the assembly, they have managed to not fund any service at all so it’s like it’s banned. Most still travel to mainland UK.

You really won't believe this. A debate between the Republican primary candidates for Arizona governor. This is the GOP in 2022, the party expected to win control of Congress this November in the most powerful country on earth. We like to laugh at how stupid and crazy Americans are, but this is really disturbing:
