    Polio

I see that there is some polio virus turned up in the London sewage system.

Seriously worrying if it's not isolated

Not really worrying as kids are already vaccinated for this, so they expect no real spread in the community. Mainly looking at Nigerian, Afghani communities where they still use live virus.

Reminder to everyone to vaccinate their kids, there isn't microchips in them

The target rate for polio vaccination in London is below the national average according to BBC health reporter. Can't mind the stats he gave, wasn't a huge percentage below from what I can remember. Anyhow, there will now be a push to encourage the families of unvaccinated kids to come forward.

Target is 95% but only 86% of children in London have had it.

86% is actually staggering. I just cannot get my head around that.

I honestly think a lot of people just have no lived experience of how devastating these illnesses we now have vaccines for once were.

Not many people will know about iron lungs beyond it being a Radiohead song or some black and white image from a news report. Likewise measles, TB, diptheria, tetanus, rubella, whooping cough etc are just words to some people. Vaccination is something of a medical miracle but arguably the biggest side effect of it is complacency. Diseases become so rare or so reduced in severity that people start to think it's nothing to worry about and just don't bother or are so unaware of the impact of these 'mild' illnesses they believe the vaccine conspiracies about vaccination being worse than the illness itself.

There has been a rampant anti-vaxer movement growing since the notorious Wakefield 1998 'study' into the MMR vaccine and it's non existent links to autism (now known as the Lancet MMR Autism fraud). Andrew Wakefield has been struck off since his study was released and he became the poster boy for the anti vax movement, helped along the way by 'celebrities' like Jenny McCarthey and a number of 'doctors' who just so happen to sell alternatives to vaccines, they have managed to turn a significant number of people into anti-vaxers. This is totally a first world problem as mothers in Africa will walk 100 kilometres with their kids just so they can get them vaccinated as they see the destruction diseases that barely register in the first world do to kids in the 3rd world. Across the US especially and here in the UK and France the levels of vaccination against diseases almost wiped out are falling below the levels required for immunity. This is not going to be the last story like this and we will see the return of kids dying from preventable diseases just because their parents are scientifically illiterate and easily lead by charlatans.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Plenty of twatty anti-vaxxers in North London, I’m afraid.
