By the time they cordoned the Cave off ,put benches in and increased prices ..the Cave was rarely full once that happened.
i had by then drifted to main terracing and sometimes North Enclosure.(older bams there than in the old Cave !)

    The match in question...
There was a bit of battling that day,(not unusual back then) but not sure thats the reason for gaps in the Cave.
It was a significant match for oldco,so a lot of Hibby's might have just given it a miss that day.
The North Enclosure ( under the North Wing Stand ) was the place to be for the more mature radge

    Hibees ! Hibees !

Stood in there on many occasions then joined the older ranges in the North Stand. Still remember the smell of that area. It lives with you for ever

Still miss the old North stand and some of the characters who frequented it. Had a season book in there for a good few years before moving to other parts of the ground.
Have kept my first few season books from '71 onwards. The first one cost me £6. Always kept the same seat - row C seat 58.

This was HIBS’ last home match of the season in a match played in a howling gale

HIBS had the wind behind them in the first half so all roads led to Roy Baines in the Celtic goal

Pat Stanton made an emotional first return to Easter Road as a Celtic player

Baines pulled off save after save including one outstanding save from Derek Spalding but the expected goal arrived on 35 minutes when Ally MacLeod capitalised on excellent work by Des Bremner and Ally Scott and wasted no time in burying his shot low past Baines

Celtic equalised within a minute when Johnny Gibson playing his first and only game for Celtic crossed for Ronnie Glavin to head past Mike McDonald

Hibs fought back in the second half with an Alex Cropley penalty a strike from Arthur Duncan and a first goal for the club from Joe Harper

The result became even more galling when news filtered through that fellow Championship contenders Celtic could only draw with lowly Dumbarton at Celtic Park

Hamish had a pub called Goalies !!
    Just reading his wiki page.
    Some character,the bold Hamish.
Dundee Utd's penalty taker of course.

I am sure that I read in one of the Hibs books that the 1923 cup final was the tipping point as to when Celtic finally became the Irish people's club. Up until then many weegie Irish people still followed Hibs but a lack of ambition from us spelt the change.

Hibs were on a mission to claim their place as the Premier Irish club in Scotland

This was the perfect opportunity to start this process against the upstart offspring Celtic

Hibs had played all their matches in the tournament in Edinburgh winning a tight semifinal 1-0 against Third Lanark at Tynecastle

Hibs took 13000 through to Glasgow for the final with a further 17000 from the West boosting their number to 30000 to cheer on the original greens

Hibs were the better team in the first half but couldn’t make the breakthrough The second half started in the same format but Celtic had their spell of pressure and scored from a corner

Hibs’ curse struck in the last minute when a goalbound shot struck a Celtic hand on the goalline The Hibs players appealed for a penalty but the Referee refused to give it

Not for the first time Hibs just never got the luck they needed

Hibs would return to Hampden one season later only to lose to Airdrieonians

    https://youtu.be/YfCKguT3fAM

Hibs who head been head and shoulders the best team in the League today won promotion back to the Premier League thanks to a masterclass from the Little Magician Russell Latapy

Involved in everything from the kick off Latapy terrorised the Hamilton defence at their temporary home of Partick Thistle’s Firhill

Jinking and weaving his one touch football he set up a chance for Mixu Paatelainen who cannoned his shot off the base of the Accies post

News then filtered through that nearest rivals Falkirk were a goal down

Latapy scored his first in 33 minutes when he ghosted through the Accies defence exchanging a one two with Paatelainen on the edge of the box before sending an unstoppable right footed shot into the goalkeeper’s bottom left hand corner

The second came after 51 minutes Paatelainen released Latapy clear on the right hand side of the box The wee man checked back dipped his shoulder and rifled a left footed shot past Ian MacFarlane

Latapy’s was a virtuoso performance a display way above this League an exhibition of pace control and precision passing

He blotted his copybook however when Stevie Crawford was hauled down inside the box by Neil Oliver and he made a rather lame attempt at grabbing his first hat-trick in Scottish Football from the resultant spot kick

The PA system pleaded with the massed HIBS fans not to invade the pitch at the final whistle and as you know we don’t need to be told twice

The Hibees were back to their rightful place at the top table of Scotland’s football elite and the fans marked the achievement at the final whistle with a stirring rendition of YNWA possibly for the last time

    3/4/1993 Scottish Cup Semi Final

    Hibernian 0 v 1 Aberdeen

The HIBS fans took over the area of Tynecastle normally reserved for Hearts fans for this fiercely competitive Scottish Cup Semi Final

Hibs were without Mickey Weir so the front two of Keith Wright and Darren Jackson had to live off scraps the best chance falling to Wright in the first half who tested Theo Snelders who rose to the challenge pulling off a tremendous save

Into the second half and HIBS were undone when Gary Smith fed Paul Kane down the left who played the ball inside the box to Scott Booth who beat Budgie at his near post

HIBS brought on Gareth Evans and roared on by the massed Hibees dominated the remainder of the match but found it impossible to breach the Dons defence in which Alex McLeish was superb and Snelders was inspired pulling off one fantastic save from Evans that appeared to be going into the net through a forest of legs at the death but Snelders who must have been unsighted somehow got a hand to it and turned the ball around the post

3/4/1963 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Quarter Final Leg 2

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Valencia (Agg 2-6)

    Preston
    Baker

Hibs regained some pride after their 0-5 first leg defeat racing into a 2-0 lead inside the first 24 minutes to give their Spanish opponents a fright

Tommy Preston opened the scoring on 10 minutes from an Eric Stevenson cross Valencia tried to fight back but Joe Davin blocked a Nunes piledriver with his body

In 24 minutes a shock looked on the cards Jimmy O’Rourke fed John Grant and his cross was headed firmly into the net by Gerry Baker

Hibs smelling blood continued to pile forward but lost a soft goal just before the interval when Nunes found himself unmarked in the box and wasted no time in dispatching the hall into the net

HIBS continued to dominate the second half inspired by their two first half strikes the closest they came when Eric Stevenson scored direct from a free-kick but it was disallowed as the Referee had indicated that the award was indirect

A 20 yard drive by Grant had Zamora stretching and in a separate incident Gerry Baker fouled Verdu He promptly offered his hand in apology It was not accepted by the Spaniard and the crowd howled their disapproval

Valencia were current holders of the trophy having defeated Barcelona in the final and would go on to win the trophy in this year

    Dundee United 2 v 2 Hibernian

    Nish 6 10

Hibs blew a glorious opportunity to defeat Craig Levein’s Dundee United at Tannadice

Colin Nish opened the scoring in 6 minutes when he fired in a 30 yard screamer into Lakasz Zaluska’s top corner

He added a second minutes later when Prince Bauben was woefully short with a defensive header back to his goalkeeper

Hibs should have been out of sight in the first twenty minutes Nish had a volley saved by the United keeper and followed that up by totally miscuing a free header in front of goal when set up by Steven Fletcher sending the ball wide of the target Fletcher then missed an easy chance when set up by Nish

United were handed a lifeline when Chris Hogg was deemed to have fouled Feeney in the box but former United favourite Gregorz Szamotulski sprung cat-like to turn away Craig Conway’s penalty kick for a corner

Into the second half and Fletcher who had scored his first Scotland goal on Wednesday night against Iceland forced Zaluska into a brilliant save before United pulled one back when Gary Kenneth headed home a Paul Dixon cross

United continued to put a creaking HIBS defence under pressure and just when it looked as though HIBS had weathered the storm United got their reward when substitute David Goodwillie stabbed the ball over the line in the last minute following a late stramash in the box

    Hearts 1 v 2 HIBS

    Horgan 2

Hibs had not beaten Hearts in ten attempts at Tiny

Hearts dominated the early exchanges with Olly Lees free kick hitting the post before he crossed for Peter Haring to head home the opener on 25 minutes from a corner

Daryl Horgan equalised when he slid home a low cross following good work from Marc McNulty on the left despite Hearts claims that the HIBS centre forward was initially in an offside position

In the 56 th minute HIBS took the lead following a wonderful move full of fast intricate accurate pacy passing between Horgan Mallan and Kamberi which ended up with Horgan dispatching a low left foot drive into the bottom right hand corner of Bobby Zlamals net cue wild scenes in the School End

His goals apart Daryl Horgan was outstanding all day

McNulty should have made it three two minutes later with a header and brought out a great save from Zlamal in the dying minutes

The match will be remembered for the smoke bombs and the coconut on the pitch but the highlight for me was Darren MacGregors tackle on Peter Haring

This was HIBS first win at Tiny since 2013 and saw them jump above Hearts to finish in fifth place pre split but sadly that was to be their last win of the season

    Dumbarton 0 v 2 HIBS

    Irvine
    Rice

Following on from the superb display at Tynecastle in midweek where two late goals from Joe McBride rescued an unexpected but welcome point HIBS still found themselves locked perilously close to the foot of the division and faced a tricky and nervy away fixture at fellow strugglers Dumbarton

Such was the sense of urgency felt by the HIBS Board to turn around this situation that they put on buses for the large travelling support @ fifty pence per head

I actually attended this game hard to believe it was 35 years ago I can still feel the tension and nervousness in the air there was a huge HIBS support and Old Boghead Park was a dump of a ground with a pitch to match like a bog that had gone hard and bumpy

Looking at our team you wondered why we were at the bottom of the league?

Second half goals from Irvine and Rice would ease the Hibee nerves but they were not out of the woods yet back in the days of the old top ten the bottom two teams went down

A home draw to Dundee United 1-1 followed by an inexplicable 0-4 reverse at home to St Mirren a 2-1 away win at Morton followed up by a last day 1-0 win over Rangers scorer Paul Kane ensured that HIBS finished in eighth place eight points clear of the relegated Dumbarton with Morton picking up the wooden spoon

There was something happening down Easter Road way the Tornadoes were starting to take shape but still not quite as we know it

Sadly this was to be the Baker Boys last goal for HIBS

I actually attended his last game for HIBS a Scottish Cup Semi Final versus Rangers in front of a crowd of 76174 on a hot sunny Saturday afternoon at Hampden one week after the St Johnstone game

Hibs started nervously and found themselves down to an Alex MacDonald goal but second half HIBS rallied Peter McCloy parried a Baker shot into the path of ORourke who had no hesitation in burying the ball into the back of the net to silence the large Rangers support

The replay took place two weeks later and HIBS blew Rangers away with a display of fast attacking football Stanton opening the scoring after 12 minutes and Alex Edwards completed the scoring after dispatching a Hazel knockdown into the net

It was a superb display from HIBS and Rangers could not compete with the accuracy and speed of the Hibernian passing in a game HIBS totally dominated from start to finish Ole! Ole!

I do not think any of the Supporters Buses returned to Edinburgh with their windows in tact

Both of these games made a young Billyhibs realise what a horrible and despicable club Rangers really were and they certainly did not like it up em!

Mature, sensible signature required for responsible position. Good prospects for the right candidate. Apply within.

    Scottish League Championship 9/4/2016

    Alloa 1 v 0 HIBS

Weeks away from immortality HIBS continued to stutter in the League losing this encounter to a Duffy goal that had shades of England 1966 written all over it and was doubtful if it had actually crossed the line

HIBS failed to convert chances that fell to Hanlon Gray Stokes Keatings and Cummings against Jack Ross’s basement boys before Oxley saved a late strike from Duffy

Hibs : Oxley Gray and Gunnarsson Hanlon Stevenson and Fyvie Henderson McGinn Keatings Cummings and Stokes

Subs: Boyle for Keatings 62 Dagnall for Cummings 75

Unused : Bartley Handling MacGregor Thomson and Virtanen

    Att: 1364

    Scottish League SPL 9/4/2011

    Aberdeen 0 v 1 Hibernian

    Sodje 15

A first half strike from Akpo Sodje on 15 minutes gave Aberdeen their third successive defeat in seven days

The dons tried to get back on terms Chris Maguire hitting the post and HIBS goalkeeper Mark Brown pushing a second point blank Maguire effort onto the upright Josh Maginnis had a header hit the underside of the bar but the Edinburgh side survived late Dons pressure to end a run of three games without a win

Hibs : Brown Hanlon Stephens Booth Towell and Stevenson Thornhill Miller Palsson Vaz Te and Sodje

Subs: Nish for Sodje 57 Wootherspoon for Vaz Te 57 Murray for Stevenson 74

Unused: Divis Hart Scott and Duffy

Scottish Cup Semi Final Replay 9/4/1958

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Rangers

    Turnbull pen
    Fraser

This Scottish Cup Semi Final replay took place the midweek after a thrilling 2-2 draw between the teams at Hampden Aitken and Preston being the HIBS heroes

Hibs had been going through a few extra training sessions in the days before the tie and the extra effort paid off as they triumphed 2-1 and progressed to the final where they would play Clyde

The replay goals were scored by Turnbull from the spot and Fraser but every single player that night was a hero and the support travelled back to Edinburgh singing their praises It had been 56 years since HIBS lifted that trophy and the win against Rangers gave them their first chance to do so since they lost 2-1 in the 1947 final versus Aberdeen

Hibs: Leslie Grant McClelland Turnbull Paterson Baxter Fraser Aitken Baker Preston and Ormond

Scottish Cup Semi Final Replay 9/4/1924

    Hibs 1 v 0 Aberdeen

    Dens Park

Following a 0-0 draw the replay was once again staged at Dens Park Again it was a hard entertaining game with both teams opening up a bit which favoured Hibernian but Willie Harper still had to pull off some fine saves one of which showed Harper to be the best goalkeeper in Scotland The Hibees put Aberdeen under a lot of pressure which mounted as the match got older in 85 minutes Dunn’s shot hit the upright with great force It was a first time effort and easily the best shot of the match Then two minutes later Harry Ritchie went on an unstoppable run down the right wing and the Aberdeen goalkeeper could not hold his thunderbolt shot leaving Darkie Walker to ram home the winning goal

HIBS opponents in the final were to be Airdrie a highly talented team who were only just pipped by Rangers for the championship in this season

Hibs: Harper McGinnigle Templeton Kerr Miller Shaw Ritchie Dunn Murray Halligan and Walker

Hibs trailed 1-3 at half-time but clawed it back to 3-3 United added another two before Pat Stanton’s late counter

Scorers for United Dennis Gillespie 12 22 Finn Dossing 37 52 and Ian Mitchell penalty 61

According to reports at the time United’s fourth goal was miles offside and Mitchell’s penalty was taken twice as keeper Thomson Allan was deemed to have moved

Big Bad John McNamee was booked in the fracas surrounding the United penalty after an altercation with Finn Dossing that convinced him that he was the victim of a witch-hunt by Scottish Refs

The cup replay was I’m pretty sure an afternoon game not an evening one.Hibs played well against a good Rangers side. Rangers moaned for years about a Ralph Brand goal being chalked off because he’d punched the ball out of Leslie’s hands.
