An easy victory for HIBS on a wind swept Easter Road

Young Kenny Miller was alert and rushed into the box to head home the opener after only two minutes

Matty Jack gave Dunfermline a lifeline after 30 minutes when he was uncharacteristically short with a pass-back and could only watch in horror as David Graham waltzed around Colgan to fire home the equaliser

Grant Brebner eased the hibee nerves just before half-time when he restored HIBS’ lead

Second half and HIBS gave a debut to young Ian Murray who scored with his first touch firing home from close range after a Kenny Miller effort had been blocked on the line

HIBS now stepped up the pressure as the wind increased and it was obvious that poor Dunfermline were being outclassed

Hibs knocked out Premier League St Johnstone after a titanic struggle at a cold and snowy Tynecastle Park

Hibs took the lead on the half hour when Jason Cummings calmly rolled in a controversial penalty award

Hibs’ delight was short lived however as ex hibee David Wotherspoon swung in a superb ball and Joe Shaughnessy angled a header into Mark Oxley’s top left hand corner

Into the second half and Simon Lappin rattled Oxley’s crossbar with a freekick as the game swung from end to end

With 15 minutes to go John McGinn scored with a low drive from distance as HIBS started to dominate

The Perth side never gave up with Oxley tipping over another Shaughnessy header and the ineffective Michael O’Halloran blasting over from a decent position

Darren Jackson then thought Leighton was coming back on took off his goalie top and took up a forward position The Referee refused to allow Leighton to return to the field of play Hibs never had a goalie and Celtic scored

After consulting with his linesman the goal was ruled out and Leighton took up his position in goal

This HIBS win was without difficulty as a hostile Ibrox bid for striker Derek Riordan resulted in Deeks starting off on the bench and midfield maestro Kevin Thomson was carried off on a stretcher after only 7 minutes

Hibs achieved their game plan of getting to half-time 0-0 then all hell broke loose

Ivan Sproule hung up a cross to the far post - over Ian Murray- and Garry O’Connor gleefully headed home

O’Connor then flicked a long through ball into the path of Ivan Sproule who buried a low shot into the corner of the net from 18 yards

This match saw four penalties awarded but from a HIBS point of view is best remembered for Eddie Turnbull’s hat-trick of penalties

Eddie Turnbull scored his first penalty when McGrory fouled Reilly in the box after 20 minutes

Celtic were then awarded a penalty that Bobby Collins had to take twice and converted following an infringement

HIBS then lost Tommy Younger to injury and Willie Clark had to take over in goal leaving HIBS down to 10 men

Just before half-time that man McGrory again pulled Bobby Johnstone down in the box step forward Ned to do the needful

Five minutes into the second half and Gordon Smith set up Turnbull for a tap in to complete his hat-trick

Turnbull completed his hat-trick of penalties 20 minutes from the end to earn a remarkable victory against all the odds

After knocking out Celtic injury ravaged HIBS were up against it against Rangers at rain lashed Hampden Park

Rangers started the better and after 27 minutes Daniel Andersson upended Ronald De Boer in the penalty box but he quickly redeemed himself with a fine one handed save from Arteta’s spot kick

Rangers were not to be denied however and Michael Mols swept Rangers into the lead just before half-time from 15 yards after a defence splitting pass from Ross

Into the second half and play raged from end to end Hibs brought on Stephen Dobbie with 13 minutes to go and he equalised within a minute latching on to a Derek Riordan pass and lashing the ball home from 12 yards

HIBS were galvanised as they went for the kill Fernando Ricksen was lucky to escape punishment when he elbowed Riordan in the face and Garry O’Connor had a decent claim for a penalty waved away

HIBS pushed forward in the first period of extra time but could not prise open the Rangers defence Into the second period and HIBS survived two mass scrambles in their own box with goal hero Dobbie booting a ball off the goalline

Onto penalties and both keepers had two fine saves apiece with Averladze blazing over the crossbar and Mattius Doumbe hitting the woodwork

    7/2/2016 Scottish Cup Round 5

    Hearts 2 v 2 Hibernian

    Cummings 80
    Hanlon 90+1

Hibs looking down and out against their Premiership rivals famously came back from the dead to live to fight another day

In the first half it was HIBS who had the better of the early play with McGinn testing Neil Alexander with a drive and Stokesy heading just over from a corner

Things changed on the half hour however when Dylan McGeouch had to leave the field of play due to injury giving yet another HIBS debut to Kevin Thomson

Minutes later and Hearts were two up Djoum fired in an excocet that flew past Mark Oxley at a rate of knots following a poor clearance then Sam Nicholson brought down a Callum Paterson cross in the box on his chest and repeated the dose

Into the second half and HIBS showing true character started to dominate with Bartley bossing the midfield pegging Hearts back and Gunnarsson on for SDG went close with a header and Stokesy smashed one into the side net

Just when it looked as though all HIBS’ pressure would come to nothing Liam Henderson dinked in a cross and Jason Cummings sent in a looping header off his new gelled barnet up and over Alexander and in at his back post

HIBS continued to press for the equaliser and into stoppage time Alexander thought he had done enough at a corner when he repelled Darren McGregor’s header but Paul Hanlon was alive to the rebound and slid the ball home through a forest of legs Cue joyful celebrations in the School End

Hearts were not done however and in true Gorgie tradition the stoppage time came from nowhere Gunnarsson managed to clear a defensive header off his own crossbar and midfield dynamo Kevin Thomson managed to boot a last minute net bound Blazej Augustyn effort off the line

HIBS would win the Scottish Cup in this season

    Glory! Glory!

    7/2/1920 Scottish Cup

    Armadale Thistle 1 v 0 Hibernian

Hibs were on the end of a Scottish Cup shock in this match

Although fielding a strong side - many of the HIBS team would go on to play in the 1923 and 1924 Scottish Cup Finals - HIBS were unable to make the most of the many chances created and Armadale scored the winner in one of their rare forays up the Park

Worth mentioning that this was a season of Cup shocks :

Armadale also saw off Clyde ( a decent side then) and Ayr United before losing out to eventual winners Kilmarnock who beat shock troops Albion Rovers ( who had knocked out the mighty Rangers in the semi final ) in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park in front of 96000 fans

Not longed moved to Singapore. It is Chinese New Year's Eve. I meet a beautiful and spend the day with her. In evening I settle down to watch the game. At 2-0 I get into my pajamas. First we get a goal back. Watching on Hibs TV, Hibs get a corner. A text flashes in from a friend. I know what is coming. Clothes on I head for the corner bar and get very drunk much to the amusement of the locals, seeing in Chinese New Year singing Hibs songs.

102342 fans fillied Ibrox to watch this intriguing battle of Rangers’ Iron Curtain Defence versus the imperious Famous Five

Simpson gave the Scottish Cup holders an early lead and Rangers retreated into their shell putting up their defensive wall

This enabled HIBS who had got off to a nervous start to find their rhythm and get their passing game together HIBS equalised just before half-time when Gordon Smith met an Ormond cross on the volley and the ball fairly flew into the Rangers net

Into the second half and HIBS obviously hadn’t learned their lesson from the first half when Simpson scored his and Rangers’ second

Fatally Rangers reverted to type and flooded their defence

HIBS were known for their flexibility and imagination and took the game by the scruff of the neck

Eddie Turnbull equalised with one of his cannonball specials and Rangers now found themselves in a quandary do they stick or twist? Problem was they were now pinned back into their own half unable to get out as the green and white jerseys swarmed around their box

With nine minutes to go HIBS sealed their win

Hibs had a freekick outside the Rangers box Rangers put up a nine man wall Eddie Turnbull lined up for a thunderbolt but he played the ball short to Willie Ormond who quickly passed it to Johnstone who fired home from a tight angle

    https://youtu.be/20yNTYTaBgM

This game was played at a sodden Hampden Park as Celtic Park was undergoing renovations

Celtic took the lead when Celtic Captain John Collins fired home after 5 minutes.

Jim Leighton thought he had saved the initial attempt but he didn’t get enough on it and watched in agony as it clipped the post on the way in

Hibs equalised when last season’s Celtic FC top scorer Pat McGinlay a £425000 signing in November fired home past Pat Bonnar.

A goal he celebrated by giving Celtic Manager Tommy Burns a long satisfied stare

Celtic were struggling with Kevin Harper’s pace the young striker taking up good position but squandering any chances that came his way

Celtic took the lead early into the second half when Willie Falconer expertly headed home a John Collins cross giving Jim Leighton no chance

Hibs replaced Joe Tortolano with Mark McGraw with ten minutes to go and this change brought immediate rewards when the young striker fired home from the edge of the box past the unsighted Bonnar following a HIBS corner

    12/2/1887 Scottish Cup Final

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Dumbarton

    Montgomery
    Groves

Green shirted Hibernian were first onto the park led by their captain James McGhee and they received a rapturous welcome while Dumbarton in their blue and white striped jerseys were politely welcomed by their supporters who only numbered a few thousand

Hibernian won the toss booked the wind and Dumbarton kicked off on a slippery surface which was very hard underneath Play swung from end to end with defences on top When the forwards did get a chance their shooting was wild and the goalkeepers had very few saves to make Near the end of the first half play became rough and the Referee was kept busy

Play continued in a similar fashion in the second half up until the 60th minute when Aitken put Dumbarton ahead with an unsaveable shot after which they used spoiling tactics to try and hold on to their lead This was a mistake as the Irish crowd roared Hibernian on to one of their famous fight-backs

The forwards responded with some brilliant play and a strong run and angled shot from Phil Clarke which Dumbarton’s international goalkeeper could not hold allowed James Montgomery to follow through and fire home the equaliser

The green Jerseys now went all out for the winner and dominated the game with their strength and skill Following a Dumbarton corner the defence cleverly played the ball to Paddy Lafferty who fed Willie Groves and went on a decoy run down the right wing ‘Darling’ Willie Groves then went on one of his famous mazy dribbling runs that took him right into the heart of the Dumbarton defence and he coolly hit the ball home while Dumbarton vainly tried to claim offside

The celebrating on the terraces was wild For the last ten minutes of the game the noise was indescribable and when the final whistle went the Hibernian players were carried off the field of play shoulder high

There was an air of disbelief about what had just happened Hibernian had done the impossible and had won the greatest prize in Scottish football The poor team from Edinburgh’s Irish neighbourhood had actually won the Scottish Cup

Hibs Tobin Lundy Fagan McGhee McGinn McLaren Montgomery Groves Lafferty Smith and Clarke

1887 Hibs won the Scottish Cup for the first time on this day defeating red hot favourites Dumbarton 2-1 in the final thanks to goals from James Montgomery and Darling Willie Groves

Hibs were made to sweat pending an appeal from defeated semi finalists Vale of Leven who accused the Leith club of ‘Professionalism’ citing Willie Groves but this protest was thrown out by the SFA

    Edit:

Willie Groves only appeared for HIBS in the Scottish Cup in the 1886/87 season scoring 10 goals in 8 appearances

Reading that article on the 1887 Scottish Cup win reminded me that Hibs won that hallowed trophy before Hahahahearts or Rangers and before Celtic existed. Always worth remembering a little gem of history like that 👍🏻

What an occasion that would have been!

the description of Hibs winner is amusing. Groves went on a mazy run through the Dumbarton team before beating their keeper. Who exactly were they claiming offside against?!

Back in Edinburgh those who had not travelled to the final received updates on the score by telegraph to establishments such as Paddy McGrails shop 266 Canongate and Higgins Football Arms Hill Place

The news of the victory spread like wildfire through Little Ireland St Mary’s Street Halls became a hive of activity as the CYMS made last minute preparations for the reception of their victorious football team

The pubs and the streets were mobbed with deliriously happy Irish and the paper boys at the Tron and Register House did a roaring trade

Word was received that the team would arrive at Waverley at 10.00pm The station was completely taken over by the cheering throng who carried the Hibernian party shoulder high to a special horse drawn break which was draped with two large banners one proclaiming ‘Welcome Hibernian Winners of the Scottish Cup 1886-87’ and the other ‘God Save Ireland-Hurrah for the Green Jerseys’

Two flute bands the CYMS and the Leith Harp played patriotic Irish tunes and led the break along with the whole mass of supporters out of the station Edinburgh’s non Irish citizens watched in amazement at the antics of the procession as it made its way onto Waverley Bridge along Princes Street and over the North Bridge to the Tron where another immense crowd with the Young Ireland flute band were waiting to welcome them into Little Ireland

With bands playing fans singing and flags flying the parade made its way down the High Street and into St Mary’s Street which glowed eerily from the green limelights that had been placed in every window of every tenement in the Street

A special reception was held in St Mary’s Street Halls where over 1000 members were waiting for the Guests of Honour

I can only think Lafferty might have run offside with his decoy run but no way would Groves be offside
