The 2000 derby rankles. Team v team we should have destroyed them. When Lovell scored the feeling was that at last we'd got going and now we'd see how close we could get to the 6-2 game. It was close to half time, a real booster and I remember bouncing to Rock DJ with strangers as I nipped downstairs at half time.

That was as good as it got though. Don't know if they were complacent. Was the John O'Neil red card game against Rangers (RIP) the week before, or after? Anyway, two big games where the wheels started loosening.
Every derby that whole season bar the 6-2. First one at Tynie was 0-0 - tight game but Agathe rounded the keeper and managed under hit an easy finish to see it cleared off the line.

That 1-1 draw was infuriating - all over them the whole game and a McSwegan wonder strike pulled them level.

Final game at ER, another 0-0 - absolutely all over them, so one sided, but Mixu misses a last minute penalty with a failed Panenka.

Should have won the lot, two of them very handsomely.

Definitely. Distance has let me disassociate the derbies that season, other than 6-2 and NY. Thank you so very much for reminding me :-), but you are absolutely right.

    Ha, apologies

Tbf, I’d take all of that for 6-2. I genuinely experienced a new emotion/level of elation when the sixth went in that night. We’d been due them that for years.

HIBS put on a magnificent performance against the Inter Cities Fairs Cup holders leading 2-0 after 20 minutes and 4-2 with only 6 minutes to go on their home turf

Joe Baker scored the first when goalkeeper Ramillieta came to the edge of his box to clutch a long ball it fell from his grasp and the ever vigilant Joe Baker waltzed round the keeper and coolly slotted the ball into the empty net with his left foot

Things went from bad to worse for Barca in twenty minutes when Johnny MacLeod accepted a pass from Sammy Baird in midfield carried the ball swiftly into the unguarded centre and unleashed a cracking shot from 20 yards that beat Ramillieta all ends up

Cue a crescendo of boos and white hankies all around the Stadium

Barcelona pulled one back following a freekick and HIBS responded just before half-time when Baker struck the upright

Barcelona equalised eight minutes into the second half through Kocsis when he was left unmarked and was able to pick his spot with a header

HIBS continued to press forward and were denied a penalty when MacLeod was brought down inside the box five yards from goal

Hibs took the lead with 18 minutes to go when Tommy Preston rattled in a great left footer that went in off the upright Baker followed up three minutes later when he broke clear and smashed a 25 yarder that cannoned in off the post giving the keeper no chance

Barcelona were now getting the slow hand clap and were getting desperate

With six minutes to go Kocsis pulled one back in a goal mouth scramble to complete his hat-trick and in 89 minutes he split the HIBS defence with a wonderful pass for Evaristo to fire home

Hibs recorded a League double over Rangers in this season

Hibs were without flu victim Bobby Baxter and RAF duty bound Arthur Milne but Sir Matt Busby was available and he made all the difference as the HIBS halfback line was the key to victory

Rangers could not handle the green jerseys

In each half HIBS were denied stonewall penalties but it did not disturb their poise and they produced all the good football

With fourteen minutes to go and after good play by Busby Gordon Smith led the way through the Rangers defence and an astute cross to Bobby Combe saw him crash the ball with cool deliberation into the roof of the Rangers net despite close attention from two defenders

Rangers did not take their defeat well as it was the first time in this season they had been defeated at home and failed to score and it was no surprise to see several Hibernians limping off the field of play at the final whistle

A minutes silence was held before kick-off as both teams paid tribute to Hibernian youth player David Paul

Hibernian would win at home for the first time since September and would prove to be too strong for Kilmarnock

Craig Samson in the Kilmarnock goal was in outstanding form as he kept out attempts from Cummings Stevenson and Robertson but he could do little about Paul Hanlon’s header from Cairney’s corner kick

Hibs continued to press forward but despite Robertson hitting the crossbar found Samson to be in outstanding form. Kris Boyd tested Ben Williams in a rare Kilmarnock foray forward

The quality of HIBS’ play was excellent throughout and they sealed the deal when Paul Cairney swept a ball into the bottom corner with a left foot shot after Kilmarnock struggled to clear a cross into the box deep into the second half

Hibs took the lead when Leigh Griffiths latched onto a long Paul Hanlon ball to outstrip the Celtic defence and their keeper Fraser Forster to score from an incredibly tight angle. HIBS were then denied a stonewall penalty when Rogne blatantly handled an Eoin Doyle shot in the box

On seeing that this day also marks the passing of James Main.
I was thinking that many, possibly older football fans, would know the story of John Thomson, the Celtic goalkeeper accidently killed during an old Firm game.

James Main's story is not so well known.
I link the article below from The Scotsman marking the centenary of that tragic day and the loss of James.

Pretty sure that there is a memorial plaque in the Famous Five Stand

‘ Christmas Day Saturday 25 December 1909 was to be Jimmy Main’s last match for Hibernian Football Club in a league game against Partick Thistle at Firhill Glasgow

We are told snow had fallen in Glasgow earlier in the week and now there was a severe frost having a dreadful effect on the playing surface at Firhill

An unusual chain of circumstances occurred that fateful Christmas Day

It was the first time Hibernian had ever played at Partick Thistle’s new Firhill Stadium and on the train through to Glasgow Hibernian Captain Willie Duguid had complained of feeling unwell and Manager Dan McMichael drafted in one of his travelling reserves Johnny Lamb

The ground conditions were so bad at Firhill that Dan McMichael urged the Referee Mr Riddle to postpone the game

Mr Riddle was from Edinburgh and this was strange as in those days the Refs were always from neutral cities

He decided to let the game go ahead possibly influenced by the fact that half of the assembled 5000 crowd were Hibernian supporters who had travelled through from Edinburgh

With that decision the fate of Jimmy Main was sealed

In the warm up before kick off the HIBS team found out how dangerous conditions were underfoot when Vice Captain Sam Allan badly twisted his knee and had to be carried off

So Dan McMichael was now without two key defenders Duguid and Allan and he had to order the other travelling reserve Paddy Callaghan to get stripped

The match kicked off with only 10 HIBS players on the field of play

Dan made Jimmy Main Captain for the day the first time Jimmy ever had the honour

With players sliding everywhere near the end of the first half and crashing into each other Jimmy Main and Partick’s Frank Branscombe challenged for a loose ball Branscombe accidentally caught Main with a full on kick to the stomach and Jimmy was carried off the pitch in agony

Dan McMichael stayed in the Dressing Room with Jimmy Main the whole of the second half and made sure he was comfortable covering him in blankets as his 10 man HIBS team went down 1-3

Dan took his injured player back to his Mossend home where the local GP diagnosed bruising

Dan who was an expert Physio challenged this but to no avail Jimmy in fact had severe internal injuries and a ruptured bowel and by early Sunday morning his distress was acute

Dan called back the Doctor and demanded that Jimmy be immediately admitted to RIE where Jimmy was operated on

The Doctors gave Jimmy little hope and Dan sat with the family at Jimmy’s bedside for three days when late in the evening of Wednesday 29th December poor Jimmy died

The family were shattered as was everyone at Easter Road and the usually unemotional Dan McMichael who himself was the father of a large family broke down and sobbed ‘He was like a son to me’ It had been Dan who had for 5 years coached the raw youth into an international class footballer’

    Jimmy Main was only 23

There is always talk about naming stands. We already have The Famous Five.
Why not name the stand that is known as The West "The James Main Stand" shortened no doubt to The Main Stand. It was always our largest Grandstand.

I think it would be a great gesture to honour Jimmy Main and have a large portrait of him outside on the wall and above the entrance. It would forever remind us of a young life cut tragically short whilst wearing the green jersey.

When i was typing my first post regards James,i thought the same.
But then thought it might come across as a poor joke.

Of course the old wooden stand was known as The Main Stand or Centre Stand.

    Hi Mick

Yes hear what you say about coming across as a poor joke. That was certainly not my intention.
I thought it was a great way to honour someone but I also probably deep down think (and understand) that perhaps our younger support don't have the same drive to honour someone from a grainy black and white photo. We all support the Hibs in different ways !

ps I love a lot of your stories from the past

pps In the New Year I'm going to revisit the stories from the Holy Cross school book.

Pat Stanton and Jimmy O’Rourke were on the scoresheet but HIBS’ third goal was a thing of beauty

A pinpoint Alex Cropley pass sent Arthur Duncan scampering down the left touchline The Flyer fired over a waist high first time cross which was met by the horizontal figure of Alan Gordon. Gordon’s blonde head made perfect contact with the ball which flew past Bobby Clark in the Aberdeen goal

Alan Gordon later said that it was one of the best goals he ever scored The crowd certainly thought so as the team received a prolonged ovation as the players trotted back to the half way line

What a memory of Arthur Duncan in the Dryborough Cup Final.

He stops to catch his breath, shows the ball to the so called best right back in Britain, turns on the jets and then goes past him and smashes it into the Celtic net from a tight angle.

The camera then zooms into the Celtic end and the supposed best supporters in the world are leaving in their droves. Nice.

The greatest game in history and every hibby that was there will never forget it

It remains Hearts’ record home league defeat to this day only matched by Celtic in the Scottish Cup in 2013

It was the sort of performance every supporter dreams about

Every HIBS player was at the peak of their game

There was the dashing of the full backs John Brownlie and Erich Schaedler

There was the complete mastery of the midfield : the industry and drive of Pat Stanton the virtuosity of Alex Cropley and complementing them Alex Edwards whose special qualities reminded us how few players can really pass the ball well

On the left the speed of Arthur Duncan was devastating

In the middle the forceful Alan Gordon who won every ball in the air, challenged with determination and embarrassed those who had discarded him and Jimmy O’Rourke who like a hungry dog snapped for any crumbs

Not forgetting Scotland international goalkeeper Jim Herriot and Jim Black and John Blackley at the back who snuffed out and swept up everything Hearts had to offer in attack after an initial flurry when Hearts could easily have scored

On the day that the UK joined the EEC HIBS had to win by six clear goals to overtake Celtic at the top of the Scottish First Division

The green machine just kept going forwards sheer football delight

Was at all the new years day games mentioned from 1968 onwards. That is a tradition that needs to return. Nothing better than beating Hearts on New Years Day, then giving it to Jambo mates and relatives after the game. 50 years anniversary next new years day of the Tanking at Tiny.

    Loved them

I remember going through what seemed like years of 0-0 draws before going back to my Gran’s in Dalry for Steak Pie with my Hearts supporting Uncle sitting in the corner wearing his maroon lambs wool sweater

He was a tad quiet 49 years ago today

I remember we all sat around the black and white TV waiting on the highlights to come on at 7pm

A different world for sure, Hibs apart from a couple of daft results from 1965 onwards to around 1980 or so never got beat from the manky mob, thats entertainment.

I was at all those games from 1957 onwards. Turnbull scored in the first minute. 1956/57 was a peculiar season and we were drawn in a League Cup section with Hearts,Falkirk and Partick. First game was against Hearts at Tynecastle. Turnbull scored very early-first goal of the season in Scotland I think.Hearts scored the next six.(I was at that game too). We didn't win a game in the section and ended with one point from a game against either Partick or Falkirk. This was during an 8 or 9 season spell when we didn't get out of our LC section. Then Falkirk were back at Easter Road for the first league match and we beat them 6-1 with a Reilly hat trick.Think I've got that right-it was a long time ago.
