Did you not have your regulation builders helmet on in the club Colours ?

“Era Souvenir Helmets, Wrigleys Spearmint and Macaroon Bars!”

Nah, I presume fashions had moved on by the time I started going to games.

Incidentally, that was my first season attending games on my own, at the heady age of 13.

Jocky Scott was in temporary charge after Alex Miller had resigned

Rangers took the lead after 13 minutes with a howitzer of a free-kick that Jim Leighton didn’t even move for from Jorg Albertz

Second half HIBS came out the traps flying with Kevin Harper and Darren Jackson terrorising the Rangers defence going down the slope After 60 minutes Darren Jackson in full flow got pulled down just outside the box but landing well inside the box the Referee awarded a penalty 1-1 Oh Ah Jackson Ah! Three minutes later HIBS took the lead when Graeme Donald got on the end of a brilliant team passing move and found himself with a tap-in in front of goal past Andy Goram

Scenes in the closing stages when the Referee obviously trying to even things up awards Rangers a penalty and Brian Laudrup uncharacteristically steps up and misses The Referee orders a retake for encroachment and Jim Leighton pulls off a fantastic save

12/10/1985 Scottish League Premier Division Match Day 10

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Aberdeen

    Cowan 25

A Skol Cup Final dress rehearsal and a match played in brilliant sunshine in front of a deserted East as it was getting a new roof fitted.

Hibs were hoping to transfer their brilliant League Cup form to the League and they got off to the perfect start when Stevie Cowan scored against his old club heading in a Brazil free-kick off the underside of Jim Leighton’s crossbar.

Aberdeen were struggling to cope with the pace and power of Gordon Durie’s runs as he continually stretched their defence but slowly but surely Aberdeen were starting to gain the upper hand in the match

Late into the second half and running out of ideas, Alan Rough twice denying Billy Stark with brilliant saves, Alex Ferguson introduced BP Youth Cup winning youngsters Paul Wright and Steven Gray into the fray and it was the latter now sadly deceased who snatched the equaliser for the Dons latching onto a brilliant Neale Cooper through ball to score past Rough from the edge of the box with a low right footed drive

12/10/1965 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 1 Leg 2

    Valencia 2 v 0 Hibernian ( Agg 2-2 )

Hibs defending a 2-0 lead held out for 14 minutes when Waldo stepped up and curled a free-kick round the wall and into the net. HIBS defended heroically and Willie Wilson performed miracles in goal but there was little he could do in 74 minutes when Baxter gave away a penalty when he committed a foul in the box Sanchez-Lage stepping up to convert the award

HIBS lost the toss and would have to return to the Mestalla for the replay

12/10/1955 European Champions Cup Round 1 Leg 2

13/10/1990 Scottish League Premier Division Match Day 8

    Dundee United 1 v 0 Hibernian

In a statement of intent HIBS gave a debut to German Cup and Super Cup winner Murdo MacLeod recently signed from Borussia Dortmund

Cheered on by a large vociferous travelling support it looked as though HIBS were going to hang on for a valuable point against table topping Dundee United that was until the 89th minute when full back Willie Miller inexplicably diverted a long clearance from United keeper Alan Main over the head of Andy Goram and into the unguarded net

Alexander James Cropley makes his debut for Scotland at Hampden Park and lines up in the same team as Patrick Gordon Stanton

This match is interesting as it is the first game in which English born players were allowed to play for Scotland : Bob Wilson and Alex Cropley

Alex Cropley would break his ankle in his second and last game for Scotland versus Belgium at Pittodrie giving a debut to a young Kenny Dalglish

    13/10/1951 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Morton

Hibs were going neck and neck for the Championship with early leaders East Fife in this season and Morton were proving a tough nut to crack with their goalkeeper Jimmy Cowan repelling everything HIBS could throw at him

On 45 minutes Eddie Turnbull swung over a free-kick, Gordon Smith rose like a salmon to bullet home a header but the Referee insisted he had already blown for half-time as soon as Turnbull took the free-kick

Into the second half and eventually HIBS’ pressure paid off much to the relief of 30000 fans when Ormond’s glancing header went beyond Cowan’s outstretched hand and into the net via the post

HIBS would win the league in this season eventually beating Rangers by 4 points

    13/10/1917 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Queens Park

    Willie Miller 3
    Moir

Interesting fact 4 Willie Millers have played for Hibernian 1 x Goalkeeper 1 x Defender and 2 x Forwards

    13/10/1894 Scottish League Division Two

    Morton 1 V 7 Hibernian

After being denied entry into the First Division after winning the Second Division the year before due to the rules at that time HIBS meant business this season thrashing Greenock Morton away scoring 92 goals in their 18 League games and winning the league by 8 points ahead of second placed Motherwell

Hibs would play Morton at the Holy Ground again in the League a week later and would win 6-3

    ...

That was when the leagues were first introduced and the winners of the Second Division had to also win a vote by the top league clubs to get promoted.

Incidentally, Hearts voted in favour of Hibs being promoted but Celtc voted against.

Celtc had been on a long campaign to eradicate all other clubs with Irish origins so that they would have a monopoly on supporters of Irish descent. They apparently even subsidised supporters buses at one point to encourage fans in other areas to watch them instead of supporting their local team.

    Charitable origins? My Ar5e!

Into the second half and Pierre Van Hooijdonk gave a dominant Celtic side the lead with a well placed shot from just inside the box.

What a player Peter was. I am sure that Bill Shankley was after Peter when he was at Hibs. Jock Stein picked Peter as a 17 year old to play against Brazil. I have never seen anyone since who runs like Peter did. Sure he was man of the match against Brazil.

Really great player and he was picked to play at Hampden against Pele and Brazil. Shankley took him to Liverpool from Forest, where he made the new position of holding mid with number 5 on his back the position that became synonymous with Liverpools (Ray Kennedy etc, etc) success over many years.
Wonderful player who was also great in the air.

Every school boy in Edinburgh used to imitate his running style running on their toes prepared to launch themselves at a seconds notice to bullet a header into the postage stamp

A brave intelligent player with the heart of a lion well able to pick out a pass and chip in with his fair share of goals

I remember one Derby he took over in goals and against St Mirren when Willie Wilson reappeared on the wing looking like Kochise

He wasn't universally popular in his pomp either, although players like Colin Grant & Merv Jones had become the No1 target for the cretins. I never could understand it, he was a terrific player, I remember his last game before heading south, April 1970, he scored a brace as Willie Mac's Hibs beat a really good St Johnstone side 4-1. Tuesday after school the Evening News brought the dreaded news that Matt Gillies had taken him to Forest for 80k, gutted, and so soon after his great pal, Peter Marinello had departed.

I remember the yellow goalie jersey being about ten sizes too big for him and after that save pulling off lumps of mud pretending to throw it at passing Hearts players

Yeah, the sending off was the 1970 new year derby where he retaliated to Peter Oliver's foul on him. He wasn't in the best of moods anyway as he had been hankering for a move south for ages and his mate Marinello had just beat him to it.

Yeah, the sending off was the 1970 new year derby where he retaliated to Peter Oliver's foul on him. He wasn't in the best of moods anyway as he had been hankering for a move south for ages and his mate Marinello had just beat him to it.
He had been promised a move but had to watch Martin, Scott and Stein go and then Marinello before him so agree he was ragin

Bob Shankly resigned because we were a selling club

If only Jock Stein had stayed

Wasn’t Gerry McNee supposed to be a Celtic fan? He wrote a number of books about Celtic before he had a tie with Billy McNeill.
You wouldn't know that from the commentary.

15/10/2006 Scottish League SPL Match Day 10

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Hearts

    Zemmama
    Killen

Tony Mowbray had left the building and HIBS started off life without him by throwing away a two goal lead.

Merouane Zemmama shot HIBS into an early lead after some delightful footwork and Chris Killen added a second on 16 minutes from a corner

Hearts hit back with an Andrius Velicka header but lost Saulius Mikoliunas to a second bookable offence early in the second half. Velicka caught the HIBS defence and Zibi Malkowski cold with a near post strike to give 10 man Hearts some hope

Craig Gordon pulled off a cracking save from a Rob Jones header at the death

Two points dropped and Zibi back on the naughty step

15/10/2005 Scottish League SPL Match Day 10

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Kilmarnock

    Beuzelin 2
    O’Connor
    Riordan

0-2 down at half-time thanks to a Simon Ford header and a James Fowler strike HIBS came out of the traps flying in the second half to complete an amazing fight back

Garry O’Connor accepted a pass from Derek Riordan on 53 minutes and bulleted a long low drive into the back of the net Riordan was the provider again and this time it was Guillaume Beuzelin who left the net bulging with a superb diving header

By now HIBS were well on top and it was no surprise when they took the lead Ivan Sproule won a free kick on the edge of the area and Kevin Thomson curled a superb free kick onto the head of Beuzelin for the third

HIBS were on a roll and they added to their tally when Beuzelin found the head of Steven Fletcher with a cross who nodded the ball into the path of Derek Riordan to complete the scoring

Finished third, only one point behind Motherwell and took Celtc to a replay in the SC Semi Final (at Ibrox), so were also very close to putting them out the Cup.

That was one of those 'so near, and yet so flipping far' seasons.

It was particularly annoying as Hibs lost at home to bother Falkirk and Partick Thistle late in the season. Losing the SF was a bad blow.

The team started to decline the following season.

Gerry McNee bears the honour of being the only journalist known to have been decked by both Jock Stein and Jock Wallace(at different times!).

Top of the League HIBS drop a point to lowly managerless Celtic who had sacked Manager Liam Brady

Tony Mowbray John Collins and Pat McGinlay lined up for Celtic

Gareth Evans gave HIBS the lead but Gerry Creaney bagged a brilliant but undeserved equaliser with five minutes to go

This match was a warm up for the 1993 League Cup Final against Rangers at Parkhead
