I'm going to a show at the Corn Exchange on Thursday and have been told I won't be allowed entry without proof of a negative test within 24 hour sof attendance. Is that part of the guidelines or is that a policy the venue have decided on?
It's not that big a deal really but I just wasn't expecting it.

    Sounds like it's them, I don't think it's a government requirement

I received a test today from what appears to be a mobile number. Saying I have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive and to book an at home test. I think the text looks fishy as surely would come from test and protect. Anybody any advice. Thanks
They changed a while back to sending texts when they are busy. If in doubt there is phone number in this link to call to check if the text is legit.

There's nothing in the regulations about having to provide a negative test to attend such an event.

Doubt there will be many Brits on holiday in Florida as you cannot enter the USA if you have been in the UK within the last 14 days. Haven't been able to since March 2020.

Unless you have a green card or a duel citizen.
Certain UK citizens are allowed in. I'm recently arrived as I'm granted an exception as a family member of a US citizen. I'm not on holiday. Others had work/study visas also granted entry.

Red list is more about variants, the US is pretty much all delta, hence India coming of red as its all delta. US has good genomic sequencing where as Mexico has none.
I think we all saw when the doors were kept open, against all advice, for India it wasn't about any type of virus variant that was the important factor. Its about showing the UK is open for business and doing trade deals in the wake of Brexit. Remember the Boris speech at the start of the pandemic when the UK was going to stay open?

If tortilla wraps and fajita mix were offered in a trade deal Mexico would be open! Or perhaps an influential party donor with a holiday home there.

There are some exceptions, a friend had to go home to Dublin and had to visit the embassy to be allowed back (claiming his work of important nature/family etc) however my work visa will not allow me to leave and come back. I've checked many times with many government agencies, it is very frustrating to say the least.

US embassies in certain countries are only issuing certain types of Visa which unfortunately do not cover my friend so he is stuck in England.

Friends of mine who emigrated about 15 years ago arrive from Chicago on Thursday and they're here for a week. They'll get back in to the US no problem as they're also US citizens now.

I'm actually getting quite scared by where this world will be in a few years. The sheer number of people that believe truly stupid things is frightening.

It's just not that they believe (plenty of folk will have supported other conspiracy theories in the past around things like the JFK assassination), it's they seem to increasingly take major life decisions based on mad things they've seen online.

I mind watching a film called idiocracy and thinking it was a very poor comedy, looking back I now think I was wrong and it was actually a documentary

Or is it just the face mask law they don’t like?

A Covid sceptic who has been hospitalised with the virus said he would urge people to have the vaccine.

"If you haven't been ill, you don't think you're going to get ill, so you listen to the [anti-vaccine] stuff," Marcus Birks said.

He has been in the intensive care unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital for the past week.

Been a few of them recently and unfortunately the three I read about they died.

Speaking from experience breathing issues are unbelievably awful and something I hope to never go through again. Covid is a shocker.

I still think back to the hospital from time to time and can't believe it actually happened.

Interesting discussion on mask wearing the pub this afternoon.
The windows are all open as usual and while it's definitely NOT cold there's a wee breeze, and in comparison to recent temperatures, it feels much colder, so much so that a number of the regulars are wanting them shut.
The manager's on the bar and asked an interesting question... shut the windows and you all go back to wearing masks unless your drinking. Or leave them as they are and only fire them on to come in or go to bog?

As an aside he only allows 'vertical drinking' at the far end of the bar away from where the bar staff are generally working.

    Made me think!

Does that mean if the windows were shut the suggestion was that you would need to wear a mask sitting down whilst chatting?

If so I've never come across that one before!

They want people to wear them and will make announcements to that end also, but I think it's fair for them to say that it's not the conductors job to enforce it... They've also made it clear how to report it if you're worried.

It sounds like they're doing as much as any other business does.

I'm not sure what he means by go back to wearing them when you are not drinking. It's never been a requirement to wear a mask if you are seated in a pub in Scotland and I've never seen anyone wear one whilst seated at all in the last year.

I think he's just being overzealous at the moment! (I hope so anyways)

I do agree with the bit about allowing folks at the bar but only if they stay at the end away from the bar staff as the staff don't really have much choice.

I am trying to think what it'll be like in mid winter though :-/ brrr ...

29,612 cases and 104 deaths registered in the UK today.

** Because of a technical issue, Public Health Wales have been unable to update their dashboard. Therefore cases and deaths within 28 days of a positive test from Wales have not been updated. Vaccinations have been updated. **

I listen to radio Scotland of a morning on my way. Back from work. The covid situation has dropped from headlines every day for a year and a half to almost a footnote. I think they think it’s over. Headline segment this morning was Governor Cuomo resigning with interviews with random American/New York journalist. I know it’s current affairs in the morning but it really is still current and more relevant to Scots than What an American politician has or hasn’t been up to.
