Yep, think this is perfectly possible now, especially with Ron Gordon in charge. He's already shown a willingness to hold out on our assets and Doig has a long term deal. £5m is chump change to EPL clubs.

Although in saying that, a lot of the places talking about arsenals interest in him seem to write as if he’ll be a backup first team left back which is utterly mental so maybe £5m isn’t out the question.

Because non OF Scottish teams next to never get £5m for anyone, never mind someone who hasn’t played that many first team games.

It’s unlikely but I hope we stick to our guns if we want £5m. I’ve said for a while now that we need to start overvaluing our players especially if teams down south are sniffing about.

Doig’s also on a long term contract so if a team like arsenal were looking at him, a figure as high as £5m might not be out of the question

Murty was speaking about this recently. Clubs are telling him they want to buy a player and their plans are X.Y or Z. That’s fine, but players doing that role in that particular league cost a certain amount of money. They don’t cost that amount of money divided by 10 because they’re coming from Scotland. Or at least there’s no reason why that should be the case.

If Arsenal think he’s good enough to get game time next season in the premier league, even if it’s off the bench, then he’s a £5m player.

We got £3m up front & more than £4m in total from Burnley for Fletch 12 years ago. To put it in perspective, that was Burnley's record pay out at the time, now it's over 5 times that amount. The longer Scottish clubs (& their supporters) continue to accept paltry fees for quality players then the longer English clubs will attempt to take advantage of our situation. £5m is loose change for EPL teams, we should be looking for at least that.

Agree with what you say about the fees.
Losing McGinn for what we did was criminal.
The name of the game is long contracts to give the club a bit of control over the situation.
Both Nisbet and Doig are under such contracts so the ball is in our court.

The coaching staff obviously have a far better idea of the playing level and value of our players than we do.
I still think Porteous has great ability and will be worth big bucks if we can knock the final corners off him. 2 years left on his contract so we are running out of time on the contract front. I reckon we sell in the winter window when clubs are desparate and no team wants to sell their better players.
Nisbet is a one touch finisher and every team wants one of them. Doesn't have the feet of Fletcher but not many have. Needs a 2nd season at Hibs but the Scotland appearances may make him difficult to hang onto.
Doig is the one I'm struggling to benchmark Only had one professional season in which he did remarkably well. Like Tierney he will be a much better player when he fills out. Hopefully he ignores the over the top hype and keeps working on his game and keeps improving. He hasn't come close to outgrowing Hibs yet.

Agree with this. Hearts got around 11 million for Craig Gordon. Not expecting that just now for Doig, but another season might push his value up. I has a look on the Arsenal forum and they think 5m is loose change 😅

I don’t disagree with you to be fair. I’d just be surprised if the player we start doing it is an 18 year old with 30 first team appearances.

Aberdeen tried it with McKenna by asking for £8m and ended up taking £3m because nobody would pay it though so I’m not sure it’s as simple as just holding out for the huge fees and refusing to sell. We need to sell players as part of our business model and it would take serious balls from the club to refuse to sell at the usual kind of money and ask for double or nothing.

That's why the idea of clubs working together to drive up prices won't necessarily work. £1m for a Livingston player is a good deal for them. Fantastic deal in relation to the prices they pay for the player and the wages they pay them. It would be a terrible deal for us with a higher outlay.

Also, we have no interest in driving up the prices of Scottish talent outside of our own because we're likely to want to buy it.

We have definitely turned down a £4m bid for him as there were no extras in the deal so someone is willing to pay up front.

Whilst agreeing with the sentiment, clubs are never going to unite around incoming transfer fees. There's very different and competing agendas at play across the quite varied circumstances of our top flight clubs.

Football has changed, forever. The issue is much greater than transfer fees, we have to look at sponsorship and income from TV rights and accept that our game operates on the periphery of what has become top class football in Europe. I can't really see anything that can realistically be done that will change that tbh. It's nothing to do with mentality and everything to do with money.

I don't think Dykes was a Scotland International when Livi sold him.
