Are you sure one of the protagonists here wasn't the controversial figure, Murray Ross?

Potential cuts to the foreign aid budget could be reversed. I was cheered up at first until I realised how sad it was that this was ever proposed in the first place.

It's OK though because the army has spent £3.5b on tanks that can't go faster than 20mph.

She is why they are winning elections. Tories know that as long as they keep being tough on foreigners, they can keep filling their own pockets and inflict austerity wherever they like. This is a winning formula in England and it doesn’t matter what we vote in Scotland.

The problem with that kind of strategy is that when you start it, you can't stop and it's a downward spiral into the abyss of xenophobic nationalism. When they can't blame the EU and EU citizens for all our woes, then who is next? The Scots, the Irish again or even just Muslims, Jews and Catholics?

Talking of lining pockets. A week after being given a peerage which was initially turned down only to be overturned by BJ, Peter Cruddas donates £0.5m to the Conservative Party. Them peerages have went up in price innit.

The Scots are already seen as money grabbing subsidy junkies who live lavish lives off the english pound. We will be next. Get us tae ****.

Intrigued by Dowden and Johnson wading into the Ollie Robinson story. Can't be anything except pandering to base.

Nothing very much to be intrigued by. Johnson wants it to be normal never to have old racism brought up, in case anyone brings his old racism up, and Dowden wants anything that Johnson wants. And pandering too, of course.

Can't beat a good bit of old fashioned deflection from everything else they've been up to that appeals as you say.

Or is there even more sleaze or bad news round the corner?

A lot of “keep politics out of sport” folk celebrating this latest intervention from Dowden and Johnson. It’s almost as if they don’t care about politics in sport as long as it’s their own politics.

I'm assuming the tweets made by the player in question were pretty horrendous? I hadn't read the story until this afternoon and my initial reaction was to wonder about the cynicism of whoever made them public waiting until he'd stepped on to the field for his England debut before doing so. If somebody wants to call out racism/sexism why not do so right away? The impression this gives is that somebody has been sitting on them for years with a view to exploiting them (or perhaps cashing in?) to the max.

Having not seen the tweets, I'm not going to defend the player but I think it's reasonable to question the motivation behind this.

See where you're coming from but I don't really care how or when they're outed, just glad they are.

The cynic in me wonders if there'd ever have been an expression of regret for past racist and sexist remarks if they hadn't been exposed.

The player himself now acknowledges the nature of the remarks which taken at face value is enough to define them I feel.

Yes, I'm not doubting the offensive nature of the remarks.

However, I'm also a bit cynical about the ECB here. Like so many organisations of late there's a sense that they're more concerned with their own image than actually getting to the heart of the matter. This player was under their jurisdiction at the time. Why was something like this allowed to pass unremarked if they see fit to throw him in front of the disciplinary panel now?

I know nothing of Robinson apart from what I've read today but I hope he's a more mature, rational 27-year-old than he was as a teenager. Most of us are, by and large. The comments in his defence from his former room-mate Moeen Ashraf indicate as much.
