HIBS’ first major trophy since 1991
Hibs ‘ goals came from Rob Jones, Abdessalam Benjelloun 2 and Steven Fletcher 2

A moving spectacle after the match saw 30000 jubilant Hibees singing ‘Sunshine on Leith’ under the grey South Glasgow skies
After the match John Collins and Steven Fletcher dedicated the victory to their recently deceased fathers and Scott Brown declared that he was glad he had stayed at Easter Road

5-1, what a day. I arrived from Spain with a heid that was shaved to the wid. Freezing, but bought my lucky hibs benny hat. Went to the match with my sister, eldest laddie and a good number of my closest pals. Tremendous day. The players did us proud, the fans turned out in huge numbers and we had a ball.

Barry Nicholson gave Dunfermline the lead just before half-time with a shot from the edge of the box
Derek Riordan almost equalised just after half-time but Andy Tod cleared his effort off the line after it beat goalkeeper Derek Stillie
Dunfermline almost increased their lead but Nicholson’s effort bounced back from Simon Brown’s crossbar
Derek Riordan would not be denied however and he equalised with a simple header from a superb Steven Whittaker cross
Substitute Steven Fletcher gave HIBS the lead three minutes later when Stillie appeared to drop the ball at his feet and stood waiting for a whistle from the Official that did not come
Fletcher scored his second when he converted a David Murphy pass from six yards out
Fletcher then set up Riordan for the fourth to end Hibs’ run of three defeats and give them their first win at East End Park in 14 years

The seated enclosure behind the goal was never a first choice for me. The slope gave an artificial feel to the perspective.
Only once was it a sell out if I remember correctly, against Leeds Utd.
Recollections may vary.

Bertie Auld commented at half-time that he would still be playing if he had the time and space afforded to Fraser
Into the second half and in 55 minutes Arthur Duncan won a loose ball in midfield and released a cross field pass to the onrushing Ralph Callachan who galloped through and drew Bobby Geddes before shooting home
Fraser rattled the HIBS post with another one of his specials before HIBS went 2-1 up in 71 minutes
Bobby Flavell crossed and Ralph Callachan headed in bravely so bravely that he was stretchered off with a suspected broken jaw

I was at that game at Dens Park.
Ally Macleod got hooked, and gave Auld the 1000 yard stare. He.then took an age to get off, not to the bench, but walking very slowly to the dressing rooms in the corner 😁All the time, half our support are giving him an ovation, the other half telling him to hurry up and get the **** off 😂

Lavety 34
Alex McLeish records his first victory as HIBS Manager against his old club despite having David Elliot sent off after 20 minutes in this six pointer
Ironically it was a 6-2 defeat against McLeish’s Motherwell that was the final nail in Jim Duffy’s coffin
The loan moves for Grant Brebner and Bryan Gunn and approaches to Wolves for striker Mixu Paatelainen gave the fans hope for the future
The only goal of the game arrived when Willie Miller swung a cross into the far post Kevin Christie rose to head clear but under pressure from Tony Rougier only succeeded in directing the ball to Barry Lavety lurking at the edge of the box and he beat Steve Woods low at his right hand post

On the pitch with Rangers almost guaranteed the Premiership title HIBS moved to within two points of second placed Motherwell in the race for a UEFA Cup place thanks to two strikes from Keith Wright
Hibs took the lead in the 12th minute in front of the West and East Stands as the North and South were under reconstruction when Darren Jackson released Kevin Harper down the left wing his driven cross was flicked beyond Stephen Woods by Wright to open the scoring

McCartney
30000 packed ‘neutral’ Ibrox for this Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers
Hibs took a big support with 1500 leaving Waverley Station to be joined by many more Irishmen through in the West
Things looked ominous for HIBS as they were without injured defenders Barney Breslin, Jimmy Hogg and Hamilton Handling
Hibs started off on the offensive and took the game to Rangers
We are told that Rangers could not handle the pace and trickery of Billy McCartney so kicked and hacked him to the ground
Similarly the same could be said about Andy McGeachan but the Rangers defence could not catch him as he wove his way past the blue jerseys with great speed
Hibs scored but the goal was disallowed for offside
Hibs’ pressure paid off when Johnny Divers scored The Rangers defence again protested for offside but this time the Referee would hear none of it and awarded the goal Indeed the Ref was getting braver as he awarded HIBS a penalty that Divers scooped over the crossbar
In the second half the HIBS support started to find their voice as they could sense a great victory spurring on the green jerseys at every opportunity singing and waving their green flags
HIBS had another goal disallowed before McCartney once again took the ball on a mazy run beating man after man and slotting home a perfectly legitimate second
This insolence made McCartney a marked man and minutes later he was carried from the field of play on a stretcher his leg broken in two above the ankle
Billy McCartney had been earmarked to play for Scotland in the forthcoming international versus England
Andy McGeachan was fortunate to leave the field of play without serious injury
‘Hibernian were the far better team both in combined play and individual skills Hibernian humiliated Rangers but even worse the Scottish Champions humiliated themselves with their rough unsportsmanlike play’
Having defeated Rangers in the semifinals at Ibrox Hibernian would win the Scottish Cup in this season defeating Celtic at Parkhead

Incidentally I often think that the Stein/Shankly team of the mid 60s doesn’t get the recognition it deserves for the great football it often played.
